Hilda "Name Subject to change" is a platformer action-adventure video game based on the Hilda TV series and graphic novels, and serving as a continuation of the third season's ending. It was released on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on March 27, 2026. It was developed by Now Production with assistance by ILCA, Inc. and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Gameplay[]

The game is a 3D platformer akin to games such as the 3D Spongebob videogames. Each chapter takes place on an open world zone, everytime you first start a new chapter there'll be event cutscenes related to the plot of the game, and you have to find most of collectionables that are portrayed as Badges, in order to progress through the chapters. After you complete a chapter and revisit it (mostly for the Post Game), the main event cutscenes won't play anymore and you'll get to explore the worlds more freely and find the remaining Sun Medals you haven't found. There are also shops where you can buy health items, upgrades for your abilities, and also some of the extras you can unlock such as the sound test. Badges are very vital for the 100% of this game, as they unlock stuff such as bonus costumes for Hilda and Co, an Extras Menu where you can see clips from the original show, concept art, developer commentaries, the sound test, and also watch the cutscenes from the story, including a short film made for this game, that takes place during the events of one of the chapters.

Characters[]

Each character has its own moveset and abilities, most of these are requiered to get most of the collectionables in the levels.

Hilda[]

The main character of the game, and the one you'll play as when starting the game. She's pretty much the most agile character out of all the 6, being able to run/swim on a pretty good speed, doing long jumps to reach platforms easier, and also has the ability to do a higher jump and reach higher places easy. She's also able to momentarily fly with her 1/4 Fairy power but that's an ability she learns later on in the game. Her default attack move is her sword, which she can use to not only attack enemies but also break certain objects like crates and chairs. Each character can upgrade their own attack movements to make them more stronger and efficient on combat. Her sword can be upgraded to do a three combo attack and beat enemies more easier. Her second attack move is the bow, with this thing she's able to attack enemies at distance, when she upgrades it she's now able to shoot the arrows faster. Her third attack move is the ability to carry heavy objects and throw them to the enemies or some switches, when upgraded she can now throw them on a longer distance.

Frida[]

The second playable character in the game. While she's as fast as Hilda she can't do the long jumps or that higher jump movement, but she's a witch unlike her. She can use her witch magic for lots of stuff, to heal herself, to alter technology, to make people float, and to open portals. Her default attack is the magic whip, with this she can do a whip attack to hurt the enemies near her, she can also do a mid air spin attack with it, when upgraded her whip attack gets stronger as she's able to charge it and with her mid air attack she's able to slowly descend down as she spins, Her second attack is the shooting magic, with this she's able to shoot two projectiles towards the enemies and this also works for some specific switches, when upgraded she can now shoot four projectiles at once. Her third attack is the magic missile, with this she's able to cast a powerful sphere that she can control to make it crash with anything and then explode, it's pretty much inspired of the Cruise Bubble from Battle for Bikini Bottom as you have a limited amount of time to make the sphere collide with an enemy or switch, when upgraded the amount of time for sphere to disappear is increased to 20 seconds and the explosion becomes stronger.

David[]

The third playable character in the game. David (Along Louise) is kind of weaker compared to Hilda and Frida, despite moving pretty fast, it feels considerably slower than Frida and Hilda, and his attacks are also not to strong as Hilda and Frida. Stil, he has his own advantages, such as being able to use a grappling hook to hang and swing on certain objects and ceilings, use the bugs to distract the enemies, and is also able to count fast. His default attack is attacking with a shovel, it kinda works the same as Hilda's sword but it's more weaker in comparation, when upgraded you also get to do a three combo with it. His second attack is a slingshot, this is more useful for stealth attacking rather than using it for actual combats, when upgraded it becomes sightly stronger. His third attack is the ball tossing, with it he can throw a ball directly to the enemies and stun them if he hit them excellently, it also works to hit some switches at the distance, when upgraded David can now toss it harder and even be able to knock down the enemies if lucky.

Johanna[]

The fourth playable character in the game. Johanna (and Anders) are the only adult characters playable in this game, she has more health points than the three main kids. She's as agile as Hilda, and can perform a more advanced version of the Fairy flight move. As an adult she has the use of more stuff than Hilda and company, such as using tools, using fire guns, and driving cars, but unfortunately since she's taller she can't go on most of the small spots. She can also access certain places only adults can enter. Her default attack is the chainsaw, which is able to not only hurt enemies with a double combo attack, but also break other objects like crates, spider webs, and even some walls, when upgraded the chainsaw gets an update on its design and saw which makes it more useful for combats as it now has the ability of attack on a more longer distance. Her second attack is the shotgun, with this weapon she's able to hurt many enemies at the same time if they're too close of the shooting range, it also works to break some walls, when upgraded it recharges more fast and can shoot twice. Her third attack is the charging, she shares this ability with Anders, with this ability, both of them are able to charge against the enemies and ram them up, when upgraded they can charge indefinitely and more stronger.

