Disney's Live Action Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a American live action musical fantasy drama film directed by David Fincher, produced by Guillermo Del Toro and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The majority of it is based on the 1996 Disney animated film, the 1999 - 2002 Berlin Disney stage musical and the 2013 King's Academy Florida Disney stage musical, with some elements of the 2014 - 2015 American stage musical and Victor Hugo's Novel. The screenplay was written by James Lapine (who wrote the 1999 - 2002 Berlin stage musical and the 2013 King's Academy Florida Disney stage musical). The film stars Christy Carlson Romano as Esmeralda, Nicholas Hoult as Quasimodo, Armie Hammer as Captain Phoebus Gringoire, Kyla Pratt as Djali, Sacha Baron Cohen as Clopin, Bryan Cranston as Victor, Jason Alexander reprising his role as Hugo, Jon Stewart as Charles, Terence Stamp as The Archdeacon and Alan Rickman as the evil Judge Claude Frollo in his final role. Given it's darker than usual tone, it is the first live action Disney remake to be rated PG-13.

The film received positive reviews, with praise going to the script, the music, the costume design, and the performances of Romano, Hoult and Rickman. It grossed over $995.9 million worldwide on a $245 million budget.

Plot[]

The film opens in 1482 Paris and are introduced to the film's narrator Clopin (Lin-Manuel Miranda) telling the story of the bellringer of Notre Dame. The story flashes back to 1462 with four gypsies sneaking into Paris but are ambushed by a squadron of soldiers working for Judge Claude Frollo (Sean Harris), the minister of justice and de facto ruler of Paris. A gypsy woman named Gudule (Salma Hayek) is suspected of stealing stolen goods. Gudule flees with her baby and Frollo's Soldiers hunt her down. She makes it to the Notre Dame cathedral claiming sanctuary. Judge Frollo's soldiers catch up to her. Gudule gets into a struggle the soldiers while Frollo catches up to her and gets into a struggle with the woman. Judge Frollo kicks Gudule to the ground. Gudule coughs out blood and dies. The judge discovers that the "stolen goods" is a deformed baby and attempts to drown the baby, until the Archdeacon (Stellan Skarsgård) stops the minister from murdering the baby. Judge Frollo tells the Archdeacon the baby is "an unholy demon that needs to be sent back to hell where it belongs". The Archdeacon accuses him of murdering an innocent woman. Frollo replies that he is justified and the baby cannot have a life. The Archdeaon replies to Judge Frollo that he lie to himself all he wants but he cannot hide his crime from the eyes of god. Fearing for his soul and to atone for his sin, Frollo reluctantly agrees to raise the deformed child in the Cathedral's bell tower as his son, naming him Quasimodo (meaning half-formed). He notes that someday the child may have use for him. We than cut back to 1482 and cuts back to Clopin and asks the audience what makes a monster and what makes a man. (Bells of Notre Dame).

Twenty years later, Quasimodo (Cameron Monaghan) has developed into a kind yet isolated young man with three imaginary Gargoyles, Victor (George Clooney), Hugo (Jack Black), and Laverne (Debra Messing), as his only friends, constantly told by Judge Frollo that he is a monster who would be rejected by the uncaring outside world (Out There Part I). Frollo tells Quasimodo, how in his past he was a once priest than became a Judge to "purge the world of vice and sin" and how he should be thankful for his sanctuary (Sanctuary I). Quasimodo apologizes to his master. Frollo reminds him that the cathedral is his sanctuary. Quasimodo reflects on his solitary life and decides to sneak out of the cathedral despite Frollo's warnings (Out There Part II).

A young soldier, Captain Phoebus Gringoire (Liam Hemsworth) on his way to the palace. We are then introduced to two beautiful Gypsy women, Esmeralda (Raquel Castro) and Djali (Raquel Castro). Esmeralda in particular catches the hearts of many men. The two gypsies are distracted and run into two guards. Lietuenant Jacques Charmoule (Luke Evans) and Sergeant Tristan Coppenole (Michael Fassbender). Jacques and Tristan harass the two gypsies. Esmeralda and Djali kick them in the groin and escape. Phoebus interrupts the two guards and asks them a way to the palace of justice. Phoebus than heads back to the palace of Justice and reflects on the trauma of the war (Rest And Recreation Part I). Phoebus meets Judge Frollo and is appointed to the Captain of the guard. Frollo is impressed with his record and expects nothing but the best from Phoebus. The judge tells him that his previous Captain of the Guard (Sean Bean) was a dissapointment to him. Frollo's jailer tortures the previous Captain of The Guard to his death, which disturbs Phoebus. Judge Frollo discusses with Phoebus with their "mission" to rid the world of gypsies" and how they must be stopped. Frollo emphasies how important it is to stick to their mission (Rest And Recreation Part II). They head off to the Festival of Fools.

