ASA logo

ASA is a Portuguese publishing house, whose name is composed of the acronym "Américo da Silva Areal", the name of a Portuguese teacher, writer and businessman, responsible for having founded the publishing house in 1951. On January 7, 2008, with the foundation of the LeYa Group, it became part of this holding, together with the Portuguese publishers Caminho, Gailivro, Nova Gaia and Texto Editora, the Mozambican Ndjira and the Angolan Nzila. It is well known in Portugal for their school textbooks for secondary and primary education. Initially, however, the publisher had devoted itself more to literature (including children's one), poetry, art, architecture, among others. In 2002, the company began releasing comics. It is a reference in publications of Portuguese and foreign literature in the same country. It also has one of the best catalogs in Europe in the field of comics and is the undisputed leader in the Portuguese market. It is quite notable for its constant publication of Franco-Walloon books.

ASA's manga adventure started with the release of some western mangas. Later, in 2010, it started releasing exclusively Japanese manga. In 2012 the publisher tragically sees all its contracts with Shueisha and Kodansha being uniterally broken (Both Shueisha and Kodansha breakings are due to them not being satisfied with the accomplishment of their mangas in the country), which resulted in the quick withdrawal from publishing mangas, temporarily...

In 2018, seeing several Portuguese publishers launching manga, ASA announces new manga releases, which made the publisher embark on the manga market again. After this, ASA has only announced 2 new mangas (1 in 2019 and another in 2021) and despite releasing a new manga volume at least every two months, the publisher it's still at a very slow pace and recovering from the legacy that left in the past attempts.

Unlike its sister, which is nothing more than an editorial seal of Panini Comics, Panini Manga Portugal is an independent publisher of Panini Comics (which in the country is limited to importing Brazilian versions of Marvel comics), and the two only have in common to belong to the same group.

It should be noted that although the group does not have headquarters in Portugal, Panini Manga became the only company in the group to have a headquarters in the country. Its headquarters, located in Sintra, and its 3 publishing and logistics assistance offices, located in Vila Nova de Gaia (Northern part), Portimão (Southern part) and Funchal (Archipelagos), were opened in June 2020. This makes all mangas released by the publisher to be completely edited in Portugal.

O Homem Que Caminha (The Walking Man)
In 2005, Panini launched a collection of graphic novels called “Série Ouro” (Golden Series); the edition was made by Devir and the distribution was made with the newspaper Correio da Manhã (Morning Mail).
