Zippy: The Movie is a 2027 American animated adventure comedy film based on the Disney Channel animated television series Zippy and produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was co-written and directed by series creators Brandon and Kyla Greene, it features the series' regular voice cast consisting of Michaela Dietz, Greg Cipes, Mae Whitman, Amanda Leighton, Drake Bell, Josh Peck, Kari Wahlgren, and Mark Hamill with guest voices of Will Ferrell, Alec Baldwin, Demi Lovato, Kristen Bell, Ed Sheeran, and Jane Lynch as new characters. It is the first film in the Zippy film series. In this film, Zippy finds one of the five Star Crystals that fell from the sky. When all five are gathered together can grant one wish. But then Zurgo gets it and uses its power to rule Ziptown and enslave everyone in it. With the help from two teenage girls named Vanessa Duncan (Lovato) and her friend Gabi Buyer (Bell), Zippy and his friends must find the other four Star Crystals and save the world from Zurgo's rule.

During the height of Zippmania, Disney Animation accepted an offer for a film adaptation of Zippy from Brandon Greene in 2024. Brandon and Kyla assembled a team from the show's writing staff, including Cameron Perez, Julia Vickerman, Jake Zubrod, and Daniel Wresch. The film was originally intended to serve as the series finale, but Disney ordered more episodes of the series as it had become increasingly profitable, so both siblings resigned as showrunners.

Zippy: The Movie was released theatrically in the United States on June 18, 2027 and received generally positive reviews from critics. It was also a box office success, earning over $129.4 million worldwide against its $10 million budget. At the 95th Academy Awards, the film received two nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Great Day". Two sequels have since been released on Disney+: Zippy: The Vacation Movie (2038) and Zippy: The Wi-Fi Movie (2044), with a fourth film, Zippy: The Space Movie, set to be released in theaters on August 14, 2048.

Plot[]

One night, five shining objects in the sky fall all across the world. One falls near a cave in Ziptown. The next day after school, Zippy and Wet Willy try to blow the biggest bubble that could last. Zippy blows a bubble so big that it engulfs them both and carries them into the cave nearby. The bubble suddenly pops as it makes an impact with the shining object that fell from the sky last night.

Eager to discover what exactly it is, they decide to take it to the Burger Shack at the Zip Central Mall, where they explain to their friends about what they found. At first, Zack thinks that Zippy and Willy were planning to steal the Star Crystal, which is housed in the Shack, but upon attempting to return it to its spot, he realizes that what they had was, in fact, another Star Crystal which all five crystals put together can grant one wish. Suddenly, Hilda and Herb Von Papperoth, Dr. Cappuchin, and Freddy Bear in a ice cream truck drove by, sending out invitations to a feast at Zurgo's Funhouse to apologize for his wicked behavior. Meanwhile, the twins Jack and Janet get invitations as well and they decide to head to Zurgo's Dinner Party. Meanwhile, as Flambo walks Ember on her stroller, they meet a Chihuahua named Pepe. They discover that Dr. Whiskers is creating an army of giant robotic mecha cats to smash through the city and set out to stop him.

Curious and skeptical, the crew sets off for the funhouse, but upon their arrival, they find it was a trick as Zurgo and his henchmen trap Zippy and his friends when they enter. With the group trapped, Zurgo attempts to take the crystal, but realizes that they don't have it. Zurgo finds out that the Star Crystal is with the other one at the Burger Shack and he and the others head off to steal them both. Displeased by the outcome, the gang free themselves and head off to the mall. Open their arrival, Zurgo and his goons attack the Burger Shack in an attempt to steal the two Star Crystals. After a battle involving giant foods and condiments, Zurgo attempts to steal the two Star Crystals, but Zippy tries to stop him.

While Zippy and Zurgo fight over the Star Crystal, Cody, roller skating out of control, accidentally swipes the Star Crystals leading to a chase around Ziptown. The crystals break into two again and one falls into the sewer. Zurgo, realizing that the Star Crystal could grant a wish once put together decides to find them, but is arrested alongside Hilda and Herb, and taken to the Ziptown Prison Asylum. Zippy and Wet Willy propose finding the the Star Crystal before Zurgo does. Flambo, Ember and Pepe crash into Dr. Whiskers' lab and despite beating his Mecha Cats (which ended up as failures anyway), they are trapped. While Floppy and Baby Butch leave the lair, they assist Whiskers in repairing his new invention the Power-Consuming Scepter. Buddy and Beatrice free them and Flambo, Ember, and Pepe head to Manhattan.

