Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold (2023 Film)

Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold is an upcoming 2023 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character the Green Lantern and the Justice League. It is a follow-up to episode 6 of Emerald Knights, and a tie-in to the series. It is the sixth theatrical installment in the DC Multimedia Universe (DCMU). The film was directed by Greg Berlanti, written by WallyGoat7, and features Chris Pine as Hal Jordan, along with John David Washington, David Corenswet, Robert Pattinson, Jaimie Alexander, Lucas Till, Jono Kenyon and Harry Lennix. This film is a first for the superhero genre, as it releases both on the big screen and as a three-parter on Emerald Knights days later. Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold is the first live-action film to feature John Stewart in a lead role, as well as the first live-action cinematic portrayal of Starro the Conqueror. As Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Martian Manhunter return to Earth, they must assemble the world's greatest heroes in order to repel the Starro invasion. The film was developed after the release of The Flash: Rogue War as it was originally planned to air exclusively on Emerald Knights.

Story[]

Act I[]

Open underwater, the Kingdom of Atlantis. The sea floor is shaking, and therefore the underwater Kingdom is in peril, buildings are falling, statues are collapsing. Atlantean Guards are saving the citizens from debris danger, when suddenly a mysterious starfish plops into the ocean, and then more. The guards investigate the strange anomaly, and are attacked and mind-controlled. They kill civilians, but are soon stopped by Mera’s hydrokinesis. She kills the loose starfishes and blasts the guards back, rendering them unconscious. Suddenly, Aquaman arrives at the scene, late. Mera creates an air bubble for the two to talk.

Aquaman

What in God’s name is going on?

Mera

I’m not too sure. First these tremors, then these starfishes attack the guards

Aquaman

And then the guards attacked you?

Mera

Yes! It’s like they weren’t sure of what they were doing

Aquaman

Perhaps it is Triton, or another angry god testing us once again?

Mera

No, I have the feeling that this is a surface world issue.

Aquaman

And you want me to go up and investigate

Mera

Arthur, I know you no longer trust the surface-

Aquaman

I never trusted the surface. My place is here, I’m the king of Atlantis.

Mera

And Atlantis needs to know that their king will protect them.

Aquaman

Then come with me

Mera

Arthur, somebody has to defend the kingdom. I can’t leave Atlantis unprotected with whatever’s going on

Aquaman

Tsh. Flake.

Aquaman leaves the air bubble to swim up to the shore, and Mera looks up at him, hoping he’ll be enough to stop the coming invasion.

Hal, John and MM land in Coast City, Earth. The ground is shaking, and it’s pouring rain.

Hal

What’s going on?

John

A planet just zapped into our solar system instantly, it’s going to have some effects on our orbit

J’onn

Which means if we don’t stop this soon enough, there will be no more world to save

John

All the reason to get on this, what’s the game plan J’onn?

J’onn

We need to find Earths heroes and convince them to band together. John, I know you are familiar with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman

John

Of course

Hal

Who are we talking about here? Batman? I thought he was a myth!

J’onn

Far from it. John, I need you to find Wonder Woman and Batman, Hal have you heard of the Flash

Hal

The fast guy? Seen him on the news once or twice

J’onn

Then it will be your job to find him. I will track down Superman.

John

Alright then, good luck men.

Hal

Wait, I-

The two fly away towards their assignments

Hal

I don’t know where my guy is!!!

3 gangsters are talking in a strip club in Metropolis.

Mobster #1

-yea, and then Vinny goes all apeshit cause he’s scared of that batclown

Mobster #2

Ooo, if I got my hands on that guy

Mobster #3

Ah, what would you do, Larry?

Mobster #2

You wanna know what I’d do if I caught that dickhead?

Batman

Tell me.

The mobsters are terrified, Batman appeared right behind them. One of them throws a punch, and Batman catches it then punches him in the stomach. He then throws the couch at the 2nd mobster, flipping the third over a table.

Superman

You know, Batman, there’s easier ways to drop in and say hi.

Batman

If you don’t want me in your city, then watch your city. How these two bits were able to get into Metropolis past you-

Superman

Listen, I have a job, Batman. A girlfriend. Responsibilities outside of Gotham crime families.

Martian Manhunter

I am afraid I must add one more to the list.

Superman

J’onn?

Martian Manhunter

Superman. It has been some time.

Batman

Friend of yours?

Superman

Batman, meet J’onn J’onnz. The Martian Manhunter. He’s the main reason we were able to get back from Warworld.

Batman

Manhunter?

Martian Manhunter

I mean no threat to those upholding the law. I wish this was a call for conversation, but we have more pressing matters.

Superman

Well, what’s the problem?

Cut to DC, Diana Prince is exiting a coffee shop when all of a sudden the ground starts trembling. She transforms into Wonder Woman, and saves all the civilians from danger. John Stewart drops in to help.

John

Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman

John Stewart, it is nice to see you again old friend.

John

Wish it were under better circumstances

Wonder Woman

I assume this is related to the earthquakes

John

It’s worse than the earthquakes. Way worse.

Wonder Woman

Explain.

Cut to Central City, the Flash has just stopped a bank robbery by a petty criminal. He leaves him at the police station

The Flash

Mark Mardon, extensive criminal record, wanted for home invasion, I wouldn’t let this guy outta my sight, gotta jet.

Flash zooms out of the station, and a green blur catches up to him

Hal

Fastest man alive, huh?

Flash

You’re new.

The Flash suddenly stops, and Hal keeps going until he crashes into the dirt. He floats back over to Barry

Hal

Fastest and funniest man alive. Amazing.

Flash

Sorry about that, not used to- You’re Green Lantern, aren’t you?

Hal

In the flesh.

Flash

Awesome. Wait, that means this is a superhero team up. Never awesome. What’s going on?

Simultaneously, the trio explain to their respective heroes the situation.

