“ | They really are back in action. Buckle up for a retold adventure of looney (& angsty!) proportions in "Murder Drones: M.I.A. - A Looney Tunes Movie", directed by Pete Browngardt, Joe Dante, & Liam Vickers. Based on the film "Looney Tunes: Back in Action" by Dante & the web pilot "Murder Drones" by Vickers, this movie reintroduces the Looney Tunes & what they can really do with the iconic slapstick & chaos that made them famous, & introduce a bunch of new characters (who are very cute, too!). But how can a dark & desolate show about robots going up against each other for... reasons... work with something as crazy & loud as a wacky cast of characters like the Looney Tunes? Trust us, we'll make it work. Expecting a bunch of big name celebrities to head the cast? Not in this film. Because this time, we're putting real voice actors front & center. This time, the spotlight is on the voices of Elsie Lovelock ("Hazbin Hotel", upcoming "Murder Drones"), Michael Kovach ("Hazbin Hotel", upcoming "Murder Drones"), Eric Bauza (TV's "The Powerpuff Girls", "Transformers: Robots in Disguise"), Jeff Bergman ("Space Jam: A New Legacy", TV's "Amphibia"), Nola Klop ("Fazbear & Friends", upcoming "Murder Drones"), Bob Bergen ("Space Jam", TV's "Duck Dodgers"), Billy West (TV's "Duck Dodgers", "The Looney Tunes Show"), & Keith Ferguson (TV's "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends", "Wander over Yonder"). Master director Dante (the "Gremlins" films, "Looney Tunes: Back in Action") is joined by Browngardt ("Looney Tunes Cartoons", TV's "Uncle Grandpa") & Vickers (Netflix's "Glitch Techs", upcoming "Murder Drones"). The 2 also wrote the film alongside Kevin Costello ("Bad Trip", "Tom & Jerry"), David Gemmill ("Fanboy & Chum-chum", "Teen Titans Go! to the Movies"), Alex Kirwan, (TV's "My Life as a Teenage Robot", "Wander over Yonder"), Ryan Kramer ("Looney Tunes Cartoons", TV's "Ben 10"), Jason Reicher (TV's "DuckTales", "The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse"), & John Whittington ("The LEGO® Batman Movie", upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”), from whom you can expect (& thank for) a lot of laugh-out-loud moments from. Browngardt also serves as an executive producer alongside Spike Brandt (TV's "Duck Dodgers", TV's "The Looney Tunes Show"), Tony Cervone (TV's "Duck Dodgers", "The Looney Tunes Show"), Kevin Lerdwichagul ("Meta Runner", "Sunset Paradise", Luke Lerdwichagul ("Meta Runner", "Sunset Paradise"), & Sam Register ("Looney Tunes Cartoons", TV's "Transformers: Animated"). Kirwan is also the film's supervising producer. The film's behind-the-scenes crew includes director of photography Brandon Trost ("The Diary of a Teenage Girl", upcoming "Sonic the Hedgehog 2"), animation producers Allison Abbate ("The LEGO® Movie", "Tom & Jerry") & Troy Nethercott ("Space Jam: A New Legacy", "Wonder Park"), production designer Alex McDowell ("Bee Movie", "Man of Steel"), editors Bob Ducsay ("Godzilla: King of the Monsters", "Space Jam: A New Legacy"), & Debra Neil-Fisher ("Sonic the Hedgehog", "Transformers: The Last Knight"), costume designers Jim Jarosz ("Demo Reel", "Nostalgia Critic") & Mary E. Vogt ("Batman Returns", the "Men in Black" films), & musical composers AJ DiSpirito ("Meta Runner", upcoming "Murder Drones"), Carl Johnson ("Looney Tunes Cartoons", "Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin"), & Joshua Moshier ("Looney Tunes Cartoons", Apple TV+'s "The Shrink Next Door"). ~ The film's official description. |
Murder Drones: M.I.A. - A Looney Tunes Movie is a 2021 live-action/animated action-adventure buddy comedy film featuring characters from the Looney Tunes & Murder Drones IPs. It is produced by Glitch Productions, Warner Bros. Animation, & Warner Bros. Pictures, with the latter distributing the movie. It is a remake of the movie Looney Tunes: Back in Action, while also being based off of the Murder Drones web pilot. The film is directed by Peter Browngardt, Joe Dante, & Liam Vickers, & written by Browngardt, Vickers, Kevin Costello, David Gemmill, Alex Kirwan, Ryan Kramer, Jason Reicher, & John Whittington. It stars the voices of Elsie Lovelock, Michael Kovach, Jeff Bergman, Nola Klop, Annie Mumolo, Tom Kenny, Keith Ferguson, & Eric Bauza, with Bob Bergen, Eric Goldberg, & Billy West returning as their characters from the original film, & Chad Damiani in a leading live-action role. In this movie, 3 robots from the future are teleported to the year 2021 as they try to make their way back home while also accompanying the Tunes in stopping a world-threatening plot.
