Smurfs: The 2nd Part is a 2021 American 3D computer-animated comedy film and it's a sequel to the 2017 film Smurfs: The Lost Village. It is based on The Smurfs comic book series created by the Belgian comics artist by Peyo, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Kerner Entertainment Company, with animation provided by Mikros Image. It is directed by Mike Mitchell and written by Michael Colton and Brandon Sawyer and stars the voices of Demi Lovato as Smurfette, with Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, along with Laura Marano, Ross Lynch, Jack McBrayer, Danny Pudi, Gabriel Iglesias, Gordon Ramsay, and more.

The plot follows Smurfette (Lovato) being transported to the enchanted world, and Papa (Mandy Patinkin) and the other Smurfs must find her before Gargamel does. Smurfette also meets two enchanted Smurfs from the world, named Smurf Kelly (Marano) and Mighty Smurf (Lynch), who eventually befriend her.

Smurfs: The 2nd Part was released by Sony Pictures on July 27, 2021 in RealD 3D and Dolby Cinema formats and on July 28, 2021 internationally by Sony Pictures Releasing International. Smurfs: The 2nd Part was dedicated to Kelly Asbury who directed the film, until his death on June 26, 2020. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, praising its animation, plot, voice cast (particularly Lovato, Marano and Lynch), musical score by Christopher Lennertz and humor, though some criticized the runtime. It was also a box office success, grossing $286.3 million against a production budget $80 million.

Storyline[]

It's been two years since Smurfette (Demi Lovato) defeated the evil wizard, Gargamel (Rainn Wilson) and his cat Azrael, and all Smurfs from the lost village in the forbidden forest now lives with the Smurfs from the village in the normal forest. However, when Smurfette's been transported to the enchanted world, Papa (Mandy Patinkin) and the Smurfs must find Smurfette before Gargamel does. Along the way, Smurfette meets two enchanted Smurfs named Smurf Kelly (Laura Marano) and Mighty Smurf (Ross Lynch).

Smurfs: The 2nd Part had much delayed releases. With a planned release of May 3, 2019, Sony Pictures pushed the release date up to December 6, 2019. The film was pushed up again to a release date of July 10, 2020, but was evidently pushed up further to a release date of July 27, 2021. The film debuted out of competition at the 74th Cannes Film Festival on July 7, 2021 in Cannes, France and premiered at the Dolby Theatre on July 20, 2021, and was theatrically released in the United States on July 27, 2021 by Sony Pictures Releasing.

Home media[]

Smurfs: The 2nd Part was released on DVD and Blu-ray on November 19, 2021 and on Digital on November 20. The DVD and Blu-ray contained a behind-the-scenes featurette, a casting session with Demi Lovato, an interview with the cast and crew, including composer Christopher Lennertz, and a Mr. Blue Sky exclusive animated music video, with performers Electric Light Orchestra included. Additionally, an animated music video for Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP's "We No Speak Americano" was featured in the special features.

Smurfs: The 2nd Part was theatrically released on July 27, 2021 in the United States and on July 28, 2021 internationally. The film grossed $88.1 million in the United States and Canada and $198.2 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $286.3 million.

United States and Canada[]

Smurfs: The 2nd Part debuted with $15.3 million in its opening weekend in the United States and Canada, with an additional $2.48 million in Friday night previews. It went on to gross $23.6 million in its first opening week, peaking at #4 at the domestic box office. It then grossed $6.73 in its second opening weekend, with an additional $1.39 million, dropping by 1.5%. Its second week of projections were dropped by 1.2%, grossing $17.8 million. In its third opening weekend, it increased by 0.85%, grossing $8.25 million, and then made $12.6 million in its third opening week, dropping by 0.52%.

Other territories[]

In other territories, Smurfs: The 2nd Part's highest sales were the United Kingdom ($49.5 million), Germany ($48.3 million), Ireland ($28.5 million), South Korea ($26.2 million), Japan ($20.3 million), Russia ($15.7 million) and France ($9.7 million).

Box office projections concluded on March 12, 2022, for a total of $88.1 million in the United States and Canada, and $198.2 million in other territories.

Critical response[]

Reception towards Smurfs: The 2nd Part were mostly positive. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports an approval rating of 72% based on reviews from 185 critics, with an average rating of 6.35/10. Its critical consensus reads, "Beautifully animated, with a talented voice cast and introducing a couple of new characters, Smurfs: The 2nd Part is sure to bring laughs to kids and young adults alike." On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 67 out of 100, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore assigned the film an average grade of "B+" on its A+ to F scale.