Quasimodo attends the Feastival of Fools, and is confused and curious at the same time. He accidentally trips into Esmeralda's dressing room. Esmeralda helps Quasimdo and escorts him out of her dressing room. She kindly reminds him to next time to be more careful and compliments him on his "mask" (not knowing that it is his acutal face). Judge Frollo and Captain Gringoire arrive at the festival and Clopin introduces Esmeralda to the crowd (Topsy Tuvry Part I). Esmeralda appears in a red dress dancing with catching the hearts of Phoebus, Quasimodo and even Frollo (Rhythm of The Tambourine). Esmeralda continues to dance erotically and heads to Judge Frollo and teases him and gives him her handkerchief (Esmeralda's Dance). Esmeralda changes back into her normal dress, with her and Djali encouraging Quasimodo to "join the competion". They attempt to take off his mask until they realize that it's his face. The public is surprised and Frollo is shocked that Quasimodo decided to disobey him. Clopin calms the public down and Quasimodo is crowned the King of Fools and is celebrated by the crowd (Topsy Turvy Part II).

Judge Frollo is furious that Quasimodo is being celebrated and is concerned that Quasimodo may catch onto his lies. The judge orders Jacques and Tristan to throw Rocks at Quasimodo and encourages the crowd to continue to torture Quasimodo. The hunchback begs his master to help him. The Judge turns away as punishment for disobeying him. Phoebus requests permission to stop the cruelty. Frollo tells him that a lesson needs to be learned. Esmeralda decides to free Quasimodo, but Djali tries to talk her out of it. Esmeralda defies Djali and decides to comfort Quasimodo and apologizes to him. Esmeralda give him water to drink. Judge Frollo demands Esmeralda to get off the pillory. Esmeralda openly defies the Judge and frees Quasimodo. She calls out Frollo for his lies and hypocrisy and throws the crown at Frollo and his guards. Judge Frollo orders Captain Gringoire to arrest the gypsy girl. Esmeralda and Djali use Witchcraft and escape Frollo and his goons. Judge Frollo scolds Quasimodo for disobeying him and lies to him about the world being cruel and wicked and commands him to go back to "his sanctuary" with Esmeralda and Djali eavesdropping on them feeling sorry for the Hunchback (Sanctuary II).

Esmeralda and Djali sneak into the Notre Dame cathedral. Djali scolds Esmeralda for "not minding her own business". Esmeralda fires backs at her by saying she couldn't stand by there and let Quasimodo be tortured. She explains to her that she's seen nothing but cruelty (Cruelty and Heartlessness). Captain Phoebus Gringoire pursues them and gets into a flirtatious fight with Esmeralda. Esmeralda beats the Captain fairly easily. Djali gloats by claiming "he got his ass kicked by a woman". Phoebus tries to introduce himself and assures the two gypsies that he is not out to arrest them. He also reminds them that he can't arrest because they have sanctuary. Esmeralda and Djali appreciate the Gringoire is nothing like the other soldiers. Judge Frollo and his guards enter the church and attempt to arrest the gypsies. Phoebus tells Frollo that he can't arrest them because they claimed sanctuary. The Archdeacon stops the Judge from defying the laws of sanctuary. The soldiers exit the cathedral and Frollo pretends to leave. Judge Frollo sneaks up on Esmeralda and grabs her butt and sniffs her hair. Esmeralda breaks free and punches Frollo in the mouth, causing the Judge to cough out blood. Frollo wipes the blood off his mouth. Frollo walks out of the sanctuary trapping Esmeralda inside the cathedral. By having her arrested if she decides to leave. Esmeralda and Djali wonder why "they treat" people who are different and The Archdeacon encourages them to ask god to help. Esmeralda gives a prayer to help her people and outcasts a like to be treated as equals (God Help The Outcasts).

