The show premiered on August 22, 2025, with it's first season scheduled to finish on February 28, 2026. The second season is scheduled to premiere on May 28, 2026 and end on January 15, 2027.

Overall[]

A[]

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Up until "Dreaming of Her," Kelce is in love with Aeron. While he seemingly shows some feelings for her, he reveals to Skylar he actually thinks Kelce is a creep. After he finds out Kelce catfished him online as Leah (his actual crush), his dislike for her increases further, and the celebrity's crush on him drops soon after.
  • Actor Allusion:
  • All Just a Dream: In "The Artistic Liberty," it's revealed Skylar traveling to the Furyverse and helping save the Nevercrossed Lands was this. When she finds out, she acts as expected.

Skylar: So, you're telling me that was all just a dream?
    Lily: Yep.
    Skylar: (disappointed) Crud.

  • Ambiguous Syntax: In "Candy Hearts," Skylar says the Hunters will hit Morgan where it hurts. Lily responds with this:

Lily: But, girls don't have groins.
(The others give her a weird look, and Leah facepalms herself.)

  • And I'm the Queen of Sheba: When Kelce and Aeron meet for the first time, the following exchange occurs when Kelce brings up being a Hollywood star.

Kelce: I'm Kelce Rivera. I'm actually a really big Hollywood actress, you know.
Aeron: (sarcastically) Yeah, and I'm Tom Cruise.

  • Anthropomorphic Food: Or rather, food monster. Sprinkles is a monster made entirely out of Baker's Delight-infused cupcake batter.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: "Story of My Life, Part 1" has two examples of this.
    • In the first example, Skylar is working on the premiere episode of Scarlet Fury past her bedtime. While she is writing a vampire guard's line, stating Scarlet is in major trouble, Alicia enters the room and finds Skylar awake.

Vampire Guard #1: Well, dear princess, it seems the saying, "you can run, but you can't hide," has proven itself correct. And once we bring you straight to Prince Toranus, you will be...
(Before the guard finishes his line, Alicia's voice interrupts the scene.)
      Alicia: (angry) Skylar!
(In the real world, Skylar stops drawing once she hears Alicia's voice.)
      Skylar: (deadpan) Dead.

    • In the second example, Alicia is commenting that they'll get to the school in time as long as they don't run into traffic. Before she can finish, Skylar points something out.

Skylar: (panicked, pointing ahead) Look out!
(Alicia and Kelce scream. Alicia presses the breaks hard, and the whiplash causes Kelce to smear her lipstick on her face. Skylar smirks, as Kelce gives an annoyed look. Alicia looks ahead with an annoyed expression.)
      Alicia: (annoyed) Traffic.

B[]

  • Beauty Contest: Every year, New Ember holds one of these. In "The Crowning Moment," Lily, Kelce, and the Neat Names take part in the 26th annual Little Miss New Ember pageant, but what no one knows is that the host wants to create a bug monster army out of the contestants, who will in turn eat the audience members-turned-frogs.
  • Becoming the Costume: The "Fogramsytir Umetsco" spell has the ability to turn someone who is wearing a costume into said costume. When Kaitlynn Turner arrives at the Michelle Watson Academy Halloween party, she turns everyone who is wearing a costume (excluding the Hunters and Viera) into her army.
  • Big Eater: Both Lily and Ghrel are this. The latter is a bigger eater than the former, and is often seen eating in most of his appearances.

Sonora: Lily's just like a raccoon. She'll eat just about anything!
Skylar: Is that a part of her powers?
Sonora: Nope. Just one of the many unique things about her. Disgusting at times, but unique.

  • Bounty Hunter:
    • As Barbara Huntington, Foona pretended to be this. However, she is still a masterful hunter, and comes close to killing Sonora.
    • In the Furyverse, the Huntress is this, being noted as the best of her craft.
  • Bribe Backfire: In "Kick Back and Kick Butt," Aeron attempts to bribe Julie to get him and the Hunters an appointment at her spa, but he only succeeds in getting them kicked out.
  • Butt-Monkey: Ken suffers from this in most of his appearances, often ending up injured one way or another. This is ironic due to his healing prowess and his medical experience, something that annoys Ken. Lily and Kelce also have this role from time to time.

