Kamala Khan

Ms. Marvel (real name Kamala Khan) is a fictional character and superheroine from Marvel Comics.

History

Early Life

Kamala Khan was born and lived an ordinary life in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her mother and father were Pakistani immigrants and practicing Muslims, Muneeba and Yusuf Khan. While Kamala was proud of her heritage and faith, many of her peers used this difference to ostracize and bully her. Kamala found solace from this in her passions for video games, fan fiction, and in particular costumed superheroes. She especially admired Captain Marvel and the Avengers.

Terrigenesis

One evening, far away from Kamala, Terrigen Mist was dispersed across the entire globe, including Kamala's hometown as the girl was walking home. Kamala began to feel disoriented by the mist's effects before she fell unconscious on the sidewalk and engulfed into her Terrigen cocoon.

Ms. Marvel

When Kamala emerged from her Terrigenesis, she discovered that she had gained shape-shifting abilities. She soon met Inferno, who told her about her Inhuman DNA. Shocked but excited by their new powers, the two teenagers decided to use them to become heroes. Kamala adopted her idol Captain Marvel's former code name "Ms. Marvel".

Powers and Abilities

Since Kamala is a human with latent Inhuman heritage whose powers were activated by the Terrigen Bomb, causing her to become a polymorph, which grants her the following abilities:

  • Shapeshifting: Kamala's most prominent power is her ability to stretch, expand, contract, shrink, enlarge, or compress any part of her body into any shape or size the situation demands of her, such as enlarging her hands to spank a villain or effectively changing herself into a living grappling hook to rescue Captain America and Iron Man. She also gains the proportionate strength, speed, durability, and agility of any shape or size she is in.
  • Size Alteration: Kamala can through unknown means, adjust her height and stature adding upon her already impressive physical abilities. Either shrinking to the size of an action figure to growing as tall as a building structure, such as Skyscrapers and Mansions.
  • Accelerated Healing Factor: Kamala can heal very quickly when injured. She simply brushed off Inferno's fire, which under normal circumstances would have left a lasting burn mark. However, the more she heals, the less access she has to her polymorph abilities, so she has to return to her true form to recover completely.

Weaknesses

  • Electricity: Electric shocks weaken her body's elasticity.
  • Healing Factor: Kamala can only heal her injuries when in her true form, leaving her vulnerable as she heals. In addition, the more she heals, the less malleable her cells become, and as a result she must be careful with this power.

Equipment

  • Biokinetic Polymer Suit: Invented by Bruno as part of his scholarship application to Rutgers University, when the polymer (or "super snot") is applied to a flexible substance, the substance becomes extremely malleable. The increased elasticity allows Ms. Marvel to focus less on transforming her clothing during her metamorphoses. Unfortunately, the suit is highly susceptible to damage by exposure to water.
  • Compartment Bracelet: A series of bangles with hollow compartments inside, modified by Bruno into a single bracelet worn on Kamala's left arm to hold her cell phone and other small items. They were originally used by Kamala's great-grandmother Aisha to smuggle money out of Bombay during Partition, and had since been passed down to her daughter and granddaughter, Muneeba.
  • Locator Pendant: A gift from Captain Marvel during the incursion, this necklace allowed Kamala to signal Carol in an emergency with just the push of a button.
  • Stormranger Nanosuit: A special costume worn by Kree Stormranger 20-14, a member of the Kree whom the Saffans claimed as their "Destined One". The suit was left behind on a special space station used by the former slave masters of the Saffans with the intent of another Stormranger to retrieve. While it is designed for those with Kree blood, this seems to also extend to Inhumans. The full extent of the suit is of yet unknown.

  • Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel is one of the titular protagonists in the crossover graphic novel The Made Equal Saga: Ms. Marvel and Bumblebee. The novel focuses on Kamala forming a bonding friendship with Autobot scout Bumblebee upon discovering he was posing as a Camaro which looked like Kamala's brother Aamir's new car.
  • A version of Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel appears in the comic book storyline The Amazing Avengers.
  • A version of Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel appears in Ultimate Marvel: Earth-2. While still being an Inhuman with Size/Shape-shifting powers who idolizes Captain Marvel, this version of Kamala is shown to have been raised by her mother Disha in more exotic places of the U.S.A., such as a beach house in Hanakapiai Beach, Kauai, Hawaii, and a nearby tribal village from where her father Yusuf came from. She is also the youngest of Ava Khan / White Tiger's half-sisters and Gwen Stacy's best friend.
  • Ms. Marvel also appears as one of the three main protagonists in Comic Con Incorporated, where she is a new roomer in the titular fictional hotel exacting to experience the best of the attractions she was introduced to. She is also best friends with the other protagonists Sabrina Spellman (who is her roommate) and Terra. During her summer activities, she is most occasionally shown wearing a one-piece leotard swimsuit with details of her superhero suit (in most times, with or without her mask).

  • She also appears as one of the core protagonists in Iago PUC's Avengers Animated Trilogy (Force from the Infinity, The Symbiote War and Inhumans Unleashed), voiced by Auli'i Cravalho. Along with being a expanded member and trainee of the Avengers, Kamala is also introduced in the trilogy as Peter Parker / Spider-Man's primary love interest.
  • Ms. Marvel is also in Avengers Unleashed, voiced again by Kathreen Khavari. Introduced to the series in episode "I'm Only Inhuman", she appears prominently in the series as one of the students of Avengers Academy. She is close friends with Nova and Kid Arachnid.
  • Kamala is also in Iago PUC's version of Marvel's Spider-Man, voiced again by Kathreen Khavari. In the show, she is a founding member of Spider-Man's team, the Champions, and is in a relationship with Miles Morales, although they decide to keep it in secret from most people except their teammates.
    • In Season 2, she is revealed to have been orphaned by the attack of Kree soldiers who killed her parents while searching for Oscorp's technology in New Jersey, for which Kamala blames Norman Osborn, who only cared about his tech. In aftermath, Kamala was raised by Betty Brant as her own. Later, during a battle between her teammates and Ronan's crew for the Power siblings' lives, Kamala earns a new nanotech suit (similar to the one she wore in The Magnificent Ms. Marvel), giving her suit a new look.
    • She also appears in the show's spin-off web-series Marvel's Ant-Girl as a supporting character.
    • She also appears in the Hulu-exclusive spin-off series Marvel's Astonishing Thunderbolts. While she is as disgusted as Spider-Man is of the Thunderbolts' destructive and violent nature, Ms. Marvel is also shown to be in good terms with Gwenpool, although she occasionally keeps wondering who Gwenpool is talking to whenever Gwen breaks the fourth wall.
    • Kamala is also in the crossover TV movie Marvel's Transformers: Assemble and Roll Out. She along with the Marvel superheroes team up with the Autobots to defeat Darkspine and stop a war between the super-villains and the Decepticons. She is shown to have a good relationship with Bumblebee.
  • Ms. Marvel appears in Marvel's Spider-Man: Webbed Champion, voiced again by Kathreen Khavari. Her story follows the events of episode "School of Hard Knocks", and goes on in the new episodes:
    • In “City of Heroes, Part 4: More Than Human”, she helps Spider-Man secure Kit Renner the Werefox from Magneto, Exile and William Stryker. During the episode, she confesses that she is a trainee of the Avengers, not officially a member, a fact which Spider-Man had already deduced due to his belief that the Avengers "would not recruit teenagers just because they are superheroes".
    • In “Brainstorm”, she is among Spider-Man's friends who help stop the riots in New York (which are orchestrated by the Master Planner), while Spider-Man himself deals with the Master Planner (revealed to be Otto Octavius having transferred his consciousness into the Living Brain).
    • In “Seeds of Life”, Ms. Marvel assists the Avengers on a mission at a HYDRA base where Viper is overseeing the creation of new human clones to be part of Red Skull's army. At the moment, while getting lost in the battle and walking alone to find out where the clone lab is, she stumbles across Spider-Man (who arrived there to finish his parents' last project, which includes Mantis, and apprehend Norman Osborn, who is operating as the Green Goblin in Red Skull's behalf) and Black Panther (who arrived there while pursuing Madame Masque, the last remaining member of the Shadow Council, after hearing of her plans with Arnim Zola's technology). She later helps the heroes battle Red Skull's HYDRA forces and Madame Masque. After Red Skull is hit by Goblin's glider which crashes him into Madame Masque's ship and kills him, Ms. Marvel uses one of Jarvis' teleportation rings to teleport herself and Stormranger with the Goblin back to New York, where the two and the rest of Spider-Man's friends proceed to attack him until AC-5 broadcasts the evidences of Osborn's crimes and his identity of Green Goblin to all over the city to see. After Osborn is arrested, Ms. Marvel decides to be a member of Spider-Man's newly formed team (called the Champions) until she feels ready to join the Avengers again. She and the others also form a new friendship with Peter Parker's sister Teresa.
    • Also appearing in the “Legendary Universes” arc, she and the Champions join Spider-Man's journey across alternate dimensions to uncover the origins of the Parker Projects' sources and be prepared for their battle against Regent by destroying the discarded Oscorp products he seeks for. Kamala is among the teammates who join Spider-Man's journey in “Legendary Universes, Part 4: Heroes in Disguise”, where she and the team join forces with the Autobots to defeat Predaking's Kree Armada and Megatron's Decepticon crew. During the episode, she befriends Bumblebee, with whom she is most partnered with.
  • Kamala also appears in Iago PUC's version of The Spectacular Spider-Man Season 3, voiced again by Kathreen Khavari.
  • Kamala appears in Marvel: All New, All Different Chronicles, voiced again by Kathreen Khavari. Her origins and costume are the same as in the Ultimate Marvel: Earth-2 series, except she is not related to Mary Jane Watson, although they still view each other as sisters. First appearing in the Avengers' arc, she appears as a recurring character in Spider-Man's arc as a member of the New Champions. She is also one of Liz Danvers Rogers' classmates in Bilderberg Academy, and best friends with Peter Parker's sister Teresa, Natasha Romanoff's daughter Katrina and Riri Davis Williams.
    • Her brother Aamir also appears as a main character, voiced by Eric Bauza. In the show, he is also an Inhuman and is Kamala's older half-brother, depicted as a tribesman and shaman who can communicate with wild life, mimic the abilities of animals (most notably tigers) and summon astral projections of tigers. He is a expanded member of the Avengers, code-named Phantom Tiger, and is Kate Bishop's lover.

