Rex and his friends (also known as Rex the Robot Dog in other territories) is a children’s television series base on the 1998 japanese tokusatsu series Tetsuwan Tantei Robotack unlike other American Tokusatsu adaptations that straight up use footage from their japanese counterpart this show doesn’t use any of the footage just the suits and a few other things

The show focuses on a robot dog name Rex who lives in a town called robotvile with all his friends as they go on amazing adventures and learn lifelong lessons about friendship, kindness, trust and honesty

In 2000 toei was thinking about bringing Robotack over to America is shape or form they figured of an adaptation wasn’t going to be all that appealing for western audience so they thought maybe do something totally different and just use the suits and make something original they were thinking maybe something akin to Barney the Dinosaur so apparently they looked at that show and and took inspiration from it as well as other shows such as Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Bananas in Pajamas and Bear in the Big Blue House, Toei approach Saban entertainment and asked him if they be interested in making a show like that Saban at first was a little hesitant at first due to only wanting to make action shows like they were doing with Power Rangers at that point but later reconsidered and decided to go ahead and produce the show

when it came to broadcasting the show three networks were considered to add a show those being PBS Kids, Nick Jr and Playhouse Disney with PBS Kids being the one to pick the show up and it started airing on the channel in 2001