C[]

  • Cannot Tell a Lie: Whoever is affected by the "Rutht Epsak" spell is forced to tell the truth when asked a question. When Lily accidentally casts this spell on Skylar, the former thinks it might not be so bad.

Skylar: My mom's been suspicious of me almost all day. (gasps) What if she asks about what happened last night? If she does, I'll be forced to tell her about the changeling ambush, that I'm being hunted down by said changelings, and that I'm friends with monsters, and then all four of us are gonna be dead!
Lily: (realizing) Okay, I see how we might have a problem now.

  • Character Narrator: Skylar narrates in every single episode, most of it in the form of explanations for the viewer or her opinions on the world around her.
  • Combat Hand Fan: Kiomi is able to turn her dragonfly pin into a tessen, which is first shown in "Operation: Search and Rescue." The iron spokes on the back of the fan are designed to look like dragonfly wings to fool enemies (and as Kiomi mentions, to keep herself from getting arrested).
  • Company Cross-References:

D[]

  • Daywalking Vampire: Leah is a direct example of this trope. Daywalkers, such as Leah, are vampires that can be in the sun without being turned into piles of ash and dust. In addition, daywalkers lack vampire weaknesses.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Many of the characters are this, especially Leah, Skylar, and Aeron.
  • Deflector Shields: The "Dlishe Romf Agdern" spell creates one of these to protect the caster or others.
  • Dodgeball Is Hell: Skylar hates dodgeball. In the series premiere, she is forced to play the sport, and not only is she the first person out, she gets pounded in the face with a dodgeball five times. Even after she's out, she still gets hit with another one, which sends her to the nurse's office.

Skylar: (narrating) If there's a word stronger than hate...
(Skylar gets hit with a dodgeball, falling on the ground in pain.)
Sheila: (blows whistle) Gilham, you're out! Hit the bleachers!
(Skylar does just that, holding her cheek in the process.)
Skylar: (continues narration) That would describe how I feel about dodgeball.

  • Double Meaning Title: "Candy Hearts" is an example of this. The title references both the Valentine's Day theme and Morgan's plan to drain her "boyfriends" of their life essence.

E[]

  • Ear Worm: Morgan's song becomes this for their victims, and the only way to soothe it is for them to be near Morgan.
  • Episode Title Card: Every episode features one, with each one in Skylar's drawing style.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • In "Dreaming of Her," Hanneh is disgusted when Kelce tells her that she has been catfishing Aeron as Leah.

      Hanneh: Girl, that's messed up.

    • In "Watch Your Step, Sister," when Kelce tries to give Skylar a black eye, Cloey restrains her, showing that while she might be a bully, she's not one for violence. Viera is also reluctant to hurt Skylar.
    • While Morgan is willing to feast upon the life essence of humans, she doesn't do so with monsters.

Morgan: I might be hungry, but I'm not a cannibal.

  • Evil-Detecting Dog: As goblins, Ephrin, Ghrel, and Mela are able to sense evil through a test Lily calls the "hand test." The goblins lick a person's hand, and this helps them determine a person's aura. If it tastes fine to them, the person is good. If it doesn't, they're evil. Lily comments that since they're babies though, the method might not always be accurate. When they're older, they'll be able to use this ability without the test.
  • Exact Words: In "The Ins and Outskirts," after Aeron gets on Alicia's nerves, he asks if she is going to kick him out. She does so literally, twice.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Every human and monster has a unique eye design to differentiate themselves. The creature's catchlights can serve as a good indicator for what type of creature they are. Humans and goblins have circular catchlights, vampires have triangle-shaped, witches have diamond-shaped, and sirens have teardrop-shaped. Eye color can also be a good contributor, with vampires commonly having brown or red, witches can have bright or pastel eye colors, werewolves can have gold eyes, changelings and goblins' eyes primarily consist of one color, and ghosts can have grey eyes. Outlines can also help determine this, with werewolves' eyes outlines matching their real eye color. One thing all creatures have in common though is that their catchlights are a lighter version of their main eye color.

