Sonic X Skylanders: Gotta Go Fast is the first film in the Sonic X Skylanders franchise. It is the prequel/sequel to the Sonic X Skylanders Academy Season 1 series.
Synopsis[]
Taking place after the episode My Way or the Sky Way, the film features Sonic, Spyro, Stealth Elf, Eruptor and Scratch recalling their last adventure with Scratch's father; Scar, as they worked together to stop the mad scientist Dr. Krankcase, who has stopped at nothing to catch Sonic for world domination across Skylands.
Plot[]
The film opens sometime after the events of My Way or the Sky Way, where Jet-Vac soon discovers old photos of the late Skylander; Scar, in the attic (his new room) of his team's house while going through his stuff. Spyro and his friends; Sonic, Scratch (Scar's daughter), Stealth Elf [wearing a golden leaf hair clip in her hair, on the right side of her head] and Eruptor arrive and decide to tell their friend about their adventure across Skylands before they became students at the academy when Pop Fizz asks of how Sonic came to Scar's family.
Around a year and a half before Scar's untimely demise, in Skylanders Academy and its nearby areas, where a seemingly normal day is interrupted by a shockingly extraordinary spectacle: Sonic is running through the city at breathtaking speed with Spyro and Scratch flying beside him while a flying machine piloted by a green multi-wooden legged scientist dressed in a red flight suit gives chase and fires explosive energy blasts. In the middle of the chase, there is a pause as Sonic, Scratch and Spyro break the fourth wall as they begin to narrate of what is currently happening and rewinds to the very beginning to inform the audience of how things got to this point, recalling Sonic's childhood days living on a beautiful island in another world with palm trees, waterfalls, and even loop-de-loops made of soil. He remembers running joyously across the island every day, relishing in life and making full open use of his natural-born powers despite being told to keep them secret by his doting guardian, Longclaw the Owl.
Young Sonic rushes home to the treehouse where Longclaw is resting and playfully bumps into her to wake her up. Longclaw warns Sonic that he might have been noticed because of his coveted powers, but Sonic is not concerned, saying he was too fast to be seen. But as he affectionately presents a sunflower to her as a gift (a gesture that touches the owl), they are ambushed by a tribe of echidna warriors. With her fears realized, Longclaw desperately flies away with Sonic, only for one of the echidnas to fire his arrow and successfully strike her, causing her to plummet to the ground with Sonic still clinging to her. Though injured, Longclaw reminds Sonic of the importance of keeping himself and his powers hidden, as she knows that others would use them for their own purposes. She uses a golden Ring to open a portal to a planet on the far side of the universe called Skylands and gives the rest of the Rings to Sonic in a small bag and tells him to flee to Skylands, where he will be safe. Sonic reluctantly runs through the portal while Longclaw stays behind to hold off the approaching echidnas. Seeing her in danger, Sonic desperately runs back to try to save her, but the portal disintegrates just before he can reach her, leaving him heartbroken, devastated and alone.
As the sun rises in Treetop Terrance, Sonic walks down a path and meets a then cub Spyro and kitten Scratch, who warn him from a small cliff edge that he is about to be eaten by a pack of Chompies. In a desperate attempt to escape, Sonic scrambles up the cliff edge while doing his best not to use his super speed, begging Spyro and Scratch for help. Though hesitant to help a stranger, the two pull Sonic to safety with some help from Scratch's father and Spyro's mentor, Scar. He protests that Master Eon may not accept a being like Sonic into their home, but Sonic countered that he was simply lost. He then asked which way his home was, and Scar, overcome by sympathy, decided to bring him before Eon. There, Sonic meets a young Stealth Elf and Eruptor as well as Eon. Upon hearing Sonic's story, an equally sympathetic Eon agrees to let Sonic stay with Scar, with the feathercat father adopting the hedgehog as his son.
10 years later, Sonic, now a teenager, has adjusted to life in Skylands and has developed a strong sibling bond with Scratch and a close friendship with Spyro, Stealth Elf and Eruptor with his friends and foster family being the only ones aware of Sonic's power after Sonic used it to save Stealth Elf from a rock-slide one time. Scar tests Sonic's speed with a speed trap along with the help of Spyro and Scratch as the hedgehog playfully messes with his foster father by zipping past his radar gun at ridiculous speeds, first at 296 miles per hour and then at 300 miles per hour. Amused yet amazed at Sonic's power and potential, Scar suggests for Sonic to attend Skylander Academy to properly harness his abilities, but Sonic refuses, secretly out of fear it may attract power-hungry villains due to his past despite Scar's comfort that it will be alright. Saddened by his adoptive son's dismissal, Scar nonetheless accepts Sonic's decision and picks up one of Sonic's blue quills lying near a small opening in the long grass. He takes the quill with him, but is then called away by his friends, Snap Shot and Ka-Boom, to address a minor issue in the local town, leaving Sonic, Scratch and Spyro alone.
