Sonic X Skylanders 2: Quest for the Emerald is the second film in the Sonic X Skylanders franchise. It is the sequel to the Sonic X Skylanders Academy Season 1 series and Sonic X Skylanders: Gotta Go Fast.

Synopsis[]

Taking place after the Season 1 finale episode Assault on Skylander Academy, the film follows Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Eruptor and Stealth Elf, who have become heroes after graduating the academy and defeating Sonic's arch-nemesis, Dr. Krankcase in the first film and in Season 1, but soon learn about the doctor's return with the help from a super-strong red echidna warrior named Knuckles the Echidna, and teams up with their new ally, Miles "Tails" Prower, a two-tailed yellow fox who can hover in mid-air by using his twin tails, to figure out the origin of Spyro's mysterious affliction that he gained during the Season finale and to stop Knuckles and Krankcase from getting their hands on the Master Emerald, a powerful green gem that can turn people's thoughts into a reality, for their purpose to bring catastrophe into the world.

Plot[]

On the Mushroom Planet, dawn breaks. As a mushroom rises up in the sunshine, it sets off a mushroom-based, Rube Goldberg-esque mechanism that ends with a mushroom figurine of Sonic, along with other mushrooms, getting squeezed of their juices, which pour into a mushroom cup. Dr. Krankcase then shows up, picking up the cup as he documents his log of how he has been marooned on this planet for 243 days (which is about eight months) because of Sonic and his friends (Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor), who defeated and banished him to that planet at the end of the first film, but he has managed to survive because of a breathable atmosphere and his own intellect (though his efforts to get something tasty from the mushrooms and fungi have all met with repeated, dismal, disgusting failure). Despite this, Dr. Krankcase sees a reason to be optimistic, as he has formulated a plan to get back to Skylands and get revenge on Sonic and his friends. Having salvaged components from his Eggpod, Dr. Krankcase has constructed a beacon; he makes his final preparations, getting ready to hook Sonic's chaos energy-infused quill up to his masterpiece and see who will come to investigate his signal. However, the moment Dr. Krankcase connects the quill, an energy pulse flings him from the beacon and knocks him out, with the pulse extending far into space.

After nightfall, Dr. Krankcase remains unconscious as a Ring portal appears, with a trio of alien scavengers stepping out of it and slowly approaching him. As one of them reaches for the quill in Dr. Krankcase's hand to take it from him, Dr. Krankcase comes to, proceeding to activate different traps that he has set up and easily dispatching the scavengers. With the opposition gone, Dr. Krankcase runs toward the Ring portal, only for him to come to a halt as he sees an anthropomorphic red echidna appear from the other side. As he approaches Dr. Krankcase, he aggressively asks where he acquired Sonic's quill, to which Dr. Robotnik explains that he got it from Sonic on Skylands and that he will be happy to show him the way.

In Skylands, at Iron Jaw Gulch, the peacefulness of an average night in the city is disrupted when some bank robbers in a hijacked armored flying-truck come driving through the streets with the police hot on their tail. As the bank robbers throw pipe bombs at the local police, the heroes (Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf, Eruptor, Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz) are shown standing on a building as they make some preparations before going after the truck. Jumping into the truck, the ground team (Sonic, Stealth Elf, Eruptor and Pop Fizz) knock out one of the robbers and push the other out of the truck before Eruptor takes the wheel himself. He proceeds to drive a bit clumsily, causing the robbers in the back of the truck to drop their pipe bombs on the streets as they get knocked out. Meanwhile, the air team (Spyro, Scratch and Jet-Vac) tail the truck from the air to get the money that flies out of the truck and to serve as the the ground team's scouts. Back inside, Stealth Elf (donned in a full black ninja-yoroi with a head piece and a black version of her skirt, boots, buckles and gloves) ungags a male captive onboard the truck, the security guard assigned to guard the money, who asks who she and her friends are. Eruptor tries introducing himself and his friends as superheroes, but loses focus as he drives until Sonic helps Eruptor drive by taking the wheel. To make matters worse, Eruptor's driving sets off the remainder of the robbers' pipe bombs. Stealth Elf questions why Sonic and Eruptor aren't slowing down, to which the lava monster reveals that he and the hedgehog can't reach the brakes, which are blocked by an unconscious robber. Regardless of the captive's statements, Eruptor insists that heroes can handle this without help of the police, and so, he throws the pipe bombs to Scratch, who, despite being annoyed at Eruptor for not wanting the police to get involved, catches them and tosses them high into the air before setting them off with a laser beam from her more extravagant-styled mask; causing the bombs to explode in a fireworks-like display. However, the captive can still hear an ignited bomb. As Stealth Elf takes the wheel so Sonic and Pop Fizz can look for the bomb without the risk of being endangered by Eruptor's driving, the captive criticizes his and his friends' performance, before he then notices that the bomb is stuck in Sonic's back quills. Grabbing it, Sonic throws the bomb to Spyro so he can destroy it, but the purple dragon flinches with purple electric sparks just as he is about to grab the bomb and it rolls into a storm drain on the side of the road, to which Spyro apologizes for when his friends yell at him. Not long after, Stealth Elf and Scratch notice that the truck is heading for a public ice cream stand. Spotting some power tools in the truck, Sonic uses them to take it apart at super speed as the air team flies off and Stealth Elf takes Eruptor and Pop Fizz out of the truck by using her teleportation ability, leaving only its undercarriage to slide to a halt right in front of the ice cream stand, much to the shock of a young boy standing in its path. As the people recover from their stupor, the pipe bomb Spyro didn't catch threw in the storm drain goes off as opposed to Pop Fizz's earlier belief that the bomb would go out once it hits the water, resulting in several water spouts emerging from the manholes. Meanwhile, the robbers recover as the Iron Jaw Gulch Police Department appears to arrest them. Standing on top of a building, Sonic declares loudly that no thanks are needed for the Skylanders. While the captive calls them "strange heroes", they do not mind as they leave through the destruction they have accidentally caused.

Heading back to Skylanders Academy at dawn, Sonic greets Snap Shot at the speed trap behind the welcome billboard before he, Scratch, Spyro, Stealth Elf and Eruptor hurry up to a mountaintop and greeting the academy from afar as Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz head to the school itself. The group of five then head back to their team house and enter their respective rooms to catch up on their missing sleep last night. However, while entering his room, Sonic notices that he has some dirty banknotes stuck to his shoes after the events in Iron Jaw Gulch. As he puts them away in a drawer to avoid raising suspicion, Sonic takes a look at the map of safe worlds that Longclaw gave him, with a feather from Longclaw falling out of it. Reminiscing on Longclaw, Sonic tells her that he misses her and that he is trying to make her proud. At the same time, Scratch heads to her photo of her younger self and her father; Scar, greeting him and stating that she is doing her best to live up to his legacy as a future Feathercat Warrior before heading to bed. Back in Sonic's room, after putting the map and feather away in his pouch, Sonic attempts to get some sleep, but then Cotton (Spyro's pet sheep) and Hugo come in, with Hugo reminding him that he, Spyro and Scratch are supposed to meet Eon. With Cotton forcing him out of bed, Sonic has no other choice but to get up and grab the feathercat and purple dragon.

Later, Sonic, Scratch, Spyro and Eon are out fishing on a lake. As Eon tries to have a nice conversation with Sonic and the others, he notices that Spyro has fallen asleep while Eon and the others weren't paying attention. Soon after, Spyro falls into the water as the boat tilts and gravity does the rest with Sonic soon joining in. With Sonic unable to swim despite holding onto Spyro, Scratch and Eon pull them back into the boat. As the two help Sonic and Spyro dry off and warm up, however, Eon points out that he discovered Spyro's seizure after having a talk with Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz when they came to tell Eon about their mission's status. Eon then shows the trio a newspaper documenting the mayhem that they accidentally created in Iron Jaw Gulch and asks Spyro how many times they are going to have this discussion about the purple dragon refusing to go to a doctor to overview these mysterious seizures that have started since the day Kaos, Glumshanks, Kaossandra and the Doom Raiders have raided the academy. Spyro tries to brush it off as his powers having problems but Sonic and Scratch say otherwise as the seizures have also been impacting their and their friends' everyday lives from Eruptor cooking breakfast to attending occasional classes at the academy. Eon calls him out for being irresponsible and reckless, but Spyro insists that he is fine as he thinks the seizures are from stress and that the city was already getting messed up from the robbery. Scratch, however, remarks that heroes don't put others in danger with their actions as Sonic agrees with her, to which Spyro asks the two to be his friends and not his siblings. He tries to insist that he can take care of himself, but Scratch tells him that being a hero is about taking responsibility for other people and that she, Spyro and Sonic still have some growing up to do before they can be the heroes that they all truly want to be. Eon also adds that a moment will come where his powers are needed, but the moment will choose them, not the other way around. Spyro is surprised by Scratch and Eon's insight, and Sonic explains it is a "family special" that he and Scratch got in the lake they are on from Scar, who always tried to steer him and his sister in the right direction, the same thing they and Eon have trying to do with him, Stealth Elf and Eruptor. This convinces Spyro to agree to being more responsible until his moment arrives and finally take Eon's recommendation of seeing a doctor. The four then high-five, and Sonic celebrates by using his speed to push their boat across the lake at high speed, much to Eon's dismay but Spyro and Scratch's exhilaration.