Anders[]

The fifth playable character in the game. Just like his ex-wife Johanna, he has more health than Hilda and company, and can't fit on most of the small spots in the levels. While he isn't as fast as Hilda and Johanna, he's the strongest out of the five, being able to grab some of the enemies and heavier stuff. Unfortunately he's not a very good swimmer, so if you fall to the water he'll instantly die, fortunately after a certain secondary mission he gets to learn how to swim better and the water no longer kills him. His default attack is melee combat, he's able to punch, kick and head butt the enemies and do various combos, when upgraded his melee combat improves and turns more into karate. His second attack is the stomping, which he can use to stomp the enemies near him, when upgraded it'll do a little shockwave that will stun the enemies allowing you to pick them up. His third attack is the charging which works exactly the same as Johanna.

Others[]

In some parts of the game, other characters such as Twig and Alfur are playable, albeit in brief sections. When playing as Alfur, the level will switch to a 2.5D gameplay, with Twig, the level switches to a autorunner style gameplay, and with the Raven in his thunderbird form, the level will switch to gameplay similar to the NiGHTS series. Louise can also be played, but not as a main character, but rather for some of the "Take a Picture" minigames, where the gameplay turns into something like Pokemon Snap, where you have to take pictures to the environment and the creatures around.

Underwater Control[]

In underwater levels, the characters are able to swim on a similar way as the 3D Mario games, but can also switch to a more smooth movement underwater. The oxygen bar consists of a blue bar that will be slowly lowering as you stay underwater, and to refill it, you have to swim back to the surface, or look for a crack where a bubble comes out to take oxygen from it, just like the Sonic the hedgehog games, when it goes zero, then the characters will drown. One interesting thing about the characters going underwater is that they have their own time length before they drown; Hilda and Johanna can hold their breaths the most underwater for up to ninty seconds, Anders for seventy seconds, while Frida and David can hold it for sixty seconds. Main Story Chapters[]

Chapters serve as acts to the game. Each chapter consist of six levels featuring a big hub world to explore. All the chapter end with a boss fight at the sixth level which is more of a boss level.

Chapter 1: Trolberg[]

Serving as the first chapter of the game, the levels will act as tutorials for the player, instructing simple but important abilities to use later in the game, such as: combat, swimming, and using fairy powers.

