My Big Fat Stupid Diary is an American adult animated series that was created by Mike Judge and Susie Lewis that aired on MTV from September 7, 1995 to June 15, 2005. It got three movies, one of them being a theatrical one called My Big Fat Movie, The other two being TV movies called Big Fat Stupid Vacation and Big Fat Stupid Graduation released in 2000, 2002, and 2004.

Synopsis

Jennasis ”Jen” Oliver explores the world around her by writing in her diary.

Main

  • Jennasis ”Jen” Oliver (voiced by Grey DeLisle) - A snarky, sarcastic, and brash teen who writes in her diary.
  • Heather Adams (voiced by Nancy Cartwright) - Jen’s sassy and wealthy best friend who is into fashion, music, and boys.
  • Brittany and Whitney Oliver (voiced by Cherie Hannigan) - Jen’s little twin sisters who are identical and different from each other. Brittany likes boyish things while Whitney likes girly things.
  • Laura Oliver (voiced by Tress MacNeille) - Jen, Brittany, and Whitney’s mother, who is known for her good cooking and is cursed at making muffins and pie.
  • George Oliver (voiced by Corey Burton) - Jen, Brittany, and Whitney’s father and Laura's husband, who often makes fun of pop culture references.

  • Talbot Washington (voiced by Quinton Flynn) - A character who was introduced in the second season. He's pretty popular with everyone including girls. He is known as Jen’s love interest then later boyfriend.

  • Matilda Wilcox (voiced by Lucy Liu) - A very eccentric teen who is often wearing psychedelic clothing.

  • Fabiola Canola (voiced by Alanna Ubach) - Carla’s second in command and says burritos and pizza come from her ancestors.
  • Shawna Howards (voiced by Cree Summer) - The gossiper of the school and knows everyone's secret.
  • Bertha ”Scoots” McCarthy (voiced by Kath Soucie) - The female daredevil who often challenges Bryan.
  • Tyrone Johnson (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson) - He is used as a running gag, and later became a meme. He is seen as a dancer, his favorite dance is the Macarena.
  • Brianna Gabóur (voiced by Lacey Chabert) - A girl from Quebec who loves chocolates and the finer things in life.

  • Chili Peppers (voiced by Maurice LaMarche) - The leader of the group, speaks with a southern accent.
  • Orange Juice (voiced by Olivia Hack) - The rebel of the group. She has bulimia.
  • Sunshine Rays (voiced by Elizabeth Daily) - The greedy one of the group.
  • Green Leaf (voiced by Bernadette Peters) - The musical and sarcastic one of the group.
  • Drippy Dewdrop (also voiced by Jess Harnell) - The lazy one of the group.
  • Midnight Shimmer (voiced by Tara Charendoff) - The comic relief of the group. She is very goofy making up stuff such as Chile flavored makeup.
  • Ocean Waves (voiced by Debi Derryberry) - The prideful one of the group.

Antagonists

  • Principal Frinkle (voiced by David Schwimmer and Jeff Bennett) - The mean principal of Donaldson High who wants to turn the students into an army of more intelligent students.
  • Mrs Flamden (voiced by Mona Marshall) - The science teacher who has often tried to kill the students.
  • Melanie Goldberg (voiced by Lisa Kudrow and Hynden Walch) A kind young woman is the receptionist, she has to put up with her uncle’s evil plan.
  • Lady Alondra Montgomery (voiced by Barbara Goodson) - The drama teacher who used to love children, but now hates them.
  • Doctor Holloway (voiced by Rob Paulsen) - The therapist and guidance counselor who often gets irritated with children.
  • Nurse Alexa Shimmer (voiced by Julie Brown) - An attractive and very dumb school nurse who has no clue about anything. She is Midnight’s older sister.

Other Adults

  • Lucille Oliver (voiced by Florence Henderson ) - George’s mother, Laura’s mother-in-law, and the girls’ grandmother who taught Laura and the girls how to cook. She dies in the Season 4 finale.
  • Mary-Ann McCarthy (voiced by Jennifer Elise Cox) - Bertha’s older sister who hosts a tonight show.
  • Cloreen “CLOROX WIPES” Jameson (voiced by Jennifer Love Hewitt) - A news reporter who’s name is used mockery hence her nickname Clorox Wipes.
  • Mackerel Lawrence (voiced by Seth Green) - A guy who is used as running gag being mistaken for Peter Brady of the Brady Bunch.

Production

Back in 1992, The Fox Broadcasting Company was offered in making a series about the world towards a teenage girl’s point of view. Mike Judge and Susie Lewis had an idea: What if a girl gives us her perspective on the world by writing in a journal. They made a pilot called: Jen’s Diary, It didn't do so well with test audiences, so FOX rejected it. However, MTV called Judge and Lewis saying they would like to see the pilot. And they approved of it. In 1994, the series was greenlit.

Animation

For the first 4 seasons the animation was outsource to Tokyo Movie Shinsha in Japan. Seasons 5-7 used AKOM Animation in Korea.

Reception

Critical reception

The show got mostly mixed to positive reviews from critics, praising the show for it’s charming storytelling, the writing and the cast. It holds a ”97%” on Rotten Tomatoes, a 9.4/10 on imdB, and a 100 on MetaCritic.