Soon, at the local hospital, the doctor finishes her examination, but states that she is unable to find the source of Spyro's seizures but theorizes that they may be coming from a hidden power Spyro has possibly had since his birth and advises him to take it easy for now while waiting for the day the powers to come naturally. At the same time, a school break arrives and a majority of the staff and cadets leave for their vacation, giving Spyro the chance to rest and recover like the doctor asked him to.

Back at the team house, Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz are preparing to head to Fantasm Forest for the wedding of Stormblade (an ace stunt lark pilot and Jet-Vac's niece). As they enter their living room, they find Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf, Eruptor and Cotton playing the roles of flight attendants in front of a Ring portal leading to the Sky Baron and gremlin's destination. After giving Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz their send-off, Jet-Vac asks for a hug, but Sonic declines, seeing as he, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor are going to be spending time at the academy during their break and are therefore too mature for it. At Pop Fizz's suggestion, they power-bump instead. Sonic then gives Jet-Vac a Ring that they can use to go home with, and the two bid Sonic and his friends goodbye as the portal closes. Once they are gone, though, Sonic is determined to have fun with his friends and sister for the next two days and three weeks while they all have the opportunity. Scratch and the boys proceed to party it up, leaving the house in a mess along the way but Stealth Elf occasionally convinces the group to clean up before moving on to making another mess as she also joins in on the fun.

Meanwhile, somewhere far away at a cliffside, Tails appears from a Ring portal. Consulting his Miles Electric, Tails proclaims that he has found "him" through the device's readings and hurries out to find that person before it is too late, taking flight with his twin-tails as he heads towards the academy and its nearby town. As night falls in Skylands, Tails arrives in town and decides to use a plane or a flying car to get around without being spotted, choosing Snap Shot's flying police cruiser for the job.

Meanwhile, Sonic and his friends are chilling when Stealth Elf notices that Jet-Vac is calling her on her phone via FaceTime. Cleaning up the house in a flash to avoid raising suspicion, Sonic allows Stealth Elf to answer Jet-Vac's call. While everyone acts casual, Jet-Vac knows Sonic, Scratch and Spyro are up to something. Regardless, Spyro convinces him to just relax and enjoy his vacation, with the Sky Baron assured that Sonic and Stealth Elf are fast enough to clean up any mess in good time (Sonic agrees, but "corrects" himself and acts offended at the accusation when Scratch slaps him with her wing to make him realize the meaning of Jet-Vac's words). After having a brief chat about Stormblade's fiancé, flame spirit race car driver Spitfire, Jet-Vac decides to introduce himself and hangs up on his friends after encouraging them to stay out of trouble. Back at the house, before the Sky Baron hangs up, Spyro soon chases after a wet and sud-covered Cotton as she is not finished with her bath.

When Jet-Vac tries to greet Spitfire, however, he tells him with hostility that he should tear the Sky Baron apart for not spending time with the his niece. However, Spitfire quickly drops the façade and tells Jet-Vac that he is just kidding. The two proceed to talk about how Stormblade has been wishing for Jet-Vac to spend more time with her, with Spitfire encouraging Jet-Vac to work things out with her. Stormblade and Pop Fizz come over, with the lark seemingly happy about her uncle's presence and insisting that they bury the hatchet. As they hug it out, however, Stormblade quietly tells Jet-Vac that she will give Jet-Vac a world of hurt if he screws up her wedding, showing that she is still somewhat cross over her uncle not spending as much time with her as she wished and leaving Jet-Vac dreading of what's to come if he gets on his niece's bad side.

Back at the academy, Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor are watching TV with Cotton in the team house when a blackout suddenly hits with the only known light sources being from Eruptor's lava, the crystals on Scratch's armor and the crystal on Spyro's collar. Although thrilled at first, Sonic notices something is wrong when the TV turns on by itself and the lights start to flicker, making him and his friends uneasy. As they nervously head for the front door to investigate, the doorknob gets cut off, leaving the door to open and reveal Dr. Krankcase. Everyone is initially shocked by this development, but Sonic steels himself and tells Dr. Krankcase that while he is not sure how he returned, he still made a big mistake coming here. Dr. Krankcase, however, retorts back and threatens to have his revenge on him and the Skylanders (Cotton included). Infuriated by these declarations, Sonic jumps at Dr. Krankcase, intent on hitting him with a chaos energy-charged punch, only for the doctor to playfully step aside and reveal the same echidna from the beginning, who punches Sonic through a wall and the TV, prompting the others to rush to his aid. As Dr. Krankcase introduces the echidna as Knuckles, who is a powerful warrior who is the last of his tribe, Sonic picks up his Ring pouch and tries charging at Knuckles, only to get punched through another wall and into the backyard by the echidna, who demands to know where "it" is. Taking it as a challenge, Sonic charges at Knuckles again with a spin attack, only for Knuckles—who has deemed the hedgehog an inexperienced and "unworthy" foe—to stop it with one hand and knock Sonic down, much to Spyro and his friends' shock as it is considered that Sonic's spin attack is the hedgehog's strongest attack. As he pins Sonic against a tree, Knuckles proclaims his intended destiny to restore the "ultimate power" to the home of his people. While Sonic insists that he has no idea of what he is talking about, Dr. Krankcase, who has been watching the fight from the sidelines along with the other heroes, takes an interest in Knuckles' mentioning of "ultimate power." After labeling Sonic as an "apprentice of Longclaw", Knuckles proceeds to elaborate that her people and his people, the echidnas, were sworn enemies, and that he will now kill Sonic for being an associate of the opposing side. However, Stealth Elf and Eruptor battle Knuckles to protect Sonic but they are defeated once Knuckles uses his chaos energy to gain the upper hand. Scratch also has a go and does a better job than the others but she is defeated once Knuckles grabs her tail and slams her on the ground repeatedly. Spyro also has a turn and is defeated, but while being choked by the echidna, the same purple sparks from the dragon's seizures appear and reach Knuckles' chaos energy. Shocked at this, Knuckles recognizes the sparks as chaos energy but is shocked that a resident from Skylands of all creatures has chaos energy as it is not common in the area and demands to know how Spyro acquired it, but the dragon is too shocked to reply as Knuckles is referring to the same energy that Sonic and the echidna have.

Suddenly, though, Tails appears in Snap Shot's police cruiser, with the emergency lights blazing, which he rams Knuckles with, much to Dr. Krankcase's surprise and confusion. With Tails saying he is on Skylanders' side and Knuckles recovering, Sonic and his friends jump into Tails' car, which Tails uses his gadgets to drive. After shaking off Dr. Krankcase when he jumps onto the hood, the two drive away, with Knuckles hot on their heels. After Tails has introduced himself, Sonic, Scratch and Eruptor demand an explanation for everything. Tails proceeds to tell the group about Knuckles, who is the last of the echidnas and the most dangerous warrior in the galaxy and obsessed with finding the Master Emerald. Spyro dismisses the Emerald as a bedtime story that Sonic had been told about from Longclaw and the hedgehog soon told Scratch and the dragon himself when they were kids, but Tails tells him that Knuckles believes otherwise and that Sonic is the key to its discovery. As Stealth Elf takes the wheel, Knuckles quickly catches up to them and begins tearing the car apart. Tails, however, has them drive over a cliff. To everyone's surprise, Tails is able to haul himself and Sonic to safety by using his twin-tails as helicopter blades as Scratch carries Eruptor and Spyro air-lifts Stealth Elf. Meanwhile, Knuckles manages to get off the car and latch onto the cliff, leaving the car to explode when it hits the ground of an empty isle below, causing it to be totally demolished.

As the heroes fly away, Dr. Krankcase catches up in a riding lawn mower and watches. In order to proceed with his plans, Dr. Krankcase uses his Krankcase Control Glove to contact Hood Sickle, who has become the owner of the Mean Bean Coffee Café in Green Hills after Dr. Krankcase's disappearance. As Hood Sickle wonders where Dr. Krankcase is, he gets his message on his smartwatch. Closing the café and making it look like it failed a health inspection to avoid prying eyes, Hood Sickle uses the shop's advanced systems to send a pod located in orbit to Dr. Krankcase, all while joyfully proclaiming his boss' return. Following his pod's arrival, Dr. Krankcase arms himself with new clothes, a tune-up, equipment and Badniks.