Story: Our story begins at the city better known as Trolberg, where our blue haired heroine was sleeping peacefully on her bed. Once she woke up she went to brush her teeth and change her clothes, and after eating breakfast she would leave the house to go on adventures. And thus the title of "Hilda "Name subject to change" appeared above the screen. As she left the apartment, she would find Frida waiting for her, but she seemed a bit too concerned. She explained to Hilda that during the morning, the Vittra clan would break into the city through holes and cause a big havoc, just because they were tired of the security patrol trying to limit or regulate them out of fear the streets above might become unstable. She would also tell her that while she and David were walking through the streets they were ambushed by those Vittra and had to escape from them, she could barely escape them but David would let them follow him to let her reach Hilda's home at time. Upon hearing this, Hilda decided that they had to stop this and quickly, and so they would try going to the Vittra Tunnels and try talking to them and stop this. Frida would teach Hilda various of the control movements of the game such as moving, jumping, and attacking with her sword to break obstacles across their way, and after roaming around through the street near Hilda's home, they would see David running away from some Vittra as they chased him with sticks in hand, David would bump on Hilda and she would go behind her, and so Hilda was prepared to fight them off. After defeating them, David would be thankful with Hilda for saving him, and would give her a bag of jorts for her to eat when she needed it, he would also tell Hilda that the Vittras have been stealing most of the valuable stuff from shops and homes, including his home too, they even kidnapped her mom into thinking she was a mannequin for some reason. Frida was still hopeful that she could talk them out and solve this problem of the tunnels thing, so they decided to go into the downtown of the city where they encountered even more Vittras attacking the city and stealing. After avoiding and fighting some of the Vittras who got on their way, they would reach a little playground area where Trevor and gang were playing around while ignoring the whole Vittra Invasion, when they saw Hilda and company walking over there, they decided to mess around with them for a bit. David thought the place was empty, when suddenly Trevor and gang would ambush them out of nowhere to bully them, but after a little conflict they managed to knock them down, and get another badge from them. Later on they reached the dock where they saw more chaos around the area, even two Vittras were toying with people by beating them up repeatedly, luckily a citizen at the top of one of the houses would crush one of the Vittra to stop them doing that, David knew things were gonna get serious from now on. During their adventure through the harbor they would find out that one of the entrances to the Vittra Tunnels were located at the Sewers, but they had locked most of the entrances to the sewer pipes. Only one was accessible luckily, but it was located the bay of Trolberg, luckily Hilda and friends were good swimmers so they would dive down to enter the sewers and try reaching the Vittra Tunnels, their road through the underwater pipes would lead them to discover the ability to grab air from air bubbles coming from some cracks on the pipes, and after swimming for a while they reached the surface and found a little hole that led to the Vittra Tunnels, and so they jumped right in. Once they fell in the ground they began to walk around the tunnels trying to avoid most of the Vittras around the tunnels while saving most of the trapped folk on there including David's mom who was trapped on a room filled with mannequins and toys, unfortunately they would get discovered and be taken to their leader, the Vittra King. He would ask them why they were trying to sneak inside their tunnels, and Hilda explained him that they had to stop attacking the city, for there were other places for them to do their tunneling, but the Vittra King would refuse to just order all his clan to leave the already perfect tunnel system they made for them and try finding a new home. He implied that they've been here for years now, and it would be terrible for them to just move far away when they're already happy here, and he would order the Vittras to kick them out of their tunnels, but luckily Frida would use her magic to push them away and she would get Hilda's sword back and set themselves free. the Vittra King was furious and jumped to the battle area to show the kids his mighty power. After a tough fight they would defeat the Vittra King, and on a desperate attempt he would ask them for mercy, and so Frida would end up convincing him and the Vittras to stop causing havoc at the city and leave the people alone, and they didn't had any other choice but to listen to them and stop the invasion. Once at the surface, they saw how it was getting late, so they bid goodbye quick and went back to their respective homes. Hilda would return home pretty tired and she would go to her room to rest, and we also get some scenes of Frida and David also returning home while being pretty tired. The most normal chapter of the game, you'll say. Well it's gonna get wild from here.

Areas[]
  • Hilda's Home: In this area of the map you're at Hilda's home, the place where she lives. You can explore most of the rooms such as the living room, bathroom, Hilda's Room, and Johanna's Room. It's a very big area but it's interesting for those who ever wanted to explore Hilda's home.
  • Hilda Street: This area is where you first start the game, it's an open zone street where you can walk/run around and mess with some npcs comically, this place also works to let the player know the basic controls of Hilda as a character. Also this is where the standard enemy type is introduced. There are two badges here, one is gotten after saving David from the Vittras who were chasing him, and the second one is hidden in a spot only Frida can access with her magic.
  • Downtown: The downtown is filled with lots of stuff to do, such as exploring the surroundings, fighting enemies, going into the shop, and even interact with some npcs, some will give a random objective to complete, like getting as many collectibles for most of them or doing a mini game to help them out, sometimes they'll reward you with a Badge or with money for you to buy stuff at the shop. This is where the hammer enemy type it's introduced. There are 3 Badges to get in this area, one is gotten after defeating Trevor and company, the second one is hidden on a place only Hilda can reach by using her higher jump correctly, the third one is gotten after completing an objective from one of the citizens.
  • Library; This area is unlocked after completing Chapter 1, it's basically the library we all know and love from the original show. There's one Badge you can get, and it's gotten by helping out Kaisa in one mini game, but only Frida can play it.

Into the Future[]

The DLC Into the Future was released in 2027, involving Hilda getting transported a century into the future, where humanity seems to have advanced a lot more than in her timeline.

Development[]

The game's story, as well as characters, were written and designed by Luke Pearson himself. The writers of the show also helped in handling the game's story, and the voice cast of the show reprise their roles for this game. Ryan Carlson handled the music for the game. Cutscenes featured in the game were animated by Mercury Filmworks, the studio responsible for the show's animation.

Four months after the game's release, it was announced that a free DLC pack would be adding new content into the game, including the new Co-op mode, new customization skins for Hilda and other characters, and a bonus chapter that is completely separate from the main story.

Release[]

A special edition of the game was released, which included the game itself, a code for a 2-month Netflix free trial, a signed copy of Hilda and the Midnight Giant, and a plush toy of Hilda manufactured by Gund. Included in the Japanese version are all the aforementioned collectibles, in addition to a character guide book, which lists the characters from the novels and the show, as well as from this game.