After Spyro and Scratch leave to spend time with Stealth Elf and Eruptor, Sonic saves a turtle from being run over by an approaching sheep flock and takes it for a wild ride before leaving it and zipping back to a secret cave located near Scar and Scratch's house. Sonic seems to love his life; he enjoys playing with items from the outside world to keep himself entertained whenever his friends are not around. Despite having a happy life in Skylands, he feels safe knowing he can escape to one of the worlds depicted on a map included in a bag of rings, particularly an uninhabited world full of giant mushrooms.
Although he hates the idea, he is not worried because Skylands feels like home to him. Sonic frequents the Academy every day and secretly observes its residents. His favorites are Scar and Master Eon since they are the few adults who have allowed Sonic stay in Skylands regardless of his dismissal to become a hero. There is, however, one person in town who has already discovered Sonic's speed and refers to him as the "Blue Devil." This person is Trap Master Skylander Gusto, an eccentric old man who tries to make the town aware of Sonic's power, but no one believes him and they laugh at him. Gusto attempts to trap Sonic with various elaborate devices to prove the hedgehog's power, but Sonic always manages to avoid them and has fun, causing Gusto to get caught in his own traps. Having formed a strong bond with Scar and Scratch, Sonic often hangs out with them, Spyro, Eruptor and Stealth Elf, especially on movie nights. Yet, despite his fun interactions and his friends and family, Sonic is still worried he may have to one day leave his new life and never return to Skylands. He fears that he will one day spend the rest of his life alone.
After coming home one night to find raccoons in her father's trash can, much to her annoyance, Scratch receives from Scar her long-awaited letter of acceptance into Skylanders Academy as a cadet to become a Skylander and the two discuss the difficult decision to achieve Scratch's life-long wish, yet she is certain that the event is her chance to do more than simple odd jobs as Scar's daughter and actually save lives, wanting to be her own person and uphold her family's legacy of saving and protecting others. The next day, as Scratch practices reciting her departure speech to her crystal collection, Sonic observes the local youth baseball playoffs at the Academy's baseball field and sees a young baseball batter high-five his teammates. That night, Sonic goes into the vacant baseball field and plays by himself, using his speed to assume the roles of all the players. He manages to make a perfect play and rejoices, holding his hand up for a high-five, but when he looks around and sees that no one is there to cheer him on, he realizes he is truly alone forever despite his friends in Skylands. In his despair, he tries to work off the pain by running desperately around the field, but his sadness only turns to anger and frustration at his situation, his emotions building and causing electricity to emit from his body. Eventually, it becomes too much and he lets loose an anguished scream, the energy within him exploding outward into a massive electromagnetic pulse that knocks out power across the entire Northwest of Skylands. Immediately after, Sonic becomes worried that he may have just revealed himself with his outburst and dashes off, hoping no one noticed. Meanwhile, much to the contrary, Ka-Boom is left to deal with several phone calls to the Skylanders' main base, as the town is completely in the dark. Concerned, he contacts Scar, who starts to give him instructions but ends the call prematurely when he sees the quill he recovered earlier glowing with an electric blue light.
News of the event soon reaches the Skylands' Military base: the Pentagon, and Commander Buzz of Defense enlists the help of brilliant roboticist and scientific genius named Dr. Krankcase, to discover the cause; in spite of everyone disliking his egotistical and unorthodox nature, he is the best man for the job. After Dr. Krankcase and his partner, Hood Sickle, take charge of the military detachment stationed at the baseball field, Dr. Krankcase's flying, high-tech, egg-shaped drones head into the forest, where one of them finds a footprint from Sonic and scans it; Dr. Krankcase discovers that his computer can't find a single match in Skylands' animal and creature kingdom to identify the creature responsible for the print, a fact that catches his interest. As the military troops and the drones search the forest for him, Sonic, realizing that he had just blown his cover, rushes back to his secret cave to collect his valuables and prepares to leave Skylands forever as he makes a note about his departure to his friends and foster family. But just before he can use the Rings to save himself, the troops and drones draw close to his cave and Sonic flees to avoid them, sentimentally bidding goodbye to his cave.
Meanwhile, Scratch is on the phone with Stealth Elf, who has flown out with Eruptor to the academy to check out the academy's area before considering to apply there, as well as to visit Eon and Hugo. As Scratch tells Stealth Elf about the blackout, Spyro hears a disturbance and sees Scratch's trash can toppled over. Thinking the raccoons are back, Scar takes Stealth Elf's tranquilizer gun, ends the call abruptly and goes out to investigate the shed, despite Scratch's pleas on not to use it out of worry that the elf will not be pleased if Scar actually uses it. The noise turns out to be Sonic, who broke into the shed so he would have a safe place to use one of his Rings. As he prepares to do so, Scar, Spyro and Scratch burst into the shed and sees him. The four of them are surprised at this but Scar accidentally fires a dart into Sonic's leg when Spyro crashes into him after tripping on a fallen tree branch. Sonic sees a picture of the Academy's Grand Library on a poster in the shed and as he drops his Ring, it opens a portal above the actual building itself. Collapsing to the floor, Sonic accidentally drops the bag of Rings into the portal and it lands on the building's roof. The portal thusly closes as Sonic passes out, leaving Scar severely confused at everything that just transpired as Scratch and Spyro are baffled on what had happened.