Meanwhile, Knuckles is climbing up the cliff until Dr. Krankcase intrudes from above, asking him about the Master Emerald. Knuckles insists that it does not concern him and that their deal is over now that he has gotten him off the Mushroom Planet. In response, Dr. Krankcase helps Knuckles back up with his Badniks and insists that he needs him to navigate Earth. Furthermore, Dr. Krankcase offers to help him find the Master Emerald, which Knuckles can then use to destroy Sonic and his friends; the Skylanders. With Knuckles seeing that Dr. Krankcase is suggesting an alliance, the two shake hands on the deal, with Knuckles crushing Dr. Krankcase's hand due to his own brute strength. With Knuckles convinced of his commitment, Dr. Krankcase calls in his Egg Mobile from the pod and the two use it to set off.

Meanwhile, Sonic and his friends have gone to Snap Shot at Cloudcraker Prison for help, but are unable to keep the fate of his cruiser a secret. As they get acquainted with Snap Shot's office, Sonic and the others try to figure out what Knuckles meant about Spyro having chaos energy. Tails then performs a chaos energy sensing procedure with his Miles Electric and a heart monitor that Snap Shot wheels in where it revealed that Spyro has been born with a massive amount of chaos energy in his body after getting exposed to it when he was an egg but he is unable to harness it yet, making Spyro realize that this is power that the doctor was referring to. More examinations reveal that the egg was very sick after catching an unspecified illness and Spyro would have been unable to make it if he wasn't exposed to chaos energy, which soon ensured a safe birth while simultaneously gifting the unborn dragon chaos energy. With one mystery solved, they move onto figuring out why Knuckles thinks Sonic is the key finding the Master Emerald. When Tails hypothesizes a connection, Sonic recalls that Longclaw's map has the image of an emerald on it, which he was previously unable to figure out. After Sonic pulls the map from his pouch, it starts to glow after Stealth Elf tries to read it. He drops it and a magical projection of Longclaw appears to deliver a message to Sonic, saying that it was made in case something happened to her. She also reveals that Skylands was chosen as Sonic's new home planet for a reason, as it is the secret hiding place of the Master Emerald, an ancient emerald that can grant its user the power to turn thoughts into reality and threaten all life in the universe, should it fall into the wrong hands. She passes her duty of watching the Emerald over to Sonic, who sees this as his and his friends' moment. Longclaw then tells Sonic to follow the map to the Emerald and keep it safe before ending her message with her recognition of Sonic's special heart and a loving goodbye, leaving Sonic both saddened and determined not to let her down, prompting Scratch to comfort him with a small hug. Following an strange remark from Snap Shot's remark that if he had the emerald; he could increase security at the prison, Sonic sees that the map has changed to show that there is a compass in the Frostfest Mountains that will lead to the Master Emerald. Eruptor then adds that with Knuckles also in Skylands, it will be a race for the Emerald. After Snap Shot warns the group that Knuckles may not show mercy since he is a warrior, Sonic voices his certainty that despite these odds, he, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf, Eruptor and Tails will find the compass first, opening a Ring portal to the Frostfest Mountains. Tails, however, is hesitant to come along, insisting that he only came to Skylands to warn Sonic and his friends and is not a "field guy". Sonic, however, convinces Tails to come along by promising that he and his friends will protect him, a promise of which they seal with a power-bump. While entering the mountains, Sonic asks of what Spyro and his friends thought of Longclaw since they finally got to see what she really looks like, to which Scratch and Spyro call the owl lovely as Stealth Elf states her respect about the owl's compassion and bravery, calling her a true fighter, with Eruptor being impressed at Longclaw's intelligence to hide power artifacts off her home planet so no enemies could find them. Overall, Spyro and his friends state their respect for Longclaw.

Back in the Mean Bean Coffee Café, Hood Sickle, now wearing his outfit from his original service to Dr. Krankcase, has prepared a latte for his boss, who soon after arrives in the café. While Hood Sickle is surprised by Dr. Krankcase's different appearance, he nonetheless expresses his loyalty with Dr. Krankcase's favorite latte. Tasting it, Dr. Krankcase notes that it could use some mushroom, referencing his dismal attempts with the fungi back on the Mushroom Planet. Knuckles arrives and takes offense to Hood Sickle when he calls him a porcupine. Regardless, Hood Sickle welcomes him upon hearing of his pride in his heritage and his resolve to fulfill his goal, which they mark with a handshake that crushes Hood Sickle's hand. Dr. Krankcase decides that they should renovate the café, and Hood Sickle transforms it into their high-tech headquarters with a simple code phrase (which is Dr. Krankcase's aforementioned favorite latte).

In Fantasm Forest, Jet-Vac is having a rough volleyball match against Spitfire and his team. Despite this, the two of them remain on good terms. As they get talking, Spitfire notes that his team is more than that: they are his life-long squad. Afterward, the two of them promise to hang out some more with extreme activities, although Jet-Vac regrets it after he leaves. He then meets Pop Fizz and Stormblade's daughter; Misty, with Pop Fizz revealing his duty as the ring-bearer for Stormblade's wedding while Misty is the flower girl. At first, it seems that Pop Fizz has lost one of the rings, but Jet-Vac soon reveals that he is just playing with the gremlin by giving him back the lost wedding ring to amuse his great-niece. As Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz get reacquainted while Misty leaves, Jet-Vac looks at Spitfire's team and wishes that Sonic had friends that are more like him and not other creatures such as elves and dragons. Pop Fizz, however, tells him to relax and not worry about Sonic, certain that he and his friends will find his way.

Meanwhile, in the Frostfest Mountains, Sonic's group is caught in a snowstorm, with Sonic ranting about how they can't find their way and Spyro stating his annoyance that the mountains were chosen as the compass's location as Stealth Elf declares her annoyance that the group should've check the forecast before entering the snowy lands. Unable to get a reading on the compass in this storm, Tails suggests turning back. Scratch, however, spots a village nearby and says that they should take shelter in there. Tails and Eruptor are worried, but Scratch assures them that the locals of the mountains; the Yeti, are very welcoming as she was told of this information by her late father. Putting on some disguises made from winter clothing near the entrance, Sonic and Tails enter the village with Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor as they get a warm reception from the villagers as they are having a festival at the time. After Scratch speaks with Fizzy, the head of the village, to be allowed to stay in the village until the storm clears, they get a table and a hotel room as Scratch orders some bowls of beef stew; to which Tails is grateful for as he was about to use his faulty translator to order the food, where Sonic inquires Tails about his gadgets. Tails reveals that he made them himself, much to the amazement of Spyro as Tails is a young child, and remarks that he found Sonic and his friends thanks to them. He proceeds to explain that he first detected Sonic due to the energy blast that occurred when Sonic had his emotional breakdown in the academy's baseball field reaching his home planet; taking interest, he later saw Sonic and his friends save Skylands from Dr. Krankcase as well as all the other threats they have been dealing with, much to his amazement. With the group equally amazed by how much Tails knows about them, the fox reveals that when he learned that Knuckles was after Sonic, he had to do something and left to warn him and the others. Immediately after, Spyro gets a text message from Jet-Vac, prompting him to write one back.

Back in Campus Town, Dr. Krankcase and Hood Sickle have intercepted Spyro and Jet-Vac's text messages. As Knuckles displays his limited understanding of technology, Hood Sickle quietly asks Dr. Krankcase why they are working with an "imbecile" like him. Dr. Krankcase explains that the Emerald he seeks can power his wildest designs and both get his genius recognized across the galaxy and let him command unimaginable power. Reading further into Sonic's lie of enjoying the night at home, Knuckles believes Sonic and his friends have returned there. Dr. Krankcase corrects him, though, having pinpointed their location in the Frostfest Mountains with his technology. After fiddling with a hologram of Sonic, Knuckles and Dr. Krankcase head out. Knuckles, however, asks what to do about Hood Sickle, to which Dr. Krankcase insists that they ditch him for now. Knuckles is not pleased with this decision, labeling it a "dishonor", but Dr. Krankcase notes that "dis" is how he rolls.

In the Frostfest Mountains, Spyro and Tails bond over the fox's skills of technology as Tails reveals to the group that his true name is Miles Prower and he chose to call himself Tails to define his namesake himself as a person. As Tails asks Spyro about his natural-born chaos energy, it is also revealed that Sonic and Tails' home planet is called Mobius and they both lived on separate islands before their departure (South Island for Sonic and West Side Island for Tails, respectively).

