Steven Universe: The Movie, or simply known as "The Steven Universe Movie: Protectors of the Earth", is an upcoming 2019 American traditionally animated musical action-adventure-comedy-drama film based on the Cartoon Network television animated series created by Rebecca Sugar, Steven Universe. It stars Zach Callison, Estelle, Michaela Dietz and Deedee Magno-Hall. The events of the film takes place during the fifth season of the show and it will be first released in theaters on September 2, 2019 in the United States, produced by Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios and distributed by Warner Bros.


The Gem Homeworld, led by Yellow Diamond, finally returns to Earth in an attempt turn it into a Gem colony for a second time, led by Steven Universe, the Crystal Gems fight back to protect the planet and all of its life once and for all to stay alive for another day.


The movie starts on the Gem Homeworld with the Great Diamond Authority plotting to attack and colonize Earth and destroy the Crystal Gems, now knowing of their presence from Jasper, who ultimately betrays the Diamonds and escapes to Earth, followed by a massive fleet of ships along with the three Diamonds.

On Earth, Steven and the Crystal Gems are fighting off another corrupted gem, after the Crystal Gems are injured, Peridot and Lapis Lazuli fuse forming Esperite and "poof" the corrupted gem. Steven is proud of Peridot for fusing for her first time, however, he is cut off when Garnet notices a spaceship from the Gem Homeworld coming towards the Crystal Temple. Steven, along with the help of Connie and his father evacuate Beach City, Steven stays at Beach City despite pleading from his friends, he dismisses them and promises that he will be fine. The spaceship crash-lands in the ocean, Jasper emerges and moves towards the Crystal Gems, who summon their weapons in preparation for a battle. Jasper promises that she does not want to fight, and that she had betrayed the Diamonds and the Gem Homeworld, she then plays a replay of the scene from her Gemstone proving it to the Crystal Gems. Jasper also mentions that Homeworld is coming after her to colonize Earth and destroy the Crystal Gems.

In the post credit scene, red diamond is plotting her revenge on the crystal gems for homeworld.

Theatrical release

The movie is set to release in Canada on September 2, 2019. The film's theatrical release will be preceded by Looped In Time, a short film based on Cartoon Network's upcoming animated series Infinity Train, created by former Regular Show writer/storyboard artist Owen Dennis.

Home media release

The film was released on Digital on May 7 and Blu-Ray and DVD on May 28, 2019. It contains the deleted scenes, an Infinity Train short film Looped In Time, the 18-minute featurette, behind-the-scenes of Steven Universe: The Movie, featuring interviews with most of the principal cast and crew, animatics, the pilot episode, the audio commentaries and the sneak peek of Adventure Time: The Hero of Ooo and OK K.O.: Let's Save Universe.

Television premiere

The film will premiere on Cartoon Network in Fall 2019.


  • Garnet is the true protagonist in the film because she had bigger plans than Steven and knew the Gems personally.
