Writing[]
According to showrunner Matt Braly, the inspiration for the series came from the 2007 Transformers films, and how the Decepticons' plans was "rooted in them essentially creating an army of child soldiers", an idea he felt had potential for a television series. For the series, he studied how real life child soldiers are raised in order to potray the concept accuretly. Regarding the series' potrayal of Megatron, Braly wanted to potray him "less as a supervillain, and more as an evil military general who sits behind the front lines. So that when he does gets up from his seat and gets his hands dirty, it means the good guys are about to face a hell of a challenge".
Braly deliberatedly avoided watching Transformers: Earthspark to avoiding copying it as both series have a similar focus on newly-birth Cybertronians. He also choose not to include humans in the series as he felt "they weren't necessary for the story we wanted to tell". Braly also wanted to distinguish the series from previous Transformers projects by focusing on "the Cybertronian civilian side of the war. On those who don't want to go on fighting or aren't old enough to join the war effort".