Soon, however, the group's peaceful dinner is interrupted when Slam Bam, Fizzy's bullying son, and his friends comes over and mess with Spyro as Slam Bam hates outsiders. As Spyro is being bullied, Tails tries to save him, but he is bullied as well when he tries to use his faulty translator. Sonic tries to stop Slam Bam's antics, but during the confusion, his and Tails' disguises are revealed, and Slam Bam, branding Sonic and Tails as monsters, grabs the hedgehog and fox, preparing to throw them into the fireplace with the help of his friends. Spyro and the others rush to the rescue but due to the stress of the situation, Spyro's chaos energy accidentally causes a static electric shock on Slam Bam and he and his friends prepare to toss the dragon, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor into the fire as well. Just as they are about to meet a fiery fate, Tails finds a reference to a Yeti custom on his Miles Electric and shouts "Pivonka," which surprises the crowd.

Soon after, all eyes turn to Slam Bam, who accepts the Pivonka challenge, deciding to put aside his dislike of outsiders for now. When Sonic asks what "Pivonka" means, Scratch explains that it is a Yeti tradition to settle disputes: if they win, they are free to go, but if they lose, they will be thrown into the fire. As the crowd makes room for the challenge, Stealth Elf suggests they should grab the map and leave. However, Tails realizes he left the map on the table, which the waitress has put away. Slam Bam steps forward and begins to dance to the local music, making Eruptor realize that "Pivonka" is a dance-off. Sonic and his friends attempt to dance to get the map, but they struggle with the rhythm. Meanwhile, the map gets stuck to Slam Bam's foot. Scratch tries to retrieve it, but the challenger grabs it first and challenges her to come and take it. As the situation escalates, Tails starts to lose his confidence, especially as the crowd begins to call them "freaks." Despite this, Sonic remains undaunted and insists that he and his friends need Tails' help. However, Tails is too anxious, feeling out of place and knowing that the situation is his fault. Then, Sonic and Stealth Elf come up with an idea. They connect the hedgehog's phone to the speakers and has them and their friends dance to their own music in their unique style, which is much more successful. Additionally, by using Tails' Miles Electric to create holograms of themselves, Sonic and his friends manage to outdance Slam Bam and reclaim the map. The impressed patrons then cheer for them, lifting them into the air and celebrating their victory. Fizzy then drags his son, intent on scolding him for his actions and allows the visitors to play some of the games at the festival, which they then accept.

In the aftermath of the festival, Sonic and his friends are resting at their hotel room, with Tails expressing amazement at Sonic's ability to win the Pivonka challenge with the help of his friends. Scratch then tells Tails, as her friend, to stick with her and her friends if he wants to know more about Earth. Surprised, Tails asks Scratch and her friends if she really means that he is their friend, which Sonic insists as Stealth Elf calls Tails "the sweetest and smartest little fox [she] has ever met", forming a happy smile on Tails' face before the fox leaps up and hugs the two, which surprises the elf at the display of affection but is nonetheless touched as Tails' namesakes brush against Spyro, Eruptor and Scratch, making them laugh while Scratch calls Tails a "super sweet fox". Tails then explains that he never had any friends growing up because people in his village thought his fluffy twin-tails were weird. However, he noticed that Sonic became a legend despite being weird himself and was both inspired by him and spurred to help him and his friends because of that. With Sonic and the others relating to Tails' past, Sonic tells Tails that he and his friends are happy to have him around, to which Tails agrees with. Getting tired, Tails falls asleep next to the fireplace with Spyro and Scratch cuddling with him while Stealth Elf, Eruptor and Sonic's backs are turned. Tucking the fox, dragon and feathercat in with a blanket, Sonic, Stealth Elf and Eruptor lay on the ground with their backs turned towards Tails, Spyro and Scratch, and seconds later. Tails' warm and fluffy twin-tails cover him in return to his action, providing Sonic comfort as he sleeps while Scratch and Spyro do the same with their wings to Stealth Elf and Eruptor. The next morning, however, Eruptor wakes up to find one of the patrons hugging him in her sleep, much to his uneasiness, while Tails and the others are laying farther away from the lava monster.

Not long after, Sonic, Eruptor and Stealth Elf are being carried through the mountains by Tails, Scratch and Spyro, where the fox has pinpointed the coordinates on the map now that the blizzard has cleared up. There, they find an ancient temple inside a hole in a mountain. Heading into the temple, the group finds a wall with ancient inscriptions, which amazes Eruptor and Stealth Elf as they have never seen Mobian writing before. Upon Scratch's inquiry, Tails begins translating it as Spyro writes it down on a journal he grabbed earlier after getting the fox's consent to do so, revealing that ages ago, the fearsome warriors of the echidna tribe forged the seven Chaos Emeralds into the most unstoppable weapon ever created: the Master Emerald. With its power, a single warrior could defeat entire armies. Believing that no one should have such power, an ancient order of heroes, the Giant Owls, recovered the Emerald and swore to protect it from evil, thereby sparking a centuries-long conflict between the two orders. Heading deeper into the temple, They all find a giant owl statue with inscribed slots on it. Recognizing the symbols on the slots from Longclaw's map, Sonic aligns the symbols as displayed on the map. This triggers a mystical mechanism that reveals the compass leading to the Emerald, which Sonic grabs.

Unfortunately, Knuckles and Dr. Krankcase arrive in the Egg Mobile immediately after with Badniks, who destroy the door out of the temple. The two thank them for doing all the hard work and seek to take the compass off their hands. After some banter, Dr. Krankcase fires a missile that Sonic redirects into the owl statue, causing the temple to start caving in and open a way for them. Heading for the exit, Sonic, Eruptor and Stealth Elf each snatch a panel from a Badnik that Sonic destroys, before they, Spyro, Scratch and Tails reach a steep drop off a mountainside. After telling Tails, Scratch and Spyro to take the high route, Sonic, Eruptor and Stealth Elf head down the mountain on the panels like snowboards. However, the Badniks pursue and open fire on them, with Tails, Spyro and Scratch unable to get close due to the fire and Dr. Krankcase. Knuckles, who got stuck in the temple, escapes and imitates Sonic and friends' makeshift snowboard maneuver to pursue him. Meanwhile, Sonic and Stealth Elf use snowballs at high speed to throw off the Badniks while Eruptor does the same with lava balls, only to run into another swarm of them. However, Sonic manages to dodge them all with his super speed before using a Buzz Bomber to destroy the others, allowing Stealth Elf and Eruptor to safely sled down the mountain.

As the ground team continues their trip, Knuckles soon catches up to them, much to Eruptor annoyance. The four fight while they slide down the mountain, but despite posturing that he is doing better than Knuckles in response to the echidna boasting himself that he has been training for this quest his whole life, Knuckles eventually manages to knock Sonic and his friends off their snowboards with a display of his power, causing them to land on the edge of a cliff; all of Sonic's Rings fall out of his pouch in the process, leaving him with no means to escape. Climbing back up to see Knuckles in front of him and his friends, Eruptor mocks his opponent's temper being similar to his own, to which Knuckles replies that he knows nothing about him. Stealth Elf bitterly retorts that she knows echidnas have a habit of ruining her friend's life; referring to Sonic's, but Knuckles tells her and her friends that he lost everything because of Sonic. He explains that years ago, his tribe was on the verge of its greatest victory. Having located Longclaw, the last of the owl warriors, the tribe were heading out to obtain what knowledge of the Master Emerald she had. A then-young Knuckles wanted to join them, but his father kept him from coming along, insisting that his moment to honor their tribe would come, but that this was not the moment. However, he never saw his father or tribe again after they left. This makes Stealth Elf regret what she said and apologizes for her choice of words as Eruptor is saddened and Sonic sympathizes with Knuckles' story, recalling his last moments with Longclaw and sadly admitting that they both lost everything that day. Hearing this, Knuckles begins to soften up, only to be trapped by Tails' electric bindings which are enhanced by Scratch's crystal powers and Spyro's binding spell. This causes Knuckles to believe Sonic, Stealth Elf and Eruptor were deceiving him as he breaks free of the restraints, despite the elf attempting to explain that what she and her friends said was genuine and not lies to get Knuckles to lower his guard. Sonic tries passing the compass over to Tails, Spyro and Scratch, but Dr. Krankcase swoops in front of the fox, dragon and feathercat and snatches the compass at the last moment before firing some missiles behind them, the explosions of which knock Scratch out as she takes the full-brunt of the hit to protect Tails. However, Tails' right namesake tail and Spyro's left wing are damaged as they fall on the snow with the unconscious Scratch. Immediately concerned for their family and friends (new and old), Sonic, Eruptor and Stealth Elf rush over to help, with Sonic and Eruptor begging the feathercat to wake up as Stealth Elf looks over the damage to Tails and Spyro. Knuckles hitches a ride with Dr. Krankcase, noting that Sonic chose Scratch, Spyro and Tails over the compass; Dr. Krankcase simply writes off their friendship as a weakness, much to Knuckles' suspicions and disgust at Krankcase's lack of honor. Immediately after, an avalanche occurs, forcing Sonic, Eruptor, Stealth Elf, Spyro and Tails to take Scratch and try sledding away as Knuckles and Dr. Krankcase escape by using Eruptor's lava powers to mold the board together to form a sled big enough for everyone. With no other choice, Spyro tries calling Jet-Vac on his phone.