Martian Manhunter

John

Hal

Huge space starfish

John

Wants to enslave the Earth

Martian Manhunter

Take over the galaxy

Hal

Calls himself

John, J’onn and Hal

Starro the Conqueror

Hal

He transported an entire planet

Right into the solar system

Hal

We have no idea how he’s gonna do it

John

But we do know what he wants to do

Martian Manhunter

And we must stop him before he’s able to

John

And if we don’t it won’t matter whether or not he conquers the Earth

Hal

Because the entire Earth will be destroyed.

John, J’onn and Hal

And we need your help to stop it.

Superman

Have you contacted anybody else?

Martian Manhunter

Yes, my associates are meeting with the arranged metahumans as we speak.

Batman

This is J’onn, some of you may know me as the Martian Manhunter. I have established a mental link between the seven of us in order to coordinate this plan smoothly. If you would allow me, I would like to make this more-

The seven of them appear in a mental field, it looks like Earth. The street is empty and the sky is blue.

Inside my mind. I have created a landscape to appease to you all, and eliminate any negative feelings.

Superman

Martian Manhunter

For a period of time, yes.

Batman

There will be time for small talk later, right now we need to formulate a plan, physically.

Hal

Yeah, but where at?

Batman

Gotham Harbor. I know a place.

John

Understood. We’ll be on our way.

J’onn

I’ll keep the link open as a means of communication.

J’onn releases the heroes from the mental trance, and they all head on their way to the mental coordinates Batman has in mind.

Most of the league is in Gotham, with Hal and Barry being the last to arrive

Flash

Hal

Yeah, next time I’ll actually try sparky

Flash

Like you weren’t.

The leaguers stare at Barry and Hal

Hal

What, no friendly competition?

Out of nowhere, a high speed Bat-themed boat arrives in the harbor’s waters. Batman hops in.

Batman

Follow me.

Batman speeds off in the boat, as each of the heroes fly and run behind him. The waters open, and a metal entrance to the batcave presents itself.

Hal

My God.. he has a cave?

Batman parks the boat right by the entrance, and hood onto the ramp leading into the cave. He walks inside with the league behind him. As they walk down the steps to the entrance, Batman sits at the bat computer to strategize the plan. Alfred is right beside him.

Alfred

You’ve brought guests. That’s a first

Batman

Everyone, this is Alfred. He helps me strategize my missions.

Superman

It’s nice to finally meet you

Superman extends his hand, and Alfred shakes it.

Alfred

Likewise.

Flash

This place..

He runs around the entire cave, coming back to the same spot a second later

Flash

Wow. Just-

Batman

Listen, we need to head straight for the source.

Wonder Woman

The only problem is we don’t know where that is

Batman

Portugal, reports have been flying in about homes and buildings being destroyed, take a look at this.

Batman shows a news clip, the newscaster is in a helicopter with a camera man

News Reporter

Cat Grant here with the Daily Planet in Portugal, Spain, which seems to be the epicenter of this natural disaster of epic proportions, we only wonder what this spells for the fate of our planet, and how we’ll- LOOK OUT!

A giant tentacle smashes a nearby building, and the signal goes clear.

John

Then we need to go. Now

Martian Manhunter

We can not just rush in head on, we need a plan

Wonder Woman

We need to start with getting those civilians safe.

Batman

Which is why we’re going to do crowd control beforehand. We expel the situation down here, then we stop it at its source.

Flash

Wait, how are we gonna survive above atmosphere?

Hal

Won’t be a problem. John and I can easily bubble the non space breathers.

Flash

Bubble?

Hal

Yeah, we can-

John

Just trust us, we’re getting off topic.

Superman

Then it’s settled. Save civilians, then unplug Starro at his source.

John

Whatever you guys do, do not touch the stars. Starro uses them to take control of whoever comes in contact with it.

Batman

Understood. Let’s get going.

Hal

To Portugal? How are you supposed to get there?

Batman smirks.

Batman is in his plane.

Hal

He has a bat themed private jet. Of course he does.

Batman speaks to the other leaguers through the mental link.

Batman

We need to split off into groups. Superman and Wonder Woman, you’re our alpha heavy hitters. Lantern 1, Martian Manhunter, you’re beta. Flash, you’ll be going solo, you can make up the distance. And Lantern 2, you’ll be with me in gamma.

Hal

Well that’s fun.

Wonder Woman

Superman and I have just touched down in Portugal.

John

So have Hal, J’onn and I

Flash

Jesus, I’ve been here. Probably should’ve said something.

Batman

Touching down now. We all know what we need to do. Godspeed.

In their section of Portugal, John, J’onn and Hal speak out loud.

Hal

I’m starting to really hate that guy.

John

He’s.. efficient. But we have our orders Hal.

Hal

That’s the thing, who is it we’re taking orders from? Some guy in a bat costume?

John

Hal, listen-

Hal

John we don’t know this guy! We don’t know any of these guys! Why don’t the three of us just-

Martian Manhunter

Hal, we are incredibly constrained for time. We, as a team, collectively gave him authority a long time ago.

Hal

Yeah, how is that?

Martian Manhunter

I’ve been inside all of your minds, I know that we all agree with his plan. Including you. Please Hal, we will not be able to win divided.

Hal contemplates this.

Hal

Stay outta my head next time, yeah?

He flies off to go find Batman, who’s rescuing civilians and fighting Starroized ones. After he’s finished, GL touches down behind him.

Batman

Took you long enough.

Hal

Listen pal, I get the whole routine, you’re the big man and everybody needs to listen to you. But the truth is you’re nothing special, you don’t run fast, you’re not super strong, you don’t even fly! You’re just a guy in a bat costume.

Batman

It’s not a routine.

Hal

What?

Batman

It’s not a routine. I don’t think I’m in charge, I know I’m in charge. I made a plan, everyone here seems to agree with said plan, they all know their roles, all except for you. We already have a Lantern, so if you’re too busy feeling inferior, you can leave. Your role will be filled.

Hal

Now listen here-

Suddenly, the two hear a rumbling come from nearby. It’s a building that’s about to fall

Hal

I got this.

Batman

Wait!

