Supergirl (also known as Kara Zor-El) is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by writer Otto Binder and designed by artist Al Plastino. Supergirl first appeared in a story published in Action Comics #252 (May 1959) titled "The Supergirl from Krypton".
Kara Zor-El is the biological cousin of Kal-El (Superman). During the 1980s and the revolution of the Modern Age of Comics, Superman editors believed the character's history had become too convoluted, and desired to re-establish Superman as "The Last Son of Krypton". Supergirl was thus killed during the 1985 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths and retconned out of existence. In the decades following Crisis, several characters unrelated to Superman used the Supergirl alias.
Kara Zor-El re-entered mainstream continuity in 2004 when DC Comics Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Dan DiDio, along with editor Eddie Berganza and comic book writer Jeph Loeb, reintroduced the character in the Superman/Batman storyline "The Supergirl from Krypton". The title paid homage to the original character's 1959 debut. As the current Supergirl, Kara Zor-El stars in her own monthly comic book series. With DC's 2011 relaunch, Kara, like most of the DC Universe, was revamped. DC relaunched the Supergirl comic in August 2016 as part of their DC Rebirth initiative.
In live action, Supergirl appeared in the 1984 film based on her character and was portrayed by Helen Slater. She also appeared in the series Smallville, played by actress Laura Vandervoort. In 2015, the live action Arrowverse series Supergirl debuted on CBS and then moved to The CW after the first season. Supergirl is portrayed by Melissa Benoist on the show and also appears on other Arrowverse shows. Sasha Calle appears as Supergirl in the DC Extended Universe film The Flash (2023).

- Supergirl is a main character in Iago PUC's Justice League/Teen Titans Animated Universe, voiced by Tara Strong. While she is still Superman's cousin in the series, this version is depicted as chronologically younger than him, having been born decades after Krypton's destruction and after Kal-El grew up to become Superman. A member of the Justice League, she made her first appearance in the Justice League: Knights of Rao episode "My Prince", on which she followed her teammates on a mission to stop the dark sorcerer Deimos and his spawns from destroying Warlord's village while trying to cope with her cousin's departure from Earth. She eventually regained her full confidence following an encounter with Brion Markov / Geo-Force, who revealed that Superman was with the Blue Lantern Corps, and would still return to Earth more often. Further more, Kara fell in love with Brion, and the two became a couple as Geo-Force had also earned membership in the Justice League. Supergirl also befriended Brion's younger sister Tara / Terra, and became supportive over her goal to assemble the Knights of Rao, and end Tyranny on Earth.

- The Arrowverse incarnation of Supergirl appears as a main character, with Melissa Benoist reprising her role. In the film, she is one of the many heroes from alternate dimensions who join forces with the main Earth's Justice League to stop Brainiac from ravaging the Multiverse. She also becomes very close friends with that universe's Batgirl, whom she even entrusts the use of the deceased Green Arrow's bow and arrows during the final battle against Brainiac's army.
- The Kara Zor-El from the main Justice League's universe has a silent appearance in one of the mid-credit scenes, on which Superman, having learned of his cousin's existence following his experience with the alternate Supergirl, ends up finding her in her Kryptonian Escape Pod in hyper-sleep while on his work to restore the cities collected by Brainiac.
- Kara Zor-El / Supergirl also makes her full appearance as a main character in Wonder Woman: Tales of Sisterhood, voiced by Mae Whitman. Kara appears as one of the Honorary Amazons recruited by Diana / Wonder Woman in Themyscira, and is featured in a story about her training with Diana in her first days as Supergirl. The film also reveals that she is chronologically younger than Superman, as she is depicted to be at the age of 13, and was born in Argo City (while it was shrunk by Brainiac) decades after Krypton was destroyed. On favor of her decision, Superman allowed her to live her life in Themyscira, where Kara shares a home with her best friend and surrogate sister Lyla Michaels / Harbinger.
- Supergirl is a playable character in Marvel/DC Heroes Unite!, voiced by Tara Strong. She is among the members of the Justice League and the Teen Titans teaming up with the Marvel heroes (the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the New Avengers) and the Rookie hero/heroine. She also befriends Gwen Stacy / Ghost-Spider and the Rookie, whom Supergirl solely refers to as "Super-Newbie".
- Supergirl is a playable character in Lego Teen Titans, voiced by Anais Fairweather. Compared to her previous Lego game appearances, Supergirl now has a major role in the game's main story.
- The DC Super Hero Girls version of Supergirl also appears as a DLC character, available in the "DC Super Hero High" Pack.

- Supergirl appears in Superman: Hero of Steel, voiced by Amanda Leighton.
- Supergirl appears as a main character in DC: Unlimited Rebirth, voiced by Emily Tennant. She is a member of the Teen Titans and is Superman's long lost younger cousin, and is able to change her hair color through a Virtual Reality-inducing Kryptonian gemstone to disguise her identity. This version also has a identical twin sister named Kyra / Karen Danvers, who is the show's version of Power Girl. She also has a strong bond of friendship with Lyla Michaels / Harbinger, with whom Kara is revealed to be romantically involved, although they initially kept that relationship in secret from everyone except for Wonder Woman (who had already witnessed and supported certain Themyscirans forming their own relationships, such as Mala and Alexa), Carol Ferris / Star Sapphire (who admitted awareness after sensing their love for each other), Lois Lane / Swamp Angel, and Lyla's cousin Caitlin Snow / Winter Princess. It eventually took some words of encouragement to convince Kara and Lyla that they had nothing too shocking to hide from their friends and families, to whom they soon come out.

- Supergirl is a DLC playable character in DC vs. Sega, voiced by Jessica McKenna. In her ending, Kara returns home expecting little surprises following her battle with Blackseid. It is until she is met with her adoptive uncle Jonathan and aunt Martha as well as Superman and Lois Lane, who were waiting to deliver her a gift for saving the world. To her surprise and joy, her gift is revealed to be a Chao she could keep as a pet.
- Supergirl returns in the game's sequel comic book tie-in series Aftermath. In Issue #12: "Speak With Your Hearts", she and Starfire spend some time together while exchanging stories about their companions from Sonic the Hedgehog's world; with Kara having named her pet Chao Streaky II and tailored him with a small-sized red cape with the S-Shield. Streaky II also befriends Starfire's companion Wisps, and (while accompanying his master in stopping Blackfire and Reign) reveals to have also assimilated Supergirl's powers.