F[]

  • First Day of School Episode: "Story of My Life, Part 1" serves as this for Skylar and Kelce at Michelle Watson Academy. While Kelce has a great first day, Skylar has anything but one, suffering through various misfortunes, including falling into a toilet and getting her hair covered in urine.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: "The Slumber Party Incident" revolves around this trope. Lily accidentally casts a body swap spell, known as "Awsp Nemtaylit," on the Hunters. The spell doesn't change the original body's species, so if a human and a monster swap bodies, their species will also be swapped. This causes Skylar to have vampire powers in Leah's body, Leah to be stripped of her powers in Skylar's body, Lily to gain werewolf powers in Sonora's body, and Sonora to gain magic in Lily's body.
  • Food Eats You: After coming to life, Sprinkles' first instinct is to try to eat his creators. Fortunately, he ends up being the one eaten by the episode's end.
  • Food Fight: Whenever someone throws food at someone else, Danny is guaranteed to yell these two words, leading to a food fight.
  • Food Shove Gag: When the Hunters go over to Sonora's apartment for a sleepover, Kelce assumes Robbie knows Sonora is a werewolf. Before she can bring it up though, Sonora stuffs several quesadillas in her mouth to keep her from saying anything. Kelce spits them all out afterwards.
  • Foreshadowing: Belle Laross' catchlights are diamond-shaped, like a witch's. In addition, her ears are kept hidden for a majority of her episode, until the reveal that she is a witch.

G[]

  • Gender Bender: Kelce and Aeron go through this after their bodies are swapped, and both are horrified at the result.
  • Genki Girl: Lily serves as this in spades, as she is obsessed with all things cute and can be incredibly hyper at times, to the point where Sonora has to remind her to reel it back in.
  • Get Out!: In the series premiere, Aeron sneaks into Principal DeVoe's office and hacks into the PA, using AI to disguise his voice. When he's caught, he's ordered to go back to class. Aeron seemingly obliges, but...

Rodger: (sighs) I really got to figure out how he keeps getting in here.
Aeron: (returns) Well, maybe if you didn't leave the door open...
    Rodger: (annoyed) AERON!
Aeron: Okay, okay, I'm leaving. Eesh.

  • Glowing Eyelights of Undeath: Leah's eyes glow bright red whenever she's angry.

H[]

  • Halloween Episode: "Curse of the Sacrificed Scare" is this, centering around the ghost of a schoolgirl who haunts Michelle Watson Academy on Halloween by making pranks and Halloween scares come to life.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Aeron prefers to use a sword as his main weapon. While Ken normally doesn't wield a weapon, he sometimes uses Kiomi's Blood Katana.
  • How We Got Here: "The Slumber Party Incident" opens like this, with Skylar explaining to the viewers what she thought would be a simple slumber party turned into a mistaken kidnapping attempt. From there, she explains how the Hunters got into this situation, and it ends near the end of the episode.
  • Human Disguise: This is what Dominic Preyton assumed when he disguised himself as Superintendent Monroe. After he was exposed, he developed his own human form. Nix and Foona took one on as well as Parker Kim, a power technician, and Barbara Huntington, a hunter, respectively.
  • Humiliation Conga: Skylar goes through this on her first day at Michelle Watson Academy: embarrassing herself in class, getting hit in the face with dodgeballs six times (which sends her to the nurse's office), burning her hand on an oven rack and getting chocolate spilled on her head (the former also sending her to the nurse's office), and falling into a toilet after peeing in it.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In "Curse of the Sacrificed Scare," Kelce dresses up as Draculaura from the 2022 Monster High revival. When Skylar points out her dislike for vampires, Kelce gives this in response.

Kelce: This is how vampires are supposed to be done.

I[]

  • I Am Not Weasel: The goblins are confused for chinchillas at times, despite the fact that they don't look like chinchillas. This is especially noticeable in Ephrin and Ghrel, who lack the ears chinchillas have. While Mela does have ears, they are much larger than a regular chinchilla's. The goblins being mistaken for chinchillas is also lampshaded a few times in the series.

Lily: The guy at the pet store said they were the strangest chinchillas he'd ever seen!
Skylar: Either that, or he'd never actually seen a chinchilla before.

