Godzilla: King of the Monsters is an 2019 upcoming American science fiction monster film directed by Michael Dougherty. It is the sequel to Edwards' 2014 Godzilla and the third installment of the MonsterVerse, which ended up being a success at the box office and for most critics. It expands upon the story started in the first movie and takes place on an uncharted island where giant prehistoric creatures still live. Ken Watanabe reprises his role as Dr. Ichiro Serizawa from the first film, this time as the main character. Sally Hawkins and David Strathairn reprise their roles as Dr. Vivienne Graham and Admiral William Stenz respectively. It will be released on May 31, 2019.
The official plot description is: “In the sequel to Legendary’s Godzilla, Dr. Ichiro Serizawa and the Monarch organization find a mysterious island in the Pacific Ocean where creatures from Godzilla’s era not only originated, but still live on.”
The plot will involve Dr. Serizawa and Dr. Graham finding this mysterious uncharted island, which will essentially be the modern interpretation of "Monster Island" from Destroy All Monsters, however the island will remain unnamed. They will set up a base for the Monarch organization and will have M.U.T.O. faction military officers to protect them.
Since the island consists of many species of giant creatures from Godzilla's era, several monsters from the old movies will be included, and will be named as well. Such monsters that will appear include Mothra, Rodan, Anguirus, and Manda. Each monster will be part of a species, but the one Godzilla fights will be the "top dog" of the species. The Mutos will also appear in the movie, but will have a small, cameo-like appearance and they will not fight Godzilla. Other new kaiju species will be included that Godzilla will not fight.
