The Feral Tales is a 1993 American animated adventure slapstick black comedy action film directed by Phil Nibbelink, produced by Amblin Entertainment, and distributed by Universal Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, featuring anthropomorphic animals. The film is inspired by DC League of Super-Pets and The Pet Avengers. The film was originally unrated in the United States, but for its DVD release, was later re-rated PG-13 by the MPAA for mature themes such as animal cruelty, violent imagery, and emotionally distressing scenes. The Feral Tales is the first non-family-oriented Amblin Entertainment animated film, and the first teen animated feature by the studio.

Synopsis[]

The film takes place in a world where anthropomorphic animals are capable of speech, but cannot be understood by humans. A mutt (a mix of a dog) named Dan, who escapes from Larry’s house as a puppy in San Francisco after his father is killed. In the process of telling the story, the film highlights the cruelty of performing vivisection and animal research for its own sake. He lost in San Francisco finding his young owner, Bobby Mulgrew. He took him to the Mulgrew family house living with the Mulgrew family, and brought him a kitten as his best friend, Mike. Two years later, Dan and Mike both grew up fast, then Bobby and his family brought new pets as Dan’s new friends. The next day, the Mulgrew family leaves these pets alone and moves to Los Angeles. It centers on a group of pets in San Francisco who all take part in a therapy group, led by Dan whose owner is a therapist and thus has rubbed off on him. Told from the perspective of the animals, each one having various issues that usually stem from their owners, the show details the various adventures they go on to deal with their problems. However, there are darker forces to be reckoned with... anything might happen in the forest beyond Munchen-Luncheon, because it is the enchanted domain of the worst animal-hating manchild, Larry McKruel, and the Stray Terrors!

Trivia[]

  • Dan is the true protagonist of the film, while his owner Bobby is the true deuteragonist.
  • This animated film is similar to All Dogs Go to Heaven, Oliver & Company, DC League of Super-Pets, We’re Back! A Dinosaur Story, and The Brave Little Toaster.
  • A running gag in this cartoon involves the camera going into the animals’ mouth and showing a uvula inside whenever they would scream, laugh, cry, roar, sing, yawn, or eat, most commonly with all anthropomorphic animals. In a few episodes, Expressive Uvulas were shown inside their mouths, with the camera continuing to zoom in or out when singing, laughing, or screaming in one of the episodes.
  • The Pet Crews are animal superheroes that fight off an evil animal abuser, Larry McKruel Jr.
