Hel is an American action roguelike video game developed by Supergiant Games as a spiritual successor to their Hades duology.

Synopsis[]

Baldr, the God of Strength and Bravery, decides to finally escape from the realm of Niffleheim, having to face through forces of the undead as he knows he needs to beat Hel in order to escape, soon starting to learn of the true reasons that Hel refuses to let him leave while soon learning that his attempts to escape Hel are way more complicated, requiring him to traverse the Nine Realms to find a permanent solution to escape.

Characters[]

Main[]

  • Baldr (voiced by Cyrus Nemanti) - a sometimes careless and brash but truly kindhearted Aesir God who grew tired of his death and chooses to fight his way out of Hel in order to reclaim his place in Asgard, initially fighting through Niffleheim in order to beat Hel. After escaping from Niffleheim for the first time, he learns that the spell keeping him in Hel is way more complicated than he is aware of, forcing him to venture through four of the Nine Realms to find components to save his soul.

Hel's Mansion Residents[]

  • Mimir (voiced by Logan Cunningham) - a talkative yet disciplined and wise god who was beheaded by Odin with his head soon being gifted to Hel as a gift of peace as he resides in Hel's Mansion as one of the few Gods there, truly thinking that Baldr deserves a chance to live again, all the while secretly being the one who communicated with Freya, helping talk to Baldr whenever he feels angry that his escape attempts failed.
  • Hodr (voiced by David Menkin) - the melancholic yet blind older brother of Baldr who was tricked into killing him and was soon killed by Viali as he was chosen to reside in Hel's Mansion specifically to torment Baldr as shockingly, Baldr has no ill will to Hodr and is fully aware that he was deceived into killing him, although Hodr is far harder on himself.

Bosses[]

Niffleheim Route[]

  • Hel (voiced by Jamie Landrum) - the cold and distant Goddess of Niffleheim and the dead who wants to keep Baldr dead, with her being found in Hel's Mansion where she mockingly talks to Baldr about his consistent deaths while trying to escape, seeing his attempts to escape to be pitiful and not worthy of her time. She is also found at the final area of Niffleheim, where she is the final boss of the Niffleheim route. She fights using both her aspect of the Argent Skull Revaal and many magical tricks.
  • Garmr (also voiced by Logan Cunningham) - a giant-sized and predatory yet intelligent and ruthless undead wolf who is Hel's guard dog and major enforcer at Niffleheim, as he is often sent to hunt after Baldr to prevent him from escaping, only to be defeated multiple times, being fought at the Bridge of the Dead and is devoted to preventing Baldr's escape, being the last guardian that Baldr faces before facing Hel.

She is always the first God that Baldr communicates with as her effect is Poison which causes enemies to take small bits of damage continuously for a small bit.

  • Thor (voiced by Neil Newbon) - Baldr's vengeful and fight-loving yet honorable brother and the God of Thunder who wields the storm-manipulating hammer Mjolnir who learns of his brother's battles with Hel and decides to give Baldr his own boons as well, with the boons having the Electric effect which causes those affected it to take a small amount of damage after a certain time.
  • Odin (also voiced by Logan Cunningham) - the mysterious and powerful yet knowledge hungry King of Asgard and of the Gods who initially shares no interest in Baldr's plight but after his first fight with Hel, decides to give Baldr his own boons as well, with his boons having the Bifrost effect, allowing Baldr to double the damage of his next attack on someone covered in Bifrost.

Friendly Encounters[]

  • Ratatoskr (voiced by Darren Korb) - a charismatic and chipper traveling squirrel who tends the roots of Yggdrasil as he shows mercy on Baldr's attempts to escape from Niffleheim as he runs a shop during safe areas in both routes, selling Baldr valuable items in exchange for coin, truly believing in Baldr's goals to escape.

Resources[]

Run Resources[]

These are resources that are rewards for completing rooms and encounters, either being used for enhancing Baldr during the run.

  • TBD
  • Forge of Eitri - small forges that Baldr can collect that can unlock a special upgrade for whichever weapon that he is using on that run.

Base Resources[]

These are resources that are also rewards for completing rooms and encounters but instead of focusing on enhancing him during the run, they are used for enhancing him at Hel's Manor.

  • TBD

Boss Resources[]

These are resources that are collected after defeating boss fights, with them being used to mainly unlock either Weapon Aspects or to use Vanir Magick to gain ways to help Baldr advance.

  • TBD

Natural Resources[]

These are resources common throughout the locations which you need to use tools to collect. The natural resources are split into four categories: Ores, Seeds (which grow into plants), plants and fish.

  • TBD

Prophecies in the List of Minor Prophecies[]

Similar to the Hades games, there is a List of Minor Prophecies ran by the Norns which are basically missions to gain more resources. They include:

  • Defying Hel - Baldr will one day defy his own fate and defeat Hel. Reward: TBD.

Vanir Spells[]

In order to progress throughout the game, Baldr would need to use forgotten Vanir Magick to gain help, with the mechanic functioning similarly to Hades 2's Cauldron.

  • Gateway to the Nine Realms - a spell which is used to open the gateway into the Nine Realms themselves. Needed Items: 1 [Hel's boss resource], 3 [final Niffleheim area ore] and 40 [aesir stone upgrade item].

Keepsakes[]

Similar to Hades 1 and 2, when gifting a giftable character Mead Bottles, they give you a Keepsake which can be used to enhance runs.

  • TBD

Aesir Stone Upgrades[]

Similar to Hades' Mirror of Night or Hades 2's Alter of Ashes, touching the Aesir Stone and spending Blood gives Baldr new permanent perks.

  • TBD

Trivia[]

  • Author's Note: Supergiant Games would likely never do this, but I love both Hades games and I always wanted to do a Hades adjacent idea so this.