Esmeralda notices Quasimodo and follows him. Djali catches up to them. They enter Quasimodo's room and are impressed with decorations. Esmeralda apologizes to him for allowing him to be tortured at the festival. Quasimodo gives Esmeralda and Djali a tour of his home and show them the top of the Bell Tower. The gypsies are in awe at the view of Paris, The Gargoyles try to convince Quasimodo to express his feelings toward Esmeralda (Top of The World). Quasimodo helps the two gypsies escape the cathedral. Esmeralda thanks him gives a kiss on the cheek.

Quasimodo heads back to the Cathedral and encounters Captain Phoebus and is wonder where Esmeralda went. Given that Gringoire is a soldier, he believes he is there to arrest Esmeralda and Qausimodo attacks him. He than realizes that Phoebus only trapped in her the cathedral in order to save her. Gringoire tells the The Hunchback that Esmeralda is lucky to have a friend like you. Quasimodo than begins to question if Frollo is lying to him about the world being cruel, givent that things were going fine until the soldiers started the torture at the festival and that Esmeralda, Djali and Phoebus showed him kindness. The Gargoyles congratulate him for befriend him and try to tell him that Esmeralda has romantic feelings for him (A Guy Like You). Judge Frollo is riding on his horse heading his way back to the palace of justice and hears whispering voices saying Esmeralda coming from an abandoned Tavern. Frollo investigates the abandoned tavern. The Judge sees ghost like hallucinations of Esmeralda flirting with him. One of them trips Frollo and steps on his head. Judge Frollo attempts to get the gypsy off of him but realizes the hallucinations have ghost like abilities. Frollo gets up and puts his judge hat back on and than draws his sword. The Esmeralda hallucinations to offer him wine and torture and seduce the Judge, causing Frollo slowly descending into lustful feelings for Esmeralda (The Tavern Song (Thai Mol Pyias)).

Quasimodo feels confidant and idolizes Esmeralda. He begins to grow feelings for Esmeralda and views her as nothing but an angel (Heaven's Light). Judge Frollo himself begins to realize his lustful feelings for Esmeralda and wishes to be free of them to escape eternal damnation with ghost like Esmeralda hallucinations seducing him (Hellfire). He soon learns of Esmeralda's escape and declares martial art and instigates a vicious manhunt for her, which involves burning down countless houses in his path.

The Judge orders Phoebus to burn down the miller's house. They all of a sudden hear the voice of Esmeralda. Phoebus defies Judge Frollo. Frollo appoints Lietuenant Jacques as the new Captain and orders Gringoire executed for treason. Phoebus than fights the guards and Esmeralda helps him escape. Quasimodo sees the fire and smoke throughout the city and worries for Esmeralda. Djali is searching throughout burning Paris searching for Esmeralda. Frollo begins to have flashbacks of the Esmeralda hallucinations and gets back on his horse. Phoebus tries to escape, an arrow hits him and falls into the water. Esmeralda and Phoebus keep up with Djali and escape into the burning city of Paris (Esmeralda).

Judge Frollo continues his ruthless manhunt for Esmeralda. Innocent Parisians and gypsies alike are being killed and tortured left and right. Esmeralda, Djali and Phoebus head to the Notre Dame cathedral for sanctuary. Frollo beheads an innocent person and gets back on his horse (City Under Siege).

Quasimodo watches the burning of Paris with his three imaginary Gargoyle friends concerned for Esmeralda's safety. Victor, Hugo and Charles try his best their best to assure him that Esmeralda will be fine and that he has nothing to worry about. Judge Frollo, Captain Jacques and Lietuenant Tristan are still on searching for Esmeralda. Frollo suspects that Quasimodo helped Esmeralda escaped from the cathedral.

Esmeralda returns to the cathedral and Quasimodo is glad to see her safe. Esmeralda and Djali ask him to hide Phoebus. Quasimodo agrees. Esmeralda tries to heal Gringoire from his injuries. Phoebus thanks Esmeralda for saving him and the two kiss. Quasimodo notices Esmeralda kissing Gringoire and this breaks Quasimodo's heart (Heaven's Light Reprise). Djali sees Judge Frollo and his soldiers on his way back to the cathedral. Djali warns them that Frollo is on his way. Quasimodo hides Phoebus and escorts the gypsies out of the cathedral.

