Minecraft is an American animated television series created by Harvey Wilson and produced by Dingo Productions for the children's programming network Cartoon Network. Based on the 2011 video game Minecraft, it follows the exploits of teenaged protagonists Amelia (Bethany Henderson), Kyle (Alexander Campbell) and Tia (Madeleine Doyle) as they explore the world.

Following the critical and commercial success of Minecraft, the series was first announced in March 2016. The production team focused primarily on creating an organized storyline, divided into story arcs. Animation was inspired by manga, principally anime elements, with the goal of creating an expressive art style, to appeal to both younger and older audiences.

Since its premiere, Minecraft has received a generally positive reception from critics, who praised the animation, writing and music, while criticism was aimed at the pacing and darker tone. Some publications considered the series as among the best video game adaptations.

Premise[]

Minecraft follows the adventures of teenaged protagonists Amelia (voiced by Bethany Henderson) and Kyle (voiced by Alexander Campbell), who are later joined by Tia (voiced by Madeleine Doyle), a former member of antagonist Herobrine, who threatens to erase the existence of the universe. Amelia, Kyle, and Tia travel and meet various people, who give them "rewards," which help them get closer to their goal of defeating Herobrine and his army, while facing challenges, including survival, hostile monsters, and near-death experiences.

Development[]

Wilson envisioned a potential Minecraft-related television series in early 2013, following previous offers from Hollywood producers the previous year. He saw the game's creative freedom as a primary reason, believing that "any story could be told". Wilson then hired screenwriter Jack Cooper to work with him on a show bible before contacting game creator Markus Persson; Gracie Henderson, a story writer on the series, described the call as "optimistic". Inspiration came from the game's mechanics, monsters, and, in particular, the worldbuilding, which Wilson saw as a "important factor" in the series' development and plotlines. Early on, the team wanted the series to explore the "artistic and pleasing" point of view of the video game while also introducing a darker tone, including the idea of each creature having a somewhat purpose in the story.