Shortly after, Spyro and the feathercats bring Sonic inside and place him on the table. Spyro compares Sonic to the quill that Scar found and the three realize that Sonic is the Blue Devil, confirming that Gusto was right. When Sonic awakens, he sits up from the table and both he and Scar have their first real long father-son conversation. Scar asks Sonic what he was doing and why he was hiding in his garage. Sonic explains that he needed to be somewhere safe and considered Scar the only person he could turn to. Just then, Dr. Krankcase's truck arrives. Explaining that he is unable to simply run away because his legs are weak from the lingering tranquilizer (which is meant for creatures such as bears), Sonic begs for Scar, Spyro and Scratch to protect him from the people coming after him, describing the situation as "life or death." This wording is what convinces Scar, Spyro and a reluctant Scratch to help, as she was initially unwilling to get involved with the matter. Scar hides the children in the attic as he goes out to meet Dr. Krankcase, who inconspicuously dispatches his drones to search the house while the two talk outside. Sonic, Spyro and Scratch hide from the drones and Sonic curls up into a ball to hide among the various sports balls stored in the attic as Scratch and Spyro hide in boxes, but when the drones get too close, Sonic, in a panicked state, flees the attic and causes noise as Scratch and Spyro chase after him while avoiding the drones. Dr. Krankcase barges into the house to find only a raccoon eating a cake that Scar had baked for his daughter to celebrate her acceptance letter. As he turns to leave, however, he discovers the quill. When Dr. Krankcase threatens Scar to reveal where Sonic is, Sonic shows himself and begs Dr. Krankcase to spare Scar, eliciting a terrified scream from Dr. Krankcase. Seizing the opportunity, Scar slashes Dr. Krankcase with his gauntlets' claws and knocks him out, and after a skirmish with one of Dr. Krankcase's drones that was used in threatening Scar, he, Scratch, Spyro and Sonic escape the house, driving away in Scar's jet plane. Hood Sickle arrives to check on Dr. Krankcase, who scolds him for failing to stop them, states their objective of capturing Sonic for examination, and tells him to bring the quill.
With Sonic, Spyro, Scratch and Scar now on the run, an aghast Spyro asks Sonic to explain himself of what had happened in the shed; Sonic informs him of the purpose of his lost Rings-- "advanced cultures" use Rings to travel to different worlds—and adds that therefore, he needs to get to the academy so he can get them back and escape to the Mushroom Planet. The story proves too bizarre for Scratch to believe and also feeling betrayed that her foster brother had secretly been lying to her, her friends and family this entire time, she forces her father to pull over and tells Sonic to go there by himself, explaining that this is a bad time for her, Scar and Spyro to end up in trouble and citing that she has accomplished what Sonic asked him to do: save his life. However, Sonic does not know where Skylander Academy is and following Scratch's directions to simply head west only causes him to crash straight into the Northern Ocean and run back to Spyro and the feathercats; wet, cold, covered in seaweed, and wearing a fish on his head. Angered at his friend's refusal to help Sonic, Spyro states that it's not only Scar's fault, but also her and Spyro's fault for Sonic's fate because of the fact that they were all responsible for making him lose his Rings in the first place and Sonic agrees with him by insisting that he can't accomplish his goal alone. Reluctantly, Scratch agrees to allow her father to take Sonic with them to the academy.
As the group begin their travels, Sonic treats the journey as a fun road trip; he admires the attractions along the way, such as The World's Largest Rubber Ball, barely paying any mind to Scratch admonishing him for not taking the trouble they, Spyro and Scar are in seriously. That night, they stop at a certain section of town and Scar tells the children to stay in the truck as he uses a nearby payphone to call Ka-Boom, who reveals that Dr. Krankcase and his agents are searching for Scar, Spyro and Scratch and are with him in the station. Dr. Krankcase takes the phone and warns Scar that he is coming for him, stating how infuriated he is with Scar for punching him in the face due to it being a remainder of a similar situation regarding a bully in his childhood that he had solved through technology. Afterwards, he leaves with the agents, with Ka-Boom warning him that he will inform people about this incident. Meanwhile, seeing Scratch feeling terrible for her behavior towards Sonic, the blue hedgehog decides to take her to an extremely entertaining-looking biker bar. Spyro is at first reluctant to go, but he caves in when Sonic states it will help Scratch feel better.
