Critical response[]
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 53% (5.72/10) based on 12 reviews. The site's critical consensus reads: "The script is somewhat clever and the characters are still as fresh as their cartoon counterparts, but it can't hide the fact that it's a complete ripoff of Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet." On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 60 out of 100, indicating "mixed or average reviews".
Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a mixed review, saying, "It has its fun moments, but with a so-so story and an outdated tone, Spongebob, We Shrunk Ourselves And Then Broke The Internet will certainly entertain the kids, but parents will often feel as if the film is ho-hum overall." Robert Abele of TheWrap gave a positive review of the film, saying: "It has minor quirks, but, most of the time, Spongebob, We Shrunk Ourselves And Then Broke The Internet is low-stake fun for everyone." Stephen Whitty gave the film one out of five stars, saying "Boring, dull, and hard to enjoy, there is little to nothing of quality coming from Spongebob, We Shrunk Ourselves And Then Broke The Internet."