Hal flies over to the building and holds it up with a construct. Suddenly, the bottom of the building completely destructs and it turns into a dust cloud with nearby civilians present. Superman hears this with his hearing, and immediately flies to save every civilian nearby. He lands them in a safe spot.

Superman

Are you all right?

They thank him, as Superman turns around they notice a star on his back and run.

Batman

Superman! There’s a star on your back get it off!

It’s too late, the star has already reached Superman’s face. This brain controlled Superman heads straight for Batman, but is stopped by Hal.

Batman (Mental Link)

Team, Superman has been compromised. I repeat, Superman has been compromised. Everybody meet at my location, he is now top priority.

Batman

Lantern! Open the shield!

Hal opens it for Batman to throw a smoke bomb around Superman

Hal

Smoke? Can’t he see through that?

Batman

It’s lead based, he can’t see through that. Keep hitting him with constructs while he’s in the smoke screen, keep him busy until the others arrive.

Batman calls Alfred at the Batcave.

Batman

Alfred. I need the Hellbat armor. How long until the deployment Batwing can get here?

Alfred

Bruce, you are well aware of the toll that suit takes on your body, are you not?

Batman

That doesn’t matter right now, when will it be here?

Alfred

(Sighs) About two minutes sir. Keep stalling.

Batman

Good. And send the one with the.. modifications.

Alfred

Those modifications?

Batman

Let’s just say things turned sideways.

Hal creates a giant rock em sock em robot to keep punching Superman, leaving him annoyed. Finally, Superman flies upwards, and heads straight for Hal. Hal forms a giant bubble around himself before impact.

Hal

Didn’t keep him very occupied!

Suddenly, MM wraps himself around Superman, and John constrains him with a green crane. Wonder Woman flies up and repeatedly hits Superman in the face.

Flash

Can I get a stairway to Superman?

Hal

You got it.

Hal constructs a stairway for Flash, and Flash runs up the thing to punch Superman in the stomach at super speed. Finally, Superman headbutts Wonder Woman away, and knees the Flash, so they both end up flying away. He manages to break the Lantern construct, and remove Martian Manhunter from his skin like a peel.

On the ground, a star crawls up Wonder Woman, mind controlling her as well. She immediately heads for Flash with her sword, who’s still on the ground unconscious. She’s about to stab him as he suddenly wakes up, dodging her strikes at super speed. She keeps swiping at him, and he keeps dodging.

Flash (Mental Link)

Need a (swipe) hand here (swipe) Wonder Woman is (swipe) compromised! (swipe)

Batman (Mental Link)

Hal! Go deal with Wonder Woman! We’ll deal with Superman.

Hal

More orders. Yay.

Hal flies over to fight Wonder Woman with Flash, meanwhile Batman sets off a large flare to get Superman to the ground. As he lands, he’s punched by John’s giant construct hand.

John

So you are crazy?

Batman

We have the advantage on the ground.

John

He can rip right through you, you’re aware of that right?

Batman

Not exactly.

While Martian Manhunter and Superman are fighting, Batman grapples away to the Hellbat capsule. He enters the costume, and glides back into the fight. Meanwhile, Hal and Flash are fighting Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is hacking on Green Lantern’s bubble, trying to break in.

Hal

This bubble won’t last forever!

Flash

It’s only as strong as you can think it is right? Wow it really won’t last forever

Hal

First, screw you, second, do something please!

Flash

Don’t worry, think I got it buddy.

Flash pushed WW away at superspeed, then runs around her, creating a vortex.

Flash (Mental Link)

If I can run around her at the speed of sound I can remove the oxygen from her lungs, but only enough to incapacitate her. How much oxygen does Wonder Woman carry? How long will this take? When this is all over I really should-

John (Mental Link)

Flash, we can all hear you.

Flash (Mental Link)

My bad! This mental link should really have a clear-

Flash

Ugh!

Wonder Woman pinpoints and punches Flash, launching him a couple hundred feet.

Hal

Flash? What’s going on, I already miss your constant rambling. Oh shit-

Hal flies over to the unconscious Flash to form a bubble before WW can kill him. WW hacks at the bubble, and suddenly she is hit by a jet of water. Aquaman comes from nowhere.

Aquaman

Diana. It’s been a while.

Wonder Woman lunges at Aquaman with her sword, which Aquaman blocks with his trident. He uses the trident to launch more water at Diana’s face.

Aquaman

If I knew you were still mad about what happened, I’d have come to visit sooner.

Diana runs and punches Arthur in the face, he whacks her with the trident again. They struggle with each other, sword vs trident. Aquman yells at Green Lantern

Aquaman

How do these starfishes work?

Green Lantern

They mind control whoever’s face they’re grabbing, you have to knock her out for it to come off!

Aquaman

And you’re aware of how difficult that is surface dweller?

Green Lantern

I have a decent idea!

Meanwhile, Superman fights J’onn and John. As Superman attempts to land a blow on John, Batman catches it in his hellbat suit.

John

You.. changed clothes?

Batman

Hellbat armor. When you need to defeat a god, you need to come prepared.

Batman punches Superman in the gut, to no avail.

Batman

Hm.

Superman throws Batman across the street into another building. MM grows his fist to punch him in the face, knocking him back. Batman comes back, with the armor now powered by green lining. Batman makes a fist, and his knuckles turn green. He punches Superman in the stomach and Superman feels it. Batman keeps punching.

Batman

If you can hear me, Superman. I’m sorry.

Batman pounds against Superman’s back, rendering him unconscious. He immediately smushes the star.

John

The hell was that?

Martian Manhunter

Kryptonite. Why do you have Kryptonite?

Batman

For times like these.

Martian Manhunter

Superman didn’t know about this.

Batman is silent.

John

Batman, did Superman know about this?

Batman

I did what I had to. Instead of berating me, we should get on with the plan.

Batman (Mental Link)

Flash, GL, how is it coming with Wonder Woman?

GL and Aquaman are currently restraining Wonder Woman, with Flash still out cold. Green Lantern had a construct clasp around WW, with Aquaman repeatedly hitting her with the trident.