Scar comes back to his truck with a purchased meal, only to find Sonic, Scratch and Spyro missing. He finds them in the Piston Pit across the street and orders them out, but Sonic, who has disguised himself, Scratch and Spyro to blend in and stay hidden, persuades him to stay and have fun with them to cheer Scratch up as she felt terrible for being rude to Sonic upon realizing that he never meant any harm, causing Scar to relent after hearing his foster son out. With that, the four take a while to enjoy themselves with all the bar's activities, mending Sonic's bond with Scratch as they forgive each other for their shortcomings. Unfortunately, a group of rough-looking punks come looking for trouble and Scratch, in an attempt to protect them, aggravates their leader the Roadhouse Thug, starting a bar fight. The leader of the punks smacks Scratch away and attacks Sonic, but the blue hedgehog speeds up his awareness and runs around the bar, saving Scar, Spyro and Scratch from their attackers and setting up sassy pranks and traps to end the fight, all in the span of the single moment before the punk leader can reach him. The fight ends abruptly by Sonic's devices and the punk leader crashes through the window wearing a wall-mounted bear head. Sonic, Spyro and the feathercats flee the bar, outrunning and out-flying the angry patrons.
The two then spend the night in a local motel and after Sonic runs around the room enjoying himself with various activities, Scar asks him about this other planet to which he must go when he leaves Earth. Sonic reveals his past to Spyro, Scratch and Scar of how he came to Skylands and that the Mushroom Planet is a very unenviable place and wonders aloud about whether Longclaw might have been wrong, pondering the possibility of having an actual life in Skylands; he falls asleep not long after with Spyro and Scratch cuddling him. As Scar tucks the three in, he sees that one of the remaining items on Sonic's bucket list is to "find a real home". At that moment, he hears a news report that features a warning about him, as he has been declared a domestic terrorist because of his actions in protecting Sonic from Dr. Krankcase and the military.
The next morning, Dr. Krankcase and Hood Sickle have arrived at the Piston Pit, which is under repairs from the bar fight, to interrogate the bar patrons, including the injured punk leader (who gets thrown through the same window as last night for being stubborn about giving up information); they learn that Sonic, Spyro, Scar and Scratch are heading to the academy. Dr. Krankcase triangulates their location and gives chase.
On the road, Sonic asks Scratch about what she would have on her own bucket list. Saddened, Scratch reveals her intentions to attend the academy and prove herself as a hero like her father, but Sonic is baffled and angered by the fact that Scratch would want to leave behind her friends when a shocked Spyro realizes that only Scratch got an acceptance letter and not him, Stealth Elf or Eruptor, meaning Scratch will be alone. Sonic argues that unlike himself, Scratch has no villains chasing her, as well as pointing out that her father and friends depend on her to help them with any problems they have when she responds by saying they could call anyone else for help, to which Scar agrees on; much to Scratch's surprise. Simultaneously, Dr. Krankcase finds them and sends out a large 6-wheeled Badnik to attack them.
A battle on the road ensues and Sonic, Spyro and the feathercats work together to destroy the machine, despite Sonic's disdain for Scratch's ambitions occasionally showing—in particular, one moment at the beginning of the fight where Sonic's electrical powers kick in again as he continues to emotionally call Scratch out for choosing to leave her "perfect" life in spite of the danger they are in, drawing a parallel between it to his own experience of being forced to leave his home and all that he loved; said powers are used to their advantage against the machine via a subsequent (and involuntary) supercharged spin attack from Sonic; but a pattern emerges where every time the four think they have defeated the machine, Dr. Krankcase activates another, smaller phase to continue the chase.
The second-to-last phase of the machine involves it becoming a small drone and shearing the hood off of Scar's jet with a laser beam. After they deal with this phase, the machine is reduced to a sticky bomb that attaches itself to Spyro's paw when he tries to swat it away and they pull off the road to get rid of it. But just when Sonic manages to transfer it to a rock and starts to walk away to high-five the three, it explodes with Sonic still close by. As the smoke clears, Scar, Scratch and Spyro find Sonic lying unconscious on the ground and run over to him, attempting to get him to wake up. At his truck base, Dr. Krankcase is infuriated that they survived and berates Hood Sickle for noting their persistence. At that moment, however, Dr. Krankcase finds that the quill in Hood Sickle's pocket is glowing with blue, electric light and is intrigued.
Finally reaching the academy's borders; namely the cadet housing area, Scar, Spyro and Scratch rush to the house where Stealth Elf and Eruptor are temporarily staying at with Hugo and Eon as Scar carries Sonic, who Spyro had wrapped in a towel to conceal the hedgehog. They are greeted by Hugo, who has seen the news reports on him and refuses to let them in until Stealth Elf intervenes. Eon, Eruptor and a then-unadopted lamb named Cotton (Stealth Elf had taken her with her on her and Eruptor's trip), come to greet the trio, and as Eon and Hugo argue about Scar's actions, Cotton pulls away the towel despite Spyro's best efforts to keep her away from it, revealing Sonic. Hugo faints at the sight of Sonic's unconscious state as Stealth Elf, Eruptor and Eon just stare in shock.
