Monsters Vs. Aliens is an upcoming live-action film based on the 2009 film of the same name. Similar to How to Train Your Dragon, the film is a shot-for-shot remake of the original, directed by Joss Whedon. The film will be released on June 12, 2026.

Premise[]

Susan Murphy's life is forever changed when she is hit by a meteor on her wedding day and grows to be 49 feet and 11 inches tall. Imprisoned by the government alongside other monsters captured over the last fifty years, she is offered the chance for freedom when a giant alien robot lands on Earth, which turns out to be the precursor to a full-scale alien invasion. Along the way, Susan will discover how to embrace her best self - whether it be human or monster.

Tara Strong as Gallaxhar's computer

Frank Grillo as General W.R. Monger, the monster prison warden and later the monster team's leader

Mason Thames as Cuthbert

Difference from the Original Film[]

  • Susan is younger in the remake than she was in the animated film.
  • Susan and B.O.B. are seen directly interacting with each other more and they are best friends, with several scenes featuring only them, whereas in the original, they only interact briefly three times.
  • That are several scenes in which Susan's parents voice their concern over her decision to marry Derek, whose obsession with his career would put a strain on their relationship and hinder Susan's happiness. In the original movie, this never happens.
  • Gallaxhar's origin is revealed in full and is much simpler than the one given in the original film, which is not completely revealed to viewers.
  • A running gag is that Link is constantly trying to show off to impress Susan, whereas he only does so when he first meets her in the original film.
  • Susan gets frustrated when Dr. Cockroach's latest attempt to shrink her fails and only calms down when B.O.B. talks to her, whereas in the original film she doesn't get upset and simply tells Dr. Cockroach that they can try again tomorrow.
  • Modesto is accurately portrayed as the county seat town it is in real life, with many real-life locations seen, whereas in the original film it was portrayed as small town with not many residents.

Trivia[]

  • Seth Rogen reprises his role as B.O.B. from the original animated film.
    • This makes him the second actor to reprise his role for a live-action remake of a DreamWorks animated film after Gerard Butler, who reprised his role as Stoick the Vast in the 2025 remake of How to Train Your Dragon.
  • Reese Witherspoon, who portrays Ginormica's mother in the remake, previously voice Ginormica herself in the original animated film.
  • In the scene where the monsters fly from the exploding mothership on Butterflyosaurus, several notes from "Test Drive" from How to Train Your Dragon can be heard.
    • Additionally, Nico Parker and Mason Thames, who portray Astrid and Hiccup respectively in the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, appear in the film as Katie and Cuthbert.
