Godzilla vs Cthulhu is a upcoming American-Japanese computer animated film. It’s the fourth installment of Godzilla Animated Netflix Universe.
Synopsis[]
Several years into the future, Earth was saved, after Haruo made a sacrifice to prevent Ghidorah from coming back and destroying reality. However, a new enemy has awoken Earth, an Elder God, Cthulhu, and he’s about to face off with the King of the Monster. The clash of gods has arrived once again, an evolution arms battle, like what their ancestors did for thousands of years, who will come out on top?

Ken Watanabe as Sasuke Sakaki, a descendant of the now deceased Haruo and Maina. An elder villager in East Asia, who obeyed Godzilla.
Hiroki Hasegawa as Hauro Sakaki the 3rd, the son of Sasuke, named after his ancestor Haruo, due to the similarities he shares with him.

Development []
The film was first announced on November 23, 2020 after Warner Bros. agreed to help produce the film. Fans of both Lovecraft and Godzilla, began to speculate that Cthulhu and Godzilla are gonna have a match up. On December 15, 2020, the film was announced and had a set released date to May 2025. Toho plans, “For Godzilla anime to continue, although in a different formula. This will take place 1,000 years after the third film, and will be darker than the first three and more action packed.”
In January 2022, Michael Grey was announced to be director of the film, who promised to have a “Well talented crew”. It was later confirmed a month later, there will be a winner, not a tie. Being set a 1,000 years later, and set in the United States and Japan. Grey promised, “An older, more intelligent, and much more powerful Godzilla than in the last three films. And we are also gonna have a strong and very powerful Cthulhu.” He later confirms there will be more Godzillas and Cthulhus appearing in the film, making it a Kaiju war.
Writing []
In April 2022, Chris Smith was confirmed to be one of the writing for the film. All companies gained interest of hiring him after the massive successful of one of his Godzilla novels. Months later, Joel Coward was also hired, according to Warner Bros., the crew is far from done and are currently about to write the script. After casting was done, they began writing the script.
Pre-Production[]
In the interview, Michael Grey confirms that there will be a new cast of characters since this takes place 1,000 years after Planet Eater, in North America. One of the first cast members was Chris Pratt, who was reported to be “Interested” being casted for the film. Around three months later, Elizabeth Olsen, John Boyea, and Tom Holland are joining the cast for the film. In August 2022, Keanu Reeves and Jeff Goldblum have agreed to join the cast. As the casting begins to happen more frequently, Scarlett Johansson was casted. First two members for the Japanese cast are Ken Watanabe and Hiroki Hasegawa, on September 22 2022. Casting was announced to be done. And around the same year it’s said that there will be two prequel novels about Godzilla Earth‘s past and how he will fight against a new threat. While Cthulhu’s is about his backstory and how he got to Earth. As of currently the prequel novels are named Godzilla: God of Earth and Cthulhu: The Great Old One.

The film is planned to start streaming on Netflix on May 30, 2025.
Marketing[]
The film was first poster teased in G-Fest in 2022. As of currently, the crew isn’t complete yet and is scheduled to begin animating in early 2024. On September 22, 2022, it was confirmed that a prequel manga of the film was coming out around 2024 of an unknown date. In 2023, another poster was released showing both Godzilla and Cthulhu on both sides, with the tag line saying, “God of Destruction vs God of Madness”. In mid 2024, animation is mostly complete.

A teaser was released on August 7, 2024, with only showing Cthulhu and Godzilla roaring at each other. The first confirmed trailer date is December 2024.

A sequel is expected to come a few years after the film release, according to Michael Grey.