Meanwhile, Dr. Krankcase analyzes the quill and the energy it contains. As he waits, he amuses himself by dancing to a tune until he is startled half to death by the sudden - and completely unexpected - appearance of Hood Sickle, who has come to offer a latte. At that moment, the machine finishes analyzing the quill, revealing it to contain unlimited energy—energy that Dr. Krankcase believes can enable his prototype flying craft, the Eggpod, to reach its full potential.
At the house, Stealth Elf tends to Sonic, while Hugo sits bound in a chair to prevent him from interfering. Scar's reason for bringing Sonic here was to have Eon and Stealth Elf check on him and figure out what is wrong with him using Stealth Elf's medical experience during her ninja training upon Scratch's recommendation, but the elf insists she only knows how to work with Skylands' creatures and Sonic's alien biology is beyond her understanding. Instead, she uses smelling salts from a first aid kit to awaken Sonic, who zips around the room at breathtaking speed before frantically coming to grips with his surroundings and enthusiastically greeting his friends. Pulling Scar and the others into another room, Eon asks him what Sonic's powers were and Scar asks him if he and the others remember what Gusto always says, causing Eon and Stealth Elf to realize that the Blue Devil is real and was actually Sonic all along. Spyro explains that he accidentally made Scar shoot Sonic with Stealth Elf's tranquilizer gun (to the elf's annoyance at the boys' actions) and that he, Scar and Scratch have to help Sonic get to the roof of the Grand Library. Eon and Stealth Elf ultimately accept their friends' situation without much issue, recalling that a Skylander's mission is to help people in danger and reasoning that "blue alien hedgehogs still count as people." Simultaneously, Eruptor returns from a short trip upstairs to bring Sonic a new pair of bright red and white shoes that were originally meant for Stealth Elf as a birthday gift but he had accidentally gotten the size wrong and was planning to throw them away but then decided to give them to Sonic so that the hedgehog's feet will no longer hurt when he runs, having noticed while he was unconscious that his old shoes were well-worn out and had holes down to the socks from all of his running; Sonic takes an instant liking to the new shoes, especially since no one had ever given him a such thoughtful gift before and immediately puts them on. Sonic also meets Cotton, of whom he is jealous (Spyro had once referred to the sheep as his "favorite animal friend" in a conversation that took place just before the discovery of Sonic's powers, much to Sonic's chagrin), but from whom he enjoys an affectionate face-nuzzling.
Deciding that they can no longer use Scar's damaged jet as it would draw attention to them, Scar, Spyro, Stealth Elf, Scratch and Eruptor borrow Hugo's plane and head with Sonic (who drives the plane with disastrous results) to the Academy, where Scar unlocks the doors of the Grand Library with a key that Eon had given him earlier to reach the roof from the inside since flying up there would incite suspicions. They finally reach the roof, where Sonic at last finds and retrieves his bag of Rings. Sonic briefly explains how the Rings work: the user has to think of the desired destination as they throw one and the location will be shown upon expansion once the ring reaches a fair amount of distance. He takes the opportunity to apologize to Scratch for harshly and hastily judging her decision to become a Skylander cadet, having realized that it was a difficult choice, and states that while he does not want to leave Skylands, he will only put others in danger by staying. Sonic and the residents of Skylands all admit that they will miss the other and Sonic expresses his gratitude for the good times they had over the past 10 years and two days; he also thanks Scar for saving his life and taking care of him. Sonic attempts to throw a Ring to open the portal to the Mushroom Planet, but it ends up uselessly bouncing off of one of Dr. Krankcase's drones. Many more drones surround them as Dr. Krankcase himself appears in his Eggpod, now containing Sonic's quill, to meet them. After a brief exchange between Scar and Dr. Krankcase, Spyro taunts Dr. Krankcase by calling him "Eggman" after his egg-shaped drones. Dr. Krankcase readies his drones to blow them away, but in an impromptu plan to protect Eruptor since he doesn't possess superspeed, flight or teleportation and is thus vulnerable to Dr. Krankcase's coming onslaught despite his lava powers, Sonic pushes the lava golem on Scar's back and the feathercat leaps off of the top of the building as Stealth Elf quickly joins in to provide protection by hopping on Scar back mid-jump.
Briefly showing shock at what just happened (but refusing to fully acknowledge said shock), Dr. Krankcase has his drones fire missiles and bullets at Sonic, who speeds up his awareness and as Spyro and Scratch do the same thanks to their previous training with Sonic just before the onslaught makes contact and casually pushes the ones in front of them aside, then repeatedly grabs more missiles out of the air and either redirects them back into several of the drones or plays around with them, all in the span of milliseconds. But in the middle of this, Dr. Krankcase still has enough time to press a button that charges the Eggpod with energy from the quill, allowing it-- and by extension, himself-- to move and react just as fast. He fires a blast at Sonic, Spyro and Scratch that they only narrowly avoid, the shockwave knocking them out of bullet time and into momentary delirium; quickly recovering from this to find Scar's wing hit from the attack, causing him, Stealth Elf and Eruptor to begin falling, Sonic grabs one of the Rings falling with him by using one of his quills as a reach extender and throws it, opening a portal beneath them that transports them back to the town near Scar's home. Scar, Stealth Elf and Eruptor end up landing safely in a pile of hay within a lava monster farmer's barn, while back at the academy' premises, Sonic, Spyro and Scratch land in a tree before crashing to the ground, along with the rest of the Rings and Dr. Krankcase's destroyed drones. Meanwhile, the owner of the barn (Eruptor's mother) is surprised at the sight of her guests, to which they apologize for the sudden arrival. Despite that, she is glad Eruptor's here because she needs his help in aiding a cow's effort to give birth.
