Gravity Falls would be a 2033 hand-drawn animation hybrid supernatural adventure mystery comedy produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. A follow-up to the 2013 Disney animated series of the same name by Alex Hirsch and sequel to Gravity Falls Takes: Pacifica and Gravity Falls Tales: Stan & Stan, the film would be directed by Matt Braly, while Hirsch and Dana Terrace would produce, with the three would write the screenplay alongside Jennifer Lee and former Gravity Falls writers Sage Cotungo, Emmy Ciciriega, and Shion Takeuchi, from an story by Terrace, Braly, Hirsch, and Lee, and Suzanna Olson and Lee would serve as executive-producers. The film would star Jason Ritter, Kristen Schaal, Dee Bradley Baker, and Hirsch, reprising their voice roles from the series, with Christopher Lloyd. Mark Mothersbaugh would compose the score for the film.
In early 2029, it would be reported that Hirsch is set to produce an animated film adaptation of Gravity Falls alongside two spin-off films, with Lee and Hirsch co-writing the script. In late 2029, Matt Braly and Dana Terrace would be hired to co-write and produce the film alongside Hirsch, and by early 2030, Braly would be confirmed to be directing the film. In mid- 2030, it would be announced that Ritter and Schaal would be set to reprise their roles from the series as the voices of Dipper and Mabel, respectively.
Gravity Falls would be released in July 15, 2033, and would be critically acclaimed, with critics praising the film's direction, writing, faithfulness to the source material, performances, score, animation, and visual effects. The film would also be a commercial success, earning 987 million dollars at the worldwide box office over a budget of 130 million dollars. The film would earn an Annie Award for Best Animated Feature and a Saturn Award for Best Animated Film, as well as two Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Synopsis[]
Set 5 years after the Weirdmaggedon, Gravity Falls sees Dipper and Mabel coming back to the town for a little reunion to commemorate old memories and create new ones. However, after just one day of being back in town, they already find themselves in a weird situation when a mysteryous new creature begins roaming around with hostile intentions. The Pines and their friends must figure out what this creature wants, while hidden woumds threaten to break their bond.
Voice cast[]
- Jason Ritter as Dipper Pines, the 18-year-old twin of Mabel Pines, and a lover of mysteries and anything supernatural. Ritter would reprise his role from the TV series. John Aoshima and Bruce W. Smith would serve as Dipper's supervising animators.
- Kristen Schaal as Mabel Pines:
The 18-year-old twin of Dipper Pines, and an aspirabt artist who is a big optimist with an eccentric and energetic personality. According to Hirch, the character would be depicted as an aspirant artist in the film because "she has such an imagination and talent it seemed natural for her to take that career". - Dee Bradley Baker as Waddles, Mabel's pet pig, who also gets transported into the live-action world with them. Baker would reprise his role from the TV series. Aaron Springer and Chris Buck would serve as Waddles' supervising animators.
- Alex Hirsch asnStanley Pines, Dipper and Mabel's great uncle, who is a former con man and owner of the Mystery Shack, who also gets transported to the live-action world. Hirsch would reprise his role from the TV series. Stephen Sandoval and Byron Howard would serve as Stanley's supervising animators.
- Eugenio Debrez as Soos, an hispanic friend of Dipper and Mabel's, and the owner of the Mystery Shack. Hirsch, who previously voiced Soos in the TV series, would recast Debrez in the role due to the character's hispanic roots. Matt Braly and Mark Henn would serve as Soos' supervising animators.
- Linda Cardelini as Wendy, a 23-year-old tomboyish girl and Dipper's former crush. Cardellini would reprise her role from the TV series. Joe Pitt and Anthony DeRosa would serve as Wendy's supervising animators.
- J.K. Simmons as Stanford Pines, Stan's six-fingered twin brother and Dipper and Mabel's great uncle, who is a gifted scientist with a fascination with weird events. Simmons wuld reprise his role from the TV series. Stephen Sandoval and Byron Howard would serve as Stanford's supervising animators.
Additionally, Kevin Michael Richardson, Keith Ferguson, Niki Yang, Carl Faruolo, Jackie Buscarino, Andy Merrill, Matt Chapman, and Gregg Turkintong would reprise their roles from the TV series as Sheriff Blubs, Deputy Durlan, Candi Chiu, Grenda Grendanitor, Pacifica Northwest, 8-Ball, Paci-fire, and Toby Determined, respectively. Matt Braly would voice a car that comes to life due to Bill's attack. On Braly and producer Dana Terrace would voice inhabitants of Gravity Falls. Chris and Shane Houghton would voice a Gnome duo at the start of the film.
Music[]
Mark Mothersbaugh would compose the score for the film, which would feature themes from the series by Brad Breeck. Mothersbaugh would be personally asked by Hirsch to compose the score for the film because he felt his work on Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok (2017) "proved that he's able to recreate the score for the series in a very cinematic style". Mothersbaugh would "re-use and recontextualize" each returning character's individual themes from the series.
The film would also feature several background songs in the film, which director Nia DiCosta would explain was inspired by a few episodes featuring background songs, which they concluded "it meant that people wouldn't get mad at using music by modern artists, as long as they were original". Panic! At the Disco and Bebe Rexha would also perform songs for the film's end credits. The song "Call Me Mabel", a parody of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" performed by Kristen Schaal as Mabel and first released on September 25, 2020, would also appear on the film's end credits.
Release[]
Gravity Falls would have its national release in the Regal Hiltop Cinema, Oregon, in June 12, 2033, and would have its worldwide premiere in July 15, 2033, in the El Capitan Theater, Los Angeles.
Marketing[]
The first teaser trailer and poster for Gravity Falls would be released on February 12, 2032, to a generally positive critical reception for its mysteryous atmosphere. Many critics would note a cryptogram hidden within the trailer, which would later be revealed to mean "Welcome back, folks". On November 12, 2032, Hirsch would reveal the film's official poster, while the theatrical trailer would be released the next day. The film's final trailer would be released on February 25, 2027.
As part of the film's promotion, Disney would release two DVDs for the series' season, marking the first time all Gravity Falls episodes were released on DVD. Disney Press would also re-release both the normal and special editions of the "Journal 3" book, which was first released on July 26, 2016. During the weeks preceding the film's release, as well as the film's release month, Disney Channel and Disney XD would air weekly maratons of the entire series.
Hirsch and series' writer Rob Renzetti would write a book titled The History of Gravity Falls, which would depict the ful foundation of the titular town, as part of the film's promotion. Hirsch would also write a prequel comic book set between the events of the series' finale and the film, depicting Dipper and Mabel's adventures before the events of the film. A documental titled Gravity Falls: The Foundation of a Supernatural Town, which would explore how Hirsch created the series, would air on May 12, 2032, on ABC. Additionaly, two new attractions based on Gravity Falls would be created at Disney's Hollywood Studios as a part of the film's promotion: Gravity Falls' Naturally Supernatural Forest, which would center on a tour at the Gravity Falls Forest where the tourists would meet supernatural creatures, and Soos' New Mystery Shack, in which guests help Soos run the Mystery Shack after becoming its new owner.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film would have a weighted rating of 90%, with an average rating of 9/10, based on 220 reviews. The website's critical consensus would read, "A faithful follow-up to the hit series of the same name, Gravity Falls offers enough mystery, fantasy, and humor to satisfy fans of the series, while without leaving newcomers behind". On Metacritic, the film would have a weighted rating of 65 out of 100, based on 50 reviews, indicating "generally positive reviews".
