Papa Louie is an American animated sitcom created by Matt Neff and Tony Solary for Cartoon Time! that aired from November 30, 2007, to May 18, 2018. The series follows the daily life of Papa Louie (voiced by Hank Azaria), a lovable but greedy Italian American chef who owns an entire restaurant empire with his nephew Roy (David Koechner), niece Joy (Lori Alan), and other co-workers Marty (Seth Rogen), Matt (Matt Neff), Rita (Wanda Sykes), Prudence (Kaley Cuoco), Cooper (Ryan Reynolds), Penny (Grey DeLisle), Alberto (Phil LaMarr), Tony (Tony Solary), Mandi (Kristen Wiig), Amy (Kristen Bell), Taylor (Chris Rock), and Anthony (Paul Giamatti, who spend their days working in a certain restaurant, which unexpectedly leads to surreal, extreme, and supernatural misconduct.
Neff and Solary initially worked as directors, writers, and executive producers for the Nickelodeon animated series Rugrats from seasons 4-9, following the departure of Paul Germain. They began pitching the series to Nickelodeon following their successful run on the series but it was ultimately rejected due to the network's reliance on SpongeBob SquarePants. Neff and Solary then pitched the series to Nickelodeon's main competitor Cartoon Time! to which they were offered to produce a short for the network's showcase project Young Cartoonists. Neff and Solary developed the Papa Louie pilot for the project, utilizing characters from their California Institute of the Arts student films The Italian Chef (1993) and McDonald's at 2 (1994). While Young Cartoonists was ultimately scrapped, Cartoon Time! and 20th Century Fox executives approved the production of Papa Louie, starting with its first season. Its first eight seasons were rating successes, with Nielsen Media Research ranking the series at number one in its time period amongst its primary demographic. At points, it even surpassed Cartoon Time!'s flagship series Big Group. It was Cartoon Time!'s second television series to be entirely produced in widescreen following The Awesome Adventures of Gerald Reynolds, and their first to be shown on television in the format via Cartoon Time!'s high-definition feed which was launched on October 22, 2007, although the first two seasons were cropped into a 4:3 aspect ratio on the standard-definition feed for several years due to the 16:9 aspect ratio not being the standard in television animation prior to 2009.
Papa Louie received positive reviews from critics and has been noted for its appeal towards different age groups, simplistic Flash animation style, meta humor, and frequent references to popular culture. It has attained eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including a win in the Outstanding Animated Program category for the 2013 one-hour seventh season episode "When Burgers Attack!". The series has also been nominated for nine Annie Awards, as well as three BAFTA Children's Awards. The eleventh and final season was announced by Cartoon Time! on November 20, 2015. A theatrical film adaptation based on the series, titled Papa Louie: The Movie, was released on December 23, 2015. After eleven seasons and 200 half-hour episodes, Papa Louie concluded on May 18, 2018, with the 66-minute finale "At the End of the Worlds".
On January 26, 2023, 20th Television Animation announced that the show would be revived with two seasons containing 40 episodes, the first of which premiered on Cartoon Time! and Disney Channel on November 1, 2024, and on Disney+ the following day. The thirteenth season premiered on November 27, 2025 on Cartoon Time! and Disney Channel, and the following day on Disney+. A second theatrical film adaptation based on the series, titled Papa Louie: The Movie - Electric Boogaloo, was released on November 14, 2025. On April 2, 2025, the series was renewed for four additional seasons containing 80 episodes.
