Sailor Moon Crystal: FernGully

Sailor Moon Crystal: FernGully is a three-part movie crossover between Sailor Moon Crystal and FernGully movie series.

Plot[]

Part 1[]

The crossover film tells the story of FernGully, a rainforest near Mount Warning, Australia, remains identical to the original film. A curious fairy girl named Crysta saw a part of the world she and her friends (Pips and the Beetle Boys) never seen before beyond FernGully and believes humans dwell on the nearby mountain Mount Warning. But the wise sprite of the forest and Crysta's motherly figure, Magi Lune, says humans are now extinct. In the opening scene, she says that the fairies of FernGully once lived in harmony with humans, but they fled, driven away by the attack of an enemy known as Hexxus, the spirit of destruction and all that is toxic to nature, who emerged from Earth's core while Mount Warning was causing an eruption that destroyed most of the forest, never to return and presumed dead; Hexxus was defeated by the fairies and imprisoned inside a tree. Crysta mentions a black cloud that she saw rising near the mountain, and Magi identifies it as smoke, but nervously dismisses Crysta's speculation that the smoke might be Hexxus, saying "There isn't a force in nature that could release him, and there are no poisons here on which he can feed. Hexxus is trapped for all time." It is implied that Magi shares Crysta's fears, but is afraid to say so openly.

By the time, Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako, Mamoru, Chibiusa, Setsuna, Haruka, Michiru and Hotaru travel to Australian rainforest because Makoto won 7 tickets to Australia. While waiting for their new home to be renovated, Nellie and her younger brother George are sent to a farm in the countryside, much to George's delight and Nellie's disgust. However, the farmhouse and the surrounding area are teeming with magical fey creatures, most of which Nellie cannot see initially because she doesn't believe in faeries. The first the two children properly encounter is a somewhat crotchety and unfriendly hobgoblin named Broom (whom Nellie can see) who is (more or less) secretly looking after the farm. Crysta befriends a mentally unstable yet comical fruit bat named Batty Koda who has been experimented on by humans and now has wires and antennas fused into his head. However, fairies refuse to believe him, except for Crysta until Usagi and her friends and Mamoru enter their world. Pips and the Beetle Boys found a mysterious artifact called the Dark Mirror that had its similarity to a 3D copy machine. The test of the Dark Mirror copies Luna-P and Ami's FinePad and Luna starts worrying what the danger of the Dark Mirror. When Chibiusa looks in the mirror, it scans Chibiusa, creating a monochromatic copy right aside her. Copy Chibiusa aims the Dark Mirror at Usagi and a dark copy of Usagi is created. Usagi dubs her copy "Copy Usagi" and says hi, but the doppelgänger is incredulous that she isn't the original. Usagi and Copy Usagi claim the other to be the copycat, and their argument escalates to a fight until Usagi's friends has to break them apart.

Usagi, her friends and Crysta head to Mount Warning where she finds dead trees all marked with red aerosol paint crosses, which mark them for cutting. Ami looks for the source of the smoke, which turns out to be the exhaust from a huge tree leveler. Crysta finds male humans including one named Zak. Rei senses the tree that Hexxus is imprisoned in. Copy Usagi arrives and reveals that the copy not only was Usagi's physical form copied, but her knowledge as well. Transforming into a dark copy of Sailor Moon (to Usagi's surprise), Black Sailor Moon gets right to attacking her lighter counterpart. Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon and fights her copy and they are too evenly matched. Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako and Chibiusa transform into the Sailor Guardians to help Sailor Moon, causing Black Sailor Moon to flee. The Sailor Guardians see a massive, ancient oak tree, the remains of the original fairy kingdom. As they look around, they approach the old fairy palace, where they find a coconut-shaped crystal which Crysta reveals what Magi was looking for: the Rainforest Crystal, an object of immense power similar to the Silver Crystal and the Golden Crystal that was lost centuries ago. While the Sailor Guardians taken the Rainforest Crystal back to FernGully, Crysta gets pursued by Zak with Chibiusa follow. When Zak is almost crushed by a tree, Crysta accidentally shrinks him to fairy-size and he falls on a tree. He gets stuck on a spiderweb on the tree that's just about to go through a tree shredder. She tries to get him off, but can't when Batty swoops in, grabs them both off of the spider web and blames Crysta for her almost getting killed, because she did not listen to him. Usagi scolds Makoto for putting Crysta in danger.

Zak goes on a wild adventure with Crysta and Batty, nearly getting eaten by Lou a hungry Goanna lizard, and unexpectedly falls in love with Crysta. Ami sets up a portable base and tells Zak to watch the video recording of the Copy Sailor Guardians. Luna and Artemis research the Rainforest Crystal and study images of the black tree that Hexxus is imprisoned in. Everyone agrees with Minako when she announces they will have to meet Magi as soon as possible.

