Tom and Jerry Go to Watership Down is a Warner Bros Movie based on the novel by Richard Adams.

Plot[]

Tom and Jerry stumble upon the Sandleford Rabbit Warren where they befriend two rabbit-brothers named Hazel and Fiver as well as a young rabbit named Pipkin perceives a frightening vision of his warren's imminent destruction. When the few fail to convince their chief rabbit of the need to leave, they set out on their own with a small rabbit-warren to find a new home.... leading to a journey with dangers and obstacles such as General Woundwart, the iron-fisted and despotic rabbit-chief to Efrafa.

Characters[]

  • Tom, a grey cat. Gruff but well-meaning.
  • Jerry, a brown mouse who gets on Tom's nerves. Heroic, kind, jolly, and clever.
  • Tuffy, a grey mouse and Jerry's ward.
  • Hazel, a brown rabbit who leads the rabbits from Sandleford and eventually becomes Chief Rabbit. Though Hazel is not particularly large or powerful, he is loyal, brave, kind, honourable, and a quick thinker. He sees the good in each individual, and what they bring to the table; in so doing, he makes sure that no one gets left behind, thus earning the respect and loyalty of his warren. He often relies on Fiver's advice, and trusts in his brother's instincts.
  • Fiver, Hazel's little brother. As a seer, he has visions and very strong instincts. Fiver is one of the most intelligent rabbits in the group. He is quiet and intuitive, and though he does not directly act as a leader, the others listen to and follow his advice.
  • Bigwig, a big rabbit easily recognisable for his hair-shock on his head. Gruff and sarcastic but heroic, clever, honourable, kind, loyal, and jolly. He becomes the Captain to Hazel's Owsla.
  • Blackberry, a clever rabbit-doe with black-tipped ears. She is often capable of understanding concepts that the other rabbits find incomprehensible. She realises, for instance, that wood floats, and the rabbits use this tactic twice to travel on water. She also works out how to dismantle the snare that almost kills Bigwig, saving him. She is one of Hazel's most trusted advisers.
  • Pipkin, a small but plucky, kind, loyal, jolly and clever rabbit. His habit on making pals with others leads to potential allies.
  • Dandelion, a rabbit known for his storytelling talent and his speed.
  • Hawkbit, a grey rabbit who always has a ironic or sarcastic comment for every situation, but is a dependable member of the warren whenever help is needed.
  • Strawberry, a buck rabbit who leaves Cowslip's Warren with Hazel. Strawberry is strong and sleek but not as hardy as the other rabbits given his warren upbringing but learns quickly and gets along well with the group.
  • Holly, a grey rabbit. Former captain of the Sandleford Warren Owsla, escapes with Bluebell when his warren is destroyed by men. He is near death when he finds the warren at Watership Down, but is nursed back to health by Droopy and becomes one of Hazel's most trusted advisers.
  • Bluebell, the only rabbit besides Holly to survive destruction of the Sandleford Warren and reach Watership Down. Bluebell is a compulsive joker whose chattering has often kept the others running.
  • Threarah, the Chief Rabbit of the Sandleford warren. He dismisses Fiver's warning as an attempt by Fiver to increase his status in the warren and lambastes Bigwig for interrupting his nap by bringing Hazel and Fiver before him. This leads Bigwig to quit the Owsla and join Hazel in leaving the warren. After Captain Holly tells him of the escape, he decides that they are not worth chasing after. Despite his dismissive behavior toward Hazel, Fiver, and Bigwig, he is remembered by Holly (and acknowledged by Fiver) for his practicality and his ability to think things through in order to make (what he thought) were informed decisions. He dies in the destruction of the Sandleford warren.
  • Toadflak, A member of the Sandleford Owsla who is also somewhat of a grumpy and arrogant bully who keeps claiming that cowslips are only for the Owsla to enjoy.
  • Kehaar, a black-headed seagull who befriended the Sandleford survivors when they healed his wing which got wounded by Mogtab. Clever, brave, kind, eccentric, and jolly.
