Super Mario Advance 5: New Super Mario Bros is a side-scrolling 2.5D platform game released on November 18, 2012 in North America, November 30th in Europe and Oceania, and in Japan on December 8th, as a launch title for the Wii U in their respective regions.
As an enhanced remake of New Super Mario Bros., it is the fifth installment in the Super Mario Advance series, following 2003's Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3., and is the first Super Mario Advance game to be released on a home console.
Changes from the original game[]
There are many changes between Super Mario Advance 5 and the original Nintendo DS version of New Super Mario Bros. However, Super Mario Advance 5 has significantly more changes to its base game than any other Super Mario Advance game before it.
Levels/Worlds from other New Super Mario Bros games[]
- Level 6-Bowser from New Super Mario Bros 2 appears at the end of World 6, after the player has defeated Monty Tank in Level 6-Castle. However, the player needs to collect all six Snow Spirits before entering Level 6-Bowser.
- Level 1-Castle and Level 5-6 from the original New Super Mario Bros are replaced with their New Super Mario Bros 2 counterparts.
- As a result, Roy Koopa is the first boss of the game instead of Bowser.
- World 9 (from New Super Mario Bros Wii), World Mushroom, World Flower and World Star (from New Super Mario Bros 2) appear as secret worlds. They can only be accessed after the player has beaten World 8-Bowser and/or finding secret paths as Mini Mario in the fortress levels.
Cutscenes[]
The intro cutscene plays after the game boots up, followed by the game's title screen, instead of after the player has selected a new file.
In addition, there are new cutscenes that play after the player has beaten a fortress level for the first time and after the player has beaten World 6-Bowser. In the former, Toadsworth talks to Mario about collecting the the Snow Spirits. In the latter, after the player has defeated Bowser in World 6-Bowser, a Magikoopa disguised as the Princess appears, forcing Mario to trek through the game's final two worlds to rescue the real princess.
New Features[]
Same Worlds, Different Layout[]
Similar to Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, the first six worlds can be played in a non-linear order. Using the Wii U gamepad, players can select which world they wish to go to in any order they choose by tapping on the icon for said world. As a result, the secret exits to World 4 and World 7 found in World 2-Castle and World 5-Castle (when using Mini Mario) are now replaced with exits to World Mushroom and World Flower.
Kirby 64 a la Mario[]
A notable new feature introduced in this game is the ability to combine two Power Ups to create new Combo Power Ups, similarly to Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards' option to combine Copy Abilities (ex. the Super Leaf and Star create the Invincibility Leaf). All the player has to do is press up on the analog stick to expel Mario's current Power-Up from his body. Mario will then carry the Power-Up over his head. If the player taps right on the analog stick, Mario will throw the Power Up. If Mario throws the Power Up at another Power-Up, it will fuse and form a Combo Power-Up.
Keep in mind that only a select number of Power-Ups are compatible for fusion; the player cannot combine just any two Power-Ups and expect a combo to come out of it. Luckily, there is a sign post in World 1's map that explains what Power-Ups can be combined and what Power-Ups cannot.
Three (gameplay modes) is a magic number[]
In addition, Mario and Luigi both have their own gameplay modes. Mario Mode is where players control exclusively as Mario. Mario controls similarly to how he did in the original New Super Mario Bros. Mario can collect a variety of Power Ups that change his appearance and give him new abilities.
Luigi Mode is an alternative to Mario Mode, in which players control Luigi. However, Luigi controls differently than Mario. Luigi has his own version of the triple jump known as the Luigi Twirl Jump, which allows Luigi to propel upwards in the air similarly to the Propeller Mushroom after the second jump. In addition, when Luigi wears the Propeller Mushroom suit, he can do Luigi Twirl and then activate the Propeller Mushroom ability to propel upwards even higher.
Lastly, the Statue Mode is where Mario or Luigi is chased by the Koopalings, who will follow the player and attempt to turn them into stone. The time limit is also much shorter than in the previous modes. Shell Mario and Tanooki Mario are immune to the Koopalings' abillity to turn Mario into stone.
Plot[]
The story of Super Mario Advance 5: New Super Mario Bros is relatively the same as the original, but it is significantly expanded upon with the addition of new cutscenes.
In the opening cutscene, Mario and Princess Peach are taking a walk through the Mushroom Kingdom, when suddenly a storm cloud strikes lightning onto Peach's castle. Mario runs to investigate, whilst Peach stays behind, only to be kidnapped by an unsuspecting Bowser Junior. As usual, Mario must rescue the Princess from the clutches of Bowser and his son.
Along the way, Mario meets Toadsworth, who tells Mario that the Princess is being held in Bowser's Castle, but the path to said castle is blocked by giant ice cubes, preventing him from entering. However. Toadsworth explains that the six Snow Spirits could help Mario if he rescues them in the fortresses.
Mario explores through grasslands, deserts, beaches, forests, ice, and mountains to get the Snow Spirits from Bowser's minions. Afterwards, Mario finally gains access to Bowser's castle. Mario is ready for another showdown with Bowser, but this time the Koopalings show up in the nick of time to make Bowser giant-sized. Fortunately, the spell eventually backfires and the Snow Spirits use their combined magic to change Bowser into a pile of bones.
Mario is now able to free the Princess. To Mario's shock, the Princess is not actually the Princess, but a Magikoopa in disguise. Now, realizing he had been fooled, Mario sets out to find the real Princess and take down Bowser a third (and final) time.
Mario makes it through a sky world, and meets Lakithunder, who was responsible for creating the storm cloud that struck lightning over Peach's castle. After taking down Lakithunder, Mario finds himself in a lava world, where he sees Bowser's second castle, where the real Princess is being kept, in the distance. In one of the fortresses, Mario is forced to fight Bowser's skeletal remains, which have magically assembled to form Dry Bowser. Mario takes out the undead Koopa king and soon gains access to Bowser's second and final castle.
Once inside, Mario is greeted by not only Bowser Junior, but also Dry Bowser. Mario is ready for the final showdown, but Bowser Junior throws his father's remains into a cauldron filled with magic. Bowser emerges from the cauldron now stronger and more evil than before. Mario must now fight both the Koopa king and the Koopa prince in order to save the Princess.
Once the battle is over, the Princess (the real one, this time), floats down to thank Mario for rescuing her. Mario even receives a well-earned kiss on the cheek.
