Main[]

  • Ryuji Himura (voiced by Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese) & Paul Mercier (English) - the main protagonist of the game who is a new member of the Yakuza that is infamous for his incredible punch, which is strong enough to break someone's bones. He seems cold and uncaring but has a very strong moral code and sees his spot as a Yakuza as a way to keep other criminals at bay. His tatto is a Chinese dragon, which wraps around his body and has its head on his back.
  • Hikaru Chisaka (voiced by Junichi Suwabe (Japanese) & Jason Liebrecht (English) - Ryuji's main rival in the game who is another new member of the Yakuza. He and Ryuji have a complicated relationship, as they disagree on many things but are the closest thing to friends the other has. He sees the Yakuza as a way of growing more powerful and controlling Japan from the shadows. His tattoo is the head of a tiger that is roaring at something while surrounded by leaves.
  • Daichi Kawaguchi (voiced by Takehito Koyasu (Japanese) & TBA (English) - a high-ranking member of the Tojo Clan and Ryuji and Hikaru's boss. He is a stern and serious man that is on a constant quest for revenge for events in his past. He wants himself and his men to be seen as monsters in order to terrify his enemies as much as possible and sees Ryuji as the perfect monster. His tattoo is an oni sitting in a bamboo forest with a kanabo slumped over its shoulder.

Supporting[]

  • Dr. Kana Hayashi (voiced by TBA (Japanese) & TBA (English) - a doctor who meets Ryuji after patching him up after a fight. She and Ryuji quickly become close and begin dating, but she is unaware of him being a Yakuza. She is a very up-beat and is fond of telling random jokes, constantly trying to make Ryuji laugh. Ryuji considers her the only thing he truly cares about.
  • Kentaro Yokoyama (voiced by TBA (Japanese) & TBA (English) - Ryuji's adoptive father who took him in after finding him orphaned on the street and attempting to pickpocket him. After adopting him, Kentaro took care of him the best he could but was never able to make Ryuji happy, only content. He has sworn to never rest until Ryuji expresses a proper emotion.
  • The Florist of Sai (voiced by Yoshiaki Fujiwara (Japanese) & Dwight Schultz (English) - a recurring character throughout the game and a returning character from the previous Yakuza titles. The Florist of Sai is an overweight man who has cameras all around the city and sells information in exchange for money and favors. Ryuji and Hikaru visit him several times throughout the game.
  • Kazuma Kiryu (voiced by Takaya Kuroda (Japanese) & Darryl Kurylo (Englsh) - the previous protagonist of the Yakuza series who is a former Yakuza member that faked his own death to get away from the Yakuza. Near the end of the game, Ryuji seeks him out to learn his infamous techniques (such as the Komaki Style) in order to defeat the game's final antagonist.

Antagonists[]

  • Yamato Suzuki (voiced by TBA (Japanese) & TBA (English) - the first antagonist encountered in the game and the oldest one out of them all. Yamato is a Yakuza leader dating back decades and has run several schemes. He is very big in the Omi Alliance, who are the Tojo Clan's main rivals. Encountering him kickstarts most of the major themes of the game.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Ryuji's name is spelt 竜二 in Japanese, the kanji of which mean "dragon" and "two". This is a reference to the fact he is the next main character of the game after Kazuma Kiryu, who was infamously known as "The Dragon of Dojima".
  • Explanations for the characters' tattoos:
    • Ryuji's dragon is following the tradition of Yakuza main characters having dragon tattoos while also being a reference to the fact he has the word "dragon" in his name.
    • Hikaru's tiger represents the fact he is rivals with Ryuji and is about equal to him in strength but has very different ideals than him. The tiger and the dragon are seen as equal in power in Chinese mythology.
    • Daichi's oni with a kanabo represents the fact he wants to be seen as an unstoppable monster. Oni are legendary Japanese monsters that are incredibly powerful and giving one a kanabo usually shows that they are even more powerful than before.