The film was developed when Browngardt was working on Looney Tunes Cartoons in 2019, envisioning a remake of Back in Action that exclusively had the Tunes as the main cast, while also considering having Dante return as director. Dante & Vickers were eventually brought in to direct alongside Browngardt. He, Costello, Vickers, & Whittington wrote the base script of the movie, with Gemmill, Kirwan, Kramer, & Reicher adding on to it. General filming ran from August to September 2020. AJ DiSpirito, Carl Johnson, & Joshua Moshier composed the film's score. DiSpirito originally worked on Glitch Productions' various other projects, while Johnson & Moshier previously collaborated on Looney Tunes Cartoons.
Murder Drones: M.I.A. - A Looney Tunes Movie first premiered exclusively at the Steven J. Ross Theater inside of the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, California on November 1, 2021, & released in the United States nationwide on November 12, 2021. It was an unexpected box-office success, grossing $897.6 million on a budget of $85 million, making it the highest-grossing film in the Looney Tunes franchise to date. It received generally positive reviews from critics, who expressed criticism for its partial reusage of plot points & gags from the screnplay of Looney Tunes: Back in Action, but praised the rest of the film's aspects, including the characters (such as the faithfulness of the Tunes to their source material), comedy, & voice acting (particularly Lovelock & Bauza's performances). Another crossover between the 2 properties, titled The Day Copper-9 Stands Still, was released on October 30, 2026.
Plot[]
Former JCJenson Worker Drone Uzi Doorman starts plotting the demise of humanity after years of endless torture they have inflicted on her kind. Her plans are interrupted, however, by a strange portal that sends her & fellow Disassembly Drones N & V to the Warner Bros. studio lot, where they encounter Daffy Duck, who has just been fired from the company, causing a ruckus. On the flipside, Daffy agrees to help the drones get back home as they simultaneously go on a mission to find the Blue Monkey & keep it away from ACME. Without Daffy, plans for future WB cartoons go awry, so Bugs Bunny teams up with Porky Pig & Tina Russo to get him back.
Meanwhile, the crew ends up in Las Vegas only to be met with a clue to the Blue Monkey as they're pursued by Yosemite Sam & his goons, who are tied to the ACME corporation. They eventually manage to flee them after hitching a ride with Bugs, Porky & Tina. Stopping by the desert for the night, Uzi snoops in a ill-conceived conversation between Bugs & Daffy. The next morning, Wile E. Coyote is tasked to stop the team, but fails. The heroes stumble upon Area 52, where the plot to destroy the Blue Monkey to save humanity conflicts with Uzi's plans against humans, but luckily, Daffy is able to convince her that not all humans are horrible people, leading her to drop her grudge. By that time however, Marvin the Martian breaks himself & a few more aliens out of imprisonment, leading them to get away before they're stuck on lockdown.
They get to Paris, where they locate the Blue Monkey in Africa & deter Elmer Fudd from getting the card. Later, they manage to save Tina from getting kidnapped by Cecil Turtle, who has revealed to have been working for ACME, & Beaky Buzzard. Once at Africa, they have accidentally led ACME to the location & are teleported to their headquarters where the chairman coerces the heroes to hand over the diamond. Handing it over to Marvin, who makes off with it, Daffy snatches it from him, & alongside Uzi, N, V, Porky, Tina, & Bugs try to zip away from him to prevent him from getting his hands on the Blue Monkey before they destroy it. However, Marvin manages to catch up, leading to a chase in space, & eventually a final battle that sees the heroes fight him & destroy the satellite & the diamond before returning to Earth. Uzi, N, & V make it back to Copper-9 with Bugs & Daffy's help, while the latter returns to work at Warner Bros.