Judge Frollo arrives back to Quasimodo's home and shows him fake kindness. Frollo discovers that Quasimodo helped Esmeralda escaped and flips out at him. The Judge gives the Hunchback a fake apology and blames Esmeralda for "seducing" him and tells him that he knows where the court of miracles is and that he will attack at dawn with 1,000 men. Gringoire gets up and tells Quasimodo that they have to find The Court of Miracles before Judge Frollo gets there. Quasimodo refuses to go. Phoebus tries to talk Quasimodo into coming by reminding him that she saved him from the festival, and saved Phoebus from dying and that they owe it to her. Quasimodo replies that Frollo is his master and that he'll only make things worse. Phoebus walks outside. The Gargoyles give Quasimodo a disappointed look. He tells them that Esmeralda has found her "knight and shining armor" and that it's pointless to save her. Quasimodo looks as the map Esmeralda gave to him and think about what Phoebus told him. Quasimodo decides to help Gringoire and they use the map to locate The Court of Miracles. Judge Frollo and his soldiers are still hunting down Esmeralda, Quasimodo and Phoebus Luckily sneak past them (City Under Siege Reprise).

Quasimodo and Gringoire enter the catacombs of Paris, where they notice skeletons of deceased people. They are ambushed by Clopin and the gypsies. They tie Quasimodo and Phoebus and sentence them to hang (The Court of Miracles). Luckily Esmeralda and Djali save them from nearly being killed. Phoebus tells them that Judge Frollo knows where they're located and will attack at dawn. Esmeralda and Djali thank Gringoire and Quasimodo for coming to warn them. Out of nowhere Frollo and his soldiers, arrest Esmeralda, Djali and Phoebus and orders them to keep Quasimodo chained at the Bell Tower. Quasimodo his chained at the bell tower with his three Gargoyle friends. They try to encourage him to break free and save Esmeralda. Quasimodo begins to lose faith in humanity and wishes he were made of stone (Made of Stone). Esmeralda and Djali are in their prison cell. Djali is shocked and devastated the Esmeralda is giving up and is willing to die a firey death. Djali leans on Esmeralda and cries on her. Esmeralda tries to comfort her and tells her that the world will become a better place someday (Someday).

Esmeralda is being tied to a stake and is sentenced to be burned at the stake outside the square of Notre Dame. The Archdeacon tries to stop Esmeralda's execution, but his halted by Frollo's soldiers. Judge Frollo offers Esmeralda to chose him or the fire. Esmeralda spits in Frollo's face and prepares to burn her at the stake. Quasimodo grabs a rope and rescues Esmeralda, and yells sanctuary. Minister Frollo orders his guards to storm the Cathedral. Quasimodo carries Esmeralda's body and lays her down on a bed. Phoebus and Djali break free and rallies the Parisans and Gypsies to fight back. The battle between the resitance and Frollo's army ensues. Quasimodo fights of Frollo's guards. He pushes Captain Jacques and Lietuenant Tristan off of the bell tower causing them to fall to their deaths. Quasimodo pours hot molten lead throught the rough tops killing countless soliders and nearly killing Minsiter Frollo.

