Young Avengers: First Steps is an action-adventure superhero video game of the superhero genre, developed by 1010 Games Ltd (with association of Mighty Picnic) and published by Marvel Games and Disney Interactive for Apple Arcade, Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS5/PS4 and Xbox Series X/S, It was the first ever game to be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, albeit in a alternate universe, and it's loosely based on the comic series of the same name and a soft reboot of The Young Avengers franchise.
Voice talents in the games are provided by an ensemble all-star cast, including original actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe aside from a few others (Tim Roth for example).
A sequel was made with the main cast returning.
Story[]
- The animation of the game's scenario and characters are equivalent to the ones in Marvel's Spider-Man and it sequels (Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2) while the story cutscenes use the art-style of the Disney+'s animated series What If...? and it's spin-off, Marvel Zombies with the actors and actresses' likeness.
- It's set in an alternate timeline (known as Earth-45678) of MCU where superheroes (aside from the newly formed Young Avengers and Captain America) on Earth are forced into hiding by United States Department of Damage Control (led by "President" Ross/Red Hulk) for the extensive amount of damage and debt they caused and takes place between late 2024-5 to early 2026.
Premise[]
In a timeline where Damage Control has convinced the U.S government that superheroes of human and alien origins are illegal, Kamala Khan and Peter Parker (Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man) has assembled a group consisting of: young heroes, sidekicks and some of royalty to fight back against President Ross and his newly-made Dark Avengers in order to make super-heroes and crime-fighting legal again while avoiding prosecution from the Soviaka Accords Relocation Act.
Gameplay[]
In leui of the Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham games (and even some elements from the critically reviled Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League) traditional free-flow combat system with Grand Theft Auto franchise' sandbox and wanted levels, 1010 Games has developed a new type of gameplay system that caters to the team-centric nature of the game. Players are able to switch into 2 to 8 characters at a time to go on a single mission. While in an mission, players can switch from teammate to teammate on the fly, allowing the person to do the right job.
Each character has their own unique specific set of skills and traversal system that may come in handy for a particular mission. Hacking, science and engineering might call for Peter, Riri, Cassie and Shuri's superior skills in technology and engineering, even Joaquin. Conversely, a mission that requires brute strength, hand-to-hand combat fighting and flight is suitable for Joaquin and G'iah, etc and they're controlled by a responsive A.I. Team diversity is always important.
While in free roam, same as always in Lego Games but with a twist, you can explore the whole entire world (Mexico, Afghan, New York, San Francisco, etc), stop regular crimes and help ordinary civilians even those in poverty any means (helping with the groceries, helping firefighters, police and take selfies with them, provides the homeless with basic necessities like food, water and clothes) and you can collect some money, In a unexpected twist, You can travel in space to different planets like Aladna and Hala.
Like Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequels, you can change the time of day (day, afternoon, evening and night) and weather (sunny, snowy, rainy/stormy, cloudy, etc) and after finishing the main campaign, You can play as the main characters and.
If you stay on the Belfry/S.A.B.E.R. Safehouse and Triskelion for a little bit longer, There are small dialogues of the Young and 1970s Avengers interacting with each other.
For characters like Odin, G'iah, Battlestar, and Black Widow (Melina Vostokoff), They can use the weapon wheel ala GTA and God of War games.
The traversal system and others[]
The Young/70s Avengers members can either fly (Ironheart, Falcon, G'iah, Captain Marvel, HYDRA Stomper, Odin, Adam Warlock, Wasp carrying Ant-Man or Ant-Man riding on a flying ant, Billy carrying Tommy through telekinesis, etc), web-sling (Spider-Man only) or use super-speed (Tommy carrying Billy through his super-speed) while others travel by foot (Kamala through her constructs, Stature, Kate Bishop, Black Panthers; Shuri and T'Chaka, Battlestar. Melina Vostokoff, etc) and also interact with various elements to get around, Here's non-playable characters, including civilians will recognize the members, and react to them in a different ways, depending on the game's progression. Mixed reactions include bewildering conversations, high-fiving and taking photos of them and send it on social media platform to gain clout by spreading misinformation.
While traveling, The members of The Avengers (either Young or 70s) can glimpse views of iconic MCU locations and landmarks all present throughout the map. Additionally, podcasts, tweets and Youtube videos about the Young Avengers will sometimes play new updates, with reports based on recently completed missions and side-missions and MCU's events (in news reports in the 1970s).
If a civilian dies, then it's game over and you'll have to restart all over again and your progress will remain after you've saved it. Buildings and national monuments can be destroyed (thanks to the addition of destructible environments) as long as there are no people in the middle of the carnage or inside a building, If you destroy too many private properties and injure civilians, you'll gain five stars and the authorities (police, military, etc) will be called against you and the character you're playing as.