  • I Ate WHAT?!: In "Curse of the Sacrificed Scare," Watson gives his fellow staff members homemade chocolate spiders. It's not until Alicia takes a bite of hers that she realizes the chocolate spiders are actual spiders, which terrifies and disgusts the whole staff.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Skylar gets this twice in the series premiere, saying likely no one will recognize Kelce and that she's not gonna make friends right away. She's instantly proven wrong when Danny asks for a photo with Kelce and she meets Viera Palomino, who, along with the Neat Names, later become her friends. It seems as if it's going to happen a third time when Skylar mentions the guy of Kelce's dreams won't just bump into her, and they end up bumping into Aeron right after. It's subverted later on however, as Aeron shares with Skylar that he can't stand Kelce.
  • Invisibility with Drawbacks: The "Sivinblei Romf" spell turns the caster, or someone else, invisible, but the spell's effects wear off if the affected sneezes.
  • I Will Show You X!: In "Story of My Life, Part 1," Skylar jokes that if Kelce had orange hair dye and a red nose, she'd look like a clown. An angered Kelce threatens to give Skylar a red nose in response.

J-L[]

  • "Jump Off a Bridge" Rebuttal: Leah asks Aeron a slightly different version of this question, asking what he would do if Mr. Billings told him not to jump off a cliff. When he says he would, a shocked and concerned Sonora asks why.

Aeron: (casually) Mostly to spite him.
Sonora: You do realize you would DIE, right?!
    Aeron: I do.
Sonora: And yet, you'd still do it?!
Aeron: (thinking it over) Yeah, I still would.
    Sonora: (concerned) That's really concerning.

  • Language of Magic: Most witches cast their spells by creating anagrams of words in the English language (e.g. Dlishe Romf Agdern - Shield From Danger). However, this isn't the only way spells can be done. Kiomi casts her spells in Japanese (e.g. Shield From Danger/Kiken Kara Mamoru).

M[]

  • Magic Kiss: When Morgan kisses one of her victims, it makes them fall madly in love with her. However, it doesn't work if they're in love with someone else beforehand.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: Witches have magical glitter markings on their ears to differentiate themselves from other monsters.
  • Master Actor: Kelce is this due to her background as a Hollywood actress.
  • Master of Disguise: Most changelings are this to some degree, especially Dominic. Kelce also proves to be this when she dresses up as a pretty woman to distract the changelings in "Operation: Search and Rescue."
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The Kamakiris' surname translates to "mantis" in English, hinting at Lily, Kiomi, and Ken being witches, as well as Leah (the only non-witch in the family) being a vampire.
    • The Goblins are each named after a hormone. Ephrin is named after epinephrine (which matches his hyperactivity), Ghrel is named after ghrelin (which matches his large appetite), and Mela is named after melatonin (which matches her tiredness).
    • Morgan's name sounds similar to the word morgue, hinting at her murderous intentions.
    • Robbie's last name, Cachorro, translates to "cub" in English, referencing both her love of werewolves and the fact that her niece, Sonora, is a werewolf.
  • Medium Blending: The show combines 2-D computer animation with traditional hand-drawn animation through Scarlet Fury.
  • Mosquito Miscreants: While she isn't technically a mosquito, Belle Laross (who tried to turn girls into bug monsters and force them to eat townspeople turned into frogs) has the ability to turn into a mosquito-witch hybrid. Later, with a combination of the bug monster punch and a drop of Belle's blood, she gets turned into a mosquito and goes out the way most of them do: getting squished.
  • My Nayme Is: All members of the Neat Names have unusually spelled names (e.g. Kelce - Kelsey, Viera - Vera, Cloey - Chloe, Hanneh - Hannah). Lily's full name is actually Liliene, an altered version of Lillian.

N[]

O[]