Back in Fantasm Forest, Spitfire and Stormblade's wedding ceremony is underway, with a biplane arranged by Spitfire flying by and carrying a banner attributing the couple. However, Jet-Vac's ringtone disturbs the ceremony. He tries to put his phone away, but Stealth Elf does the call this time, much to Stormblade's angry annoyance. This time, Jet-Vac sees from a text message from Stealth Elf that it is an emergency, walking away from the ceremony to answer the video call, where Tails hides behind Eruptor to not arouse suspicion. Although angry at first, the Sky Baron notices that Sonic and his friends are out sledding, with Sonic telling him to use the Ring that he gave him to open a portal for him and his friends to escape the avalanche they are going through. Jet-Vac proceeds to throw the Ring, but nothing happens. Taking a closer took, Jet-Vac realizes he got the Ring mixed up with his niece's wedding ring when he and Pop Fizz were teasing Misty and that Spitfire is currently putting it on Stormblade Eruptor urging him to hurry, Jet-Vac disrupts the wedding ceremony and is forced to punch Spitfire to get the Ring back when Spyro orders Jet-Vac on the phone to hurry, alerting everyone on stage of the situation. Jet-Vac then opens the Ring portal in front of the wedding reception; Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf, Eruptor and Tails blast through it, followed by a wave of snow that buries everyone.

As everyone recovers, Jet-Vac is notably upset at Sonic and the others while Pop Fizz wants an explanation. Sonic and Stealth Elf give a quick rundown of what has happened since yesterday before turning their attention to Scratch, who is still unconscious and is being dug out of the snow by Spyro and Tails as Eruptor introduces the shy fox to his fellow Skylanders. However, Sonic, Spyro and Tails are soon hit by a taser net and are knocked out from the electric shocks as every one of the guests draw taser pistols at the Skylanders, much to Stormblade's confusion. Commander Buzz then shows up and reveals that he and his associates are federal agents, including Spitfire. Realizing that her wedding was a setup as a part of Buzz's "Operation: Catfish" and that nearly everyone involved is an agent, Stormblade loses her temper and tries to attack Spitfire with her wing blades, but she is restrained as Spitfire regretfully apologizes for tricking her. Meanwhile, Sonic, Tails, Scratch and Spyro are hauled away in separate cages. Concerned, Jet-Vac and Eruptor begins to punch, lava-blast and vaccum-blast the agents in order to stop them but are held back by Spitfire and are taken away along with them. Pop Fizz and Stealth Elf try telling Buzz that Sonic is no threat as he has studied at Skylander Academy so Eon can prove his innocence, but Buzz insists otherwise and declares that their days of aiding and abetting him are over before ordering for Sonic, Tails, Spyro, Scratch, Eruptor and Jet-Vac to be secured in the hotel for now. Stormblade, however, still wants an explanation for everything. Buzz explains that following the incident at the academy, a global taskforce named Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.) was created to help the Skylanders protect Skylands from alien threats, which includes Sonic. Stealth Elf, however, insists that Dr. Krankcase is the real threat, not Sonic. Buzz rebuts that Dr. Krankcase is dead, but she tells him otherwise and mentions that Buzz is taking away the only ones that can stop him, prompting Buzz to call in aid to find the doctor before taking his leave. Misty then brings Pop Fizz and Stealth Elf Scratch's left-behind mask and gauntlets as well as Tails' left-behind backpack with gadgets, which inspires the elf to go save her friends with Pop Fizz's help as she dons the mask and gauntlets that are revealed to magically change size depending on the user's appearance. Stormblade, wanting a word with Spitfire, is in on it.

While Sonic and his friends are taken into the hotel, Sonic and Spyro's only concern is Scratch's wellbeing, desperately begging for the agents to get her some medical help as Tails bemoans that he doesn't have his backpack with his gadgets to get everyone out.

Meanwhile, Stealth Elf, Pop Fizz and Stormblade scope out the hotel, which is infested with G.U.N. agents. Pop Fizz and Stealth Elf then decide to go after their friends while an emotionally unstable Stormblade wants to get even with Spitfire. Arming themselves with Tails' gadgets, the three head for the hotel. Upon encountering their first agent, Pop Fizz throws an anti-gravity gadget that sends the agent flying high into the sky, allowing them to proceed. Eventually finding the place where Sonic and the others are being held, Pop Fizz, Stealth Elf and Stormblade split up to find their respective targets. Just as the gremlin and elf enter the hotel with with Scratch's gear and Tails' backpack, however, they are surrounded by G.U.N. agents. Fortunately, Stormblade comes to the rescue with a homing boomerang from Tails that knocks the agents out before Stealth Elf can use the feathercat's gear, allowing her and Pop Fizz to continue.

Meanwhile, Spitfire, remorseful over what he did to Stormblade, tries to have a toast with Buzz, only for the agent that was lifted into the sky to come back down and warn them of Pop Fizz and Stormblade's attack. Immediately after, the lark arrives in a golf cart, crashing into the ceremony's set pieces while amazing Spitfire with her passion. As the flame spirit tries explaining himself to Stormblade, Buzz threatens her with a taser pistol. When she refuses to back down, Buzz fires, only for Spitfire to take the shot for her. Buzz expresses his disappointment with the flame spirit, but nonetheless takes aim at Stormblade again. She, however, takes out a blaster made by Tails and blows up her wedding cake to pieces with it, showing she has the better firepower and causing Buzz to surrender. Stormblade then confronts Spitfire, asking if their love was ever real. He then admits that while he did not think he could love others, he still ended up truly falling in love with her. With that, they both kiss.

Back inside the hotel, Pop Fizz and Stealth Elf find and free Sonic, Tails, Spyro, Scratch, Eruptor and Jet-Vac from their restraints as the elf calls Tails being into "some crazy cool stuff".

Meanwhile, Knuckles, Dr. Krankcase and some Badniks arrive at an island not too far away via a Ring. Using his control glove's scanner, Dr. Krankcase locates a pedestal in the sand which Knuckles inserts the compass into. Soon after, a mystical mechanism is activated, and the sea in front of them split apart to reveal an ancient temple in the middle of it.

Back in Fantasm Forest, Stealth Elf and Pop Fizz are tending to Tails, Spyro and the still-unconscious Scratch when they, Sonic, Eruptor, Jet-Vac and Buzz notice storm clouds and a green pillar of energy on the horizon. Sonic and Spyro recognize it as a sign that Knuckles and Dr. Krankcase have found the Master Emerald. Jet-Vac suggests that they make a plan together, but Sonic refuses, saying that there is no time for a plan and that he is the only one fast enough to stop things before they worsen. Stealth Elf and Eruptor disagree with his course of action, but Sonic, after expressing his sorrow over allowing someone who idolizes him to nearly get killed on his watch and blowing his chance to be a hero, declares that he is not letting anyone else get hurt because of him, assures them that he will fix the issue while he still has the chance, and runs off after Spyro convinces the hedgehog to let him help despite his wounded wing. Scratch wakes up immediately after and tries to follow them, but she is too injured to keep up. Stealth Elf, Tails and Jet-Vac try to tell her to rest, but the feathercat grimly informs them that Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz have no idea what Sonic and Spyro are up against. Eruptor and his friends (sans Tails and Scratch) then turn to Buzz, with Jet-Vac asking if he believes them now; humbled, Buzz can only nod his head.

Meanwhile, back in Campus Town, the cadets (Bad Breath, Food Fight, Wind-Up, Trigger Happy, Chill, Hex, Skull, Roller Brawl and Echo) head to the Mean Bean Coffee Café as they shop around the town as they relaxed on their school break, only to discover that the café is closed. Suspicious, they take a peek inside, only to see Hood Sickle fiddling with the equipment as he designs a new look for Dr. Krankcase. Intruding on Hood Sickle, the cadets hold him at gunpoint with their powers and gear while Wind-Up, Trigger Happy and Food Fight have him show that his control gloves are not dangerous with outlandish demands.

Back in Fantasm Forest, Sonic and Spyro are at the coastline. Despite his dislike of water, Sonic pulls himself together and charges up his chaos energy before running at full speed across the sea with Spyro holding onto him to serve as a lifeguard with his wings catching the air currents as his wounded wing can only allow him to glide. However, the waves worsen as Sonic gets further away from the shore, making it hard for him to navigate and he eventually wipes out, prompting Spyro to dive in after the hedgehog. Fortunately, the two wake up soon after, having washed up on the island's shore by Scratch, who followed them out of concern despite her wounds, and find the temple.