Production[]
Development[]
Minor plans for a Back in Action rerelease were being considered in early 2019, but were mostly shot down by Warner Bros. executives due to the box-office failure of the movie. Peter Browngardt, who was then working on the Looney Tunes Cartoons series for HBO Max, had plans for a remake of the movie, with him & Joe Dante as directors. Later that year, Browngardt pitched the idea to Warner Bros., who reluctantly decided to greenlight the film with a budget of $85 million.
Pre-production[]
This time, Dante was promised ample amount of creative control over the project, with some of his vision being reimplemented. Eric Goldberg returned to direct the 2D hand-drawn animation alongside Spike Brandt, Joey Capps, & Patrick Delage. Details about the movie were strictly kept under wraps (especially leaks being prevented by the tight security system of the production) until official promo material started being released.
However, hints were dropped about the movie months prior to the release of the main trailer. On October 31, 2020, news erupted about another Looney Tunes film being released by 2021 was announced, with Browngardt as director, & Eric Bauza, Jeff Bergman, Keith Ferguson, & Billy West as part of the cast. On February 19, 2021, Elsie Lovelock, Michael Kovach, Nola Klop, & Chad Damiani were announced to join the cast, while Liam Vickers was to join as a director. Shortly after the premiere of the 2nd trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy, Eric Bauza teased on his Instagram with the caption "Space Jam 2 isn't the only movie Daffy will be in this year... 🦆🤖".
Filming[]
Second-unit filming for the animated characters & principal photography for the live-action actors both commenced in August 2020 & wrapped up around early September of the same year (though the former finished earlier), under CoViD-19 safety protocols. Locations where filming took place include the WB lot, headquarters, & soundstages in Burbank; Las Vegas, Paris, Africa, & the Mojave desert in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, & California.
Throughout this stage of the movie, IMAX 3D cameras were used as the main filming technology. To make the production smoother, voice recording sessions also took place around this time, alongside motion capture for the choreographed fight scenes. The voice actors recorded their lines in a custom trailer vehicle near the filming locations.
Post-production[]
The traditional animation was handled in-house by Warner Bros. Animation, making this their first film to have its 2D animation produced inside their own studio only. Meanwhile, GLITCH Productions handled the CGI of the movie. The film's music score, composed by AJ DiSpirito, who worked on the Murder Drones pilot, & Joshua Moshier & Carl Johnson, who worked on Looney Tunes Cartoons, was conducted in Warner Bros.' facilities.
After the premiere of Space Jam: A New Legacy, where the main trailer was screened, the movie was officially confirmed, alongside Dante's involvement in the film as director. Production for the film ended in June 11, 2021, a few days after the second trailer for A New Legacy.
Future[]
Post-release, Joe Dante revealed there are no plans for a sequel, & has shot down pitches from the executives for one. He explained that there was never meant to be a sequel to the movie & felt that both this movie & the original Back in Action ended in such a way that guarantees no follow-ups, feeling they were good enough as standalones. Nevertheless, this did not stop more crossovers between the 2 properties being made. One called The Day Copper-9 Stands Still, released on October 30, 2026.
Music[]
The soundtrack, titled The Merrie Melodies of Murder Drones: M.I.A. - A Looney Tunes Movie, was released on November 12 alongside the film. It includes the original score from composers AJ DiSpirito (who worked on the Murder Drones pilot's music), Joshua Moshier, & Carl Johnson (both of whom composed scores for Looney Tunes Cartoons), original songs by The Stupendium, Elsie Lovelock, Nola Klop, & Moira dela Torre, & covers of some existing songs, courtesy of Eric Bauza & Michael Kovach.