  • Hannah, a mouse who befriends the Sandleford survivors when they help Kehaar. Plucky, eccentric, kind, jolly, sarcastic, and clever.
  • Bark, a European badger who befriends the Sandleford survivors and helped the lot escape a bloodhound. The sole-survivor from a group who was slaughtered by poachers.
  • Clover, a rabbit who left the Farm-Hutch to join Hazel's group. Hawkbit's love-interst. Wise, kind, pluky, sarcastic ad jolly.
  • Spartina, a former captain from the Efrafan Owsla. Bigwig's love-interest and Campion's sister. Honourable, brave, wise, kind, jolly, and sarcastic.
  • Silverweed, a rabbit who left Cowslip and joined Hazel. A storyteller and seer.
  • Primrose, a rabbit-doe from Efrafra. A seer. Hazel's love-interest. Feisty, kind, loyal, jolly, wise, and honourable.
  • Vilthuril, a rabbit-doe from the Farm-Hutch. Fiver's love-interest. Bold, wise, kind, loyal and jolly.
  • Campion, a former captain from Efrafra who left due to being sickend by Woundwort's iron-fisted reign. Blackberry's love-interest. Brave, honourable, kind, wise, jolly, and loyal.
  • Blackavar, a black rabbit who escaped Efrafra. Scarred with torn ears due to torture by Woundwort for rebelling. Brave, kid, loyal, jolly, sarcastic, and clever.
  • Nelthilta, a young doe, spirited and rebellious but reckless. When she thinks she's going to escape with Bigwig's group she can't resist dropping hints by taunting Vervain, whereupon she is arrested and forced to confess to the Council, nearly ruining the whole plan.
  • General Woundwort, the iron-fisted rabbit-leader to Efrafa. Fearless, single-minded, self-righteous, arrogant, and brutally efficient, Woundwort was orphaned at a young age; his father was shot dead by a human and his mother was killed shortly afterwards by a weasel. Though he was rescued and raised by a kind human-professor, this trauma was Woundwort's formative experience, as he engineered and founded the Efrafa warren specifically to minimize notice from humans. In keeping with this motive, rabbits must graze in shifts while Efrafa's Owsla maintains a perimeter, partially to detect and drive off elil and partially to prevent escapes. By the time of the story, Woundwort's efforts to protect his rabbits are so successful that Efrafa has become miserably overpopulated, but he still refuses to permit expansion or departures, conceding only to appoint a ruling Council, and to introduce the dangerous Wide Patrols, which keep his Owsla fit and experienced, as well as keeping the warren's numbers down due to encounters with elil. At the same time, any wandering, unknown rabbit is required to be brought to his warren to keep the number of bucks in line with the disproportionate number of does. He is still troubled by the loss of his parents and has occasional flashbacks to it.
  • Vervain, a captain among the Efrafran Owsla. A brutal, sarcastic, cunning, iron-fisted and sly rabbit with a scar near one eye. He views Campion as a sentimental pacifist who should be removed.
  • Chevril, a captain among the Efrafran Owsla. A brutal, gruff, cunning and iron-fisted rabbit.
  • Avens, a captain amogn the Efrafran Owsla. Sneaky and cunning.
  • Bartsia, a captain among the Efrafran Owsla who Woundwort chose to survey Blackavar.
  • Cowslip, the chief rabbit on the Warren with the Shining Wires. A self-righteous, greedy, arrogant, and sly rabbit who uses the Sandleford survivors to try to survive.... only to be betrayed by Strawberry and Silverweed.
  • Droopy, a gloomy-looking but heroic and kind bulldog. On this film, he's a professor and vet who helps the Sandleford survivors. He reveals Woundwort's origins and turns out to'd been taught by the professor who kept Woundwort in a cage.
  • McWolf, a sly and cunning wolf. In this one, he's the farmer who owns Cowslip's farm and captures rabbits with snares.
  • Mogtab, a tabby cat. Sly, cunning, arrogant, and aggressive.
  • Dobbus, a doberman. Hot-headed, arrogant, and brutal.
  • The Black Rabbit of Inle, a servant of Frith who delivers dead rabbit's souls.
  • The Narrator... revealed to be Bipkin as an adult.