  • Odd Name Out: Out of all of the goblins, Mela's name is the closest to a normal name.
  • One-Winged Angel: Dominic reveals himself to be this in "Bring Down the Curtain, Part 2" when he transforms into his true form in front of the Hunters and Kelce.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Corey explains that all ghosts were people who were either killed accidentally or murdered. When reincarnated, they get a chance to live again, but only monsters can see them. While ghosts are able to evade various injuries, they can still obtain cuts and bruises. They also can have scars from when they were alive. Ghosts in this series also have elemental powers, being able to turn their bodies into elemental forms, control the elements at will, and create them out of thin air.
  • Our Goblins Are Different: Goblins in this series have chinchilla-like qualities. While they look similar to chinchillas, they don't look exactly like them, having spikes all over their bodies and strange colors. The differences from chinchillas are especially noticeable in males, as they lack visible ears. Goblins also have two stomachs. One is for eating, while the other is for storing non-edible items. The second stomach is similar to a void, as it can keep anything of any size without ever getting full. Both stomachs are capable of regurgitation, however, items in the second stomach can be removed by another person.
  • Our Sirens Are Different: A siren's true form is reminiscent of an inverted mermaid. In addition to their hypnotic singing, sirens can also put their victims under a love spell by kissing their victims, as well. Either way, the siren's song then gets stuck in the victim's head, making them fall under the siren's spell and compelling them to follow their orders. However, the siren can switch the brainwashing off at times if they don't need their pawn at that exact moment. If their victim is in love with someone else, the siren can remove their love for that person and transfer it into a talisman, making the victim feel irrational hatred towards their previous love. In addition, sirens need all the essence of their victims to obtain maximum power, including their life essence, which they drain after getting enough love.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: Werewolves are able to turn into their wolf forms any time. While werewolves are able to be humanoid, they retain wolf ears in their humanoid forms. They can also go into a form that's part humanoid, part werewolf. While they are full wolf, they manage to retain their sanity. However, on nights with a full moon, werewolves lose their sanity and go feral. With enough emotional appeal, they can be snapped out of it. They can also form special bonds with people and gain a strong urge to protect them.
  • Our Witches Are Different: Witches have bug DNA within them, which can turn them into anthropomorphic witch-bug hybrids. However, they only unlock these powers when they reach adolescence. Their bug DNA is also responsible for giving them magic. When they get older, the witch's body can't handle their bug half, so they have to seal it away inside magical bug-shaped pins. While they have pointed ears like other humanoid monsters, they also have mystical dust markings on their ears to differentiate themselves.

P[]

  • Persona Non Grata: Due to their actions in "Kick Back and Kick Butt," Leah, Lily, Sonora, and Aeron are banned from Re-jul-ination for life.
  • Playful Hacker: Aeron is an expert hacker, if his hijacking the school PA, grade database, and security cameras aren't an indication. Despite this, he isn't a bad person, and does his best to follow the law (at least, at school).
  • Poisoned Chalice Switcheroo: In order to defeat Belle Laross, Ken removes the label on her bottle of berry soda, reattaches it to the creeping potion bottle, and switches their positions. In addition, he adds a drop of her blood into the creeping potion. After Belle takes a sip of it, she ends up turning herself into a mosquito, which leads to her downfall.
  • Power Nullifier: The nullifying choker keeps monsters from using their powers. It can also leave them trapped in an alternate form, depending on the monster. For example, if the choker is used on a changeling, they are trapped in a human form instead of their true form.
  • Power Outage Plot: "The Ins and Outskirts" is this. The main villain is The Shadow, a shadow monster with the ability to steal electricity. As a result, multiple locations, such as Michelle Watson Academy, the Gilham-Rivera residence, and Jerry's Pizza lose power. The Shadow aims to steal all power in New Ember to make the town it's permanent home and gain more power. Thankfully though, it's destroyed at the end, and power is returned to New Ember.
  • Prone to Vomiting: Kelce is this, due to her weak stomach and terror towards the supernatural.

Q-R[]

  • Queer Establishing Moment:
    • "Dreaming of Her" has this for Lily when she is asked about a love note from Aeron. Lily comments that even if it was for her, guys aren't her type, establishing her as lesbian. Following this episode, Lily swaps out her purple heart barrette with a lesbian pride heart barrette.
    • While it was hinted at in the past, in "Something to Know About Me," Cloey and Hanneh are established as pansexual and transgender and bisexual, respectively. It's also confirmed the two are dating.
    • "Candy Hearts" ends with Lily finding a Valentine's Day note from someone in her locker, though the bottom of the note is ripped off. The Hunters try to guess who wrote it, but are unable to determine who did. Sonora stays behind as the others go to lunch, and pulls out a strip of paper from her backpack pocket. When she unfolds it, it has her name on it, revealing she wrote the note. Sonora has shown interest in other guys before, meaning she's bisexual.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": After Kelce wakes up from being swapped into Aeron's body, she is unaware of what has happened. When she wakes up, the others are nervous to tell her what has happened, as they know she will be terrified. Once she starts to figure out what's going on, she runs over to the mirror yelling no many times as she sees she is in Aeron's body, causing her to scream in panic.
  • Right Behind Me: After the events of "Operation: Search and Rescue," Kelce summarizes most of the events that occurred in the episode. During her rant, Leah and Aeron notice something, and wave to Kelce to get her to stop talking. When she gets to the part where Leah was staked, Kiomi yells in shock and anger, making Kel come to a realization.