Marketing[]
The teaser poster & teaser were originally going to be both released alongside the Murder Drones series teaser, but they decided to keep the film even more of a secret. The movie's official trailer released on July 12, 2021, during the world premiere of Space Jam: A New Legacy, promoted by directors Pete Browngardt, Joe Dante, & Liam Vickers, & voice actors Elsie Lovelock, Michael Kovach, Nola Klop, Bob Bergen, Jeff Bergman, & Eric Bauza, the latter 3 also having worked on A New Legacy, after it was screened. Accompanying this was a video that featured Lovelock & Kovach interviewing people involved in Space Jam 2 to promote the film.
Shortly after the movie's premiere in Los Angeles, the teaser trailer was released online. A few days later, the teaser poster came out with the official trailer being released to the public on July 16, when Space Jam 2 was released domestically in America. The second trailer released on August 29, 2021, a few days before Foghorn Leghorn's 75th anniversary debut. It features a lot more focus on Bugs' minor subplot in the movie that sees him on a quest to find Daffy. The final trailer, which was structured more in the veins of the main official trailer, was released on October 10, 2021 at the film's panel at New York Comic Con.
Other marketing strategies for the movie included partnerships with brands such as Wal-Mart (who return for a product placement cameo as they did in the original movie), Hot Topic, & a lot more others. The film had accounts on Facebook, X (then called Twitter), Instagram, & YouTube, while also being promoted on the various social media accounts of Glitch Productions & Warner Bros. Multiple pre-release featurettes were released featuring the film crew, more prominently the voice actors, who talk about the characters they voice, the movie, alongside other things.
The voice actors proved to be a very big driving force of the movie's marketing. An episode of Variety Studio's Actors on Actors featured Eric Bauza & Elsie Lovelock, an episode of Hot Ones featured the latter (both of which were filmed during voice recording for the film due to Lovelock coming from the United Kingdom), & an episode of The Shop was released akin to Bugs Bunny's "interview" that promoted Space Jam: A New Legacy, but with Jeff Bergman, Bugs' voice actor for the movie, being directly interviewed instead. The voice actors were further promoted as they were invited to talk shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
5 songs were produced for the movie: "We're a Bit Looney" by The Stupendium, "Flyin' Like a Duck" & “Am I Alone in This?” by Elsie Lovelock, "Clearly the Psycho" by Lovelock & Nola Klop & "Sirang Entablado" by Moira dela Torre. Music videos for most of those songs were made & published online as pre-release material, as well as 1 for "Shake Your Coconuts", the original film's credits song, with clips from the movie & its crew goofing off (mostly involving them dancing). Additionally, Eric Bauza recorded a cover of "Daffy Duck's Rhapsody" called "Daffy Duck's New Rhapsody". All of these (except for "Am I Alone in This?" & "Clearly the Psycho") were released as singles before the release of the film. Meanwhile, action figures & plushies for the movie were made by Hasbro, Funko, alongside other corporations, in a deal with Warner Bros. McDonald's also released tie-in Happy Meals featuring Looney Tunes characters who appear in the movie, except for Lola Bunny & Tina Russo in order to keep their appearances a secret. An exclusive chat theme based on the movie was added to Messenger during its' release. During the film's official release window, exclusive posters were given at various cinema companies.

Reception[]
Box office[]
Murder Drones: M.I.A. - A Looney Tunes Movie grossed $897.6 million against a budget of $85 million, with $394.6 million in the domestic box office & $503 million internationally, becoming the 3rd highest-grossing film of 2021. Director Joe Dante projected that the film would do worse (specifically $37-45 million), however, thanks to sporadic marketing, the box office numbers grew, exceeding his & the crew's expectations. It was estimated to be a moderate success, projected to gross about $350 million during its entire theatrical run.
The movie was released in cinemas alongside Tick, Tick... Boom! (which had a limited release) & Apex. It was projected to make $1-2 million during the opening weekend to lower expectations despite the abundant marketing. However, the movie made $16 million on its' 1st day, making $2.9 million in Thursday night previews. All in all, the movie made $18 million during it's opening weekend domestically, & $19 million globally, with a total of $37 million.
It made $42 million on its' second weekend. Throughout its' run, the film ranked 1st at the box office but slowly decreased with the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The movie ranked 2nd starting by its' 6th weekend, 3rd on its' 10th, & dropped out on the box office ranking 7th. This marked 1 of Warner Bros.' biggest release windows of all time & the studio's most financially successful film of the year, surpassing Godzilla vs. Kong.