  • Ms. Marvel also appears as a playable character and supporting protagonist in Marvel/DC Heroes Unite!, voiced again by Kathreen Khavari. She along with the other Marvel heroes team up with the DC Universe superheroes to stop Thanoseid from destroying their both dimensions. She is also shown to be best friends with Stargirl and the Rookie hero.
  • Ms. Marvel is a playable character in Marvel's The Avenging Spider-Man, voiced again by Kathreen Khavari. She plays a role in the story in which she is a friend to Miles Morales and (like him) one of Spider-Man's most dedicated fans. Also, as in the comics, she writes fan-fiction about her heroes (including Captain Marvel) in internet. And her stories consequently ruin J. Jonah Jameson's career as a conspiracy theorist when she indirectly causes a mob of citizens to protest against Jameson's attempts to discredit Spider-Man. She and her friends Gwen Stacy and Anya Corazon become targets of his revenge until they are saved in public by Spider-Man, leading Jameson to be removed from his podcast and arrested and the Webslinger to be praised as a greater hero and to be elected as a member of the Avengers. Later on, she becomes one of the many Inhuman descendants who are affected by the Terrigen Mist and she manifests her Size/Shapeshifting powers. Taking on her idol Captain Marvel's old alias of Ms. Marvel, Kamala begins her own crime-fighting campaign with Mary Jane Watson (as Firestar) becoming her mentor. She is also among the superheroes who help Spider-Man stop Thanos' invasion of Earth and Attilan.

  • Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel also appears in Metagirls as a supporting character. She and her fellow Champions visit an remote island where they spend a bit of their summer holidays. While in the beach, Kamala and her friends soon have an unexpected encounter with the Metagirls, who own the island as their safe heaven. The girls soon become friends with Kamala and the Champions noneless.