Later, Zippy goes to Ceela's house and she shows him a super plane that she made to fly him around the world to find the Star Crystals, with a Wet Willy joining. Zurgo finds out about this and sends Cappuchin and Freddy after the duo. They hijack the plane and kick both Zippy and Willy off, leaving them stranded in the middle of the forest. Zippy and Willy try to find the stolen plane, but create a small boat and they ride it to Manhattan, New York City. Upon their arrival in Manhattan, they decide to head around the town to find the other Star Crystals and settle the score with Zurgo. Meanwhile, Hilda and Herb break Zurgo and themselves out of prison, and steal back Baxworth's Star Crystal the police took from him. They later meet Dr. Whiskers, and Zurgo helps Whiskers improve on his mecha cats, making them more powerful and is given the scepter to use the Star Crystals' power. They invite many of Zippy's foes and they join Zurgo and his goons to get the other Star Crystals, destroy Zippy, and conquer Ziptown.

While exploring around the city, they stop at a high school called "Reitherman High School" where they run into high school teacher Mrs. Lola Serrano and introduces them to the CEO of the Sugar Rush Candy Company, Robert Wiggles and he and his loyal butler Edmonton take them a tour around the school, while also revealing that he was once friends with Mr. Baxworth and Zurgo and they all went to the same high school together. Later, Zippy and Wet Willy meet Mrs. Serrano's two students named Vanessa Duncan and her best friend, Gabi Buyer and they followed them after class. Zippy tells them that they came to Manhattan to find the Star Crystals before Zurgo gets it and they need their help. But Vanessa's parents left for a convention in San Francisco and they're trusting her at home by herself, so she doesn't want any strangers in her house causing damage. Gabi convinces Vanessa to let Zippy and Willy stay since she has a Star Crystal as a necklace. Vanessa agrees to this and let's Zippy stay at her house where they see Flambo and Ember with Pepe (who is Vanessa's pet), while Wet Willy stays at Gabi's house. Gabi reveals to Willy that she is a huge Zippers fan.

The next morning, Ceela and Jenny are trying to find out where the two star crystals are. Jenny notices that there's a third one in Manhattan. As they decide to go to find Zippy and help him find it, Zurgo and other villains show up and attack Ziptown and take over Zippy's treehouse. They storm the mall and Burger Shack and trap Mr. Baxworth and Zack in a toilet, but Zalow, Zane, Slugger stall them long enough for Ceela, Jenny, Zoomie, Jolly, Pinky, Billy, and Cleo to escape. Slugger accidentally reveals that Zippy and Wet Willy have gone to retrieve the Star Crystals. Zurgo sends Hilda, Herb, Freddy, Baby Butch, Floppy, Pastrilum, and Vandit after them to find the crystals first before they can, with Dr. Whiskers releasing his new and improved mecha cats, with a little help from Dr. Cappuchin. Billy, Cleo, their friends, and the Burger Shack employees are thrown out of the mall along with Ceela, Jenny, Zoomie, Jolly, and Pinky. As the Burger Shack employees lost their jobs, the five friends witness their beloved city becoming worst and Zurgo declares himself Emperor of Ziptown. Ceela and Jenny along with Zoomie, Jolly and Pinky ride on Jenny's pink convertible.

Back in Manhattan, Pepe informs that someone is on the verge of searching for all the five Star Crystals and might use them for something terrible. Ember gets the idea to team up with Zippy and his friends to stop this. Before leaving, Wet Willy defends a student named Damian from bullies and Zippy helps Vanessa with her relationship with her boyfriend, Brian Paul, an exchange student who moved from London two years ago. Brian tells Vanessa that he's hosting a party at his cousin's house in San Francisco and asks her if she would like to go and thanks to Zippy and Gabi's encouragement, she accepts. After escaping some savage stray dogs with the Star Crystal that fell in the sewer, Flambo, Ember and Pepe meet an eccentric scientist named Dr. Suzanne Summers. She tells them a story about the star crystals and that they have been falling down on Earth once every 20 years. If it gets in the wrong hands it could create chaos. Soon, Baby Butch and Floppy find them and try to capture them. Despite the mecha cats being hard to beat than before, Flambo, Ember and Pepe defeated them, not before revealing that Dr. Whiskers has joined Zurgo and the rest of the villains. Flambo heads to Zippy and gives him the missing Star Crystal. Zippy and Wet Willy return the Sugar Rush Candy Company and realizing that they have the Star Crystal, Wiggles attempts to trap the two in a toy box and steal the crystal, but they escape with the help of Flambo and Pepe. Vanessa and Gabi arrive just in time to rescue Zippy and Willy from Wiggle's executives, and the four travel to San Francisco with Wiggles, Edmonton, and his executives in pursuit, while Flambo, Ember and Pepe leave in pursuit of a biker whom they realize has a star crystal as a necklace.

