~ Taglines

Sonic and Marvel Superheroes: Multiverse Speedstorm is a kart racing video game of the superhero genre developed by Sumo Digital and published by Sega, Marvel Entertainment and Disney Interactive for PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It is a crossover between the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and the Marvel Universe, and a sequel to Marvel Superhero Adventures: Intergalactic Grand Prix and Team Sonic Racing as well as the Netflix animated series Sonic Prime.

Gameplay

Most of the gameplay is the same as in Intergalactic Grand Prix, but added with elements of Team Sonic Racing. Players can now personalize the karts, choosing the vehicle types, wheels, and weapon accessories.

Each character also has an array of special abilities which can be used for the race, such as Spider-Man using his webs to paralyze or grapple the opponents, Captain America attacking with his shield, Sonic using his rings and speed skills, etc. Characters can also perform a Speedstorm Special, which allows them to achieve an unstoppable speed boost, emitting a concussive wave of energy around them which causes damage to nearing opponents. Each Speedstorm Special also has a different capability depending on the character's size type:

  • Small: racers will shrink nearing opponents into small sizes, rendering them vulnerable to bigger hazards.
  • Acrobatic Medium: racers will stun nearing opponents with electromagnetic waves of Chaos energy emitted from their karts. Stricken opponents will lose their items when hit.
  • Heavy Medium: missiles will be launched on the track, damaging the summoner's opponents.
  • Large: racers will summon elemental pillars in the ground to slow the opponents down.

Items and Power-Ups

  • Rings - can be collected in the tracks, and used to increase and fill up the Speedstorm Special matter. Outside of the game, Rings are also useful to purchase and unlock new content, including new costumes/skins, new components and upgrades for the karts, etc. Rings can also be earned through the player's racing performance, including stunts, knockouts, and finishing position.
  • Dash Panels - driving over the panels will give the racers an extra boost.
  • Celestial Heart Gates - driving over the gates will restore the karts' health matter.
  • Power-Ups: the power-ups are shaped as giant rings with S.H.I.E.L.D. logos in them, as well as item boxes. The power-up obtained will be randomly selected:
    • Stark Beetle Drones: two drones which shoot at nearby racers at player's will. The shoots are controlled manually, with an ammo of 50 (25 for each drone).
    • Target Lock: Allows the player to execute the character's special moves.
      • Target Lock ×2: Allows the player to execute the moves twice.
      • Target Lock ×3: Allows the player to execute the moves three times.
    • Wisps: as in Team Sonic Racing, the Wisps will also be used as power-ups and item weapons. Each color has a unique effect, depending on its power:
      • White Wisp: gives the user an instant boost in speed, akin to the Boost. The player is able to obtain and hold up to three White Wisps at once. Using multiple White Wisps will use a more powerful boost, but mainly if used in succession to properly carry momentum from each prior one unleashed. Using a White wisp just before being hit with a projectile will destroy the projectile.
      • Orange Wisp: allows racers to shoot at their opponents with rocket missiles. Like for the White Wisps, the player is able to obtain and hold up to three Orange Wisps at once.
      • Crimson Wisp: one of the pursuer items. It flies towards the racer at the lead position, and blasts them.
      • Jade Wisp: allows racers to become intangible, making them invulnerable to opponents' attacks and track hazards for a short period of time.
    • Speedstorm Token - a token with the image of the Infinity Stones in one side, and the Chaos Emeralds in the other side. It is useful to fill up the Speedstorm Special gauge into 100%.

Game Modes

  • Test Drive: Taking place in a facility established by Kamala Khan and Miles "Tails" Prower, this level serves as the Training Tutorial level for the game. It is also played in Story Mode.
  • Racing Tracks: the Game Modes in Racing Tracks consist of:
    • Normal Race: Players can select any track of their choosing to play. The maximum number of racers on a track at any one time is between eight, ten or twelve. It can also be played in Local and Online Multiplayer Mode. There are also two Normal Racing Modes: on Individual (where players race against each other individually) or on Team (where players compete while split between two, three, four, five or six teams, similarly to Team Sonic Racing. The numbers of team members also vary between two and six.)
    • Time Trial: The Time Trials vary depending on which game mode is chosen: in Normal Race trials, player vies for the fastest lap. The best time is then saved as a ghost, which the player can race against in later trials. In Story Mode, player must complete a lap within a time limit.
    • Blipped Out: In each 15 seconds, the racer in the last position will be eliminated from the race. Last racer who remains wins.
  • Battle Arenas: Up to four or twelve racers fight customized battles, launching weapons during combat in one of the special battle arenas. Like the Normal Races, the Battle Arenas can be played in Individual mode or Team mode, and can also be played in Local and/or Online Multiplayer Mode. The battle modes consist of:
    • Knockout Battle: Racers battle each other to survive until the last one stands. Each racer can respawn after being defeated in battle, but will be eliminated from the battle when he/she loses all three or five lives.
    • Spoils of War: Racers battle to collect as many Stark Coins as they can within a time limit. One player/team will win by collecting most coins.
    • Minion Mayhem: Racers battle to destroy as many enemies as they can within a time limit. One player/team will win by destroying most enemies, which can be destroyed with Power-ups, or by ramming them.
    • Survival of the Fittest: Racers battle each other and score within the time limit. Player with the highest score wins.
  • Grand Prix: Players compete in a racing cup with a number of tracks for the Bronze, Silver, and Golden trophy. It can also be played in Local Multiplayer Mode. There are two different types of racing cups:
    • Normal Cup: Players compete in one of the six racing cups with each consisting of six tracks.
    • Multiversal Cup: Unlocked after clearing Story Mode. Players compete in all racing cups and tracks.
  • Story Mode: Player participates the game's main storyline, and completes missions and races to progress and unlock new tracks, characters and vehicles in six chapters. In each chapter, player explores a hub area on foot, while participating races and battle arenas associated with a Grand Prix Cup. Story Mode also supports two players for cooperative activities. There are also two game modes/missions which are exclusive to Story Mode:
    • Rival Race: Taking place in racing track events, the Rival Races will pit player against an individual playable character who must be defeated in a race to succeed.
    • Boss Battle: The Boss Battles take place in both racing tracks and battle arenas, and will pit player against a non-playable villain whom player must eliminate. Also on this mode, racers can only respawn five times when defeated by the bosses, and will fail the mission if they are defeated a sixth time.
  • Multiplayer Mode: It has two modes: Local, which can be played with 2, 3 or 4 players in the same console with a split screen, and does not require internet access, and Online, which can be played with 12 players connected to internet in individual consoles.

Story

Premise

Following the events of Marvel Superhero Adventures: Intergalactic Grand Prix and Sonic Prime, superheroes continue their usual activities after winning the Intergalactic Grand Prix, whereas Spider-Man and his friends discover that the Infinity Stones are linked to the Paradox Prism, leading to a multiversal encounter with Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends, as the Grandmaster and Dodon Pa host a new racing event called the Multiversal Grand Prix. The two factions also embark in a new adventure across the Multiverse, and a battle against their old enemies, as well as a new threat to both universes.
