Out is a 2020 American supernatural horror film directed, written and co-produced by James Wan. The film stars Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Allison Pill, Mike Coulter, James Scully and Elisabeth Shue, and follows Bryan Tremblay (Wilson), a recently widowed man who becomes terrorised by the ghost of his late wife, Isabel (Farmiga). Wan conceived the idea of Out during the post-production of Aquaman. Principal photography for the film began in August 2019 and concluded in February the following year. The film was released by Lionsgate in the United States on October 16, 2020 and received critical acclaim for its unrelenting intensity, visceral impact, the performances of Wilson and Farmiga, and Wan's writing and directing. Out was also a significant financial success, grossing $308 million worldwide from its $36 million budget.
Out earned many honors, including three at the 93rd Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Sound Editing, and received eight other nominations including Best Actor (Wilson), Best Supporting Actress (Farmiga) and Best Director. It became the first horror film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture since The Silence of the Lambs in 1992. The film also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama, the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay.
