On September 23, 2017, long time guest star J. K. Simmons had announced that, after 16 good years, he would be departing from the series, as he had announced to the crew privately in June. The episode "Farewell, Mr. Snipes" (1615) was made in his honor. The episode will air on May 23, 2018, although the season's holdovers will air as part of season 17.
The season started production on December 11, 2016, with the recording of "Granny" (1601a).
