Plot/Synopsis[]

Five years after the events of the second film, Crazy Dave was watching the TV while eating his taco meal and drinking Diet Coke at his house, until the program was interrumpted by an urgent news about a zombie apocalypse chaos in Alaska caused by Dr. Zomboss, and Crazy Dave was very surprised about that! Then his cell phone rang and he picked up the call, and Burt told him through the cell phone about the zombie attack in the city of Juneau, Alaska. So Crazy Dave advertised the plants about the zombie attack in that city and they are going to reunite with his neighbors to form a survival team, they left home and went to look for his nephews to go to Neighborville Conservation Academy, where Dave also advertised this situation to his cousin Douglas Fir and the four returned to his neighborhood to tell Burt and Matilda that they need to form a survival team, which Dave called it the Neighborville Survival Team (NST), and to travel to Juneau, Alaska because he heard on the news that there was a zombie apocalypse in that city that was caused by nobody but the evil and infamous Dr. Zomboss, who invented the Zombie Virus, and they went in Douglas' RV to stop Zomboss and end this dangerous zombie apocalypse before it's too late and he can rule the Earth and turn people into zombies permanently.

In the post credits scene, Super Brainz tells Laser Bean, Kernel Corn, Citron and Rose that he will invade Neighborville alongside his minions, including Z-Mech, Foot Soldier, Engineer and many other zombies.

And later, the rest of the plants that appeared in the previous two films come to take the photo. Before the photographer (voiced by George Fan, the creator of Plants vs. Zombies) takes the picture, says them to say Brains, revealing that the photographer is a Paparazzi Zombie, and leaving the plants and the neighbors confused, he corrects himself to say Whiskey. Production[]

On November 1, 2019, four months and four days after the premiere of Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, DreamWorks Animation officially confirmed that there was going to be a third Plants vs. Zombies film scheduled for a spring 2022 release, bringing the film series to be a trilogy. Five months later, on April 2020, the production was shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some time later after the pandemic, on February 23, 2022, DreamWorks Animation confirmed that the production was officially restored and the filmmakers started producing the film, and the film's title was Plants vs. Zombies 3. On March 9, 2022, it was confirmed that Joel Crawford will be the director of the film, Mark Swift will be the producer, Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return as the screenplayers, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger will return as the story writers, and Christopher Knights will be the editor. The next month, it was confirmed that the film is scheduled for a spring 2024 release. On August 2022, the writers had been started writing the full transcript for the film and brainstorming ideas for it. The idea was originally planned as a Zombie Virus infection in the middle of Suburbia, the city where Crazy Dave lives, who needs to team up with his best friend Harvey Flaxcaster, his neighbors and his nephews to survive the apocalypse and save the world from the zombies, but the producers didn't want to repeat the story in the same place, so they decided to choose another place where the main plot would occur. The planned potential countries were Australia, Russia, China, Japan, Norway, Denmark, Tibet, Canada and Iceland, until Alaska, one of the states from the USA, was definitely chosen as the main place for the plot. The creators liked the idea, and feeled it original and never-before-seen in the game franchise. Some time later, near the end of 2022, DreamWorks Animation announced that Jack Dylan Grazer and Millie Bobby Brown, and Ghostbusters co-star Bill Murray had joined the cast of the film, while Dan Aykroyd and Steve Buscemi revealed the story, which follows Crazy Dave teaming up with his nephews Nate Timely and Patrice Blazing, his best friend and the other neighbors he knows to survive a zombie apocalypse in Alaska and they must stop Dr. Zomboss with the help of the plants before he rules Earth and make people become zombies permanently, and eventually go to an all-out war and the biggest battle they've ever had. On February 2023, it was confirmed that Bryce Dallas Howard, Jack McBrayer and Danny McBride had joined the cast. A day after this announcement, DreamWorks Animation changed the title's film to Plants vs. Zombies 3: Welcome to Alaska.

