Marvel vs. Capcom Legacy Collection is a video game collection developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Capcom that includes all Marvel-licensed games they developed during the 1990's, originally released on arcade/console platforms. This collection is released worldwide on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Microsoft Windows (via Steam & GOG.com) and Nintendo Switch in December 2021.

It is considered by fans as an enhanced version of Marvel vs. Capcom: Origins, which was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, before it was removed from online stores in 2014.

Extra Features[]

  • Online multiplayer matches with a rollback netcode, player lobbies, ranked matchmaking, spectating, replay saving and a tournament mode akin to Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection.
  • "Training Mode" which allows the player to practice various playable characters and their moves/techniques for every game included.
  • Secret characters such as Juggernaut/Magneto and Doctor Doom/Thanos (plus Akuma & Anita), who were only playable in the console versions of X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes respectively, can now be played in the arcade versions.
  • Multiple save states which can be used to save and resume a game at any time.
  • The ability to switch between the Japanese and international editions.
  • A challenge system which awards points used to unlock concept art, secret characters (even though they can also be unlocked by using codes) and other content.
  • A museum which allows a player to view unlocked concept art, documents, facts, etc.
  • A music player which plays various tracks throughout the series and as well as many Capcom series represented in the collection.
  • A video player where you can watch many 1990s Marvel and Capcom animated adaptations.
  • Biographies that provide background information, stories, sprite art and animations for every playable fighter and bosses.
  • Multiple filters and viewing angles like in Origins.
  • The Nintendo Switch version would feature Amiibo Support of Ryu, Ken and Classic Mega Man figures to unlock other newer exclusive content based on Mega Man and Street Fighter, a first for the series.

Development[]

A compilation was revealed in a digital event in September alongside updated ports of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Infinite on Nintendo Switch (as they were already released on PlayStation 4/PlayStation 5, Xbox One/Series X via backwards compatibility and Microsoft Windows via Steam) and an untitled succeeding game to the latter with a teaser showing Captain Jake and Rock Light/Classic Mega Man shaking their hands like Scott Summers/Cyclops and Ryu did to each other in the title screen of X-Men vs. Street Fighter (albeit for this time, with a Weirdmageddon tormented Gravity Falls, Oregon on the Background) and an another one with the words "The Ultimate Fight You Truly had been waiting for to save the Omniverse from the Weirdest War ever of All Wars." and the game is revealed to get a release on next-generation consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam/GOG.com) in addition to Arcades for the first time in years since MvC2.

Trivia[]

  • Digital Eclipse has also previously worked on a home console port of Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes during their time as Backbone Entertainment, which was released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 via Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Store in July 29 and August 13, 2009, before it was delisted from digital stores in December 26 and 17 in 2013, respectively.