In FernGully, Zak meets Pips, a fairy envious of Zak's relationship with Crysta. Nellie and George arrive in FernGully. Copy Usagi arrives and uses the Dark Mirror to scan the Inner Sailor Guardians present, creating black copies of all of them! Black Sailor Moon vows to replace all of the Sailor Guardians... permanently. The Sailor Guardians battle their copies until Tuxedo Mask and the Outer Sailor Guardians arrive to help them. Sailor Pluto performs her exceptionally strong Dead Scream attack on Copy Sailor Chibi Moon, causing her to disappear into nothingness. Sailor Neptune immobilizes the Copy Sailor Guardians with sound waves using her violin and Sailor Uranus easily takes care of the Copy Inner Sailor Guardians with World Shaking and Black Sailor Moon makes a final rush for the Dark Mirror. But she's too late, as Sailor Saturn prevents her and Sailor Venus grabs the Dark Mirror and tosses it into the sky, allowing Sailor Moon to destroy it with Moon Spiral Heart Attack. With the destruction of the mirror, Copy Sailor Moon vanishes into nothing. The fairies see the Sailor Guardians are the protectors of their world.

Part 2[]

While playing outside, George inadvertently stumbles into a faery ring surrounding a massive tall tree at the heart of FernGully and ends up in the realm of faeries. Nellie is able to bribe Broom with honey cakes in exchange for him showing her how to see the faeries and how to find and enter Faeryland, a neighbor world of FernGully. Broom warns Nellie, Usagi and her friends not to eat or drink anything while they are there, however, Nellie reaches her brother just in time to see George eating a faery cake. The uptight Chudley informs them that the law of the faery realm states that a mortal who consumes even one mouthful of faery food must remain in the realm forever. Nellie and George strongly — and noisily — protest despite Sailor Venus' attempt to calm them down. The commotion attracts the attention of the Faery Prince Albrecht, the ruler of the realm, who offers Nellie and George a chance to escape by setting three tasks for them.

What they do not know (expect Rei) is that the evil brother of the Prince and the minion of Hexxus, the Shapeshifter, and his goblin henchmen, are trying to manipulate the children and the faery citizens (Merrivale, Huccaby, Chudley, and Starcross are the only ones met in the film) to usurp the rulership of the faery realm. The Shapeshifter can steal the throne with ease if he obtains the Orb, a powerful magical sceptre in his brother's possession. In addition, the Prince falls in love with a friend of the children, the pretty human farmhand Brigid, which proves pivotal in an old prophecy that foretells the future for the faery realm. The Sailor Guardians meet Magi Lune and show her the Rainforest Crystal they found. Magi explains to Usagi and her friends what Magi knows about FernGully's enemy Hexxus: An entity of concentrated evil, completely unlike any other creature. He hungers for power and has his eyes set upon the sacred Rainforest Crystal to strengthen his power. He will stop at nothing to destroy FernGully. The original humans who protected FernGully had been driven away by Hexxus and Magi imprisoned Hexxus in a tree. The Shapeshifter was trying to release his master.

Later, Crysta is taking care of three baby animals and demonstrating greater control over nature. She and Pips begin a small contest over who can grow the more impressive plant, while Pips expresses a desire to see more of the outside world. Suddenly, Batty arrives in a panic, warning that human poachers are right behind him. These poachers show up with their dogs and capture the three baby animals. The first rescue attempt while still in FernGully fails, and results in a huge forest fire, destroying a huge part of the forest and injuring Mother Kangaroo. The Sailor Guardians, Pips and the Beetle Boys volunteer to follow the humans to town and rescue the babies, convincing the reluctant Batty to be their guide. The Sailor Guardians, Zak Young, Pips, Batty Koda and the Beetle Boys arrive at a town amusement park. They are so fascinated by the rides, they are reminded by Batty and Sailor Venus to resume their mission.

All this time, the fairies have been healing the rainforest and Crysta finds and helps one of the poachers' dogs (she called him Boof) abandoned and caught in a trap. She takes him on a journey to the town. Meanwhile, Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako, Chibiusa, Pips and the Beetle Boys meet a girl named Budgie, who is hard at practicing for the clown act. Pips flies over to her and introduces himself and his friends. Shocked by the insects, Budgie tries to swat them away, accidentally slapping Rei across the face and hitting Pips in the process. He flies into a pole and Budgie runs over asking if she's hurt him. Pips denies being hurt, but after seeing Pips weak from the journey and can barely stand, gives them shelter in her trailer. Batty has located the poachers' place, but the others ignore him too fascinated by modern human utilities. Bark and Batty go to make a rescue attempt, but Batty is caught.

