Marvel Superhero Adventures: Intergalactic Grand Prix (or simply Superhero Adventures: Intergalactic Grand Prix) is a kart racing video game of the superhero genre developed by Sumo Digital and published by Sega, Marvel Entertainment and Disney Interactive for PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Story

  • The animation of the game's scenario and characters are equivalent to the ones of Disney INFINITY, while story cutscenes use the 2D animation of the animated series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Premise

Having retired from hosting gladiatorial battles in his kingdom out of boredom, the Grandmaster is now hosting the Intergalactic Grand Prix, an auto racing competition endorsed by the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Nova Corps where the winner is to be declared the Galaxy's greatest traveler. Earth's superheroes and supervillains eventually participate the tournament, which also becomes a battle for the fate of the Universe when the grand prize is revealed to have a powerful link with the Infinity Stones, which some of the most powerful and dastardly villains participating the Grand Prix (including evil tyrants Doctor Doom and Thanos) are after. The heroes must also work to reassemble fragments of the Silver Surfer's shattered cosmic board which are scattered around the tournament, and uncover and expose a diabolical conspiracy orchestrated by one of the villains who is not directly participating the Grand Prix.

In space, the Fantastic Four (Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Susan Storm / Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm / Human Torch, and Ben Grimm / the Thing) redeem the Silver Surfer, who helps them defeat his former master Galactus, and imprison him in the Negative Zone. Watching the event, the Grandmaster, ruler of Sakaar who had recently retired from hosting gladiatorial battles out of boredom, collects a fragment of Galactus's energy-harvesting devices, and uses it to create a trophy, which he chooses as the grand prize for the Intergalactic Grand Prix, a superhuman auto racing competition which is being endorsed by S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Nova Corps, and where the winner is to be declared the Galaxy's "Ultimate Traveler".

Two months later, the Fantastic Four and other superheroes (including Peter Parker / Spider-Man and his gang (consisting of his best friend Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales / Kid Arachnid, Gwen Stacy / Ghost-Spider and Felicia Hardy / Black Cat), the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy), were informed about the Grand Prix, and signed up for the competition, with their acquaintances (including Peter's girlfriend Mary Jane Watson, who is the racing flag girl, and her band mates the Mary Janes, as well as Happy Hogan, who is their driver) being employed to represent the heroes. Supervillains (including tyrants like Thanos, Doctor Doom and Kang the Conqueror) are also participating after being convinced by the Grandmaster's brother Taneleer Tivan the Collector that the grand prize can harness the power of the Infinity Stones, prompting the heroes to work hard on the race, and ensure the Stones will be safe. During which, after discovering mysterious silver stone fragments scattered in New York and collecting them before the villains do, Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel discover the Silver Surfer having been separated from his surfboard (which was blasted into pieces during his latest battle against Galactus) and rendered powerless, and agree to help him recover.

As the heroes endure a series of racing matches, challenges and battles during the Grand Prix, they also recover the fragments of the Silver Surfer's surfboard, which supervillains are attempting to use for their advantage in the Grand Prix. They also work to collect the Infinity Stones, which are scattered across numerous areas in the contest. Over the course, the heroes also begin to suspect of a diabolical conspiracy concerning other unregistered villains who also seek the surfboard's fragments and the Infinity Stones for their personal purposes, with Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel deducing that the Collector is the major mastermind. After the heroes defeat the supervillains in a final match taking place in Thanos's devastated home world of Titan and retrieve nearly all fragments and five Stones, the Collector reveals to be in possession of the Power Stone and the last fragment of the Silver Surfer's board, and is using them as a battery for his super-powered vehicle, also revealing he seeks the Grand Prix's grand prize (with which he plans to obtain and harness the Infinity Stones, and become the galaxy's mightiest being) in the Negative Zone. He also abducts the Grandmaster to lead him to the prize, and betrays the villains by shrinking them into a glass globe.