Inside said temple, Knuckles, Dr. Krankcase and some Badniks are making their way through a labyrinth of traps, barely managing to stay one step ahead of them. Along the way, Dr. Krankcase's accompanying Badniks are destroyed by the traps. After just barely avoiding getting crushed by a spiked ball and swinging axe, Dr. Krankcase decides that they should approach the labyrinth more scientifically and so deploys a miniature Badnik from his glove that scans the labyrinth ahead of them, which Dr. Krankcase uses to form a holographic map with his control glove for them to follow. Elsewhere, Sonic, Spyro (with his wing now up to a small sore) and Scratch (her wounds now almost fully healed) enter the labyrinth via a water slide and decide to run and fly through it at high speed in hopes of reaching the center, either moving too fast for the traps or barely dodging them along the way.

Meanwhile, Knuckles and Dr. Krankcase reach the center of the temple after Knuckles punches down a wall. Seeing the Emerald's pedestal ahead of them, Knuckles proclaims that order will be restored thanks to their collaboration. Dr. Krankcase, however, declares Knuckles useless now and prepares to backstab him with his control glove's taser, but the action is interrupted when the two hear Sonic, Spyro and Scratch speed and fly through the labyrinth before crashing through the roof and landing in front of them. Infuriated, Knuckles asks Sonic why he keeps interfering with his destiny, to which Scratch replies that Sonic is doing it to protect his friends and family as the hedgehog states that if Knuckles wants the Emerald, he has to get through him, Spyro and Scratch. Sonic then speeds toward the Master Emerald with Spyro and Scratch tailing him, but Knuckles intercepts them, and both Spyro and Scratch are blown out of the way as the hedgehog and echidna engage in an intense fight: one that Sonic says aloud that he does not want to have with Knuckles, but the echidna is not leaving him and his friends with much of a choice.

As Sonic and Knuckles clash, the tide of their battle constantly shifts. Meanwhile, Dr. Krankcase is closing in on the Emerald. As Knuckles continues fighting Sonic to the point he tries to crush the hedgehog with a boulder, Spyro stops the battle by standing in between the hedgehog and echidna right before Knuckles can attack Sonic and warns the echidna to not trust Krankcase and instead trust him and his friends as Scratch helps Sonic back up just when they and Spyro notice Dr. Krankcase's approach and point it out to him. Although Knuckles is initially confused at this, he eventually realizes the situation and calls Dr. Krankcase out for breaking their deal and betraying their supposed friendship as he tossed away the boulder he is holding. Dr. Krankcase laughs maniacally and mocks Knuckles for his lack of intelligence, gullibility, and his values of friendship. Krankcase ignored the fact that they were friends, to which he never planned on being friends with him to begin with, and was only using him for his own goals, he finally states that Knuckles was nothing but a mere means to an end before seizing the Emerald leaving him to die. The moment Dr. Krankcase touches the Master Emerald, it glows an extremely bright green and sends a shockwave out at Sonic, Spyro, Scratch and Knuckles, sending them backwards. The light dims down and reveals Dr. Krankcase holding the Master Emerald above his head, his red suit now black with green outlines, as he absorbs the Emerald and warps away in a flash, causing the temple to collapse. With water flooding in, Sonic, Spyro and Scratch start to flee but soon notice that Knuckles is pinned down by a pillar, unable to free himself and losing consciousness in the rising water. Diving down, Spyro swims over to Knuckles and lifts the pillar. However, Knuckles is still knocked-out, prompting Spyro to perform a breath-swapping spell, which makes him lend his own breath to Knuckles underwater and is knocked out upon completion. Luckily, the spell works and Knuckles regains consciousness after being given air, he grabs Spyro upon realizing what had happened and they escape to where Scratch and Sonic are. With Knuckles and Spyro both safe, the four escape to the surface with Sonic holding onto Scratch due to his inability to swim.

Once safe upon reaching the shores, Scratch tries to thank Knuckles for saving Spyro as the dragon regains consciousness but the echidna, clearly disappointed, states that he's not in the mood to talk, feeling that his quest to bring honor to his ancestors has failed because Dr. Krankcase, the person he thought he could trust, used and betrayed him to seize the Emerald for himself. Unwilling to let it go, Sonic provokes Knuckles into answering by throwing sand balls at him. Knuckles reveals that he was repaying Spyro for saving him, despite not understanding his and his friends' unusual tactics. Spyro responds that he did not use a tactic and instead he could not allow Knuckles to drown, which confuses Knuckles further, given that he has been trying to destroy him, Sonic and their friends ever since they met. Sonic and Scratch both recite their late father's advice about how being a hero means taking responsibility for others, which Knuckles starts to understand. Soon after, Tails, Stealth Elf and Eruptor arrive at the island in the Tornado, much to Sonic, Spyro and Scratch's delight. Sonic tries to convince Knuckles to join them in stopping Dr. Robotnik. Knuckles asks Sonic how he can be so hopeful and free despite having lost everything, as he has with his numerous failures. Sonic, Spyro and Scratch explain that the hedgehog has found a new family and friends to help him through tough times. After telling Knuckles he no longer has to be alone, the four solidify their newfound friendship with a handshake—one that crushes Sonic's hand and Spyro's paw, much to their annoyance and disbelief but Scratch is unaffected due to her strength rivaling Knuckles' own.

Later that night, the group flies off the island and rest at a beachside cabin, where Scratch; after being informed of what happened to the echidna in the past by Stealth Elf, earns Knuckles' sympathy over losing a parent by telling him about how her father; Scar, died and about how she was after that. When Knuckles asks if her heartache ever went away, to which Scratch replies that it didn't but over time, she learned that acceptance replaced the pain she had dealt with after she realized that her father would've wanted her to be living her life happily and theorizes that Knuckles' own father wanted that for his son upon his death. This helps Knuckles come to terms with his father's death and thanks Scratch for her compassion.

Back in the Mean Bean Coffee Café, the cadets have cuffed Hood Sickle and are trying to interrogate him. However, their attempts at playing good cop/bad cop in order to get answers have proven fruitless. Immediately after, Dr. Krankcase teleports into the café in an Emerald-empowered state. Feeling an elevated sense of self, Dr. Krankcase adjusts himself to his new powers as he teleports around, quickly forcing the cadets to surrender while freeing Hood Sickle, who then reveals to Dr. Krankcase that the café is surrounded with armed personnel and military vehicles from G.U.N., but Dr. Krankcase tells him that he has a solution to the predicament.

Outside, Buzz arrives in a helicopter with Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz where an agent informs him of Dr. Krankcase and Hood Sickle's presence in the café with hostages, to which the Skylanders recognize as the cadets when said agent mentions Bad Breath's belching problems. Dr. Krankcase soon comes out, and both him and Jet-Vac have some banter as the Sky Baron informs Krankcase of Scar's death until Buzz tells Dr. Krankcase that he is finished, as the Skylands government has seized all his assets; the official dares the villain to prove how formidable he is without his robots. In response, Dr. Krankcase uses his new powers to tear apart G.U.N.'s vehicles and all other forms of technology in the vicinity and pull the pieces into a tornado, including Hood Sickle upon his request to come with the doctor. Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz quickly realize that Dr. Krankcase is building something using the pieces.

Meanwhile, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor emerge from a Ring outside of town in the Tornado plane. After the group spots Dr. Krankcase's tornado and discuss the threat created by his continued usage of the Master Emerald's power, Eruptor voices his uncertainty over bringing Knuckles with them. Spyro, however, insists that Knuckles is not evil, just "mixed up", which Knuckles vehemently denies. After Tails, Eruptor and Knuckles then come to a sort of understanding after the lava monster decides to trust Spyro's good sense of judgement in people, the group head towards the tornado, inside of which a machine is forming, which Dr. Krankcase boards with Hood Sickle inside a secondary command center in it. The tornado then dissipates and the Giant Eggman Robot is revealed. It was a towering mech sporting the doctor's likeness. With the robot responding to Dr. Krankcase's movements, he has it begin trampling into Campus Town and Skylander Academy while playing music. While G.U.N. falls back, unable to fight it without their heavy armor or weapons, Sonic and his crew move in in the Tornado. Before Sonic can formulate a plan, though, Knuckles and Eruptor jump off the Tornado as Scratch flies with them to make sure the echidna and lava monster don't get in trouble, leaving Sonic, Spyro, Stealth Elf and Tails to face the Giant Eggman Robot without one. As Sonic taunts Dr. Krankcase, the doctor decides to fire missiles at him. However, Hood Sickle has yet to figure out how to operate the Giant Eggman Robot, so Dr. Krankcase does it himself, shocking the hooded villain with his energy as he operates the control panel. As a missile barrage is fired from the Giant Eggman Robot, Tails manages to steer the Tornado through the barrage unharmed. Just as Sonic relaxes, he is knocked away by a missile hitting him, prompting Spyro to fly after the hedgehog.