On March 6, 2023, Harvey Flaxcaster was definitely scrapped from the film and was replaced by Crazy Dave's cousin Douglas Fir from the 2024 update of Plants vs. Zombies 3 (also known as Plants vs. Zombies 3: Welcome to Zomburbia) that came on January 17 of the next year, so Crazy Dave and Douglas would make a better team with the other neighbors rather than Harvey. This resulted that the filmmakers had to force Bill Murray to leave the film's cast so they could hire another actor for the voice role of Douglas Fir, and Woody Harrelson was chosen for the role of Douglas Fir. Additionally, this resulted the writers to erase Harvey's dialogue from the final transcript and replace them by Douglas'.

On March 15, 2023, Michael Giacchino was confirmed to compose the score for Plants vs. Zombies 3: Welcome to Alaska, replacing Hans Zimmer from the first two films. On May 5, 2023, it was confirmed that John Cena had joined the cast to replace the now retired Bruce Willis as the voice of Chard Guard from Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time. A day later, Cena confirmed that he decided to take Bruce Willis' place because he had revealed on April of last year that Willis had been retired from acting due to health problems. On July 18, 2023, it was confirmed that Elizabeth Banks, Damon Wayans Jr, Ed Helms, Chris Evans and Christopher Mintz-Plasse had joined the cast, and some of the cast from the first and second film are possibly going to reprise their respective roles.

On August 14, 2023, it was confirmed that Plants vs. Zombies 3: Welcome to Alaska was officially scheduled to release in the United States on November 8, 2024, while the filmmakers are almost finishing the storyboards, character models, animation and the dialogue for the film. Later, on the first day of December it was confirmed that the cast from the previous films are going to reprise their respective voice roles. From the first film cast, Harrison Ford, Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Brolin, Will Forte, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Mark Hamill and Sir Patrick Stewart are going to reprise their roles as Ice-shroom, Doom-shroom, Gatling Pea, Scaredy-shroom, Pole Vaulter Zombie, Pogo Zombie, Ladder Zombie and Cob Cannon respectively. From the second film cast, Steve Carell, Ken Jeong, Stephen Root, Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt, Ludacris and many others are going to reprise their respective roles. Also, George Fan is going to reprise his voice role as Zombie Bobsled Team from the first film. In 2024, the film's title was changed to "Plants vs. Zombies 3: Alaskan Getaway". On March 2024, DreamWorks Animation announced that the cast started recording the dialogues for their characters, and Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, rescheduled the film to March 21, 2025 due to the problems with the film's plot. On June, the movie was later rescheduled to May 9 of the same year to avoid competition with Disney's Snow White (Live Action remake). The film was officially completed on December 2024.

Future[]

Sequel[]

Shortly after the theatrical release of this film, it was revealed that a fourth and final film that will be based on Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, the shooter game from the Plants vs. Zombies game franchise, is in development. In recent interviews, Brad Pitt, the voice actor of Laser Bean in Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, talks about reprising his role as the Laser Bean in the next PvZ film. On August 30, 2025, it is confirmed that the film is scheduled to be released on May 31, 2030, making it one of the first DreamWorks films to be released in the 2030s decade, and one of the first overall animated films to be released in the 2030s. Additionally, the cast was officially confirmed: the returning voices of the main characters from previous films, with newcomers including Henry Cavill (who replaces Roger Craig Smith) as the voice of Superbrainz, and three cast members from Transformers One including Chris Hemsworth as the voice of Kernel Corn, Bryan Tyree Henry as the voice of Citron, and Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Rose.

Spin-off films[]

A second spin-off film about Crazy Dave is in early development. It is officially scheduled to be released on June 9, 2028. In an interview, Dan Aykroyd, the voice actor of Crazy Dave, doubts whether he will reprise his role as him in future productions or not, but acclaims he is sure that he will be the narrator of the upcoming spin-off film. The movie's plot will focus on the life of a younger Crazy Dave and his career as both a gardener and a scientist. Another spin-off film, about Dr. Zomboss, is also in development, and it is officially scheduled to be released on June 8, 2029. Its plot will focus on a scientist named Edgar George Zombinsky, who is obsessed with necrotechnology and brain manipulation. In September 2025, their official titles were confirmed, and they'll be called "Dave: The Crazy Origin of a Gardener" and "Brainiac Maniac: The Rise of Dr. Zomboss", respectively.