Judge Frollo manages to break into the cathedral. The Archdeacon tries to stop the Judge from entering the cathedral, but the Minister pushes the Archdeacon to the ground and locks the door behind him. Quasimodo goes to tell Esmeralda the good news. He notices that she hasn't been awake believes Esmeralda to be dead and mourns her apparent death. Frollo attempts to stab Quasimodo with his dagger, than Quasimodo pushes him to the ground. Quasimodo calls out Frollo for lying to him for twenty years. Esmeralda wakes up and revealed to be alive. Frollo is extremely pissed off and Quasimodo rushes to her defense and fight between Quasimodo and Frollo begins. Frollo taunts Quasi revealing that he killed his gypsy mother (Gudule) and Quasimodo becomes enraged and brutally beats up Frollo and stangles him nearly killing Frollo. Frollo grabs his dagger and slahes Quasi's chest and arm. Frollo snarls and wipes the blood off of his mouth and slashes his dagger at Quasimodo. Quasimodo jumps on the ledge on the ledge of the Cathedral. Frollo uses his cloak to blind him. Judge Frollo and Quasimodo both lose their balance. Esmeralda rushes to save Quasimodo and jumps on the ledge of the cathedral and grabs Quasi's hand. Frollo lands on a flat Gargoyle statue. Minister Frollo, hears the statues of Notre Dame talking to him and yells back at them. The Minster of Justice, takes off his cross necklace to show how much he's sacrificed and his soldier of god. The wind blows the cross necklace out of his hand. Frollo climbs back on the ledge where Esmeralda is standing and attempts to kill Quasimodo with his sword. Esmeralda (in order to protect Quasimodo) kicks Judge Frollo causing him to fall to his death, landing on the ground and coughs blood out of his mouth with spirit going to hell and dies (The Wicked Shall Not Go Unpunished). Esmeralda rescues Quasimodo. Djali meets up with and helps Esmeralda heal Quasi's scars. They meet up with Phoebus and The Archdeacon. Esmeralda, Phoebus, Quasimodo and Djali are seen as heroes for ending Frollo's tyranny (Someday Reprise). Clopin than comes back to remind the audience what makes a "monster and what makes a man" (Bells of Notre Dame Reprise).

Alternate Ending[]

Judge Frollo manages to break into the cathedral. The Archdeacon tries to stop the Judge from entering the cathedral, but the Minister pushes the Archdeacon to the ground and locks the door behind him. Quasimodo goes to tell Esmeralda the good news. He notices that she hasn't been awake believes Esmeralda to be dead and mourns her apparent death. Judge Frollo enters the room and pretends to comfort him. Frollo pulls out his dagger stabs Quasimodo in the back. Esmeralda regains consciousness grabs her dagger and stabs Judge Frollo in the heart. Frollo's body is about to fall on Esmeralda. Esmeralda leans back against the wall and kicks Frollo's weak body to the ground and Frollo dies (The Wicked Shall Not Go Unpunished). Djali arrives to meet up with Esmeralda and Quasimodo. Djali is shocked to see Frollo's corpse on the ground. Esmeralda and Djali attempt to heal Quasimodo. Quasimodo wakes up for a brief moment and thanks Esmeralda for and will never forget her in heaven. Quasimodo dies in Esmeralda's arms. Esmeralda feels guilty and not only feels responsible for Quasimodo's death but also feels resposible for the countless people that died during Frollo's manhunt for Esmeralda. Citizens are cheering at first because Judge Frollo died. Then Esmeralda carries Quasimodo's corpse with Djali at her side. Phoebus, The Archdeacon, Parisians and the Gypsies are heartbroken to see Quasimodo dead. A funeral is held for Quasimodo and he becomes martyr (The World Is Cruel). Quasi's spirit goes to heaven and is reunited with his gypsy mother Gudule and his three imaginary Gargoyle friends. The actions of Esmeralda, Gringoire and Djali inspire the people of Paris to change Society for the better (Someday Reprise). Clopin than comes back to remind the audience what makes a "monster and what makes a man" (Bells of Notre Dame Reprise).

Characters/Cast[]

Becky G as Esmeralda. The Film's Main Female Protagonist. A beautiful gypsy woman, in her mid 20s to early 30s. She's a talented dancer, intelligent, sassy, outspoken, brave and kind. She is also very skilled in martial arts. Esmeralda has long wavy black hair, with a purple ribbon. She wears a white top with a teal bodice with gold stripes, with a purple sarong with a white petticoat with a black knife belt. She wears a golden hoop earing on her left ear, wears a golden bangle on her left wrist and anklet on both her right hand and right ankle. She is barefoot the entire movie and wears red nail polish on bother finger and toenails. She also wears red lipstick. She later gets together with Phoebus Gringoire.