Dr. Krankcase confronts Sonic, Spyro and Scratch and taunts them, but Sonic gathers up his spilled Rings and runs through the area with Scratch and Spyro flying beside him as Dr. Krankcase gives chase in the Eggpod, as seen at the beginning of the film. Narrating again, Sonic, Spyro and Scratch note to Pop and Jet-Vac how this has brought the story full circle and earnestly continues from where they, Stealth Elf and Eruptor left off, wanting to know what happens next just as much as the audience does. As Dr. Krankcase continues his pursuit, Sonic is shocked by his ability to keep up with him, as no one has ever done that before, which makes Spyro realize that Dr. Krankcase took the quill that Scar had in his possession back at the house.
With this in mind, Sonic opens a portal to Motleyville, with him, Scratch, Spyro and Dr. Krankcase disrupting a Kangarat mime act being performed for a young Dirtk girl as they rush past them. His next Ring portal brings him and the doctor to Rainfish Riveria, where the latter chases the trio along the islands of the storming sea. Next, Sonic opens a portal to the Golden Desert, where Dr. Krankcase destroys many centuries-old monuments in his zeal to catch Sonic. Spyro then decides to have Sonic use his speed to create a sand tornado that temporarily disrupts Dr. Krankcase's visual contact as Scratch and Spyro help out by keeping to tornado from spreading by flying around it, but Dr. Krankcase sees Sonic running up the side of one of the Great Pyramids with the fliers in tow and follows them to the top, firing a blast just as Sonic manages to open another portal Ring.
The portal brings Sonic, Scratch and Spyro back to Campus Town, now at night, but the blast sends them hurtling through the Ring and into the street, leaving them barely able to move from a combination of the chase and their injuries. Dr. Krankcase's Eggpod slowly emerges through the portal, and the terrified onlookers flee as Scar, Stealth Elf and Eruptor arrive on the scene. As Sonic collapses to the ground entirely while Scratch and Spyro do their best to try and stand up, Dr. Krankcase prepares to finish them off, but Stealth Elf uses one of Sonic's Rings to get behind him and engage him in physical combat inside the open cockpit of his vehicle, landing multiple punches on him in order to throw off his focus and protect her friends. Unfortunately, she is ultimately hurled out of the cockpit as Eruptor catches her, leaving Dr. Krankcase to question why the elf ninja and lava monster would be willing to throw their lives away for a "silly little alien." With his attention now focused on Stealth Elf and Eruptor as Scar and Scratch approach them, he once again prepares to strike but is thrown off a second time by Ka-Boom and Snap Shot, joined by Gusto, wielding a chainsaw (who is all too willing to point out to everyone that this is concrete proof of the "Blue Devil" being a real creature and not a figment of his imagination) and some of the local townspeople in defending the young ones. However, Scratch draws her father's attention back to Sonic; he remains motionless and silent, appearing to everyone as if he had lost his life even as Spyro tries to his best to awaken the blue hedgehog. Dr. Krankcase insensitively requests putting Sonic's body on ice to keep it fresh and callously remarks that he was just an alien who did not belong in Skylands. With restrained anger, Scar helps Spyro come to his side and responds by telling him that Sonic knew more about being a resident of Skylands than he ever will, proclaiming him to have been more than his friend: his son.
Shortly after the statement, Sonic, who had only been dazed by Dr. Krankcase's attack, opens his eyes and gets to his feet, his body supercharged with electric energy—some of which he siphons from the quill powering the Eggpod, returning it to its normal speed. Scar, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf, Eruptor and the townspeople step back, allowing Sonic to handle things and take care of Dr. Krankcase; fueled by passion, Sonic boldly proclaims to Dr. Krankcase that he will no longer use the power which is rightfully his to run away, but will use it to protect his friends. Dr. Krankcase pulls down his goggles and the two opponents become locked in a standoff, preparing to meet in full-on battle. Dr. Krankcase makes the first move by firing his missiles, but Sonic avoids them and bounces off the buildings to strike Dr. Krankcase's Eggpod with an increasingly rapid barrage of body-slams. With the vehicle severely damaged, but still afloat, Sonic declares that he is not the one leaving Earth and calls for Eruptor, who throws a Ring behind Dr. Robotnik that creates a portal to the Mushroom Planet. Then, at last, Sonic dashes straight at Dr. Krankcase's vehicle and strikes it with a final spin attack that exerts enough force to send it flying backwards through the portal just as it closes, stranding Dr. Krankcase on the Mushroom Planet so that he can never hurt anyone again.