Knowing that the board fragment and the Power Stone combined will revitalize Galactus, and free him from his imprisonment, Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel pursue the Collector in a race across the Negative Zone (from where they later escape before Galactus is awakened), and defeat him in a battle at the Heart of the Infinity, recovering the board fragment and the Power Stone, and saving the Grandmaster. As the Collector is shrunken into his glass globe, where the betrayed villains proceed to vengefully attack him, the heroes are declared winners of the Intergalactic Grand Prix. The revitalized Silver Surfer departs into space with his rebuilt board in good terms with the heroes. Spider-Man uses the grand prize to create an Adamantium/Vibranium inhibitor statue which is used to contain and seal the Infinity Stones' power, and send them back to the Heart of Infinity where they belong. Having enjoyed their adventure during the Grand Prix, the heroes wage a friendly race in New York to celebrate their victory.

In two mid-credit scenes:

  • A group of children dressed as the superheroes are waging a junior go-kart race in AvengersLand, with Aunt May, Princess Shuri and Scarlet Witch watching.
  • Arcade, one of the villains defeated by Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel during the Grand Prix, is in his cell having traumatic nightmares of a tiger-headed monster truck chasing him, as a result of him being bitten by Mary Jane's pet tiger Diego.

In a post-credit scene, Gwen Poole / Gwenpool is in another dimension, playing racing video games with some of her multiversial guests (consisting of Spider-Ham, Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios, Miles "Tails" Prower, Tinker Bell, R2-D2, Slapstick and a few Chao), as they wonder if the Intergalactic Grand Prix will have a next season[1].

Gameplay

Similar to other kart racing games like the Mario Kart franchise and Crash Nitro Kart, players compete in customized tracks in races with eight or twelve characters and vehicles. During the races, players can pick up Power-ups to gain advantage, or perform special techniques to gain a speed boost. Players have an inventory which carries three Power-ups. Each character has a personalized projectile item (such as Spider-Man shooting webs, or Thor throwing his hammer Mjolnir) which can be obtained from power-up items, and a special ability (called a "Super Boost", based on the "All-Star Moves" from Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed) unique to them which they may use to their advantage (such as Spider-Man using web-gliders on his karts and Captain America ramming his opponents with his shield), which they can obtain if their power matter in the right corner of the screen is full. The gate matter is filled up by attacking and defeating opponents with the power-ups, performing successful air tricks, and/or collecting Stark Coins which are scattered around the tracks. In Battle Arena, the Super Boost is replaced for "Super Battle Mode", on which the character's kart is transformed into a weaponized hovering mech suit or giant avatar form (such as Iron Man transforming his karts into the Hulkbuster Armor) for a short period of time.

Also, similar to the Sonic Riders trilogy, skills are determined by the vehicles chosen by characters: motorcycles are the only vehicles capable of jumping, and can grind on rails. Hovering vehicles can fly through boost rings for higher and/or inaccessible areas and shortcuts. And bigger, heavier vehicles like Hulk's monster truck can crush and destroy certain obstacles when close.

The Story Mode features an open world third-person platform adventure style (similar to Crash Tag Team Racing), where in which player (taking control of superheroes like Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, and Hulk) explores the environment to interact with non-playable characters, collect items, and complete tasks to participate in racing events. Stark Coins can also be found in the environment, and used to unlock content from Princess Shuri's workshop. Characters can also be switched anywhere at any time in the hub (similar to Lego Marvel Super-Heroes and Lego Marvel Super-Heroes 2), and are unlocked in the first missions they are playable.