Cameron Monaghan as Quasimodo. The Film's Main Male Protagonist. A deformed twenty year old hunchback. Despite his deformaties, he is kind, naieve, gentle and is very loyal to his friends. Despite his naviety, Quasimodo is very smart and quickwitted and is able catch on to Judge Frollo's lies. He wears a white longsleeve shirt, with a green short sleeve tunic over it, with brown tights and teal boots. He is eventually saved by Esmeralda and is accepted as hero in society. It is also left ambigious that Quasimodo and Djali become a couple at the end of the movie.

Liam Hemsworth as Phoebus Gringoire. The Film's Secondary Male Protagonist. A handsome soldier in his mid 20s to early 30s. He has arrived to Paris after four years in the wars and works for Minister Frollo. He does not always approve of Frollo's methods and eventually turns on Frollo. He no longer is Captain of the guard and becomes a fugitive. Phoebus also falls in love Esmeralda. He is also a very good friend to Quasimodo. Despite working for Judge Frollo, he is very kind, honorable and not afraid to do what's morally right with a smart alec sense of humor. Phoebus has short blonde hair with a beard and wears with shiny silver armor over a white long sleeve shirt, with dark brown gloves, and black boots. After Esmeralda saves Phoebus from drowning, he simply wears a white shirt.

Raquel Castro as Djali. The Film's Secondary Female Protagonist and Esmeralda's gypsy sidekick. Like Esmeralda, she is a beautiful gypsy woman, in her mid 20s to early 30s. She's a talented dancer, intelligent, sassy, outspoken, brave and kind. She is also very skilled in martial arts. However she is a bit more cautious than Esmeralda and ocasionally gets into arguments with her. Despite her disagreements with Esmeralda, she is still very loyal and kind to her. Djali has long wavy black hair, with a yellow ribbon. She wears a white top with a dark red bodice with gold stripes, with a green sarong with a white petticoat with a black knife belt. She wears a golden hoop earing on her left ear, wears a golden bangle on her left wrist and anklet on both her right hand and right ankle. She is barefoot the entire movie and wears red nail polish on bother finger and toenails. She also wears red lipstick.

Sean Harris as Judge Claude Frollo. The Film's Main Antagonist. A ruthless powerful Judge, Paris's Minister of Justice and Defacto Ruler of Paris and a former Priest of Notre Dame, who became a Judge to rid Paris of the gypsy population. He is also the murderer of Gudule, Quasimodo's gypsy mother and the archenemy of Esmeralda. Claude Frollo is a religious fanatic, biogted, vindictive, sociopathic, narcissistic, egotistical, manipulative and a pathological liar. Frollo is also pure evil and has no redeeming qualites. Frollo also lies to the Hunchback by claiming his mother abandoned him and that he never be acepted into society. Claude Frollo mentions that he has a younger brother named Jehan. Claude Frollo has short slicked back hair and wears a long sleve purple tunic with black pants and black boots , with black long regal judge robes with purple sleeves with black/purple chest armor along with black shoulder pads with with red stripes. He also wears a golden cross necklace and black sword/knife belt. He often wears a black/purple/red striped tricorn hat with a red stash and wears rings on his fingers. He is eventually killed by Esmeralda towards the end of the movie, in order to save Quasimodo. Frollo's spirit goes to hell after he falls to his death. This also last performance given by Alan Rickman and was released after his death. The ends credits say in loving memory of Alan Rickman.

Luke Evans as Lietuenant/Later Captain Jacques Charmoule. The Film's Secondary Antagonist. One of Frollo's most loyal soliders. Even though he questions Frollo's methods about breaking the laws of sanctuary, he is still very loyal to Frollo. His soldier outfit is red and black with black boots and a shiny silver helment. He is eventually killed by Quasimodo during the final battle.

Michael Fassbender as Sergeant/Later Lietuenant Tristan Coppenole. He works under Jacques and is very loyal to Frollo as well. His soldier outfit is red and black with black boots and a shiny silver helment. He is also killed by Quasimodo during the final battle.

Lin-Manuel Miranda as Clopin. The Film's Narrator. His the king of gypsies. He is jovial and energetic. He wears a brownish orangish long sleeve tunic, with dark brown pants and wears with orange hat with blue and orange feathers.

George Clooney as Victor, Jack Black as Hugo and Glen Close as Charles. The Film's Comic Relief. Due to Quasimoodo's lonielness and are Quasimoodo's three imaginary Gargoyle friends. Their humor is dry and sarcastic. They help Quasimodo to get outside the bell tower.