Quotes[]

  • Narrator: Long ago, the great Frith made the world. He made all the stars and the world lived among the stars. Frith made all the animals and birds and, at first, made them all the same. Now, among the animals was El-Ahrairah, the Prince of Rabbits. He had many friends and they all fed on plants together. But after a time, the rabbits wandered everywhere, multiplying and eating as they went.... risking famine. Then Frith said to El-Ahrairah, "PEl-Ahrairah, you must control your people... there are too many." But El-Ahrairah ignored him and cockily said to Frith, "My people are the strongest in the world." This angered Frith, so he determined to get the better of El-Ahrairah for his arrogance. He gave a present to every animal and bird, making each one different from the rest. When the fox came and others, like the dog and cat, hawk and ferret, and the eagle and the owl, and the badger and the stoat, and the wolf and the human...... to each of them, Frith gave a fierce desire to hunt and slay and devour the children of El-Ahrairah. When El-Ahrairah found out, he was afraid. But Frith took pity on him.. giving him and his people bigger ears and bigger feet. And he declared....£All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they would kill you and eat you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed.
  • Bigwig: Hazel? It is Hazel, isn't it?

Hazel: It is.

Bigwig: What are you doing here?

Hazel: [Motioning to Fiver] We want to see the chief rabbit, Bigwig.

Bigwig: We? You mean they want to see him too? I'm okay with a mouse since they're harmless. But a cat? Why?

Jerry: I know Tom has mood issues. But he can be trusted.

Hazel: Yes.

Fiver: I must tell him.

Bigwig: What on Earth for?

Fiver: Well, I...

Holly: Bigwig?

Bigwig: Sir.

Tom: Who's he?

Bigwig: Captain Holly, leader to our Owlsla.

Holly: What do they want? And why did they bring a cat? The mouse is okay. But cats are far from trustworthy. HMMM.

Bigwig: They want to see the chief rabbit.

Holly: What for?

Fiver: Well, I...

Holly: Send the cat away.

Bigwig: I'll take care of it, Holly.

[Turns back to Hazel]

Hazel: Look, Bigwig, when have I EVER asked to see the chief rabbit?

Bigwig: [Thinks over, hesitating] All right, all right.

[Goes into warren, speaks to Chief Rabbit for a moment, comes back up]

Bigwig: Come along then. But the cat stays out.

Tom: Fine with me. Too small for me. Can I listen?

Bigwig: Yes. But not too close. Holly finds it difficult to trust cats since a Russian blue devoured up his mum when he was young.

  • Fiver: Look. Look. That's the place for us. High, lonely hills, where the wind and the sound carry, and the ground's as dry as straw in a barn. That's where we ought to be. That's where we have to get to.
  • Bigwig: There's a dog loose in the woods! A bloodhound.

Tom: A bloodhound? Crumbs. A sharp nose.

Hawkbit: Oh, that does it! We're done for.

  • Jerry: Why did you help?

Bark: I know how it is to be lost. My family died... slaughtered by poachers. Shot simply coz they blamed us for a plague on their cows and sheep. Only I survived.

Bipkin: How sad. I lost my mum and dad to poachers too.

Hazel: We're sorry.

Bipkin: I was wrong about her,. Boy.

  • Keehar: I'm lost. Looking for the North Sea. Yes.
  • Silver: : [to Hazel] Look, we can't go on this way. It keeps getting worse and worse wherever we go. Where ARE we going?

Hazel: It won't be much longer, then we can all rest.

Hawkbit: How MUCH longer? We never should have left. Suppose Fiver's all wrong? We want to go back and find out.

Blueberry: Go back? After all we've been through?

Bigwig: And probably get killed for assaulting Captain Holly? Talk sense, for Frith's sake!

  • Hawkbit: A wolf as a protector.

Dandylion: Wolves can;t be trusted. Preds.

Jerry: I thought humans wiped out the wolves on Britain. The last one was shot on Scotland during the year 1680.

  • Bigwig: [Mocking Fiver's prophecies] I'm in a mist! I've got a funny feeling in my toe! Let's go on our heads now.

Bipkin: Really?

Bigwig: I was being sarcastic.

Bipkin: Oh. I wanted to go on my head. But Fiver could be right. I asked some about why I found some blood. They neglected to answer. And Strawberry seemed keen to warn us to leave.

Hazel: He could be right.

Bigwig: Not you too. Just because Fiver's your bro, you believe him.

Jerry: If we stay, we die.

Bigwig: Honestly. Just because Cowslip and his group act odd, you assume this is a trap.

(he leaps and gets caught on a snare)

Bigwig: I guess this is where you'd say 'Told ya so'.

  • Hazel: [mourning the supposedly-dead Bigwig] My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend stopped running today.

Fiver: I'm sorry. But you caused it. I warned you all. You ignored me.

Hawkbit: Let's get back.

Bipkin: But revenge is wrong.

Fiver: Yes. And even if we did win, we'd die. Look. More snares.

Jerry: Yes. I found McWolf putting 'em up. He set up this farm. He obviously thought 'Why should I keep rabbits in hutches when I can make the warren part of my farm'. He began to shoot all preds such as foxes, badgers, ferrets, stoats, owls, falcons, hawks, and polecats. He put up food so they could grow big..,.. and snared them each... not too many or he'd scared 'em away.

Strawberry: Yes. He did.

Blueberry: Why did the others refuse to help? You coulda helped.

Strawberry: McWolf fed us and protected us from preds.

Bark: Yes.... so he could eat them. He slew my family.

Hazel: Why did you neglect to tell..

Bipkin: So this was why you told me to go.

Straweberry: Yes. Cowslip forbid talk about the ones who McWolf took for they got food and protection. We feared nothing but the snare. He declared anyone who talked about it must be silenced.

Hazel: And you suggest we claim the warren. All we'd help ourselves to is misery and death.