The gang arrive at Manhattan and they split up to find Zippy and Wet Willy. Zoomie, Jolly, and Pinky meet Brian and helps them go find them. Brian tells them that he has seen Zippy and Willy with Vanessa and Gabi, on their way to San Francisco. But a series of mishaps have Zoomie and Jolly labelled quarter thieves/statue smashers and Brian drives them and Pinky on their way to San Francisco, while also avoid the cops. While driving through a rural area in Kansas, Brian was forced to pull over by the local sheriff, and Zoomie and Jolly are arrested, landing them in jail where they got along with the prisoners. During all this, Ceela and Jenny meet Damian and he said that Zippy and Wet Willy are heading to San Francisco and they decide to go there. Meanwhile, Zippy, Wet Willy, Vanessa and Gabi make a stop at a comic store in eastern Colorado to buy Ratman comics, only to hear about Whiskers' mecha cats rampaging over the Marvel Plaza on the news, and they head over to confront them. At first, Wet Willy tries to use gasoline to blow them up, only to make them even more stronger, but they did manage to use water to blast them causing the mecha cats to explode. Back in Ziptown, Billy and Cleo sneak into the kitchen at the Burger Shack and go to confront Zurgo. Before Billy can leave and alert Zippy, they are caught by Zurgo and he unleashes the Star Crystal's power on a mind-control device that Dr. Whiskers and Cappuchin built to mind control all the citizens of Ziptown and sends them after Billy and Cleo but are saved by Zalow and Zane who also survived being mine controlled. While trying to catch up with Zippy and Wet Willy, Ceela and Jenny were being chased and hunted down by not only their enemies, but also Wiggles, Edmonton and his executives. Ceela goes on her laptop and finds out that there is another Star Crystal, which is at an Amusement Park called "Fun City", and Jenny drive her and Ceela there, where they could meet Zippy and Willy.

During Zoomie and Jolly's stay in jail as it supposedly comes to an end, the warden then approaches them and tells them that their stay has been extended an additional thirty days. Learning from another prisoner that they might be locked up forever, the two brothers decide to break out of jail when the prison guard's eyes are diverted. With the help of Pinky and Brian, as well as some of the other prisoners Zoomie and Jolly were hanging with, they were successful in their attempt. Arriving in San Francisco, the four stay at Vanessa's Uncle Tony's house. Vanessa and Gabi dress up and go to Brian's party as Zippy and Wet Willy search for a Star Crystal when Tony tells them that it landed at Fun City. At the same time, Hilda, Herb, Freddy, Wiggles, his executives, and the other villains pursuit them. Meanwhile, Flambo, Ember and Pepe catch up to and befriend the biker at Death Valley, who gives them the star crystal and takes the trio to Fun City. As night falls, they stop at a local diner called the Milkshake Manor. They meet a Native American zip person named Jim and he warns the two to keep their eyes peeled for anything that might deceive them at Fun City, as its proprietor, Mr. Jeffrey shouldn't be trusted and has dark intentions. Arriving at Fun City, they are reunited with Ceela and Jenny who tells them that Zurgo and their enemies have taken over Ziptown and that they're trying to hunt them down. The gang later then approach Jack and Janet, who both gotten lost on the way to Zurgo's funhouse and they tell them that they should try the city's attractions and Jenny's favorite pop singer, Aurora Breeze is here for a live perofrmance. While on the attractions, Edmonton, Wiggles' executives and the villains try to dispose of the pair, but all failed.