Green Lantern (Mental Link)

It’s coming!

Wonder Woman breaks the construct, and Aquaman has to blast her back into the ocean. He jumps in after her, and underwater Aquaman uses his advantage to defeat Wonder Woman. The star floats up, Aquaman stabs it, and he throws WW back onto the surface, carrying her body over to Lantern. He stared at Hal, breathing heavily, but he’s won.

The scene cuts to Lantern helping a hurt Flash limp over to the League, and Aquaman carrying Wonder Woman.

John

Who’s this?

Batman

The Aquaman. King of Atlantis.

John

Atlantis? That exists?

Aquaman

Not like you were supposed to know, surface dweller. How does the bat?

Batman

I do my research.

Hal

Who cares who's the king of where? The point is he’s here to help.

John

And what happened to Flash?

Flash

Wonder Woman.

Hal

Heh. Not fast enough I guess.

Martian Manhunter

Should we really be bringing an injured soldier onto the battlefield?

Flash

I’m fine. My speed allows me to heal 30 times faster than normal. Give me 5 minutes.

Flash let’s go of Hal and limps over to the side, sitting down and resting.

Batman

5 minutes that we don’t have.

John

What else are we supposed to do? We’re down two heavy hitters and a speedster. We need to get to full strength.

Superman

Where- what happened?

Martian Manhunter

Your mind had been taken over. Welcome back Superman.

Superman

Oh God, did I-

Batman

We took care of it.

Superman

Good.. good. What are you wearing?

Everybody is silent.

Batman

Specialized armor made to battle threats far stronger than I am.

Superman

That was enough? To take me down?

Again, silence.

Batman

Superman, listen-

Superman

What was in the suit? Oh my God.

Batman

It was the only way. I couldn’t let you-

Superman

How long have you had it for?

Batman is silent.

Superman

Get rid of it.

Batman

We’re about to go against one of the biggest threats we’ve ever seen.

Superman

Get rid of it.

Batman and Superman stare at each other, uneasily. The moment is tense.

Batman

Alfred, call the batwing to my location. Retract the Hellbat armor.

Alfred

Of course, Master Wayne.

Batman steps out of the armor as it opens from the back, the Batwing magnetically picks it up as it enters another capsule. It flies away.

Batman

Happy?

Superman

Not nearly.

Batman

Well we can talk about it after this is over.

Diana begins to wake up.

Wonder Woman

What- what happened?

The league stares at her, the scene cuts.

Act II[]

The scene cuts to a shot of the group in the middle of the street. The area is evacuated, Flash is stretching and trying to heal.

Wonder Woman

By Hera. It was all so.. so..

Superman

Tranquil. It’s strange, this was the closest I’ve felt at.. peace.

Wonder Woman

Like the songs of the siren. We need to stop this at its source, such an evil could control the entire galaxy much less the Earth.

Batman

Agreed. Flash, how are you feeling?

Flash

Better already.

Batman

Good. Lanterns, you can get us up there?

Hal smirks

Hal

You even have to ask?

Hal and John carry two bubbles into space. Hal’s is filled with Batman and Flash, John’s is filled with Wonder Woman and Aquaman. J’onn and Superman fly besides them.

Hal

You know, I could’ve made like a race car or a rocket ship or something. Didn’t literally have to be a bubble.

Batman

Focus on the mission, Lantern. The planet is right ahead.

Superman

Is that.. Betrassus.

Martian Manhunter

You’re familiar?

Superman

I’ve heard stories. One of the most famous royal kingdoms in the galaxy, one of the proudest civilizations. What has happened..

John

One more reason on the “why we need to stop Starro” list. It’s a long list.

Meanwhile, Aquaman and Diana speak in the bubble. They’ve been silent for most of the ride.

Aquaman

How have you been.

Wonder Woman

Like you care.

Aquaman

Diana, I do. Really. Listen, we left things off on-

Wonder Woman

I am not interested in reminiscing. We need to complete this mission and let it be the end of it.

More silence.

Wonder Woman

I trusted you Arthur.

Aquaman

I know, Diana, and I’m hoping you can once more!

Wonder Woman

You don’t get it? I’m not falling for it again Arthur. I’m done trusting you.

Martian Manhunter (Mental Link)

We’ve arrived.

Wide shot of the entire planet. Starro occupies an entire continent, and is visible from space. His eye is closed, he seems to be resting.

Hal

Is he sleeping?

Martian Manhunter

I believe he is reserving his energy. Trying to gather it for something larger.

They float above the surface of Betrassus, Diana flies while the Lanterns hold the remaining heroes in bubbles.

John

We shouldn’t step on the surface of the planet, Starro will feel the vibrations and turn us into those.

John points at the standing cocoons on the planet. As he does, the planet begins to rumble. Starro speaks.

Starro (Mental)

I can hear you.

Martian Manhunter

What? But he’s-

Starro (Mental)

Rest? There is no need for me to rest. I feed off the desires of my prey, that is all the energy I will ever need. Today, heroes, today you will be my prey.

Roots from the planet begin to strike at the Lantern bubbles, cracking them. One of them grabs Wonder Woman’s feet, she begins hacking at it with her sword. Superman and Martian Manhunter are both laser visioning other roots.

Starro (Mental)

Listen, listen to my sweet serenade. Everything you have ever wanted, made possible by me. Lost family, loved ones, worlds. They can all be restored. They can all be made whole again.

The first to succumb is Superman, he is eventually placed in a cocoon and is retracted to the planet. His face is left open, with only a star to cover it.

Diana

Kal-El!

Diana flies for Superman, but feels the effect too. She doesn’t go to sleep (neither did Superman), her eyes simply gaze as her body becomes motionless. The same thing happens to her. As Starro grows stronger, he cracks the bubbles.

John

Jesus Christ! What’s going on?

Martian Manhunter

Wonder Woman and Superman have succumbed to his trap! They’re like all the others now

Batman grabs Aquaman as he falls, attempting to grapple away. Flash runs away from roots trying to grab him. Eventually, they are all caught and put to the same fate.