Game Modes

  • Test Drive: Taking place in a Horizon Labs facility, this level serves as the Training Tutorial level for the game. It is also played in Story Mode.
  • Racing Tracks: the Game Modes in Racing Tracks consist of:
    • Normal Race: Players can select any track of their choosing to play. The maximum number of racers on a track at any one time is between eight, ten or twelve. It can also be played in Local and Online Multiplayer Mode. There are also two Normal Racing Modes: on Individual (where players race against each other individually) or on Team (where players compete while split between two, three, four, five or six teams, similarly to Team Sonic Racing. The numbers of team members also vary between two and six.)
    • Time Trial: The Time Trials vary depending on which game mode is chosen: in Normal Race trials, player vies for the fastest lap. The best time is then saved as a ghost, which the player can race against in later trials. In Story Mode, player must complete a lap within a time limit.
    • Blipped Out: In each 15 seconds, the racer in the last position will be eliminated from the race. Last racer who remains wins.
    • Follow the Leader: Player must follow a flying NPC in the track and collect the power-ups and items he/she drops in the track. Player will fail if he/she loses the leader's trail and/or stays behind for too long.
    • Hot Pursuit: Player must pursue and destroy an elusive NPC and enemy within a time limit. Player will fail if he/she loses the enemy's trail and/or runs out of time.
    • Treasure Hunter: Player must collect a number of items in the track and complete one lap within a time limit. While the mission starts with a 1-minute time limit, a collected item will award player with 10 extra seconds.
    • Demolition Worker: Player must ram and destroy a number of target items in the track and complete one lap within a time limit. While the mission starts with a 1-minute time limit, player earns 10 extra seconds with each successful hit.
  • Battle Arenas: Up to four or twelve racers fight customized battles, launching weapons during combat in one of the special battle arenas. Like the Normal Races, the Battle Arenas can be played in Individual mode or Team mode, and can also be played in Local and/or Online Multiplayer Mode. The battle modes consist of:
    • Knockout Battle: Racers battle each other to survive until the last one stands. Each racer can respawn after being defeated in battle, but will be eliminated from the battle when he/she loses all three or five lives.
    • Spoils of War: Racers battle to collect as many Stark Coins as they can within a time limit. One player/team will win by collecting most coins.
    • Minion Mayhem: Racers battle to destroy as many enemies as they can within a time limit. One player/team will win by destroying most enemies, which can be destroyed with Power-ups, or by ramming them.
    • Survival of the Fittest: Racers battle each other and score within the time limit. Player with the highest score wins.
  • Grand Prix: Players compete in a racing cup with a number of tracks for the Bronze, Silver, and Golden trophy. It can also be played in Local Multiplayer Mode. There are two different types of racing cups:
    • Normal Cup: Players compete in one of the six racing cups with each consisting of five tracks.
    • Intergalactic Cup: Unlocked after clearing Story Mode. Players compete in all racing cups and tracks.
  • Story Mode: Player participates the game's main storyline, and completes missions and races to progress and unlock new tracks, characters and vehicles in six chapters. In each chapter, player explores a hub area on foot, while participating races and battle arenas associated with a Grand Prix Cup. Story Mode also supports two players for cooperative activities. There are also two game modes/missions which are exclusive to Story Mode:
    • Rival Race: Taking place in racing track events, the Rival Races will pit player against an individual playable character who must be defeated in a race to succeed.
    • Boss Battle: The Boss Battles take place in both racing tracks and battle arenas, and will pit player against a non-playable villain whom player must eliminate. Also on this mode, racers can only respawn five times when defeated by the bosses, and will fail the mission if they are defeated a sixth time.
  • Multiplayer Mode: It has two modes: Local, which can be played with 2, 3 or 4 players in the same console with a split screen, and does not require internet access, and Online, which can be played with 12 players connected to internet in individual consoles.

Collectibles and Power-ups

  • Stark Coins: Stark Coins are scattered across the game's tracks, and can be used to fill up the Super Boost matter, with each Coin filling up 10%. Outside the races, the Coins can also be collected in the Story Mode's hub area, and used to unlock special content in Shuri's workshop.
  • Power-ups: The power-ups are shaped as blue balloons with S.H.I.E.L.D. logos in them. The power-up obtained will be randomly selected:
    • Stark Beetle Drones: two drones which shoot at nearby racers at player's will. The shoots are controlled manually, with an ammo of 50 (25 for each drone).

      • Target Lock ×3: Allows the player to execute the attack three times.
    • EMP Wall: One of the trap items. It allows player to summon an EMP wall to immobilize rivals from behind, and block upcoming attacks.

    • Fake Detour Sign: One of the trap items. It causes the rivals from behind (if they are hit) to automatically and unintentionally steer left or right off the track.
    • Stark Sentry Drone: Similar to the Blue Shell from the Mario Kart games, the Stark Sentry Drone is used to chase after and blast the lead racer. It is more commonly obtained by racers in the lower places (from 6th to 12th). In the Battle Arenas, the drone automatically aims and fires at the racers approaching the one who obtains it.
    • Shield Emblem: Allows the racer to protect himself/herself from opponents' attacks with a protective force field.
  • Bronze Star: Fills up 25% of the Super Boost matter.
  • Silver Star: Fills up 50% of the Super Boost matter.
  • Golden Star: Fills up 100% of the Super Boost matter.
  • Dash Arrows: Appearing in random areas of the track, and in leaping ramps, the Dash Arrows give the racers' karts a boost, similar to the Dash Panels in the Sonic the Hedgehog games.