After a fun-filled night, the gang discover a Star Crystal that Mr. Jeffrey has. Willy decides to "take him out", but Zippy gets another idea to sneak in and take the crystal. Meanwhile, Flambo and Ember discover that Mr. Jeffrey turns the kids into pigs for their misdeeds and sells them to slave labor in circuses or be killed for food in slaughterhouses. Zippy, Wet Willy, Ceela, Jenny, Flambo, and Ember witness a boy transforming into a pig, and with Pepe's help, the team along with Jack, Janet, and Breeze escape with the Star Crystal, though they have to abandon the kids in the clutches of Mr. Jeffrey (even if Zippy tries to call the police about the incident). As they escaped from Fun City, Zippy asks Jack and Janet if they'd like to join them, but they decline saying that they recall the free food promised at Zurgo's Funhouse, and eagerly head off. Soon the team are reunited with Zoomie, Jolly and Pinky, but are met by the sheriff and his deputies and try to recapture the two brothers. However, Dr. Summers shows up and breaks a part of the sheriff's car causing him and the police to flee. As the Kansas police force drive away, Dr. Summers remarks he is grateful to be in the north, "where people are civilized", before she leaves for London. Later, at Brian's party, Breeze and the Zippers perform as Gabi and the other screaming fans cheer on. Vanessa discovers that Brian habitually broke up with her rival and bully Elizabeth a year ago due to his love for Vanessa and how she loves Pepe. Vanessa leaves the party and Gabi follows just as Zippy and friends show up. Ceela tells her and Gabi that Zurgo has the last Star Crystal and must find a way to get it back.

The next morning, Vanessa and Gabi go to the library to research the Star Crystals. There they learn that when Robert was a 8-year-old boy, he was living with his father, Sir Vernon Wiggles, who is the original founder of Sugar Rush Candy Company. His father was always distrustful of zip people due to their chaotic nature. When Robert turned 16, he was sent to Reitherman High School where he met a young Baxworth and Zurgo and became the perfect team. Robert's father says not to trust them saying they can ruin him, which did happen when Zurgo and Baxworth nearly destroyed the Sugar Rush Candy Company and his father scolds him for it. 12 years later, his father was killed in an accident and Robert became bitter and paranoid, vowing to never trust any zip people, and eventually becomes the 15th richest man in Manhattan. Zurgo arrives in San Francisco on an airship and in the dungeon under it, Mr. Baxworth's wallet begins going crazy over all of the loose change he isn't earning, so Mr. Baxworth lets the wallet go so it can get to the money, only to be picked up by Damian. As Zippy and his friends prepare to head back home to save Ziptown, Zurgo sends the other villains to ransack Tony's house and lynch Zippy and his friends. Dr. Whiskers uses the mind-control machine to mind control everyone in both Manhattan and San Francisco (including Vanessa's parents and uncle). In Manhattan, the mind controlled citizens burn down and destroy Vanessa's house. After Zippy and the others escape through a sinkhole that Ember hid using a sandbox, which destroys Tony's house soon after. Brian and Pepe arrive just in time to rescue the team and they all flee to London. That night while riding in Brian's truck to the airport, Zippy and his friends lament that they will never see any of their friends or do any of the fun things they used to do again, causing them to be sad and miss their old lives.

After arriving in London, they head to Brian's old apartment where they have to find a way to stop Zurgo and get the Star Crystal back. Vanessa explains to Brian about the situation and how she and Gabi met Zippy and Wet Willy. In Piccadilly Circus, Zippy, Wet Willy, Ceela, and Jenny suddenly see Dr. Summers outside of a movie theatre. Inside, they tell Summers that Robert and Zurgo are working together to find the Star Crystals. Summers tells them that this is there biggest mission yet to save the world since Flambo, Ember, and Pepe have the same mission. Suddenly, Vanessa discovers that she lost the Star Crystal necklace during the scuffle, and Wiggles finds it. While Ceela and Dr. Summers invent a computer and dimensonal vaccum device together, Zippy gathered the others together and Summers' old partner Buckaroo Bucky flies them all in a plane back to Ziptown. The gang look around the dystopian Ziptown, now called "Zurgotown" and are reunited with Billy, Cleo, Zalow, and Zane in Zippy's ruined treehouse, which was destroyed by the villains. They go to the Burger Shack and find Mr. Baxworth and Zack, but Hilda, Herb, Freddy, Baby Butch, Floppy, Pastrilum, and Vandit discover them and send them to Zurgo.

Zurgo hosts a mock game show in the funhouse and reveals that he'll be destroying Ziptown and many other cities around the world. Zippy and his friends are promptly sucked in a pinball machine by Zurgo and Dr. Whiskers, the latter using it to mess with them. During this, Zurgo warning against escaping at the risk of agitating the flint; everyone in the Z-Team save for Zippy. When Zurgo threatens to ignite the gasoline, Zippy escapes and triggers a blaze, but uses an explosive to blow its roof open, allowing water to rush in from above and douse the flames. With the help of Edmonton who decides to switch sides, Billy, Cleo, Vanessa, Gabi, and Pepe find the gang and help Zippy free the others. Zurgo and the other villains steal the stash of confiscated bombs to destroy Ziptown and transfer the rest of the bombs all around the world. Zalow, Zane, and Brian find Zack and Mr. Baxworth stuck in the toliet and frees them. As they go to free the others, they are confronted by Zurgo and Wiggles and demand him to hand over all the rest of Star Crystals. However, Zurgo manages to use the scepter to mind control Brian and tells them to attack Zippy and his friends. When he has them cornered, Pepe sees Ceela's jelly that she made earlier in the film and throws it at Brian, causing him to come to his senses. Later, Zippy uses a hose to blasts jelly on some of their brainwashed friends.