Stellan Skarsgård as The Archdeacon. The Film's Supporting Protagonist. The Archdeacon and priest of The Notre Dame Cathedral. Like Judge Frollo, they both worship god and are religious. Unlike Frollo, he is not a fanatic and abhores Frollo's bigotry and calls him out on his lies and tries his best to hold him accountable. He is wise, kind and caring. He wears a long sleeve white tunic with black pants and black boots. He also wears a long white priest robe with a red/gold scarf and red yamika. He also wears the exact same golden cross necklace as Judge Frollo. He is the one who actually saved Quasimodo's life.

Differences Between The 1996 Disney Film[]

The original was rated PG. The remake is rated PG-13 and is much darker.

Quasimodo's' mother murdered by Judge Frollo is given the name Gudule. The death of Quasimodo's mother far more graphic.

Quasimodo's mother was chased by soldiers and later killed by Judge Frollo. Judge Frollo wears a a golden cross necklace as symbolism. This did not appear in the 1996 animated film.

Claude Frollo's backstory is added of him once being a priest of Notre Dame, than became a Judge and Minister of Justice to rid Paris of gypsies. Frollo has a younger brother named Jehan, but is mentioned only.

Djali is a human gypsy sidekick, instead of a Esmeralda's pet goat.

The Gargoyles (Victor, Hugo And Charles) humor is more dry and sarcastic and less flamboyant and aren't as comical. They are also firmly established in Quasimodo's imagination.

The female Gargoyle Laverne in the 1996 animated film is replaced with a male Gargoyle named Charles.

The song A Guy Like You isn't flashy and is less over the top and the lyrics are altered. It is also used before Heaven's Light.

The song Hellfire is even darker than the original. Including ghost like hallucinations of Esmeralda seducing Judge Frollo.

Phoebus has Gringoire as his last name. Phoebus wears silver armor instead of gold armor. Phoebus also sings.

Frollo's Soldiers and Parisians throw rocks at Quasimodo instead of fruit.

Esmeralda gives Quasimodo water before she sets him free.

Emseralda Kills Judge Frollo in order to save Quasimodo. Esmeralda kicks Judge Frollo, causing him to fall to his death with Frollo coughing up blood once he lands on the ground with his soul going to hell and finally dies.

Differences Between The Victor Hugo Novel[]

Quasimodo is deaf and isn't as smart as he is in the movie. Quasimodo also speech impediment.

Esmeralda is of the age of 16 and is not a gypsy and the daughter of a french prostitute. Esmeralda is naive and sweet and is not the sassy confidant character in the film.

Djali is Esmeralda's pet goat instead of a human gypsy sidekick of Esmeralda.

The Archdeacon never existed in the novel, given that Claude Frollo was the Archdeacon himself.

Phoebus in the book was an antagonist and was a womanizer. Phoebus is a combination between Phoebus in the book and Pierre Gringoire. Going as far making Gringoire Phoebus's last name.

Claude Frollo in the book was a priest and the Archdeacon of Notre Dame and never became a Judge nor the Minister of Justice. Claude Frollo in the book was a sympathetic villain and actually protected Quasimodo rather than lying to him like the film. Frollo only becomes evil when Esmeralda enters the story. Frollo was racist towards gypsies but not as extreme as he was in the movie.

Gudule in the book was named Sister Gudule rather than simply Gudule. She was not a gypsy and was a recluse. Gudule was Esmeralda's mother rather than Quasimodo's mom. Like the film, Gudule tried her best protect her child and dies the exact same way. However unlike the film, Frollo did not murder her.

Esmeralda is sentenced to be hanged rather than being burned at the stake.

Claude Frollo successfully has Esmeralda killed in the book. In the movie he fails. Ironically in the film Claude Frollo is killed by Esmeralda.

In the book, Quasimodo killed Frollo by throwing him off the Bell Tower after the death of Esmeralda. In both endings of the movie, Esmeralda killed Frollo. In the movie, Esmeralda kicked Frollo off the Bell Tower in order to save Quasimodo.

