Plot Elements[]
- Prologue: Before the beginning of the universe, there existed only two brothers: Master Hand and Crazy Hand. For a long time, the hands spent most of their existences simply playing hanafuda cards with each other (mirroring how Nintendo started as a hanafuda card company). One day, Crazy Hand became bored and wanted to create something different, so they both used their powers to create their own universe that they would rule over: Master Hand represented order and creation, while Crazy Hand represented chaos and destruction.
- Star Fox is attacked by a mysterious spaceship; Fox and Falco are attacked, but the rest manage to escape. Fox and Falco later escape back home.
- Mario is now married to Peach and king of the Mushroom Kingdom; they are currently talking about having a baby.
- Luigi is married to Daisy and king of Sarasaland; Daisy is currently pregnant with his son.
- The Smash team is still somewhat segregated following the Civil War.
- Fox and Falco suddenly arrive at the Mushroom Kingdom after escaping and inform Mario of an impending attack. All of a sudden, Master Hand and Crazy Hand attack. Mario, Fox, and Falco subdue both Hands, but Fox claims that there is something worse coming from space.
- Mario decides to go to space to find out what it is, bringing Luigi, Toad, Bowser, Dr. Mario, Falco, Captain Olimar, Louie, Alph, Brittany, Captain Charlie, Krystal, Rosalina, Luma, Shulk, and Bowser Jr. with him; along the way, they are intercepted by Dark Samus, Sylux, Wolf, and Ridley, but they convince them to join.
- Arriving on a planet, the space team learn of their ultimate enemy: Galeem.
- Flashback: In the previous universe, Galeem was a scientist hellbent on developing a device capable of preventing an impending apocalypse that would destroy her universe; the device was a gauntlet called the Power Glove, with small components called "Controllers" that fit onto the gauntlet. By the time of its completion, the universe was at war with their corrupt government, resulting in the apocalypse that destroyed her universe and killed all life, including Galeem's husband and children; Galeem was the sole survivor. Later, the Hands were born and created a new universe. Vowing to never let another universe be destroyed again, Galeem vowed to use the Power Glove to restore the universe to 100% by sacrificing enough all living beings; however, the Controllers were scattered across the universe, leading her on a hunt across the universe to find them; this also makes her responsible for the event of the previous Smash movies, including (but not limited to) the enslavement of the hands, the corruption of Tabuu, and the manipulation of Master Core. Galeem also formed her own army.
- Donkey Kong, Link I, Samus, Yoshi I, Kirby, Fox, and Red learn of this from the Hands. Realizing that they themselves will not be enough to stop Galeem, they decide to recruit more allies (and some enemies) to join them; this mainly consists of the characters mentioned above.
- Reoccurring Moment: Galeem and her army continue searching for the final two Controllers, although Galeem spends most of her time sitting around and looking at her locket of her and her family. Also, she hardly smiles.
- Emmeryn is abducted and tortured by Galeem for the whereabouts of the final two Controllers, but Emmeryn refuses to submit and is tortured to death.
- Now the Exalt of Ylisse, Chrom gives a speech to the heroes who plan to stand up to Galeem.
- Prior to the space team's battle with Galeem, Shulk uses Manado to foresee approximately fourteen-million-six-hundred-and-five outcomes of their battle: only ONE in which the heroes win. When Mario asks to see Manado so he can see how to defeat Galeem, Shulk refuses, claiming it won't happen if anyone else knows.
- The space team confronts Galeem on a desolate planet, while Galeem's army attack Ylisse (dependent on if Marth or Chrom made the speech), where the ground heroes band together and where R.O.B. has the final Controller, thus beginning the "Battle for the Light".
- Galeem defeats the space team, but before she kills Mario, Shulk surrenders the second-to-last Controller to Galeem in exchange for Mario's life. As she leaves for the final Controller, Shulk warns Mario that "nobody can defeat a final boss on their first attempt".
- Back on the ground, the heroes have destroyed Galeem's army, but Galeem arrives and overpowers them, eventually claiming the final Controller.
- With the Power Glove complete, Galeem prepares to activate it, but Fox manages to fatally shoot her the stomach; however, Galeem taunts Fox that he "should've gone for the head" and activates the Power Glove before fleeing.
- 64% of all living beings disintegrates into golden dust particles, restoring the universe to 100%; some of the heroes of the "Battle of Light" disintegrate one by one, leaving only a few characters remaining.
- Before disintegrating, Shulk tells Mario that "there was no other way".
- Escaping to a distant planet, Galeem watches the sunrise and, while also looking at her trinket, gives a sad smile (the first she's ever given)...knowing that she has "brought light back to the universe".
- Post-Credits Scene: While being attended to back at the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach's servants begin disintegrating into golden dust particles, leaving her alone in her castle. Then a trailer is shown, announcing fourteen movies (the final three are left unknown) being announced as Stage 5.5 (the second half of Stage 5).