Starro (Mental)

The last time that we met, Martian, you resisted my mental corruption. This time I plan on something more.. Physical than mental.

Martian Manhunter is entirely grabbed by the roots of the planet, and dragged under a nearby volcano. Here, he can’t move due to his psychological weakness to fire and extreme heat.

John

J’onn!

John and Hal both blast back roots, as some fall more take their place. They advance closer and closer.

Starro (Mental)

Green Lanterns.. Stubborn as ever.

John

Hey Hal

Hal

Yeah John?

John

Whatever happens, it’s been an honor.

Hal

We’re not going to die. We’re Green Lanterns.

John

Heh. Here’s hoping you’re right.

John is grabbed by a root, and slowly succumbs.

Hal is left alone, surrounded by roots, until he is finally grabbed. He does not succumb immediately, but he is weakening.

Hal’s eyes open wide.

Finally, he succumbs to the same fate.

A young Hal Jordan is standing outside of an airstrip, cheering on his father as he flies. There, he meets a young Carol Ferris.

Hal

Hey! That’s my dad up there! He’s in the airplane!

Carol

Yeah! Well my dad owns the airplane!

Hal is unfazed, he continues to cheer as the little girl gets annoyed and walks back to her dad. Willard Ferris is on a radio, talking to air pilot Martin Jordan.

Carol

Daddy! Daddy, that mean boy is ignoring me!

Willard

One second sweetheart. What’s the issue, Jordan?

Martin

It’s the oil! It’s eating up real fast, Willard, I think that was my last torque pin gone! I don’t know how long this thing’s gonna last!

Willard

This is investor day, Jordan. Do you know what that means? We need you to-

Martin

Listen to me! This thing is going down either right here or in Coast City, and right here nobody else gets hurt.

Willard

Twenty million dollars and our last seven years of development! That’s what you have up in the air, Martin! Think of your wife! Think of Hal, he’s watching you right now! You think he wants to see his daddy go up in flames? Keep it up Jordan!

Martin contemplates this and sighs, having already made up his mind.

Martin

Willard, make sure my boy’s taken care of.

Willard

Martin, wait!-

Suddenly, the radio cuts off as Martin performs a nosedive right for the pavement. The crowd is shocked and Hal is both confused and terrified. At the last minute, he’s saved by a glowing green construct hand catching the plane and landing it safely. Martin gets out of the jet, shocked, and the Lantern is revealed to be Abin Sur. He shakes his hand and helps him out, and then flies back off into the sky. Hal watches the green streak in the sky, amazed.

Fast forward 10 years, Hal is in his room playing space invaders. Hal’s little brother, Jim, enters his room.

Jim

Can I play?

Hal

Not right now Jim, I’m trying to beat my high score

Jim

Right. Well Mom’s been looking for you, dinner’s ready and.. Jack’s home.

Hal

Pass.

Jim

Please, Hal? You know this is really important to mom.

Hal

Because he’s her favorite.

Jim

You.. you really think so?

Hal

Jim I didn’t mean it like that- yeah I’ll be down soon. I’m starving anyways

Jim smiles as he leaves the room. Hal heads downstairs, and his Mom (Jessica) is swarming around Jack as he brings his bags in.

Jessica

Hal, dear! Jack is back, isn’t this wonderful?

Hal

Hey Jack.

Jack

Little Harry! It’s been a minute kiddo.

Hal

(Sighs) Welcome back, Jack. Would love to continue this but I’m starving. How’s the food mom?

The Jordan family is now at the dinner table, with Jessica finishing up and serving Jim last.

Jim

Food looks delicious mom.

Jessica

Thank you sweetie. So Jack, tell us all about law school.

Jack

God, where do I start? Well, it’s a lot of work but we knew that before we got into-

Hal zones out of the conversation, focusing on the empty chair at the dinner table. He has momentary flashbacks to when he was a kid staring at the planes, the jet almost crashing, Abin Sur saving Martin’s life. Hal has an outburst and cuts off Jack’s conversation.

Jack

Jessica

Now, now, Jack. He’s running late, but he’ll be here Hal.

Hal

He’s always running late.

Jessica

Your father is a very busy man, you know this Hal.

Hal

Jessica

No mom I mean it! Jack came home from Berkley and he’s still not here! It’s Jack!

Jack

Hal leaves the house and slams the door.

Hal is in the driver’s seat of his truck, and Jim runs up to the passenger’s window

Hal

Jim

Please, don’t go. Mom’s been planning this forever, and we’re all really excited to have Jack back.

Hal

We? I can’t sit next to that guy for another minute.

Jim

Hal takes a pause.

Jim is saddened and Hal notices this.

Hal

Hey, uh, do you wanna have some fun?

The brothers drive through a neighborhood, speeding.

Hal

Alright, Jim, you’re gonna take that baseball bat, and everytime you see a mailbox you’re gonna hit it as hard as you can.

Jim

Are you sure about this?

Hal

Of course I am, I do it all the time! Just lean a little out the window and smash them! Oh, and keep your seatbelt on!

Jim

Oh- okay!

Jim leans out of the window, and the truck approaches a mailbox. He takes the bat and smashes it down.

Hal

Good shit Jim! Just like that! Hit another one!

Jim

Hal, I really don’t know about this-

Hal

Just trust me!

Jim crushes another mailbox, and starts laughing, so does Hal.

Hal

See? It’s fun! We’re having fun!

Jim keeps smashing mailboxes and the duo keeps laughing, until Jim notices blue and red lights flashing in the windshield

Jim

Uh, Hal?

Suddenly, the siren begins to play

Hal

Damn.

Hal pulls over the truck, and the cop heads to his window.

Cop

You wanna explain what exactly you boys were doing?

Hal gives a nervous chuckle while Jim sits down completely petrified.

At the police precinct, Hal and Jim wait for their mom to come pick them up. Hal’s mom walks in with Jack, and Jim runs right to his mother and hugs her, his face hidden in her stomach. Jack looks over at Hal with anger.

