As they were in Central Florida prior to the removal, Arthur's ancestors took approximately 20 days to relocate to Oklahoma. The enslaved Blacks were enlisted to labor for Seminoles along the way; they hunted, chopped wood, nursed the sick, washed clothes, prepared the meals, guarded the camps at night, and hiked ahead to remove obstructions from the roads Once in Oklahoma, slaves often toiled on plantation-style farms or were servants in tribal members’ homes. In 1866 the United States government made treaties with the native people in Indian Territory requiring them to emancipate their slaves and adopt the freedmen as citizens. While the tribes did comply to this (with the Chickasaw being the only tribe to not fully adhere), they did not offer them citizenship from their nations, and Arthur's family faced discrimination when trying to acquire citizenship in the Seminole nation.