Kelce: (nervously) Kiomi's standing behind me, isn't she?
    Leah and Aeron: (deadpan) Yep.
(Kelce turns around and sees the stern look on Kiomi's face. Kelce turns back around.)
Kelce: (confused) Why didn't you two tell me?!
    Aeron: We tried!

  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: In "Candy Hearts," Lily gives Aeron a Valentine's Day cupcake as a surprise for Leah. In the cafeteria, Lily tells Leah she's in for a big surprise, one that will "leave your jaw hanging and your heart pumping if it could." While she's referring to the cupcake, when Aeron arrives, he acts strangely cruel towards Leah, raises his voice, and smashes the cupcake in her face before leaving to get his food.

Leah: (shocked and somewhat agitated, speaks to Lily) Well, you were right about me being surprised.

S[]

  • Show Within a Show: Scarlet Fury is this in Skylar and the Hunters. There is also the Assignment: Schoolgirl trilogy, a spy movie franchise which features Kelce as the main star.
  • Sick and Wrong: In "Sister Twister," Skylar shows Aeron multiple drawings of violent things happening to Kelce, with most of them being cartoony in nature. When he brings up a bookmarked page, she comments it is filled with "unnecessarily graphic and gory depictions of violence" towards Kelce. Aeron, unfazed, looks anyway. While we don't see what Skylar drew, whatever it was disturbed Aeron greatly.

Aeron: That's gonna inspire more than a few nightmares.

  • Stomach of Holding: The goblins have two separate stomachs: one that is used to digest food, and the other that is used to contain non-digestible items. The second stomach is also endless, as it can hold anything, such as lipstick containers, books, potions, and even a person, without becoming full. The objects contained in the second stomach can be removed, whether the goblins do it themselves by regurgitation or Lily takes it out for them (most commonly, it's the former).
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: Sonora serves as the straight man to Lily's wise guy.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Due to attempted bribery and impersonating employees (mainly the latter), Leah, Lily, Sonora, and Aeron are banned from Re-jul-ination for life. Both are plausible offenses to ban the four from the spa.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Dominic lampshades the changelings' stupidity on multiple occasions.

Dominic: Somehow, there's hundreds of changelings, and yet, I'm the only one with an actual brain!

  • Sweet Baker: Lily loves to bake, especially cupcakes. She also creates "magicupcakes," which can cause magical effects on whoever eats them (ex. color-changing hair, transformation into monkeys, head inflating, etc.)
  • Sweet Tooth: Relating to the above, Lily has a large sweet tooth, and cupcakes are her favorite food. She also can go into major sugar rushes whenever she eats too much sugar.

T[]

  • Techno Wizard: Aeron serves as this among the Hunters.
  • Three... Two... One...: In "Candy Hearts," Leah comes up with the idea of getting one of the Hunters alone with Morgan to find out what she's done to Danny and Giovanni. Acknowledging Danny's love of food fights, Aeron takes a slingshot out of his bag and throws an apple at Morgan's head. After Morgan retaliates, Skylar asks how exactly that was supposed to help.

    Aeron: Hold that thought.
(To the others' confusion, he hides under the table.)
Aeron: You all might wanna get under here, too.
    Sonora: (curious) Why?
Aeron: Because of what's about to happen in... (He counts down to three with his fingers.) Three... two... one...
(He points to Danny, who yells...)
    Danny: FOOD FIGHT!