Meanwhile, down on the ground, Knuckles, Eruptor and Scratch approach the Giant Eggman Robot head-on, with the echidna branding Dr. Krankcase a "deceiver", blinded by vengeful fury at Krankcase for deceiving him and betraying his trust. In response, Dr. Krankcase tries to crush him with his robot's hand. Knuckles, Eruptor and Scratch hit the hand with their best attacks, but it does no harm (aside from causing Dr. Krankcase very mild pain). Back in the air, Tails shoots the Giant Eggman Robot with machine gun gadgets equipped to the Tornado as Stealth Elf does the same with her shurikens, but they also make no difference. Furthermore, the Tornado's wings get crushed by the 'Stache Smasher', which Hood Sickle figured out how to use after reading the Giant Eggman Robot's manual. The Tornado subsequently crashes into the ground and is destroyed, but Tails gets out himself and Stealth Elf of the plane at the last moment. Back to Sonic and Spyro, the hedgehog has managed to take control of the missile that hit him and redirects it into the Giant Eggman Robot's knee as Spyro shoots a fireball at the same time, shaking the machine enough to knock Hood Sickle out and leaving Dr. Krankcase on his own (though he is more concerned about a hostile workplace report from his subordinate).

As the group gathers on the main street, Tails, Stealth Elf, Spyro and Knuckles feel uncertain about what to do next. Sonic points out that if they each attack alone, they are likely to fail. However, he suggests that if they combine their strength, speed, flight, fire, crystals, teleportation and intelligence as a team, they will have a better chance of succeeding. Everyone agrees and Sonic declares that this is their moment to shine. Meanwhile, inside the Giant Eggman Robot, Dr. Krankcase sends out his army of chaos energy-enhanced Badniks to confront the trio. As the heroes engage the Badniks, Spyro asks Tails for suggestions. Tails responds that they need to find the weak spot of the Giant Eggman Robot. Knuckles and Eruptor suggest the groin as a traditional weak spot, but Sonic, Scratch and Stealth Elf reject that suggestion out of disgust. As the Giant Eggman Robot opens fire at them with lasers and they continue to demolish the Badniks, Sonic realizes that he is Dr. Krankcase's weak spot (or groin, as he puts it), noting that he "[lives] rent-free in this dude's head"; he reasons that if he can rile Dr. Krankcase up and get his attention, he will leave the Giant Eggman Robot open to a flanking maneuver from the others. With the plan agreed upon as Stealth Elf and Eruptor decide to help Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz evacuate the civilians, the group splits up, with Sonic running up to the Giant Eggman Robot and taunting Dr. Krankcase into pursuing him. As Dr. Krankcase has the Giant Eggman Robot follow Sonic out of Campus Town and the academy's premises, Tails carries Knuckles onto the backside of the giant robot with Spyro and Scratch's help as Knuckles is slightly heavier than Eruptor (or is "1 million percent' muscle", as Knuckles puts it). At the same time, Stealth Elf and Eruptor help Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz evacuate the civilians. Upon stopping a local and his flying truck, however, they decide to go get Sonic: their "buddy", as Eruptor puts it. They borrow the truck from the local and head out in it.

Meanwhile, out in the forest, Dr. Krankcase takes a moment to catch his breath while Sonic taunts him about his supposed future plans. In response, Dr. Krankcase declares his intention to enslave all creature-kind in Slylands and conquer the entire multiverse. He then begins firing eye lasers at Sonic, who narrowly dodges them. As Sonic runs across the bridge leading from Campus Town to the academy's outer portals, he starts to tire and slow down, allowing the Giant Eggman Robot to catch up and unleash a nose beam that destroys the bridge, sending Sonic plummeting into the ravine below.

While Dr. Krankcase gloats about his superiority over Sonic, he notices Tails and Spyro unexpectedly breaking into the Giant Eggman Robot's cockpit. Tails uses holographic images of himself and Spyro to distract Dr. Krankcase. Declaring that he can't be outsmarted, Dr. Krankcase blasts away the holograms, leaving Tails and Spyro at his mercy. However, the dragon and fox reveal that they were merely a distraction. At that moment, Dr. Krankcase sees Knuckles and Scratch on the other side of the cockpit and mocks the echidna for switching sides. In response, Knuckles repurposes Dr. Krankcase's earlier phrase, "Dis is how I roll," and leaps at him with Scratch by his side, delivering a punch and a claw swipe that knocks the Master Emerald out of Dr. Krankcase's grasp. Stunned and back to normal, Dr. Krankcase causes the Giant Eggman Robot to shut down, which then falls over, leading to Tails, Spyro and Scratch and Knuckles sliding out of it with the Master Emerald and landing outside with the fox and echidna completely knocked out as Spyro and Scratch are badly bruised.

Recovering, Dr. Krankcase uses his control glove to activate the Giant Eggman Robot's auxiliary power, causing the robot to start powering up again. Meanwhile, Sonic comes back to his senses and spots the now-cracked Master Emerald nearby. As Sonic limps his way towards it with help from the wounded Scratch and Spyro, Dr. Krankcase manages to get the Giant Eggman Robot back on its feet and walk towards the trio. In the process, he fails to notice Stealth Elf, Eruptor, Pop Fizz and Jet-Vac arriving from behind in the truck. Then, just before the Giant Eggman Robot can step on Sonic, Spyro and Scratch, the feathercat picks up the Emerald and she, her brother and friend are picked up by Stealth Elf and Jet-Vac as they, Eruptor and Pop Fizz drive by in the truck. Dr. Krankcase has his robot punch the ground just behind the truck, causing it to topple and crash from the shockwave.

Crawling out of the wreck, Sonic and the others spot the Giant Eggman Robot approaching to finish the job. With the Emerald in her paws, Scratch believes that they can still defeat Dr. Krankcase. As Spyro tries to figure out how it works, the Emerald's brilliant green fades to gray as it crumbles to pieces in Scratch's paws, releasing the seven Chaos Emeralds from it, much to their, Sonic, Stealth Elf and Eruptor's horror. Dr. Krankcase proceeds to use the Giant Eggman Robot's flamethrower to trap the group inside a ring of fire. Sonic tells Stealth Elf to grab her friends and save themselves, but she and the others refuse to leave Sonic behind, insisting that they are family. Declaring their love for each other, Sonic and his family accept their fate and prepare to die together as the Giant Eggman Robot brings its foot down upon them. However, just before this, the Chaos Emeralds respond to Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor's emotions and they inadvertently absorb them.

Tails, Knuckles and Dr. Krankcase believe that Sonic and the Skylanders are dead, but the Giant Eggman Robot suddenly jerks up, concerning Dr. Krankcase after he had briefly celebrated his long-awaited victory. Sonic, now transformed into the golden Super Sonic, Stealth Elf, now turned into the sunny grassland-colored Super Stealth Elf, and Eruptor, now turned into the volcano eruption-colored Super Eruptor, are lifting it with incredible power as Spyro, now turned into the sun-colored Super Spyro, and Scratch, now turned into the dawn-colored Super Scratch, use their powers to help lift the foot, while the others, including the still-alive and well Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz which happened thanks to the group's intervention, watch in awe. After blasting through the Giant Eggman Robot's foot, Super Spyro and Super Scratch cut its head off and Super Sonic coldly tells Dr. Krankcase that his plot is over with an angry glare. Dr. Krankcase tries talking the super-transformed beings into a truce, but it is just a distraction as he uses his control glove to have the Giant Eggman Robot take punches at him. Super Stealth Elf and Super Eruptor, however, both effortlessly stop and blow the robot's arms to pieces before Super Sonic pierces it several times at super speed and toppling it over with a tap of his foot, leaving Dr. Krankcase to fall with his collapsing robot to what appears to be his death in another attempt to prevent the remorseless doctor from ever returning again to wreak more havoc and endanger everyone.

As the super-transformed beings descend, Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz rush over to congratulate them. However, Knuckles stops them, insisting that Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor has been corrupted by the power of the Chaos Emeralds and is no longer the friends they once knew. Super Sonic then conjures a thunderstorm that concentrates in his hand. To everyone’s surprise, it is revealed that Sonic was only creating a celebratory chili dog for himself. Spyro then does it for himself and Eruptor before making one for Pop Fizz (who all enjoy it) and summoning another one for Knuckles, which lands and splatters on the echidna’s face. Knuckles bluntly remarks that Sonic, Eruptor and Spyro are still the same as they've always been. Stealth Elf then conjures a napkin to clean the chili off of Knuckles' face as Scratch does the same, making Knuckles remark that the girls have the same status as the boys.