Disney Interactive logo variations

It features Donald Duck and Goofy on a kart for two, as they wage a race with two individual teams (Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope Von Schweetz and an individual video game duo) in which Stan Lee is the flag man, Gwenpool, Slapstick, Korg, and Uatu the Watcher are the cheering crowd, and the Disney Interactive title is presented as the red lights and green light to start the race. As the other two duos ride forward, Donald's and Goofy's kart malfunctions for a moment before it boosts on uncontrollably. The video game duo featured in the logo will vary depending on the console version of the game:

  • The Nintendo Switch version will have Mario and Luigi.
  • The Xbox One/Xbox Series X/S versions will have Banjo and Kazooie.
  • The PlayStation 4/PlayStation 5 versions will have Ratchet and Clank.

Easter Eggs and References

There are several references and Easter eggs from the Marvel Universe (including the Marvel Cinematic Universe films), as well as from Disney's products and Sega's games, including cameo appearances of characters.

  • Stan Lee makes some small appearances in the game's background, with archive audio dialogues from his previous cameo appearances.
  • The presentation of the Disney Interactive logo for the game is similar to the Illumination logo presentation for The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023).
  • Whenever he is defeated in a race before his kart respawns after being destroyed, Deadpool occasionally mimics Goofy's holler.
  • Posters of Sonic the Hedgehog series games (including racing titles like Sonic Riders) can be seen in the New York Cup tracks.
  • In the Story Mode cutscene where Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Rocket and Groot decide to consult Doctor Strange for information about the Silver Surfer's board fragments, Ms. Marvel stares at a sorcerer-themed poster in the streets. The sorcerer in the picture resembles Yen Sid from Disney's Fantasia segment "The Sorcerer's Apprentice".
  • When after an attempt to decipher the Silver Surfer's fragments through the astral plane leads to him, Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Rocket and Groot being confronted by their silver doppelgangers, Doctor Strange laments that "they will not be easy to bargain with", a reference to his confrontation with Dormammu in the 2016 film, where Strange notably quotes: "Dormammu, I've come to bargain.", which has also become an internet meme.
  • In the end of the Mary Janes' performance in the Hall of Champions, Spider-Man and Mary Jane share a kiss with the former hanging upside down. A reference to their popular kiss scene from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002).
  • When acknowledging Mary Jane's pet tiger Diego, Squirrel Girl mentions herself aware of 'another big cat with that name', referencing to one of the main protagonists in the Ice Age film series (who is a sabretooth tiger).
  • In the cutscene before the Team Race in Wakanda during Chapter 2, when Man-Ape punches one of Betty Brant's camera drones, the drone screams with a sound similar to R2-D2.
  • In the cutscene after the race in Latveria, Diego slams Klaw in the ground multiple times, similar to how Hulk did to Loki in The Avengers (2012), and Thor in Thor: Ragnarok (2017).
  • TBD

Other references

  • In a cutscene where he mocks the Leader, Deadpool quotes: "Ooooh, I'm shaking in my custom baby seal leather boots!", a line used by the titular protagonist of DreamWorks' Megamind (2010) to mock Metro-Man.
  • After being swallowed by Goose and shrunken into his glass globe, the Collector is shown laying on the ground in a similar pose as Squidward Tentacles in the SpongeBob SquarePants episodes "Mutiny at the Krusty Krab", "Out of the Picture" and "Feral Friends".
  • In a mid-credit scene featuring Arcade (who is heavily traumatized by the attack of Mary Jane's pet tiger Diego on him) is wearing two boxes of tissues on his feet as shoes and complaining that he cannot risk going outside (even for dinner) because the "monster might see him". This scene is similar to Plankton in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "One Coarse Meal", on which Plankton reacts the same way over his paranoid fear of whales (which was being exploited by Mr. Krabs).
  • TBD
