This is a remade version of the 1970 TV movie of the same name that opened in cinemas on December 7, 1984, with hundreds of puppets created by the Jim Henson Creature Shop in collaboration with Will Vinton Studios and Ray Harryhausen, and with music score conducted by Richard Allen Harvey. The movie is rated PG for several dark and disturbing moments.

While there weren’t any human actors in the movie (because they didn’t live at the same time as dinosaurs and early mammals), live animals (including hippos, bison, pronghorns, wild boars, and horses) would sometimes appear with them occasionally during this film, most notably in wide shots. Animatronic dinosaurs and prehistoric monsters were co-designed by Andrew Howatt and Roger Payne, while Rupert Oliver did the storyline for the film.
