Plot

Official transcript

Long ago, Humans and Monsters lived together in peace, until war broke out, and the monsters were sealed underground by a magic barrier. Many years later, a small child falls through a hole on MT. Ebbot, into the underground.

A small child finds herself in the underground, and encounters a talking flower named Flowey. Flowey tricks her into thinking he wants to be friends with her, but quickly reveals himself to be evil, and tries to kill her. However, she is saved by a goat monster named Toriel, who guides her into the ruins.

Once in the ruins, Toriel guides the child through, helping her solve some puzzles made to guard the ruins, before leaving to get some supplies for a surprise. The child continues to explore the ruins against her wishes though, and encounters a variety of monsters that help her complete the rest of the puzzles after she befriends them, one of those monsters being a ghost named Napstablook.

After solving many puzzles, she returns to Toriel who gives the child her very own room. Toriel wishes to raise the child as her own, and keep her protected, but when the child tells Toriel she wishes to go home, she attempts to destroy the exit to the ruins, only for the child to stop her. Toriel then makes the child prove herself strong enough to survive, but instead of fighting, she continuously spares Toriel, and she soon accepts that the child wants to leave, and lets her go.

Production

Production of Undertale began in mid-2021 and was announced in January 2022 by the creator of the original game, Toby Fox.

In March 2022, the main voice cast was revealed by Fox. It featured Scarlett Johansson, Donald Glover, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Karen Gillan, Laura Harrier, Jason Momoa, Bill Skarsgård, and Jacob Tremblay. Fox said that other actors were selected, but at the time were kept secret. However, he has stated that Jim Carrey is involved somehow.

On April 1st 2022, Fox made a tweet that revealed a joke version of the rest of the cast, consisting of Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Chris Pratt and Danny Devito. The next day, he revealed it to be an April Fool's joke, and revealed the actual rest of the cast, including Kai Cech, Rob Paulsen, JD McCrary, Tara Strong, and even fellow Undertale developer Temmie Chang.

The film began filming its live-action footage in 2023.

On September 15 2023, 2 years before the film's release (and on the original game's 8th anniversary) a teaser trailer was released, showing Frisk after she fell into the Underground, and going through a big purple door, before displaying the title card. It also revealed Lionsgate to be the producers and distributors for the film.

In Spring of 2024, the full trailer was finally released. Along with it, Fox announced that production for the movie was 100% complete. Throughout the year, more trailers would be released, but additional info on it would be kept under wraps until the official release.