  • Time-Shifted Actor: In "The Tail of Sonora," Sonora and Lily's voice actresses change to help represent their younger years. Younger Lily is voiced by Haley Tju, while younger Sonora is voiced by Izabella Alvarez.
  • Troubled Teen: Most of the Hunters fall in this in some way.
    • Skylar had a lonely childhood and suffered bullying at the hands of others, including her own step-sister, and emotional neglect at the hands of her mother and ex-step-father.
    • After she became a vampire, Leah spent most of her time alone, hiding, and even after being taken in by the Kamakiris, she suffers from trust issues. In addition, she also despises the fact that she's a vampire.
    • Sonora's parents died in a car crash when she was five. After she became a werewolf, she developed self-doubt issues, and like Leah, she hates her werewolf blood. She starts to overcome them over the course of the first season.
    • Kelce suffered emotional and verbal abuse through her father, and it's implied (later, confirmed) he led to her developing bulimia.
    • Aeron's mother died when he was a baby, and he also had problems with his own father, who also died a while before the series. Due to their passings, he developed his rebellious attitude and his lack of respect for authority.
  • Two Out of Three Ain't Bad: In "Story of My Life, Part 1," Kelce has three goals at Michelle Watson Academy: to be recognized wherever she goes, to have loving friends who are into fashion, and to find the perfect boyfriend. She's right about two of those: she ends up getting attention at school and finds friends in the Neat Names (who are just as mean as she is). With the last one, however, the guy of her dreams, Aeron King, dislikes her and thinks she's a creep. She isn't bothered by it though, saying one day he'll fall for her, despite Skylar claiming that probably won't happen.
  • Tyop on the Cover: For Michelle Watson Academy, the E in "Academy" is a U, making the logo's spelling "Michelle Watson Acadumy." Rodger explains this is due to the person who created the logo not being a very good speller. It also lampshades the poor conditions of the school.

V[]

  • Valentine's Day Episode: While it isn't Valentine's Day until the end of the episode, "Candy Hearts" takes place on the days leading to Valentine's Day. The episode centers around a siren that gains power through love and is able to put her victims under a love spell.
  • Vengeful Ghost: "The Legend of the Turner Ghost" paints the titular ghost girl as this. 150 years ago, there lived a girl named Kaitlynn Turner, who was claimed to be a witch (which was true). She was tormented by bullies as a result. One day, they pulled a terrible prank on her that burned the left half of her face. On the Halloween of 1875, to get back at them, she used her magic to set up an elaborate trap that would make the bullies dangle by their legs in front of the whole school. Before she could go through with it, she fell from the roof and her neck got caught in one of the ropes, causing her to slowly die from asphyxiation. Moments before she died, she cursed the school, saying every year on Halloween, she would return and make them suffer. The students and staff think it's just a tall tale, but given the world they live in, it quickly becomes clear this is not just a legend.
  • The Voiceless: The Shadow is the only antagonist in the show to never speak due to their lack of a mouth.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: This is what sets changelings apart from other monsters, as they are able to change into anything they wish. Other monsters, such as vampires and werewolves, are able to do this as well, but only to a certain extent.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: After Aeron tastes what he thinks is cherry juice (but is actually squirrel blood), Kelce gets so disgusted that she vomits, with the vomit visible. Fortunately for the viewers, she runs off to the bathroom before she does it again.

W[]