Uncommon for TT's Lego games and Funko Fusion, the three hearts elements are removed from the game, instead, the character will have a health-bar if the character taken damage (small or extensive), the character's appearance will change dramatically: bloodied and battered, tattered uniforms and dented, broken armors, unkempt hair, bruises, claws marks, dislocated body-parts, etc.

Reception[]
The game was received with critical acclaim.
Fan's reaction was mixed but overwhelmingly positive. They've praised the tight continuity within DLCs, humor, decently-sized roster of wide array of playable characters, gameplay, the 1970s DLC and especially free roam but the story can be a bit convoluted and cliché in execution. Fans thought that this what Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Marvel's Avengers should've been instead being looter-shooters with live service and microtransaction elements.
Triva[]
- This is the second 1010 Games Ltd title and the first ever Marvel Cinematic Universe video game to be released.
- The first MCU game to be completely free roam.
- The first MCU game to have all of the actors from the MCU reprised their respective voice roles minus Groot.
- This marks the first console gaming debut of: The Maximoff twins, Battlestar, G'iah, Mar-Vell, and Joaquín Torres/Falcon, as Spider-Man, Stature, Kamala Khan, Black Panther (Shuri), Groot, Ant-Man (Hank Pym) and The Wasp (Janet van Dyne), HYDRA Stomper, Odin, The Ancient One, Xu Wenwu, and others have gaming appearances before (mostly in mobile game apps, standalone games, crossover games and Lego Marvel games).
- This is the first MCU project that take risks with controversial ideas and topics in the MCU fandom like: Spider-Man, Shuri, G'iah, Joaquín Torres/Falcon, Groot in the Young Avengers and the Midnight Sons, respectively. but with a different approach.
- The developers of the game took the Norse mythology version of Kratos from God of War franchise as their inspiration for Odin, which is appropriate considering Odin and Kratos are the Gods of War in their respective mythologies.
- Adam and Riri's pajama costumes resemble Luke and Lyla's pajamas from the PBS Kids show, Lyla in the Loop, which both have Dave Peth, Fracaswell Hyman and Huy Tran, and Mighty Picnic as their collab.
- This is the first game that doesn't include (despite having un-credited cameos in the post-credits scene) other remaining and new Avengers members like: Hulk, She-Hulk, Hawkeye (Clint Barton), War Machine, Ant-Man (Scott Lang), Shang Chi, Wong, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Monica Rambeuau (Photon), and Thor Odinson.
- Ross' Dark Avengers are resemblance of The Seven from The Boys, a parody of both Marvel and DC.
- As both involve a "superhero team" that are believed to operate like an superhero team, in reality, every action they do is only fuel to increase different plans (Ross' Dark Avengers: Ross' presidential campaign, money and glorified images as heroes).
- Ross' U.S presidential campaign is reminiscent of Dan Schneider's time on Nickeledeon.
- Coincidentally, Michael Douglas and Annette Bening worked previously in "The American President".
- G'iah tendencies to demean humanity selfishly are completely revealed because of Intelligencia framing the Skrulls as "Frog-Chameleon", which can be seen as a racial slur to the Skrulls.
- Earth-838 Tommy is confirmed to be genderfluid as he is seen wearing female clothes and is a big fan of Madonna's bold fashion, albeit toned down.
- During development, the staff of this game did a lots of research on Spider-Man, Kamala Khan and The Young Avengers's established traits but keep them consistent like they were (like Spider-Man being the capable co-leader and a stronger vigilante, Tommy's fun-loving, prankster personality, etc)
- Kamala Khan, Spider-Man and the Young Avengers team are the anchor beings of Earth-45768.
- According to writer and director, Huy Tran, The main' ages of The Young Avengers group are:
- Kamala Khan is 16 years old.
- Peter Parker/Spider-Man is 15-16 years old (would've been 43 years old had not been snapped).
- Kate Bishop is 22 years old.
- Cassie Lang/Stature is 18 years old.
- Black Panther Shuri is either 19 or 22 years old.
- The Maximoff twins are both 10 years old, making them the youngest in the group.
- Groot is still in his "Swole Groot" form, equivalent of an young adult in his early 20s.
- Joaquín Torres/Falcon is in his early 20s (23 years old when he was a victim of the Snap, despite being youthful).
- Riri Williams/Ironheart is 19 years old.
- G'iah is in her early 20s (physically 25, but 83 years old in Skrull years when she was snapped), making her the oldest in the group.
- Avengers: The Day that Orgocorp invaded Earth is the only DLC where none of The Young Avengers didn't appear.
- Joaquín Torres/Falcon is noticeably absent from the 1980s DLC storyline, It was confirmed that he was helping President Sam Wilson/Captain America and The Avengers out on a mission in Afghanistan and was completely absent from the movie.
- Strangely, Xu Wenwu, Joaquín Torres and Adam Warlock weren't present in the Trans-Dimensional Avengers DLC, considering that Joaquín Torres is a part-time Avenger while Xu Wenwu and Adam Warlock are AWOL.
