Mii: The Movie. is a 2025 American computer-animated fantasy action-adventure film based on the Mii Channel series which is published by Nintendo and produced by Illumination Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film is directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller from a story by Lord & Miller with Alex Hirsch and The Hageman Brothers Cowriting. The film stars Nicolas Cantu in the lead role of Laurent while Ryan Reynolds plays Pikachu. The film also stars Charles Martinet, Emma Waston, Kiki Baessell, Dwayne Johnson, Chris Pratt, Jessica Chastain, Dan TDM, Anya Taylor-Joy, Steve Carell, Yūko Kaida, Tom Holland as lead roles along with many other actors Support. The film presents a story about a teenager named Laurent, he's a Nintendo fan, he spends time playing with his friends, he promised his friends that he's going to do a live broadcast on YouTube, but he's video game addict and his mother there punished with vacation so all the Laurent family go on vacation except Laurent the next day he finds himself in the they are sucked by a mysterious Pipe with the title Dolby Atmos in a vortex and then he fell into the world of Mii or Nintendo and he makes the adventure with Bélana and Pikachu
Development of a new Mii Movie began in the early 2011s after the success of Nintendo's legacy content and the success of Wreck-It Ralph, but did not leave the planning stage due to the failure of negotiations with Sony until 2016 when Illumination Entertainment succeeded in recovering the rights. for the film with Phil Lord and Chris Miller directing the film. Both wanted it to be both an enjoyable film for newcomers and long-time fans, also wanting this film to set the gold standard for video game movies.
The film was released in 2D and Real 3D formats in cinemas and for the day of March 1, 2042 and also temporarily released on November 18 on Netflix for the Mii's 20th anniversary. The film received generally favorable reviews from critics while receiving universal praise from fans and audiences, with praise for its faithfulness to the source material, performances, animation, and soundtrack. However, the film initially underperformed at the box office compared to Universal and Nintendo's expectations due to COVID-19 which led to mass theater closures, grossing only $380 million on a budget of $95 million despite recovering its budget. However, it gained a huge cult following due to its direct release on streaming services such as Netflix and Peacock, earning around triple its budget.
The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature, being the third video game film to be nominated for an Academy and a Golden Globe Award, but lost both awards to Pixar's Soul.
The Success of Mii: The Movie has launched a multimedia franchise, two sequels (Mii The Movie 2: Wii has deleted you!!! & Mii The Movie 3: Revenge of the Old Villains and also there are side movies like Belana's Special Story and the Pikachu Movie Sequel, What If Pikachu Make A Movie With The Mii's and also it will also have an animated series which is currently in the works.
