Enjoying their first week of studies at Baxter Institute[1], Nathan Quill is with his girlfriend Zoe Gillan working on their animatronic robots under Bruce Banner's supervision while recalling the day he was once joy-walking on streets until he ended up witnessing an alien gemstone crash-landing on Earth and, right after Nathan touched it, merged with him, granting him a symbiotic link with a special star-shaped emblem of alien technology which was stored in a old S.H.I.E.L.D. basement nearby. The emblem granted him amazing powers anytime it was connected to him and, inspired by Peter Parker's actions as Spider-Man, became the new superhero Star-Lord. Right after finishing their projects, Nathan and Zoe witness the Jackal, an animalistic, green-furred criminal, terrorizing citizens and stealing technologic equipment from Roxxon. Nathan and Zoe (who happens to be the shape-shifting alien amazon Gamora) suit up and leap for action.

Star-Lord and Gamora confront Jackal in Roxxon and, after a fair fight, defeat him and force him to retreat, but not before Gamora finds a damaged badge with small inscriptions of Midtown High School in the Jackal's clothing, as well as a key for a secret Hydra laboratory hidden in the school. Deducing that one of the teachers is the Jackal and acknowledging him as a agent of Hydra, they opt in infiltrating Midtown High to find evidences. With help from Sally Avril, who keeps principal Raymond Warren and others (including Nathan's estranged brother Hector "Hercules" Quill) occupied with her long speech, Star-Lord and Gamora successfully sneak through the school and enter the Hydra laboratory through what was once Otto Octavius' office. As they find and gather enough evidences of who the Jackal is, Star-Lord and Gamora encounter an alien relic of the Kree Empire and an A.I. card containing the consciousness of Sebastian Allan, a deceased army sergeant and top engineer who was killed during a battle with Hydra in World War II. It is also revealed that Arnim Zola and Red Skull had also transferred sergeant Allan's mind and consciousness into a super-computer for his future experiments after disintegrating his body. Star-Lord and Gamora retrieve the relic and the flash-drive containing Allan's consciousness, but they are soon alerted that Ronan the Accuser is coming for the relic, and will destroy anything in his path if necessary. Just as they leave, they are ambushed by Ronan's squadron of Sakaarian soldiers.

Star-Lord and Gamora fight them off while drawing them away from the school. With eventual help from Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic, Susan Storm / Invisible Woman and Dr. Banner (as Hulk), they defeat the Sakaarians, who eventually pursue the incoming Jackal, who had stolen the Kree relics in first place. Regrouping in Baxter Institute, Nathan and Zoe reactivate Sergeant Allan's consciousness in one of the research computers while Richards, Susan and Banner discuss about what to do with the Kree relics. Concluding that Allan needs a new body to avoid being absorbed by Zola and Red Skull again, they decide to use Mech-89P13, a android body resembling a anthropomorphic raccoon and composed of Kree technology which Nathan and Zoe were secretly working on and upgrade it with Neuro-Cortex. Allan is successfully relocated in the robot, which also gives him new amazing attributes such as changing to the form of a small, but unstoppable rocket, by which Allan reinvents himself as "Rocket Raccoon". Soon after, the school is attacked by Jackal, who seeks to retrieve the relics for Red Skull, and Ronan, who intends to do the same for the Kree Empire.

Star-Lord, Gamora, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman and Hulk battle the two villains while Rocket carries the relics away. Learning of his new robotic body's capabilities and functions, Rocket manages to destroy the relics to prevent any further possessions and rejoins the fight. Jackal attacks Rocket over the relics, but Rocket defeats him, scarring his face and forcing him to retreat. Star-Lord and Gamora are likewise able to defeat Ronan, who is pushed into a teleportation portal in Richards' lab and send him to a lifeless, uninhabited planet, where he awaits for his minions to retrieve him and vows revenge. Next day, Sally overhears news of Star-Lord, Gamora and their teachers defeating Jackal and Ronan with help from their new companion Rocket while finding Principal Warren having a large scar in his face (just like the one the Jackal got), a proof that Warren is the Jackal. Meanwhile, Nathan and Zoe present their animatronic robots to Richards, Susan, Banner and the students, and earn praise for their work, while Rocket flies around New York, beginning his new superhero career.
