Rise of the Mages is a 1991 animated fantasy film directed and co-written by Garrett Fredrickson and co-produced by Mario Kassar. Featuring the voices of Robyn Lively, Jeff Cohen, Lucy Deakins, David Jason, Jeffrey Tambor, Patrick Swayze and Carol Burnett, the film's plot is about a mage group known as The Defenders, who stop mythical creatures from harming people, and how a classmate of the lead character, Skye Hayward (Lively), inadvertently learns that she is in the group, along with a hunter (Tambor) also learning of the existence of this group.

The film started as an idea Fredrickson had before he spearheaded the English adaptation of A Penguin's Memories. After that film's release, he managed to secure financing through the United States' Carolco Pictures and Japan's Nippon Television Network, with Toei Animation doing the animation production.

Rise of the Mages was released on October 11, 1991 by TriStar Pictures in the United States and Toei Company in Japan. It recieved generally positive reviews from critics and grossed $75.2 million worldwide against a $20 million budget. The film's success helped to properly kickstart Garrett Fredrickson's film career.

Home Media[]

In March 1992, Rise of the Mages was released on VHS and LaserDisc by Carolco Home Video and Family Home Entertainment, making it one of only two Carolco releases under the latter company and the only Carolco Home Video title released under them. The VHS release was later reprinted by the company's owner, LIVE Entertainment, in 1996. Incidentally, Garrett Fredrickson would acquire the trademark from Lionsgate in 2004 and renamed Nightstorm Productions as such.

Artisan Entertainment and Family Home Entertainment first released the film on DVD on May 18, 1999. It was only available in a pan/scan full screen format. A "15th Anniversary" edition DVD was later released on October 10, 2006 by Lionsgate and the film's current owner, StudioCanal. It was released in widescreen, and featured a mini-documentary on the film's production, interviews with Garrett Fredrickson and Mario Kassar, and the movie's theatrical trailer. A Blu-ray release of the film then followed on March 16, 2010.