With the fight over, the electricity arcing from Sonic's body fades, and he returns to his normal state as the townspeople cheer for him. Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Eruptor and Stealth Elf reunite and congratulate each other on getting rid of Dr. Krankcase together, and Eruptor returns Sonic's Rings (though not before telling him not to push people off buildings anymore, which Sonic can't promise), with Scar giving Sonic the high-five he had wanted since the baseball game, much to the latter's sheer delight. Spyro, however, is soon horrified to realize that he and his friends left Hugo tied to the chair at the academy dorms and states they can never go back. Scratch is fine with that, telling her father that she has decided not to become a Skylander anyway, since she has already saved a life. As Ka-Boom and Snap Shot disperse the crowd of townspeople, Sonic follows Scar and Scratch, their familial bond now stronger than ever. However, Eon arrives and gives Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor acceptance letters to the academy as repayment for saving Skylands from Krankcase, even Sonic receives one and instead of denying it; he takes Scar's earlier advice and accepts the letter, now wishing to use his powers for good and realizing that by being a hero, he can have people alongside him to protect his powers.
The next day, as Scar and Scratch are repairing and repainting their house from the damage caused by Dr. Krankcase's drone, Commander Buzz comes to thank Scar for not speaking publicly about the events of the past few days and to inform him that his guilt has been erased; he also denies that Dr. Krankcase ever existed when cratch gs him up, which he wishes aloud was true. As a bonus, the official presents Scar with an Olive Garden gift card, then asks if Sonic might be willing to talk to the governing leaders of Skylands, but Scar falsely claims that Sonic has left so as to spare him that and politely bid him goodbye as they close their door in front of Buzz, who tries peeking inside their house all the while in a last-ditch effort to see if he is lying.
After Buzz leaves, Sonic comes out of hiding and asks if they would like to watch a movie, but Scar tells him that it is time to go back to his cave. Disappointed and annoyed, Sonic heads for the front door, assuming he meant the hedgehog's old cave, but Scar implies to his son that he meant something else. Scar and Scratch open a door to one of the guest bedrooms so that Sonic can look inside; he is astonished to find that one of the guest bedrooms have been turned into a room for him that contains all of his belongings from the old cave. Overcome with joy, Sonic runs around and relishes in having his things back. Scar and Scratch sit with Sonic on his race car bed and welcome him home and Sonic gives them his heartfelt thanks as Spyro, Stealth Elf and Eruptor pay a visit to check out Sonic's new room. As the view zooms out and away from the house, Cotton comes to nuzzle Sonic again, with Sonic still jealous of her but enjoys the display of affection.
In the present day, after Spyro, Sonic, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor finish their story about their all-around Skylands adventure, Scratch decides to climb to the top of the tree near the team's house and roar over the islands. As she did so, the storm that had happened during the tale clears up and she can see Scar's spirit in the clouds, who roars alongside her at her success in moving on from his death and achieving her wish of becoming a hero. When Jet-Vac states his worries about Dr. Krankcase's potential return to Skylands, Spyro states that it would be impossible without a Ring.
Meanwhile, nearly three months later on the Mushroom Planet; around the time of Skylanders Unite!, Dr. Krankcase has completely lost his sanity, despite his belief that he has never done so. As he finishes shaving himself totally bald with a piece of metal from his destroyed Eggpod, he gazes at his reflection in a pool of water, now with an extremely long, grown-out mustache that looks completely zany. Talking to a rock that he has been carved to resemble Hood Sickle, he throws it and tells it to perform "rock-connaissance" for him. He reflects on his situation and remarks that a lesser man would die in such a place. But then, he holds up a small container with Sonic's quill inside it, proclaiming that he will be "home by Christmas", then continues to explore and toss the Hood Sickle rock around, laughing maniacally.
A mid credits scene shows forested hills in an area near the academy within five more months; sometime after Season 1. There, the leaves stir as a Ring portal opens. From it emerges an anthropomorphic two-tailed fox who uses a small handheld device to determine from the present levels of energy whether Sonic might be near. Finding the readings to be sufficient, Tails hopes aloud that he is not too late in finding him and uses his twin tails like helicopter blades to take off flying into the vast islands towards the academy's premises.

- Spyro, Scratch, Sonic, Stealth Elf and Eruptor tell Pop Fizz and Jet-Vac about their adventure with Scratch's father; Scar, before his untimely death.
- It is revealed that Sonic is an extraterrestrial being resembling a hedgehog who wound up in Skylands as a child when a tribe of echidna warriors attack his home and was adopted into Scar's family after the adult feathercat was overcome with sympathy upon hearing that he was lost from his home planet, making Sonic Scratch's adoptive older brother.