Critical reception[]
The film received a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with the consensus reading, "Even with some Android friends from another world, Murder Drones: M.I.A. - A Looney Tunes Movie understands the value of these timeless characters & really puts them (& by extension Joe Dante) back in action." On Metacritic, the film received 62 out of 100, showing "generally favorable" reviews. The movie gained an "A" grade in CinemaScore, a 3/5 rating in Common Sense Media, received an overall positive score of 63% in PostTrak, etc.
AwardsDaily praised the film its comedy, characters, & managing to balance the tones of the Murder Drones & Looney Tunes IPs, calling it "brilliantly angsty & looney at the same time". Washington Post described the movie as "1 of Warner Bros.' best movies this year", & commended the film for utilizing the timelessness of the Looney Tunes characters. IGN gave it a 7 out of 10, commenting "While it's easily a 'rinse & repeat' of Looney Tunes: Back in Action at first glance, the film tries to step out of its shadow & go wilder than that movie's ever been, harnessing the unchained power that made the Tunes endearing for 90 years & counting, while also making room for the bleak & mysterious new world of Murder Drones."

Trivia[]
- This is the only Looney Tunes movie to gain a PG-13 rating, owing to the dark themes of Murder Drones & the increased anarchy & violence akin to the original shorts.
- The original draft of the movie had a few differences from the final version released in cinemas:
- The film was originally called Murder Drones: Back in Action (A Looney Tunes Movie), but the crew changed it to its' current title, reasoning that it felt more "fitting" to the plot of the film & to further differentiate it from its' predecessor.
- Uzi was planned to be the only drone involved in the film's plot, until she was joined by N, & then both of them were joined by V in the final version.
- Even earlier into the film's production, the ACME chairman would be cut out entirely, but the writers thought of retaining him in the final movie to help with Uzi's character arc & her initial vendetta against humanity.
- The movie would've been fully animated instead of a live-action/animated hybrid if the decision to cut the ACME chairman pulled through, with Marvin being the main villain.
- Uzi, N, & V were originally going to be transported to Earth in 2021 as live-action humans, portrayed by their voice actors.
- As indicated above, Uzi & N had rare screentime in the deleted water tower scene above.
- V, Porky, & Tina were originally going to have minor/supporting roles before being promoted to the main cast. In Porky's case, he was going to have as much screen time as he did in the original.
- The film was going to end with Uzi & N falling through a portal that led them back home, with an ending more akin to the original movie. In the final movie, though, the "That's all, Folks!", scene was moved later in the movie, ultimately becoming a post-credit scene.
- The aforementioned "That's all, Folks!" scene was supposed to play out differently, originally it was going to have Porky say "Go home, folks" again, before it was changed to the film crew saying the line all together to close off the credits, followed by an actual ending card akin to the 1 featured in "Porky's Duck Hunt", Daffy's debut cartoon.
- Plans for the cast:
- Brendan Fraser, Jenna Elfman, Timothy Dalton, Joan Cusack, Bill Goldberg, Heather Locklear, & Steve Martin were planned to return as their respective characters before they were adapted out (while Martin was replaced with Damiani) to give more focus to the Tunes & tell the same story with a few twists to the original. Cusack & Goldberg's characters, Mother & Mr. Smith, were replaced by Dr. Moron & Cecil Turtle, respectively. Although, Fraser & Elfman were only in 1 promotional poster & video for the movie, & the former's archived recordings as Taz & the Tasmanian She-Devil were re-used.
- Ricky Gervais was considered to be the ACME chairman, but this specific plan was scrapped in order to save costs for the rest of the production team, subsequently leading to Chad Damiani's casting.
- Rob Walker & Malcolm Ray were going to replace the Stanton twins as the CEOs of WB, in roles similar to their "Analyst" characters from the web series Nostalgia Critic. They are instead relegated to being scientist extras in Area 52.
- Brandon Rogers' character Bobby Worst was planned to replace the ACME chairman as the film's main antagonist at 1 point.