Budgie tells Pips that she has been working on her clown act for years, but she has never been all that good. Pips tells her that she is trying too hard, and she should just do it. Meanwhile, Zak's superiors, Tony and Ralph, cut down an enchanted baobab tree that Zak had inadvertently painted an X mark on while trying to spray a fly that was buzzing around him. Unfortunately, this turns out to be the tree Hexxus is trapped in, and the cutting down and processing of the tree by the lumbermill-like leveler machine releases him. Determined to get revenge upon the fairies of FernGully (specifically Magi Lune) for imprisoning him, Hexxus gains power from the pollution, specifically the energy and smoke produced by the Leveler, as he can be seen "drinking" from it like a liquid. The Shapeshifter meets Hexxus in person and explains that the Sailor Guardians have been an obstacle. Hexxus knows the Sailor Guardians came to protect FernGully and Faeryland and needs the Rainforest Crystal. He manipulates the lumberjacks and their tree leveler into tearing down the rainforest in the direction of the fairies in three days, thereby destroying the very fabric of their world. He does this under the vocal disguise of their boss. The poachers spot Luna, Artemis and Diana had located their hideout where the babies are and capture them, place them in a sack and a cage. Back at where the babies are, the animals are very scared and fear they will never get back home. Batty overcomes his terror of the situation and manages to reassure them. Then the poachers take all the cages and load them onto a big truck.

At the fair, Budgie goes to a contest stand and wins a stuffed kangaroo, which reminds Ami and Pips of the babies he's supposed to be saving along with the Sailor Guardians. He tells Budgie about them and she offers to help him and Minako out. The Sailor Guardians and the Beetle Boys all reach the old warehouse. Usagi and Minako use the Disguise Pen and the Sailor V Compact to change into a girl scouts in order to sneak in. The poachers drive off, and Budgie jumps off a ledge and lands on the truck. They drive past Budgie's grandfather, and he sees that Budgie is hanging on the truck tarp, and he drives after them. Budgie manages to get inside the car and frees all the birds in the cages. The poachers see Budgie trying to get in the car and are enraged seeing all the birds flying away. One of them climbs out of the truck and tries to get Budgie off. She manages to get away from him, but he unlatches the car she's on and sends her rolling backwards on the road. She ends up with one side of the car dangling off a cliff. When she falls, Batty catches her and manages to lift her all by himself up to the top of the cliff (in spite of her being double his size) allowing Budgie's grandfather to catch them in his net and bring them safely to solid ground.

The group then head by clown car, alongside with the Sailor Guardians, to the ship where the animals are being loaded. Pips undoes the conveyor catch so that the catches land in Budgie's grandfather's car. A struggle for the cages ensues between the poachers and the Sailor Guardians. Boof and Crysta arrive to help and Slasher turns against his former master while Sailor Moon, Sailor Venus and Sailor Chibi Moon rescue Luna, Artemis and Diana. The boat gets away and the fairies use their magic to stop it growing a gigantic tree, where the poachers were heard from no more until they are arrested by the police. Sailor Chibi Moon saves Nugget from drowning. Budgie and her grandfather adopt Slasher and Boof while all the animals and fairies return home.

Part 3[]

Usagi and her friends take Budgie and her grandfather to FernGully. The Shapeshifter and Hexxus plan to usurp the rulership of the faery realm.

With help of Usagi, Nellie and George succeed in bringing Brigid to Faeryland, where she meets and falls in love with the Prince. Later, the children, Usagi and her friends are instrumental in foiling the Shapeshifter's attempt to cause war between Albrecht and the faery princess to whom he was originally betrothed. Once the Shapeshifter is defeated, the princess gives Brigid and Albrecht her blessing, and Usagi, her friends, Crysta, Pips, Zak, Budgie, Nellie and George watch as Brigid is married to Albrecht, and is transformed into a faery. Two tasks down, the children return to the farm, where the faeries have left a fabricated letter to explain Brigid's disappearance. Usagi and her friends go to meet with Setsuna, Haruka, Michiru and Hotaru. Using a DVD of the original FernGully movie, the Inner Sailor Guardians discover that the tree that Hexxus is imprisoned in was cut down by Tony and Ralph and Hexxus manipulated humans to drive the leveler to FernGully. They're find out that Hexxus will enter FernGully by the next morning.