Strawberry: Yes. I tried to save you all. I failed Bigwig. I'm sorry.

Bigwig: Zero need to cry over crushed dandelions.

All: BIGWIG!

Bark: He's one stubborn and tough rabbit.

Strawberry: I'm sorry.

Bigwig: Why? You warned Bipkin. It is I who should be sorry. Fiver. Bipkin. Hazel. Tom. Jerry I doubted you few. I'm sorry. Now someone get this stinking wire off me.

  • Cowslip: Go or die.

Bigwig: You can't fight. You lot forgot all the tricks and wisdom of our ancestors.

(he clobbers)

Bark: You'd betrayed your own people.

Cowslip: Get the monster away.

Bipkin: Monster? Rich from you.

Hazel: Come with us. You can relearn the story of El-Ahrairah and Frith.

Cowslip: El-Ahrairah is a lie cooked up by savages. McWolf is our protector. If we leave, we would be eaten by your pet.

Hazel: The snares would slay you if you stay.

  • Jerry: Good grief. It's Captain Holly.

Fiver: And Bluebell, his nephew.

Holly: [to Fiver] I remember you... you're the one who saw it coming... We shoulda listened to you and gotten them out.

Bipkin: What happened?

Holly: HUMANS!

All: Humans?

(flashbacks start)

Holly (narrating): On the night you left, we hunted. But the trail led to the river. You seemed to'd gone down it.... thus we lost your trail. Chief Thrererah cancelled the search to prevent deaths. But on the day after, it rained. The rest went underground... apart from Bluebell and I who were on watch. As we looked, humans popped up... led by a man with a big mustache. They used spades to block the holes up. Bluebell and I were confused coz they woulda sent ferrets underground to drive the rabbits out. Instead, they unleashed some poisonous gas. Bluebell and I got a whiff and it was terrible. We were lucky to be out. Many below were poisoned to death. But one of the men who was a stupid rookie had left a hole unblocked. Rabbits staggered out and got shot to death.... among then, poor Thrererah. Then some men and ladies popped up on machines.... tearing the countryside up with claws. Only Bluebell and I escaped by playing dead. We sneaked away to look for you lot.

(flashback end)

Holly: My fault. If I'd heeded you., they'd all be alive.

Hazel: There was nothing you coulda done.

Holly: Yep. It was rough. We met some rabbits led by Cowslip.

Jerry: We met him. A rogue.

Holly: Yes. When I mentioned you few, he ordered us slain. They tried to slay us.... hence my scars on my bottom. But they were poor fighters so we won.

Strawberry: I'm ashamed to'd been one of them.

Silverweed: Yes. I am too. I managed to get Holly and Bluebell to safety.

Holly: I assaulted Cowslip and used a snare to threaten him into telling us where you went.

(he sighes)

Holly: You lot were right and I was wrong. The rabbit who threatened you wasn't me. Another rabbit...... long, long ago.

  • General Woundwort: Your name?

Hyzenthlay: Hyzenthlay, sir.

General Woundwort: I'll be frank with you. You're safe here. Well get on with it!

Hyzenthlay: Sir, several of us propose an expedition for a new warren. Somewhere else.

General Woundwort: A new warren? Out of the question!

Hyzenthlay: But you don't understand. The system is breaking down.

General Woundwort: Explain that.

Hyzenthlay: Some of us can't produce litters, we're overcrowded.

General Woundwort: I want no further discussion about it.

Hyzenthlay: We'll go as far as you like!

General Woundwort: Here or anywhere else!

Hyzenthlay: I..

[she is approached threateningly by Vervain]

Hyzenthlay: [meekly] Thank you, sir.

[she leaves]

General Woundwort: Captain Vervain, have her watched.

Vervain: Yes, sir.

  • Droopy: I knew General Woundwort. He was a little rabbit. Orphaned. His dad shot by a poacher. His mum devoured by a stoat. I tended to him. But a cat picked on him. A Siamese one. She always picked on him... until Woundwort had enough and assaulted her. He got out from the cage and left. I thought he died. Seems I was wrong. His lust for revenge on humans has tainted his soul.
  • Hazel: Lord Frith, I know you've looked after us well, and it's wrong to ask even more of you. But my people are in terrible danger, and so I would like to make a bargain with you. My life in return for theirs.

Frith: There is not a day or night that a doe offers her life for her kittens, or some honest captain of Owsla, his life for his chief. But there is no bargain: what is, is what must be.

  • [after General Woundwort's last stand against a dog]

Narrator: General Woundwort's body was never found. It could be that he still lives his fierce life somewhere else, but from that day on, mother rabbits would tell their kittens that if they did not do as they were told, the General would get them. Such was Woundwort's monument, and perhaps it would not have angered him.