Seeing that Ceela's jelly is the antidote, Zippy and his friends arm themselves with jelly guns and Zippy declares war. Zippy, his friends, Vanessa, Gabi, Brian, Pepe, Dr. Summers, and Edmonton get their weapons and confront Zurgo, Robert, the villains, and the mind controlled townspeople of Ziptown. They start the war, and Zippy and his team use jelly guns to free the citizens and defeat Zippy's enemies. Zippy and Zurgo fight through time and space while Flambo, with Pepe's aid fights Whiskers on a rooftop where Pepe could destroy the mind control device. Wiggles creates a blaster to shoot neon green glue at zip people and pushes the lever on the machine further that starts causing the portals and the inhabitants and creations to be violently glued perceived perfect creations together permanently. Wiggles reveals that he blackmails Pepe, Zippy, Vanessa, and the rest of the world into making him their new leader and buy his Sugar Rush candy company products or he will destroy them all if they don't. But Vanessa stubbornly refuses and Wiggles loses what's left of his sanity as he decides to kill both Vanessa and Pepe by using a claw to put them on his conveyor stamper.

However, his plan is thwarted, when Flambo knocks Dr. Whiskers into a release button that causes Vanessa and Pepe to be released and Pepe pushed the emergency button and gets the Star Crystal and destroys the mind control device, both freeing the remaining townspeople and everyone around the world. Pepe launches a basket over Wiggles' shoulders, incapacitating him. Distraught, Wiggles falls in despair over his failure. Wet Willy accidentally knocks Triampathol into the meat grinder during the fight, which causes most of the villains to flee before Zippy traps them in a big bubble and Billy uses Ceela and Summers' dimensonal vaccum device to suck them into a computer, leaving them stuck in whatever universe. Zurgo drinks the last bottle of Triampathol causing him to turn monsterous, grow into giant-size and have the ability to breath fire and shoot lasers from his eyes. During the battle against Zurgo, Zippy's friends come to his and Flambo's aid. Just when Zippy's gun is out of jelly, Zippy, using his magic skills and with help from Wet Willy, gets the scepter and uses it to shrink Zurgo and remove his powers. He then destroys the scepter which frees the Star Crystal. The tower then begins to collapse, as the burgers begin to explode due to the overuse of Triampathol (because when too much of the chemical is added, the food that is used for under a cooker might explode). Unfortunately, Zurgo's bombs detonate, causing Ziptown to tear apart at the plates below the cities around the world. Zippy and Vanessa quickly form all five Star Crystals together and Zippy wishes for the entire world to be restored to normal by reattaching the plates. Zurgo escapes on a bee, only for Mr. Baxworth to flick him away into the same forest where Zippy and Wet Willy got stranded in. Robert finally agrees to zip people and humanity being equal but only did so to make money.

With their enemies defeated, Mr. Baxworth gets the Zip Burger secret formula back. Zippy and the gang are hailed as heroes and celebrated by the people from Ziptown, Manhattan, and London. With Ziptown and the entire world back to normal, the Burger Shack then returns to business and the celebration is ready to begin. Robert decides The Burger Shack and the Sugar Rush Candy Company will collaborate with each other to make up for his father's past mistakes. Mr. Baxworth then holds the door open for Damian who turns out to be the same person who took his wallet and Mr. Baxworth goes after him. Vanessa, Gabi, Brian, and Pepe join the celebration with Zippy and his friends. Throughout the film, The Narrator is occasionally shown narrating the film to explain things to Orion and the viewers. In a post-credits scene, Jack and Janet eat the entire feast by themselves, being quite satisfied.

