NiGHTS: Guardian of Dreams

NiGHTS: Guardian of Dreams is a Japanese flying video game and a revival of NiGHTS being a launch title for the PlayStation 6.

Synopsis[]

NiGHTS has been dormant for a while as they soon reawaken when two new kids' dreams are being haunted by a dangerous subgroup of Nightmareans led by the dangerous Queen Phobia as NiGHTS has to fly through dreams and work with these kids in order to stop Queen Phobia and save Nightopia and beyond again from these new Nightmareans, with NiGHTS facing their first threat that isn't connected to Wizeman and Reala.

Playable[]

  • NiGHTS (voiced by Amanda Hufford) - a playful and mischievous Nightmarean who had been asleep for a while as they reawaken after the freeing of Queen Phobia and her own Nightmarean army as they have to fly through new worlds and stop Queen Phobia before she achieves her ultimate goal, a world dictated by fear and suffering.
  • Mindy (voiced by Judy Alice Lee) - an anxious and nervous perfectionist preteen whose dreams are being haunted by the Fearians as she is visited by NiGHTS and helps NiGHTS in stopping the Fearians and Queen Phobia. She is also an athlete who had recently gone through a knee injury, with this injury and the fears of not being able to do what she loves haunting her.
  • Kyle (voiced by Robbie Daymond) - a somewhat grouchy and aloof preteen who is also visited by NiGHTS and thrust into helping them save Nightopia from the grasp of Queen Phobia and her army. He wants to become a songwriter but has been suffering through writer's block while also thinking that he shouldn't ask for help and do things himself.

NPCs[]

  • Owl (voiced by Troy Baker) - an elderly and wise yet somewhat grouchy owl who guides NiGHTS and their human companions throughout their adventures, as he learns of Queen Phobia, and decides to be a mentor for Mindy and Kyle on their quest to save Nightopia, although he can be quite tired of NiGHTS' more mischievous and troublesome nature.
  • The Dream Mother (voiced by Allegra Clark) - the calm and mysterious creator of Nightopia and the Nightmareans who resides inside of the Castle of Night alongside Owl as she once banished Queen Phobia and is the true ruler of Nightopia, entrusting NiGHTS as well as Mindy and Kyle to save the day and stop what Queen Phobia has in store.

Bosses[]

  • Queen Phobia (voiced by Laura Bailey) - the flamboyant and narcissistic yet bratty Queen of a small subsect of Nightmareans known as the Fearians who has reawakened from her banishment as she intends on taking over Nightopia and bring the world into an era of fear, having to deal with NiGHTS who she sees as an annoying threat to her ideal world.
  • Arachna (voiced by Cristina Vee) - a spider Fearian who represents the fear of spiders as she is quite egotistical and obsessive over her own looks, wanting to prove herself as the cutest and most divine spider out there. She is capable of firing out balls of web that NiGHTS has to throw back at her, being quite massive in size as well.
  • Dr. Hampton Pokes (voiced by Liam O'Brien) - a pig-doctor Fearian who represents the fear of needles as he is quite mentally insane and obsessed with needles to the point of testing them on his toy dolls, with him wearing a suit that allows him to throw dozens of needles. He’s capable of throwing needles that NiGHTS has to avoid in order to not get hurt.
  • Prince Kobi (voiced by Damien Haas) - a chaotic and mad clown Fearian who represents the fear of clowns as he is quite eccentric and prone for pulling harmful pranks, as he rides a flying carpet, and throws explosive pies which NiGHTS must avoid, just wanting to cause chaos and mayhem throughout Nightopia with no one to stop him.
  • Nezumi (voiced by Cassandra Lee Morris) - a swarm of rats-like Fearian who represents the fear of rats and mice, as she is quite nihilistic and easily bored, being capable of controlling shadows and leaping long distances while also being able to move around quickly thanks to being a massive swarm of rats out to torment.

Enemies[]

  • Fearian Floaters - a small ring-like variant of Fearians who float around in flight levels, noticing NiGHTS and attempts to bump into them to take off their health.
  • Fearian Crawlers - small spider-like variant of the Fearians who serve under Arachna, being capable of spitting webs to try and freeze NiGHTS in place, also being only found in flight levels.

Gameplay[]

The game is split into two gameplay styles: NiGHTS which is more open ended flight levels with the capability to do several stunts and tricks in the air while each level has some sort of mission, with NiGHTS being capable of grabbing and throwing objects or enemies. NiGHTS now has a health bar with the game ending when their bar is gone, being able to heal as well. There are also the tweens segments where depending on the level, you play as Mindy or Kyle and do on ground platforming as similar to NiGHTS there is some mission. However, unlike NiGHTS, they can't grab enemies but instead Mindy can kick a ball as Kyle can play a violin, with both being useful in eliminating enemies and solving certain puzzles. Each world has nine levels, two for Mindy, two for Kyle and four for NiGHTS as well as a boss level fought as NiGHTS with there being ten worlds plus an eleventh final world.

  • Castle of Night - the hub area of the game where you can fly around as NiGHTS and either access any of the worlds or do side missions and challenges from the residents of the Castle of Night.
  • School Meadows - a strange mix of a school and a grassy field area which is the first unlocked world with it having several elements from Mindy and Kyle's life.
    • Sports Fields - a surreal looking field area located in the School Meadows where Mindy has to find four balls dotted across the level and bring it back to the center, with it flashing back to her time as a sports player before her injury.

    • So, Afraid of Spiders? - the boss level of School Meadows which involves NiGHTS combatting Arachna in a giant cave area in the School Meadows.
  • Hospital Fear - a giant and freaky hospital area that is one of three worlds unlocked after beating School Meadows as it has a freaky and scary hospital theme.
    • Main Hall - an eerily quiet hallway located in Hospital Fear where Mindy must avoid mask-wearing mannequins who wield surgical tools in order to overcome her fear of surgical procedures while having to restart the power to the hospital.