Later, the children bring Brigid to the home of her friend, whose newborn baby is Brigid's godson (making Brigid a real fairy godmother.) However, the Shapeshifter has followed them, and steals the child, leaving a goblin replacement. Brigid must steal the Orb for the Shapeshifter if she wants to rescue the child. Usagi uses Ami's FinePad to examine the stolen Orb. Brigid makes the trade, but is horrified to see the faeries upon her return-now drastically aged, and Albrecht close to death, as the Orb is also the source of the faeries' youth and immortality. Brigid is only unaffected because she has not been a faery long enough to noticeably age. With a little help from Broom, the children and Brigid make a plan. Using a bead, a brooch pin, and a pinch of hobgoblin magic, the group creates a fake Orb. Chibiusa, Nellie and George sneak into a goblin party and successfully swap the Orbs. Brigid returns the real Orb to its rightful place in the palace, saving the faeries' lives and restoring their youth.

The Shapeshifter, unaware that the Orb in his possession is fake, marches into Faeryland, believing his brother and the other faeries to be dead. He is confronted by the Sailor Guardians, who reveal the deception. Albrecht arrives, battles his brother (who transforms into a fire-breathing dragon/mantis-like monster) and ultimately wins with help of Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians. The Shapeshifter and all but one of his henchmen are thrown into prison. The last one evades detection and runs away to warn Hexxus. Nellie and George have completed their three tasks, and, as a reward for saving Faeryland, are allowed to consume as much faery food as they desire, without having to remain in Faeryland or complete another three tasks. Sailor Moon realizes that the Shapeshifter's master was Hexxus.

Up until this point, all the fairies have not had a clue as to what danger awaits them. When the signs of Hexxus's resurrection begin to manifest themselves in poisoned trees and rivers, Sailor Mars senses Hexxus coming. Then, Zak reveals that the humans are not the only ones as the poachers who captured the baby animals, but the lumberjacks who came to cut down trees, and that he was one of them.

Once the truth is revealed the fairies all join forces and fuse their powers together, creating a protective tree cage. Magi sacrifices herself to give the fairies a chance (by giving her power to the fairies and even Zak), and she tells Crysta to remember everything she's learned. It is up to Sailor Moon, the Sailor Guardians, Crysta and the other fairies to defeat Hexxus. The fairies mount an attempt to defend their homes, but Sailor Moon, knowing their fight is hopeless, leads the Sailor Guardians to protect the fairies. Zak convinces Batty to aid him in helping Sailor Mercury and stopping the leveler before it destroys the fairies. When Zak makes his presence known to Tony and Ralph, Hexxus takes over the machine and begins to wildly destroy the forest. Sailor Mercury and Zak turn off the leveler, causing Hexxus to lose all the energy he was gaining from it and disappear, but he soon rips out of the machine as a giant demonic skeleton creature made of oil that breathes fire.

Sailor Moon transforms into Super Sailor Moon using the Holy Grail and the Sailor Guardians battle Hexxus. Crysta seemingly sacrifices herself like Magi did to help Sailor Moon by allowing Hexxus to devour her in one bite, and uses her powers from inside him to grow a seed she had with her to again imprison Hexxus (together with the leveler) inside a new tree with help from the fairies led by Pips, thereby imprisoning him again. However, she emerges, unharmed and alive, from a flower soon after the fight, having survived her ordeal and successfully succeeded Magi as a magical fairy. Crysta gives Zak a seed, begging him to remember everything that has transpired and she forlornly restores him to his human size. Sailor Moon gives him and Budgie a medals looks like her Transformation Brooch and Sailor Jupiter captures the Shapeshifter's last henchman. Sailor Pluto, Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Saturn set off to try to stop the destruction of the rainforests. Meanwhile, Crysta takes Magi's place after learning finally how to control her powers. Remembering the seed in his hand, Zak promises to remember his adventure, and buries the seed in the soil before telling Tony and Ralph that things need to change as they leave the forest behind. The seed sprouts new growth for FernGully as Crysta playfully chases Pips with Batty following. Sailor Moon uses her Spiral Heart Moon Rod to restore all the rainforests.

During the credits, the following photos are shown: the children deciding to extend their stay at the farm, Ami removes the wire from Batty, Crysta grows four baby trees planted by Setsuna, Haruka, Michiru and Hotaru, Usagi and her friends made a safe for the Rainforest Crystal disguised as a celestial globe, Pips and the Beetle Boys fly to the camping site to see Minako, Usagi and her friends visit a town amusement park to see Zak and Budgie, Tony and Ralph are part of the carnival's attractions, Zak helps Budgie practice for the clown act and Ami shows a pictures of their adventures to Usagi's friends.