Development[]

Zippy: The Movie was long-planned; Series co-creator Brandon Greene has approached Walt Disney Animation Studios for a film based on the show, but they refused twice for more than a year. They were worried that despite the popularity of the cartoon, the film could potentially be a box office disappointment, like The Bob's Burgers Movie was. Even Disney stuggled with other films based on their cartoon shows like, DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp and Teacher's Pet, which were also both box office failures. Brandon's sister and co-creator Kyla Greene was concerned about the challenge of Zippy doing something more cinematically-consequential and inspiring without losing what he called the Zippy "cadence". While on a break from season five post-production, "To do a 75-minute movie about Zippy playing a baseball game would be a mistake, I think this had to be Zippy in a great adventure. That's where the comedy's coming from, having these two naïve characters, Zippy and Wet Willy, a doofus and an idiot, on this incredibly dangerous heroic quest with all the odds against them."

Writing[]

In 2024, the Greene siblings and the show's staff stopped making episodes to work on the film after the show's fourth season. The film's plot originally had Zippy and friends traveling to another dimension and find out about Flambo and Ember's secret; an obvious reference to the 2011 film, Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension (2011), this was later said by Michaela Dietz (the voice of Zippy) to be a "joke" plot to keep fans busy. Brandon and Kyla directed the film and wrote it with five and is produced by animators from the show (Cameron Perez, Julia Vickerman, Jake Zubrod, and Daniel Wresch) teaming up with animators and producers from Disney Animation Studios (Jennifer Lee, Clark Spencer, and Roy Conli). Perez said, "It was hugely fun although it did get kind of gamy in there." At the beginning of the series, Brandon screened a number of Disney shorts and work by two cartoon characters: Bendy and SpongeBob SquarePants, both obvious inspirations for Zippy. For the film, the writers created a hero's quest in: the search for the Star Crystals, which Brandon got part of these ideas from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and the Nintendo DS game Mario Party DS. Mae Whitman (the voice of Ceela) said about the plot, "It's just nuts. I'm continually dazzled and delighted with what these guys came up with."

When the film was completed, Kyla wanted to end the series "so it wouldn't jump the shark". However, Disney Channel desired more episodes and Brandon said he's has more thoughts about what to do with Zippy; Kyla stated: "Well, there was concern when we did the movie [in 2027] that the show had peaked. There were concerns among executives at Disney." As a result, Kyla resigned as the series' co-showrunner and Perez resigned as the series' producer to continue on his own series on Nickelodeon "The Mel Twins", appointing Brandon to remain as showrunner (even when leaves to make animated films for a little while). Perez was one of Brandon's favorite crew members: "[I] totally trusted him." Kyla no longer wrote or ran the show on a day-to-day basis, but reviewed each episode and submitted suggestions: "I figure when I'm pretty old I can still paint I don't know about running shows." Dietz, Greg Cipes (the voice of Wet Willy), and the crew confirmed that they had completed four episodes for broadcast on Disney Channel in early 2027, and planned to finish a total of about 20 for the fourth season. In 2038, Kyla returned to the show following the completion of the second film as an executive producer, having greater creative input and attending crew meetings.

Critical response[]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Zippy: The Movie holds an approval rating of 75% based on 105 reviews, with an average rating of 6.5/10. Its critical consensus reads, "Zippy: The Movie won't win over many viewers who aren't fans of the show, but for the converted, it's another colorful burst of manic fun." Metacritic (which uses a weighted average) assigned Zippy: The Movie a score of 64 out of 100 based on 27 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B" on an A+ to F scale.

Andrew Barker of Variety praised the film for "never even feigning a lick of seriousness"; he felt the film is too long. Barker said the film would prove "popular among the franchise's key grade-schooler and head-shop-owner demographics". Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter said the film's animation styles failed "to create a cohesive whole in spite of all the inspired non sequiturs ... the Disney hand drawn stuff never satisfyingly jibes with the traditional nonsense down below", and would likely be a box office success. Barbara VanDenburgh of The Arizona Republic gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of five, saying, "The plot is straightforward, predictable and slight, no more intricate a plot than a 15-minute TV episode would have. It's the freewheeling madness of its execution that makes the movie such a trip – as in acid trip."

Elizabeth Weitzman of the New York Daily News gave Zippy: The Movie four stars out of five, saying; "The spirit of the series remains true: cheerfully random jokes, blink-and-you'll-miss-them references and, above all, a silly, stubbornly sentimental streak that only the crabbiest cynic could dismiss". Colin Covert of the Star Tribune gave the film three stars out of five, saying it "weaves a silly – and often funny – spell. It's a scrappy little B-movie that zips along rather entertainingly." Jen Chaney of The Washington Post gave the film two stars out of four, saying; it's "fun for the whole family", praising it for its moments of suspense as well as its references to popular culture.
