The True Story of Strawberry Shortcake is a 2D flash animated YouTube series created by American Greetings and Iconix Brand Group, and produced by DiC Entertainment and WildBrain (formally DHX Media) in association with Del Mar Cartoons Ltd. and Warner Bros. Children's Productions. The show first premiered on YouTube on January 1st 2020. The show is rated TV-PG, though some episodes are rated TV-14.
It is the 5th (6th if Berry Bitty World is counted) generation of the Strawberry Shortcake franchise, with its elements and designs retained from the 2003 installment (although also being a full on remake with the same episodes, but with mass changes, including an expanded lore, new characters, episodes [and plots], and a proper series finale), but with a few changes. New voice actors filled in the roles with some new characters made for this series that are based on the versions made in the past shows from the franchise. This new show focuses on adventures taking place in the planet Strawberryland.
The original DHX Media-produced reboot was supposed to premiere in 2018. However, due to negative criticisms of the redesigns as put out by the company from the fans, DHX halted production and cancelled the series in favor of producing the series the captures the spirits of the 2003-08 re-incarnation, but with a few minor changes in terms of character design, and humor.
It was reported that on September 18, 2020, the series will end its run after four seasons. Season 4b aired on Strawberry Shortcake's Birthday (June 14th) 2021, and the finale was uploaded to YouTube on Christmas Day, 2021.
It was the subject to universal and critical acclaim from critics and fans, praising the series for its music, story, themes, animation, staying completely true to the continuity, having guest stars in certain episodes, and decent attempts to tackle many serious challenges, such as death, grief, trauma, puberty, true love, war, racism, terrorism, and mental disorders.
The series was succeeded by a series of non-canon mini episodes "meant to give obscure characters the spotlight"
Plot[]
Just when God thinks he's running out of ideas for different kinds of Earth, he gets an idea for a planet named Strawberryland that specializes in his family and the beauty of berry crops.
Some time in the mid to late 90s, three troubled souls found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time exiled to the dark, gloomy, barren wasteland called The Porcupine Peak Exile Colony. They became three mythical monsters known as the Peculiar Purple Pie Man, Sour Grapes I, and Johnnycake Cobbler.
One girl in particular, Strawberry, is destined to ascend to the throne as the queen, but nefarious outlaw Lord Aubergine, leader of the Porcupine Peak exile colony, unites the exiled folks into one army hell bent on dominating the world.
Differences[]
- Due to some episodes tackling serious issues, the show is intended for more mature audiences & is rated TV-PG, a first for the normally child-oriented & family-friendly franchise. Some episodes are rated TV-14 due to violence.
- We actually get to see Porcupine Peak, which is also bigger and badder (new minions include porcupines, Licorice Whip, & Captain Cackle)
- There are three different age groups: one for Apple Dumplin', one for Apricot, and one for Strawberry
- Frosty Puff lives in the North Pole, rather than the South Pole or Niceland.
- Recurring stock characters were given names and personalities.
- Here Comes Pupcake is redone in a way to fit the continuity.
- Strawberry and Huck are a couple.
- Some other couples are formed between existing characters and new characters (example: Blueberry Muffin and Cranberry Clover).
- Angel Cake is the daughter of Jesus, & the Granddaughter of God. She will frequently quote the Bible with phrases that match the current situation, whether it be good or bad. She will also have an angel form that she will obtain mid-Season 4.1.
- Because Lord Aubergine is the leader of the Porcupine Peak exile colony and not the Pie Man, taking over Planet Strawberryland and establishing a cruel regime is all Aubergine's idea.
- The Sweet Dreams Movie would be 2D animated. Other changes include a subplot in the first half, the dream sequence being real, much higher stakes, and a final battle.
- Ginger Snap's dream in One Small Step will also be real.
- Caramel and Annie own more animals in addition to cows, pigs, horses, hens, sheep, and a rooster. (They also have a bull, ducks, goats, turkeys, geese, and donkeys, because to be fair, I like when farms are more diverse with animals. Apple Pie also owns these animals)
- Since Raspberry Torte was originally considered for the original series 4th season, the team will fulfill that prophecy.
- Orange Blossom would have her hat from the start.
- When it comes to formal outfits, the tomboyish girls will wear tuxedos (this results from a vote the stagg held)
- There will be lore dumps: Strawberry Shortcake and her friends met Peppermint Fizz and any other characters that just appeared; how the kids got their season 4 designs; how the villains went bad; etc.
- The show would mark important events in the kids' lives, such as milestone birthdays, graduations, etc.
- Additional characters, episodes, songs, etc.
- Orange Blossom would be an actual lioness in Toto's Tale and Where The Gem Berries Glow.
- Peppermint Fizz would be less mean due to Cranberry Clover being a morality pet.
- Every bonus song will have an intro scene and an outro scene.
- Some episodes would have guest stars.
- The story would overall be more fleshed out, with additional lore tying each episode (as well as some of the books) together.
- There would be an actual ending (the entire gang graduates high school and Huck and Strawberry become king and queen of the planet of Strawberryland.)