Jack

Nice one, asshole.

Hal looks down in disappointment, until he hears a familiar voice.

Martin

Son, we need to talk.

Outside of the precinct, Martin and Hal speak while their family waits in the car.

Hal

Nice of you to show up.

Martin

Son, I’m sorry I can’t be as home as much as I might want to be, but that is no excuse for you to act like this.

Hal

Tsh. As much as you want to be- I mean do you even want to be here? You too ashamed of your screw up son?

Martin

You are not a screw up.

Hal

Really, because somehow Jack finds a way to remind me every time that we meet.

Martin

What? Bootcamp- what are you talking about?

Martin

Whatever issues you have with me or your brother are going to be RESOLVED before you come home. And when you do come home, you’ll be an upstanding citizen, and not this, this BRAT! You will be somebody that I’m PROUD to call my son!

Hal takes a pause, digesting the information

Martin

Hal

Martin

Hal, listen to me-

No! No, why should I! You’ve been gone the past month and a half, and suddenly you just drop into my life screaming about bootcamp! I was doing fine without you!

Martin

CLEARLY THAT WASN’T THE CASE!

Hal scowls at his father, turns around and walks away.

Martin

Hal! HAL! HAL!

Hal keeps walking, away from the sounds of his father and the precinct. He ends up in a nearby bus station, sleeping on one of the chairs.

Clerk

Departure for Mesa, Arizona, arriving in two minutes.

Hal wakes up, and heads for the arriving bus. As he waits, his family’s car pulls up and his father jumps out.

Martin

Hal! Hal, how the hell did you end up over here? This is the opposite end of the city!

Hal

Took a bus.

Martin

Hal, listen, come home! Please, just forget what’s happened today, I will make more time for you! Your mother is worried sick!

The bus arrives at the station

Martin

Hal! Please!

Hal

I’ll see you later, Dad.

Hal steps on the bus, and it leaves for Arizona as his family watches devastated.

Hal arrives at a NASA outpost, hoping to get a job. He speaks with the man hiring there.

Clerk

Hm, you graduate high school?

Hal

Yes sir.

Clerk

Says here you quit your last job at Big Belly Burger. Got bored?

Hal

No sir, I moved.

Clerk

Really? Where from?

Hal

Uh Coast City, California sir.

Clerk

That’s a long way to move from son.

Hal

Yeah I just had to get.. out

Clerk

(Sighs) Listen, I just don’t know if we-

Hal

Wait! Wait, please! I can do anything you need me to, paperwork, cleaning, hell I can be your mailman! Anything you need

Fast forward 7 years later, Hal is now 25 years old working the desk at the Space Station. He goes home to his apartment, bored of his job and waiting for the chance to become an Astronaut, that chance comes in the mail.

He opens it and reads a letter that says “Welcome to the Interceptor XI, Hal Jordan”

Hal smirks.

Hal

It’s about damn time.

The next day at work, Hal looks for somebody to show him what he needs to do to become an astronaut, he finds his boss Mr. Kevin Ambler.

Hal

Mr. Ambler!

Mr. Ambler

Hal! Somebody’s waiting for you down the hall, she said she wanted to speak to you?

Hal

She? She hot?

Mr. Ambler

Just get down the hallway, Jordan. Oh- and congratulations.

Hal walks down the hallway to see a businesswoman standing there for him, waiting.

Hal

Hello, and who may I have the pleasure of speaking to?

Carol

Carol. Carol Ferris, Ferris Aircrafts.

Hal

Well Carol- wait, wait Carol?

Carol

Hey Hal. It’s been a while.

Hal

Yeah, like 17 years! I haven’t seen you since the Green Light incident

Carol

Yeah, it has been some time hasn’t it. Anyways, I started to wonder about you-

Hal

Oh?

Carol

Not like that. Anyways, I heard you weren’t living in Coast City anymore, then I went to check on your parents.. they’re worried sick Hal.

Hal

Jesus, they really did a number on you

Carol

It’s not an act Hal, they’re serious.

Hal

And I seriously don’t care, I’m not going back to Coast City.

Carol

Which is what I figured, so to alleviate their tension I promised I would make life as good here for you as I can. They told me you loved astronomy and aliens and I found out that you work here, a space station that Ferris Industries GENEROUSLY funds

Hal

Wait so, you’re the one who-

Carol

Yes. I pulled some strings and, well you’ll be co-piloting our Ferris Aircraft Interceptor on its way to the moon. You’ll be looking for precious materials, anything that’s sustainable.

Hal

Jesus Christ, Carol I don’t know what to say

Carol

Don’t worry about it. But uh, call your parents Hal. Please, let them know you’re okay. You of all people should know how short life might be.

Carol walks away, and Hal stands there conflicted. He takes out his flip phone, and he sees Dad right there as a contact. He’s close to pushing the button, but he can’t, and he walks away.

2 years later, Hal has completed his astronaut training. He’s in the interceptor as it’s ready to launch into space, piloting the ship is Guy Gardner, and the rest of the crew consists of Hank and Terry Henshaw.

Guy

Liftoff in 5..4..3..2.. and we have liftoff boys and girl.

The rocket launches up into the sky, with a crowd of people cheering. You can see Carol on the ground smiling, and the Jordans watch the launch on the news at their house, still proud of their son.

As they break into space, they release the rockets and are only in the shuttle.

Guy

And we’ve broken through the atmosphere. Lady and gents, welcome to space.

Hal

Jesus Christ, it’s- it’s beautiful

Hank

You said it. This is my 4th time here, still can’t get over it.

Carol (Comms)

How are you guys holding up?

Guy

Just fine Ms. Ferris, we broke atmosphere and here heading for the moon now.

Carol (Comms)

Thank you all. Please, remember to be mindful of asteroids, satellites and obstructions of the sort.

Hal

Aw, you care about me Carol?

Carol (Comms)

I care about your 3 other crewmates and that $26 million rocket you’re flying in. Babysit Hal for me you guys, would ya?

