~ Woody's final words as Andy drives off to college in Toy Story 3

Sheriff Woody is a fictional character who appears in the Disney and Pixar animated films and short films Toy Story. He is a cowboy, pullstring rag doll, and is one of the main protagonist characters along with Buzz Lightyear. He is mainly voiced by actor Tom Hanks, with his brother, Jim Hanks, voicing him in video games and other merchandise.

Woody was created by directors and writers John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Joe Ranft. His facial features are based on the former Disney animator Tone Thyne. Woody was designed by Oscar-nominated animator and Disney legend Bud Luckey. Woody is based on John Lasseter's Casper pull-string doll he had as a kid, as well as the Howdy Doody puppets from the 1950s show Howdy Doody.

Woody is named after Woody Strode, a character actor known for many roles in western films. It was revealed in August 2009 by Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich that Woody's official last name is "Pride". Unkrich stated in his Twitter feed "Woody's actual full name is 'Woody Pride', and has been since the earliest days of developing the original Toy Story."

In the films, Woody was Andy Davis' favorite toy until, Andy became an adult and gave Woody, and the rest of his toys, to a little girl named Bonnie. Woody served as the leader of the toys in both Andy and Bonnie's room. When Bonnie's family decided to go on a vacation, he found his long lost girlfriend, Bo Peep. He decided he would remain with Bo Peep and help lost toys find new owners.

Since his debut, Woody has received largely positive reception from reviewers because of his character arc, personality, as well as Tom Hanks' vocal performance.

Idea Wiki appearances[]

  • A life-sized version of Woody appears as one of the main protagonists in the Disney+ miniseries Planet Toys, voiced by Jim Hanks. This version (who hails from the miniseries's titular fictional planet) is the town sheriff of the Old West City, and a mentor for the human protagonists Lucas, Amanda and Sam. Similar to his counterpart from the films, Woody is also in a relationship with Bo Peep, and is close friends with Buzz Lightyear and Jessie.
  • Another version of Woody appears in Toy Stories, voiced again by Jim Hanks. This version is owned by a girl named Claire, but still shares the same personality as Andy's Woody in the films.
