The idea for Scott and Katherine began with Nathan Greno who envisioned the film as a "buddy" animated comedy adventure. The film entered development in 1998, with Greno as the film's directors with a tentative release scheduled for a summer 2003 release. Originally, the film was titled The Adventures of Scott and Simon and had a completely different story. This version of the story had a relationship between a boy and a skunk. However, when Atlantis: The Lost Empire was in production, Walt Disney Feature Animation president Thomas Schumacher decided that the project should focus on a relationship between a boy and a girl rather than a boy and a skunk.
In October 2000, the new film was announced as Scott and Katherine with its new story originally evolving Scott as the lead role, while he was working on the film, Bruce W. Smith joined as the co-director of the film. Production of the film began in January 2001, Walt Disney Feature Animation made sure there was something new to see in Scott and Katherine by putting more human characters in the film than there were in its predecessor and improving their appearance, with the use of a few systems that dealt with hair to improve its appearance and movement. The set up for all the characters was done in the first 2 years of production.
The film was originally rated G by the MPAA, but Nathan Greno felt that the film was not for younger children due to violence, so it was later changed to rated PG.
Nathan Lane initially auditioned for the lead role of Scott but later turned it down, feeling it was too similar to his role as Timon in Disney's 1994 film The Lion King and Snowbell in Columbia's 1999 film Stuart Little. As a result, Lane departed from Scott and Katherine in 2001 and was replaced by Tobey Maguire. Andy Serkis was hired to voice Michael, which Scott and Katherine will be the first animated movie to have Andy Serkis as a voice actor.
Animation and design
This film was originally intended as a hand-drawn traditional animated feature produced in CAPS, After seeing the box office success of DreamWorks Animation Shrek, Disney/Pixar's Monsters, Inc. and Nickelodeon Movies' Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Scott and Katherine was later converted into a CGI animated feature film just like Pixar, which began production on the film in 2001 while production of Brother Bear was started. According to producer Byron Howard, the discussion to move the film to CGI would be more better than using traditional animation for the film's themes and elements. The studio also utilized Animal Logic for the animation process, as well as for additional visual effects.
Many of the character designs were supplied by Brian Kesinger. Other character designers include Buck Lewis, William Stout, Craig Elliott, Chen-Yi Chang, Don Hall, Raffaello Vecchione and David Krentz. Additionally, Brian served as an uncredited co-director of the film.