Terry

Don’t even worry Ms. Ferris, we’ve got that under control.

Carol (Comms)

Great. Well, I’ve got to get going. Good luck.

Carol switches off the Comms.

Hal

So.. are we there yet?

Guy

Funny, we got about 3 more days Jordan.

Hal

I’ve got some sleep to catch up on anyways.

The ship travels through space, moving slowly until it gets to the moon, where Guy is able to land it. They open the door with their suits on.

Guy

One small step for man..

They alll walk behind Guy as they explore the moon.

Hal

Wow.

Hank

You can say that again. Come on fellas, let’s get to the mission.

They mine at moon rocks and use tools to measure the amount of water inside of them, also looking for precious minerals. The day ends and they haven’t found anything yet.

Hal

Jesus Christ, I’m exhausted. How do you guys do it?

Terry

We take it one step at a time.

Guy

I keep my mind on the paycheck.

Hal

Heh. Both good advice. How long are we here for again?

Hank

About 4 months.

Hal

Sounds fun.

An unspecified amount of time goes by, the astronauts journey further into the moon. Suddenly, Hank’s leg gets caught by a crevice

Hank

Guys! Guys, I need some help here!

Guy

Hold on, Hank, we’re coming!

The crew try to help Hank out of the crevice, but they all end up falling down a hole. They get up to find a massive cave

Terry

Hanky? Hank are you okay?

Hank

Yeah, yeah I’m fine. But uh- where are we?

Hal

Funny. I was just about to ask you.

Guy

Flashlights on if you have em guys.

They each turn their flashlights on.

Guy

Follow me, we’re going to see what’s over that way, it might be an exit. And don’t split up.

The crew walk through the cave, stumbling for what seems like hours.

Hal

We need to take a rest Guy.

Guy

In a minute, just- woah. What is that?

Guy sees a glowing green light, and the rest of the crew notices it too.

Hank

Should we really be walking towards that?

Hal

Only one way to find out..

In the lead, Hal and Guy walk towards the source of the green light, and they find a dead alien in a spaceship: Abin Sur.

Guy

What the hell..

Hal

Is that a- oh God

Hal has flashbacks to the alien saving his father.

Hal

No- no.

Guy

Hal? Is everything okay?

Hal

Yeah, just. Yeah. Let’s take a closer look.

The duo step closer, and the ring on his finger begins to levitate.

Guy

Is that a.. a ring?

Finally, it starts to fly and chooses Guy. Guy is transformed into a Green Lantern, much to Hal’s surprise

Guy

What’s.. what’s going on?

Hal

I don’t- just wow.

Suddenly, Hal hears a voice in his head.

Abin Sur

Hal.

He turns towards the body, it’s lips aren’t moving but it’s voice is speaking.

Abin Sur

Wake up Hal. Wake up. You are not yet finished. Wake up.

Hal snaps awake, hidden in his cocoon, his green light pierces through the cocoon, and he uses it to melt the cocoons off the other leaguers, severely weakening Starro in the process.

What the- what’s going on?

Hal

No time to explain, Superman travel to the core and find J’onn, we need to end this.

Superman

On it.

Superman flies up and crashes straight into the crust of the planet, on his way to find MM.

Starro

You FOOLS! I give you all lives you couldn’t DREAM to even comprehend

Aquaman

A facade!

Starro

You wouldn’t have even NOTICED! IF YOU HAD JUST STAYED PUT!

Starro tries to crush the members with his tentacle, they narrowly avoid this. Superman comes back up with a weakened MM.

John

J’onn! Is he okay?

Martian Manhunter

I’m fine, I will be fine.

Batman

Good because we need to focus on Starro

Aquaman

Well what’s the plan?

Wonder Woman

We aim for his eye!

Flash

What’s to stop him from taking our minds again?

Hal

He’s been weakened by whatever I did, if he could do it again he would right now

Superman

Then we have no time to waste. We do this and we do this now.

Act III[]

As Starro attacks with his tentacle, the league does what they can to Pierce his skin. Swords, laser vision, projectiles, etc.

Aquaman

It’s no good, the damn thing keeps regenerating!

Wonder Woman

I can solve that.

She jumps in the air and flies straight for his eye, before she can get there he shields it with a tentacle.

Starro

I am too fast for the likes of you nitwits. There is no defeating me, soon I will have complete psychic control over the galaxy.

Superman

I hear something.. crumbling off the planet!

Superman flies up to see chunks of the planet falling towards Earth.

Superman

Giant chunks of mountains are being hurled at the Earth! We need to stop it now!

Batman

John, Martian Manhunter, go help Clark protect the Earth!

John

But what about here?

Batman

If those rocks hit Earth then all this would be for nothing! Now go!

They fly towards Superman as they head back for Earth.

Batman

Flash! See how fast you can reach his eye!

Flash

You got it!

The Flash runs up his tentacle, there’s a slow mo scene of Flash jumping towards his eye with his fist out, but Starro literally blinks before Flash can reach it. Flash runs back to report it.

Flash

Just one second.

Flash does the same thing but faster, Starro still blocks it. He runs back.

Flash

Okay last try

He tries it again, at the speed of light, gets blocked again.

Flash

He’s reacting faster than I can get there.

Batman

Then we need to pry the eye open. Hal?

Green Lantern

Got it.

While Hal goes to pry his eye open, Aquaman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Flash each fight against the attacking tentacles, looking for ways to pierce them.

Meanwhile, Superman, Martian Manhunter, and John are all finding ways to keep the Earth from being destroyed by Betrassan rocks. Superman flies through one of them, destroying it entirely, John catches the debris and aims it towards the sun. He then redirects another rock towards the Sun. Martian Manhunter shapeshifts around a rock and crushes it into dust. They keep doing this until an especially large one comes for them.

Martian Manhunter (Mental Link)

Establishing a mental link, do we have a plan for that one?

Green Lantern (Mental Link)

It’s the size of Texas! How would we move it?