- Scar tried to get Sonic to apply to Skylanders Academy but it was denied out of Sonic's fear of his powers being misused by evil.
- In the past, Scratch received an application letter to study at the academy before Spyro, Stealth Elf and Eruptor did but she ultimately decided to forgo it after defeating Krankcase and saving Skylands with the help of her friends.
- However, Eon gives her, Spyro, Stealth Elf, Eruptor and Sonic acceptance letters after Krankcase's defeat and banishment. This time, Sonic decided to attend with his friends after seeing that he can use his powers for good and can have people beside him to protect his powers.
- Scratch roars to her father's spirit to let him know about her success in moving on from his death and achieving her wish of becoming a hero in Skylanders Unite!.
- Krankcase begins plotting his revenge on Sonic and his friends.
- An anthropomorphic two-tailed fox named Tails arrives in Skylands sometime after Season 1.
- The film takes place before Missing Links and after My Way or the Sky Way, as Jet-Vac has begun truly settling into Sonic, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf and Eruptor's school home.
- Upon Scar's physical debut, the film reveals that a majority of feathercats are of Hispanic descent, explaining Spyro and Sonic's occasional bilingualism as they learned it from their time with Scratch and Scar.
- Eon's long beard makes a brief comeback in the story before he actually regains it in the series finale.
- Spyro is revealed to own a female sheep (a ewe) named Cotton, where in the story, she was a lamb who was unadopted at the time and her adoption is explained in Dream Girls.
- Eruptor's mother makes a cameo appearance in the film after her debut in Skylanders Unite!, where she attended Scar's birthday anniversary party alongside her husband and daughters.
- This also reveals that Eruptor's family are farmers.

Trivia[]
- The golden leaf hair clip that Stealth Elf wears throughout the film and in Season 1 foreshadows Tails' appearance during the mid credits scene, as well as his appearance in Sonic X Skylanders 2: Quest for the Emerald.
- In the story, Spyro does not have his scar, foreshadowing that he got it during his admissions test in the flashback in Skylanders Unite!.
- The tiara that Scratch wore in her debut episode is revealed to have been bronze before it got rusted over the years.
- Antonio Banderas replaces Josh Robert Thompson as Scar's voice for the films, this reveals that the feathercats in the series are of Hispanic descent such as Spain.
- Dr. Krankcase, Hood Sickle, Gusto and Buzz take the role of Dr. Robotnik, Agent Stone, Crazy Carl and Commander Walters in the canon series.
- Spyro owning a sheep named Cotton is a reference to the original Spyro the Dragon series, where they serve as one of many varieties of "fodder" for the dragon to restore his health.
- Sonic meeting Spyro, Scratch and Scar is a reference to how Mufasa meets Taka and Eshe from Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King.
- Ironically, Taka is later called Scar near the end of the film. However, Scar the lion is antagonist while Scar the feathercat is a protagonist.
- The way how Spyro's group explain the tale is in fact used from the plot of the aforementioned film.
- Scratch roaring at her father's spirit is a reference to Kiara roaring at Mufasa's spirit at the near-end of the aforementioned film.
- The younger selves to Spyro, Stealth Elf and Eruptor resemble their game counterparts' Mini/Sidekick forms; Spry, Whisper Elf and Weeruptor.
- There would've been a scene for the film where Dr. Krankcase had a coffee maker named Mean Bean Machine (item) after the game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine but it was cut from the final film. Instead, this reference was incorporated into the film's sequel as the Mean Bean Coffee Café (location) where Hood Sickle works following Dr. Krankcase's defeat in the first film.
- The film itself uses some elements originating from the Early Sonic canon, such as naming Sonic's initial planet "Mobius", introducing the doctor as "Krankcase" first, and having Sonic receive his shoes as a gift from someone.
- Speed, which was the movie that Sonic sees Scratch and Scar are watching at the start of the film, was also referenced through a poster to promote Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.
- Sonic's Super form was supposed to appear in the film, according to early drafts of the script. However, the transformation was cut. The reason for it was because it did not make any sense to be included this early and because the film wanted to primarily focus more onto the origins of Sonic and Dr. Krankcase's relationship before introducing the other elements.
- The Chaos Emeralds were also once planned for the film, but were cut for the same reason as Super Sonic's.
- In the film's story, Sonic spends most of his screen-time wearing worn-out mismatched shoes while his present day counterpart wears his red sneakers. However, his past self would receive his signature red sneakers at around two-thirds into the film's story.
- In this film's story, Longclaw, Spyro, Scratch, Stealth Elf, Eruptor, Eon and Scar were the only characters who referred to Sonic by his name, and Sonic and his siblings were always referring to Dr. Krankcase as Eggman.
- Throughout the film, Dr. Krankcase said that he was an orphan. This indicates that his parents passed away or abandoned him when he was younger.
- Sonic states that Keanu Reeves is a national treasure. Perhaps ironically, Keanu Reeves would go on to voice Shadow the Hedgehog in the fourth film.