  • Wall of Weapons: Kiomi has this in her secret study. The wall is also where the human members of the Hunters gained their weapons, with Skylar choosing a stake gun, Kelce choosing a bow and arrows, and Aeron choosing a sword.
  • Wham Episode:
    • "No Bugs About It": Ken finds out about the Hunters, but agrees to keep it secret for now (mostly to stay out of trouble with Kiomi).
    • "Watch Your Step, Sister": At the end, Kelce finds out about the existence of monsters. Not only this, she finds out about the Hunters, as well.
    • "Kelce's Lament": After the previous episode, Kelce plans to reveal the Hunters to the world. Thankfully though, she decides against it in the end, and her redemption arc, as well as the Neat Names', begins. We also learn why Kelce acts the way she does: her father was abusive towards her, and it made her spiral into the vain, obsessive, mean girl she is today.
    • "Bring Down the Curtain": This episode features multiple reveals and changes to the status quo. First off, we learn the identity of the changeling headmaster: Dominic Preyton, who wishes to capture the Hunters for a group known as the Vempire. In addition, the real Wade Monroe (whom Dominic had been masquerading as) is freed, but thanks to some memory-altering magic, his memory of being kidnapped by Dominic is repressed and he believes the school inspection went well, and he passes Michelle Watson. Finally, Skylar reveals to Aeron the truth about monsters, and he and Skylar continue their friendship.
    • "The Slumber Party Incident": Kiomi learns about the Hunters, but like Ken, she agrees to keep it secret.
    • "Something to Know About Me": We learn details about the Hunters' personal lives, as well as those of the students of Mr. Billings' class.
      • Skylar reveals her father walked out on her and her mom when she was just a baby.
      • Leah reveals her father died when she was young, and her mother died from causes she doesn't elaborate into.
      • Lily reveals she never met her grandparents for two reasons: Kiomi's parents were racist, and Ken's parents, while not racist, were forced to sever ties with him, Kiomi, and Lily to protect them.
      • Sonora often relives the car crash that killed her parents in her nightmares.
      • Kelce had bulimia when she was twelve, and it got so bad to the point she nearly ended up in the hospital.
      • While reluctant to share it, Aeron reveals his mom died when he was a baby, and he and his father often fought. His father died a bit before the series, which he often blames himself for. He also dislikes bringing it up as he hates all the pain it makes him feel.
      • Viera's parents aren't often around due to work, but they do care for her nonetheless.
      • Cloey is revealed to be pansexual, and she is dating Hanneh.
      • Hanneh's revealed to be transgender, and she is also the daughter of a gay couple. She also mentions her birth name to be Niall, with her changing it after her favorite model. She and Cloey are also dating.
      • Danny once dented the hood of Mr. Billings' old car, which was why he got into making videos in the first place.
      • Brayden once was a star football player for the Granville Greats, the football team of West Granville High. However, due to bullying, he quit football and moved to New Ember.
    • "The Rising Action": Skylar finds out Dominic plans to release a gas on New Ember that will turn all of its residents into monsters. In addition, it's revealed he wishes to erase the Hunters' memories of monsters and turn Lily, Sonora, and Leah into regular humans, so they can't stop him. The hierarchy among monsters is revealed, with vampires, witches, werewolves, ghosts, and changelings holding power. It's also implied Corey might be one of the leaders of the Vempire. We also learn Ken and Kiomi are Vempire fugitives, and Dominic likely plans on killing them once he captures them.
    • "When One Story Ends": The Hunters, Kiomi, Ken, and the goblins help defeat Dominic and the rest of the changelings. Unfortunately though, Michelle Watson Academy is destroyed as a result. Lily uses her magic to create a magical choker to trap Dominic in a human form, restraining his powers for the time being. Dominic is arrested, and the remaining changelings flee to avoid being arrested as well. At the end, Skylar decides they need to travel to the Vempire and resolve the conflict between monsters and humans. As for Dominic, he is freed by an unknown vampire, but for now, he has no way of getting back to the Vempire.
  • Wham Line: After "Superintendent Monroe" shows off his shapeshifting powers to the Hunters and Kelce, Skylar points out a crucial detail, leading to "Monroe" dropping another bombshell.

Skylar: (confused) But, this doesn't make any sense.
("Monroe," as Skylar, shapeshifts back into the form we've seen throughout the two-parter.)
    Fake Wade: (confused) What doesn't?
Skylar: The fact that you were able to hold this form for almost a week! The other changelings couldn't hold a form for more than an hour, at most!
Fake Wade: (smirks) Well, I guess you can say I'm a little different than them.
Leah: (confused) What do you mean?
Fake Wade: Well, we haven't been properly introduced, so I guess now would be a good time to do so. You see... (His voice slowly shifts, becoming deeper and more menacing.) My name is Dominic, and I...
("Monroe," or Dominic, rather, slowly transforms into a green changeling in front of them as he speaks, revealing his true form.)
Dominic: I am not just a mere changeling. I am their leader.

  • Whole Episode Flashback:
    • "The Tail of Sonora" is this, first showing how Lily and Sonora met, and then how Sonora became a werewolf.
    • While not technically a full flashback, "Kelce's Lament" features many flashbacks to Kelce's childhood and her father's emotional abuse towards her.
  • Wooden Stake: Skylar uses these as her main weapon, as well as her stake gun for proper aim.

Y[]

  • You Do NOT Want to Know:
    • In "Bring Down the Curtain, Part 1," Leah hits Aeron with her blood bottle, spilling squirrel blood on him. Aeron gathers some of it on his finger and puts it in his mouth, finding it delicious. When he asks what it is, a disgusted Leah tells him he doesn't want to know. This doesn't stop him from trying more, however, though he knocks it off after a little while.
    • In "Operation: Search and Rescue," when Skylar asks where the Blood Katana's name comes from, Kiomi says she doesn't want the answer.