Superman (Mental Link)

Together. John, get behind it and pull with a construct. J’onn and I will push it towards you.

They all go along with the plan, struggling with pushing and pulling.

They all push the rock for the Sun, and it causes a giant explosion that Lantern shields them all from.

Quickly, we must return to Betrassus and help the others!

On Betrassus, Hal is struggling to get close to the eye without a tentacle trying to hit him.

Hal

I can’t get close!

Batman

Then we need to strap down the tentacles, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, hold him down! Flash, run around and look for any openings!

Flash begins to run.

Aquaman

That won’t work, there’s only the two of us!

Wonder Woman

I have to agree, I don’t see how we beat him alone!

Batman

We don’t! We’re stalling until the cavalry arrives.

Flash lands back at Batman.

Flash

The eye is the only way, everywhere else is armored

Batman

Then we continue with the plan. Looks like it won’t take us very long.

Batman points up, and the trio saving the Earth return. They land near Batman, debriefing him.

Batman

I assume the Earth is safe?

Superman

Every single asteroid accounted for.

Batman

Good. John you need to go help Hal pry open Starro’s eye, you two need to help pin down his tentacles, and set up a mental link J’onn.

Hal is in the air still narrowly dodging the tentacle swipes, Superman flies for one and holds it down, Martian does with the other too. John flies up towards Hal to help pry the eye open.

Hal

About time

John

Heh. Shut up rook.

The two successfully hold the eye lid open, inserting light through the closed eyelid and forcing it open.

Starro

No! What are you doing!

Batman

Flash! Now!

Flash runs up the monster and stomps on his open eye, Starro shrieks. He falls down, no longer reactive.

Wonder Woman, take the sword and-

Aquaman (Mental Link)

She’s way ahead of you

AHHHH!!!!!!! (Warrior cry)

She drives her sword in the eye of Starro, officially killing him.

Starro

fools... starro is… starro is eternal…

Superman flies around lasering the underback of Starro, removing his grip from the planet. He simply floats off into space, a dead carcass. The cocoons begin to melt off all the people on the planet.

The heroes stand around each other, triumphant.

Flash

So.. we did it.

Superman

We have.

Two weeks pass, the Earth is rebuilt from the damage. Betrassus is back in it’s own solar system. The Green Lantern Corps helps to rebuild Betrassus, Hal and John are celebrated on Oa. Back on Earth, Bruce Wayne drives to an empty white museum type building. The rest of the league meets him there.

Bruce Wayne

Welcome.

Superman and Wonder Woman smirk.

Hal

Who’s this guy? Batman told us to meet him here.

Flash

That’s Bruce Wayne, he’s like the richest guy in Gotham City.

Aquaman

That doesn’t much explain what he’s doing here.

Bruce

From now on, I’ll be funding this team, every mission, every cost will be on me for the uh.. Superman, what did you call us?

Superman

The Justice League.

Bruce

The Justice League. Follow me inside if you all will.

They walk inside the giant building, it has displays of all of their adventures and costumes. They get to a back wall, and Bruce puts his hand on a sensor. The wall opens, revealing a meeting room.

Bruce

Welcome to our HQ. I think Superman called it the Hall of Justice.

John

Listen, this is all very generous, but why do you keep saying we? Us, where is this coming from? And where’s Batman?

Bruce

I guess I keep my identity too well. It’s me, I’m Batman.

Flash, and Hal look at him then burst into tears.

Hal

There’s no way you’re Batman dude!

Bruce

J’onn, probe my mind.

Martian Manhunter

He tells the truth. This is the Batman.

Flash

Holy- you gotta teach me how you do it.

Aquaman

Listen, this is all great, but I’m not here to make this a commonality. I need to get back to my Kingdom, I have no time for a League.

Martian Manhunter

And I into space. I need to find my people, my place is not on this planet.

Batman

I thought you two would say something like that. How about provisional membership? We call on you during emergencies, and you aren’t required to show up. But appreciated. No meetings or debriefings or anything like that.

Aquaman

Then I would be honored.

Martian Manhunter

Batman

Good. Who else needs a provisional membership?

John

Hal

John? What, you’re quitting too?

John

I’m not quitting, you didn't just hear the guy? There’s enough Lanterns on Earth, one of us needs to protect the rest of this sector. I trust you Hal.

Hal smiles.

Hal

Okay, but we’re operating here? Aren’t we a super secret private strike force?

Batman

John and Superman volunteered to work on that. Computer, display the Watchtower.

The computer shows a holographic display of the watchtower.

Superman

It’s a space satellite that serves as our true base of operations, while we use this one as a.. Well a front.

Flash

That’s not kinda shady?

John

As long as it keeps the bad guys off your backs.

Wonder Woman

This is nice, Bruce, but we should get going.

Batman

You’re right. Let’s get going.

The League stands on stage in front of a crowd of cheering Americans, being awarded by Defense Secretary Snapper Carr. With their medals of victory, on, Carr introduces them.

Carr

These heroes, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, the Green Lanterns, Superman, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter have saved us from impending doom. Please, give a round of applause for.. The Justice League!

The crowd cheers.

In space, John and Hal speak.

How’s construction going?

John

It’s coming along, really is. Never built a huge space base before but I’ve seen more complex. Built more complex. How’s the league?

Hal

It’s good. We just elected Wonder Woman as our Chairwoman and Superman as our ambassador. I think she deserves it, she’s been active in this hero thing for who knows how long. Plus she’s pretty hot.

John

Ha! Yeah, you’re gonna have to get through Aquaman for that.

Hal

Fishguy? Please. Hey uh.. John when we were on Betrassus, you know in our comas, Starro put me in some reality where my Dad never died. I became an astronaut, I saw Abin Sur die again.

John

Hal

Green Arrow is at a target range, destroying multiple robots with a bow. Green Lantern floats behind him.

Hawkman and Hawkwoman have just saved some children from a rampaging truck, apprehending the driver. They see Batman perched upon a rooftop.

The scene switches back to Batman talking in the Hall.
