The Last Frontier is a 2020 video game based on the Ninja franchise. Taking place After the War of China, the game was announced by Outright Games during an interview on Ninja. A PlayStation 5 version was released on November 10, 2020, and versions for the Xbox Series X/S, Microsoft Windows, Stadia & Nintendo Switch were also planned at that time, released until nearly a year 2021.
Gameplay[]
The Last Frontier will take story cues from the TV Series, aiming to be just as morally ambiguous, with no heroes or villains and no black or white decisions.
Players will control a cast of 14 Squirrels throughout the game, who can live or die based on your decisions. Like many decision-making narratives, there will be multiple endings possible depending on what actions you take. There are 3 general endings to the game; Squirrels win, humans win, or peace among the two. However, there are several endings within the 3 general scenarios depending on the characters that live and die, and the general choices made throughout.
Further, the game seeks to be an even closer intersection between games and films than similar products, such as Telltale titles. It will run between 2-3 hours and the player’s only input will be entirely choice-based decisions. There are no puzzles, no exploration, nor any direct control over characters.
Plot[]
The Last Frontier is notably set around a year after Ninja and is centered around a breakaway faction of Black Walkers who previously followed Thunder renegade, Thunder King. The faction takes refuge in the Mountains from the chaotic and still ongoing Squirrel vs Dragon war. However, the Squirrels soon find themselves forced to descend into a One-owned valley as Winter approaches and food is running low.
The game follows both Squirrels with the tribe being centred around a family consisting of the tribe leader, Salli(Hanazuki and Friends: Out of This World's Cassandra Lee Morris and her Friends; Brian(Go!Animate The Movie's Brian Sharp), Silver(The Lego Movie's Elizabeth Banks), and Alan(9's Elijah Wood). The Animals are farmers living off the land in a small village where a town used to stand. They follow Salli, the wife of the former and now deceased town mayor.
Reception[]
On Metacritic, the PlayStation 5 version has a score of 100, indicating "Universal Acclaim reviews."