The super-transformed beings subsequently relinquish the Chaos Emeralds, which vanish into parts unknown, and they all revert to their normal states. However, the affects of the Super forms have not only caused Spyro to finally be able to use his purple-colored Chaos Energy as a misty-flame like aura also surrounds his eyes when they are active, but it has also caused markings and streaks to appear on the fur, scales, hair and skin of Spyro (with a red wing ombre, horn tips, tail tip, paws and mask-like marking on his face), Scratch (with a light blue feather ombre on her fur-like mane and feathers), Stealth Elf (with yellow streaks in her hair) and Eruptor (with a white mask-like marking on his face much like Spyro's and markings on both his wrists and ankles).

After Sonic and his friends receive hugs from Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz, Tails asks why the five gave up all that power. Sonic explains that he and his friends "still have some growing up to do" and that they are fine just being kids for now. Meanwhile, Knuckles starts to reassemble the pieces of the Master Emerald. Once it is finally complete, he questions what they should do next. Tails reminds them that both the echidnas and owls wanted to protect the Emerald from evil forces and Knuckles mentions that they've all passed on to the Great Battleground in the Sky as Stealth Elf states that the two warrior groups' ideals on how the Master Emerald should properly be used soon led to their demise. Sonic suggests that they establish a new order to guard the Emerald, beginning with the seven of them, where Scratch agrees by honoring Scar, Longclaw and Knuckles' father's names by making a feathercat clan consisting of herself, Sonic, Spyro, Stealth Elf, Eruptor, Tails and Knuckles. The echidna agrees to this but also insists that their task is serious and that they must take a vow; to use our powers to keep both Skylands and the universe safe; to watch out for each other and uphold their new tribe's duty. Tails proposes they do a power-bump together to mark their oath and they all comply. Eon then arrives and, after witnessing the battle, promotes Tails and Knuckles with the title of Skylanders for their adventures as Scratch decides to name the new tribe as the Crystalwing Clan in honor of Scar, Longclaw and Knuckles' father with the goal of protecting Skylands and beyond it from evil, which is accepted. Soon, after that, Sonic decides to use his Scar's old house and the hedgehog's secret cave that was turned into a hangout place for him, Scratch, Spyro, Stealth Elf and Eruptor back when they were cadets as the Crystalwing Clan's new home and Eon agrees by giving the hedgehog the key to his late foster father's house.

In an epilogue that takes place some time later on, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf, Eruptor, Jet-Vac, Pop Fizz and Cotton gather at the baseball field at the academy to celebrate their victory against Dr. Krankcase with a baseball game. This field, which had once been the site of Sonic's solitary emotional breakdown eight months prior, has been transformed into a place where he can finally enjoy the sport with his newfound family. In the game, he and Scratch serve as the announcers, Spyro is the plate catcher, Tails is the pitcher, Stealth Elf and Eruptor play as the field catchers while Pop Fizz, Cotton and Jet-Vac are watching from the bleachers as the audience and Knuckles takes on the role of the batter, treating the game like a battle for conquest. Knuckles, unfamiliar with the concept of having fun, struggles to grasp the purpose of the game. However, with encouragement from Spyro, Stealth Elf and Eruptor to simply enjoy himself, Knuckles decides to give it a try. When it is his turn to hit the baseball, Knuckles, disregarding the traditional rules, uses a powerful bump instead of his bat, launching the ball straight through the scoreboard. Despite this, Knuckles joyfully runs around the baseball field, celebrating what he perceives as a win, while Tails and Scratch protest that the hit shouldn't count, calling it a foul as the feathercat puts it. With their only ball now lost as Spyro promises to go find it later, Stealth Elf suggests they go for ice cream and everyone agrees. Meanwhile, at the bleachers, Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz feel happy for Sonic, who has found a supportive group to grow up with. Pop Fizz particularly enjoys Knuckles, saying he "cracks [him] up." Scratch congratulates Sonic on finding friends that are like him, which he happily agrees. Spyro then joins in, expressing that, during the adventure, he has discovered much more, calling the feathercat and hedgehog his "brother" and "sister." This heartfelt moment leaves the two emotional. As the group prepares to drive away in their SuperCharger vehicles, they almost forget the Master Emerald, which is sitting in a cooler. Luckily, Sonic returns just in time to retrieve it once Scratch takes note of its absence.

In a mid-credits scene; around the same time as the main series, G.U.N. forces arrive at the location where the Giant Eggman Robot was destroyed. At the site, Buzz is informed by his agent that they have been unable to locate Dr. Krankcase. Though Buzz is certain that Dr. Krankcase could not have survived and dismisses him with a "good riddance," he fails to notice Hood Sickle, who has disguised himself as a G.U.N. soldier and has managed to sneak away undetected. Buzz then receives information from his agent that, while removing Dr. Krankcase from their databases, they discovered a file dating back over 50 years. This file contains coordinates to a well-hidden black site, and Buzz realizes, with growing concern, that it pertains to "Project Shadow." Meanwhile, in a remote research facility, a capsule opens, revealing an anthropomorphic black and red hedgehog who awakens with eyes crackling with chaos energy.

Trivia[]

  • Stealth Elf and Scratch's attire in the film resemble their game counterparts' respective Series 3 Ninja outfit and Sapphire and/or Ruby ability paths.
    • This is also the first time that the girls are seen with their hair loose.
  • Stormblade, Spitfire and Misty replace Rachel, Randall and Jojo from canon.
  • A majority of the voice cast of the cadets are replaced in the film and will continue on for the rest of the films but will keep their Sonic X Skylanders Academy series voices until Season 3 and the Knuckles sub-series.
    • The only ones who don't get new voices are Echo and Skull.
    • Barrett Wilbert Weed replaces Jill Talley as Roller Brawl for the films.
    • Sofia Carson replaces Ashley Tisdale as Flashwing for the films.
    • Isla Fisher replaces Courtenay Taylor as Hex for the films.
    • Kevin Hart and Tom Middleditch both replace Billy West as Food Fight and Trigger Happy for the films, respectively.
    • Ken Jeong replaces Cedric Yarbrough as Wind-Up for the films.
    • Annet Mahendru replaces Grey DeLisle/Grey Griffin as Chill for the films.
    • James Corden replaces John DiMaggio as Bad Breath for the films.
  • Sonic's Super Sonic form and the Chaos Emeralds were originally supposed to appear in the first film, but they were both scrapped because it didn't make any sense for the former to be included that early and because the film wanted to primarily focus more on the origins of Sonic and Dr. Krankcase's relationship before introducing the other elements. So, the two made their way into this film itself.
    • The film also includes Super Spyro, Super Scratch, Super Stealth Elf and Super Eruptor.
  • This is currently the second hour-long installment between the first film and the episodes of the Knuckles X Skylanders TV sub-series. Additionally, this is the only film that has a two-hour runtime (plus two minutes).
  • Scratch complaining about her leg after arriving in the Labrynth's maze is a reference to the 'My Leg!'' running gag from SpongeBob Squarepants.
  • Unlike canon, the Hedgehog Cave is mentioned but not seen. It will later mentioned in the first episode of the Knuckles X Skylanders TV sub-series and will also make an appearance in Sonic X Skylanders 3: Project Shadow.
  • This is also the only film where Dr. Krankcase doesn't have hair, not counting his pictures that were shown in Hood Sickle's lattes.
  • Sonic X Skylanders 2: Quest for the Emerald is the only film where Dr. Krankcase appears at the beginning. The first film doesn't count because the opening scene was actually showing something that was going to happen at the end of the story.
  • There's an inconsistency between the first film and this film. In the first film, Scar told Scratch, Spyro and Sonic that they and their friends can't put people in danger. But in this film, they and their friends accidentally put a citizen in danger by throwing bombs but they put almost all of them out as Eruptor drives recklessly.
  • When the Owls and the Echidnas' story is shown in a flashback, the Chaos Emeralds are shown. This foreshadows the appearance of Super Sonic, Super Spyro, Super Scratch, Super Stealth Elf and Super Eruptor. During the climax of the film, the Chaos Emeralds turn Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor into their Super forms so that they can defeat Dr. Krankcase.
  • Just before he knocks Scratch out, Dr. Krankcase says, "Later, haters!" This foreshadows his last words at the end of the film. It also foreshadows his return in Sonic X Skylanders 3: Project Shadow.
  • During the climax of the film, Stealth Elf's outfit is gains patches of red due to the elf getting wounds from Krankcase's Giant Eggman Robot. This foreshadows Shadow's appearance during the mid credits scene, as well as his appearance in Sonic X Skylanders 3: Project Shadow.
    • Starting with this film, Stealth Elf's golden leaf hair clip does not make an appearance, foreshadowing that its inability to return up until making a cameo in Season 3.
  • It can be mistaken that Dr. Krankcase is swearing in the scene where he says "It's time to say goodbye to this... PIECE OF SHITTAKE PLANET!", which at the end of said quote sounds like a cuss word.