Esmeralda's mother (The original Gudule), Pierre Gringoire, Fleur-De Lys and Jehan Frollo do not appear in the film. Jehan Frollo and Fleur-de-Lys are mentioned only. Fleur-de-Lys is mentioned during the song Esmeralda.

Jacques Charmoule is a friend of Claude Frollo and was in charge of torturing prisoners. In the movie changed into a Solider for Frollo and replaces Phoebus Gringoire and a substitute for Brutish Guard in the 1996 Disney fillm.

Tristan Coppneole is a substitute for Oafish Guard in the 1996 Disney film.

This is the first live action Disney remake to receive a PG-13 rating due to the dark and gritty/gothic tone.

David Fincher was not the first person considered to direct. Tim Burton, Stephen Spielberg and Guillmero Del Toro were considered to direct. Guillmero Delo Toro eventually became the film's producer.

Samantha Banks, Alisa Reyes, Kate Bekcinsale, Jessica Biel, Rosario Dawson and Zazie Baetz were considered to play Esmeralda. The role went to Christy Carlson Romano.

Kyla Pratt who plays Djali was at one point considered to play Esmeralda.

Raven Symone was considered for both the role of Esmeralda and Djali.

Daniel Radcliffe, Eddie Redemaye, Josh Gad, and Leondardo DiCaprio were considered for the role of Quasimodo. The role went to Nichola Hoult

The Gargoyles named Victor and Hugo are named after the author of the original, novel Victor Hugo and Charles is named after Charles Laughton who played Quasimodo in the 1939 adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Christy Carlson Romano who played Esmeralda, is known for doing the voice of Kim Possible in the series Kim Possible and Kyle Pratt who played Djali is known for doing the voice of Penny Proud in the series The Proud Family.

Many fans who didn't like The Gargoyle in the original, praise the way the Gargoyles were portrayed.

Majority of fans prefer the happy ending over the sad ending. Even fans of Victor Hugo's novel feel the happy ending is superior and are glad that it was used as the official ending. The sad ending is used as the alternate ending and isn't cannon.

Esmeralda was originally going to kill Judge Frollo in the original 1996 animated film. The filmmakers believed that having Esmeralda kill Frollo would be appropriate for the PG-13 rating. This idea was used for the the official and alternate ending.

The alternate ending was an ending that was considered for the 1996 animated film.

Judge Frollo being killed by Esmeralda is symbolic as god's way of punishing him for his crime and sins and for murdering Gudule, Quasimodo's mother in both the happy and sad ending as well as punishment for murdering Quasimodo in the sad ending. In the happy ending, Esmeralda kicked Judge Frollo off the cathedral causing him to fall to his death and coughing out blood, parallels how Judge Frollo kicked Gudule to the ground, with Gudule coughing out blood out of her mouth. In the sad ending, Esmeralda stabing Judge Frollo in the heart coughing blood out of his mouth parallels Gudule coughing blood out of her mouth. Esmeralda kicked Frollo's corpse to the ground (in order to prevent it from falling on her) parallels how Judge Frollo kicked Gudule to the ground. Judge Frollo killed a gypsy, his punishment from god is that he would be killed by a gypsy for his crimes and sins.

Frollo loses his cross necklace in both endings. That is also part of god's way of punishing Frollo. In the happy ending, the wind blows it out of his hand, and in the sad ending when Esmeralda stabs Frollo in the heart, his cross necklace flies off of him. This symbolizes that his not qualified to be a soldier of god.

Quasimodo's dying in Esmeralda's arm in the sad ending/alternate ending is very similar to how Darth Vader died in Luke's arms in Return of The Jedi.

Reception[]

The film has received generally positive reviews, with critics mostly praising the faithfulness to the animated film and elements of the stage adaptation, performances (with Hoult, Romano, and Rickman being singled out for praise), visuals, settings, costume design and songs. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film as an approval rating of 94%. The site's critical consensus reads, "From the award-worthy performances by Romano, Hoult, and Rickman, to soaring songs, intricate costume and production design, and a more than solid script, The Hunchback of Notre Dame keeps the nostalgia of the animated film, the dark, Gothic themes of Hugo's novel, and a few songs from the stage versions."

The film also recieved positive reviews from fans of the annimated film, the original Victor Hugo novel and Disney stage plays alike. Even fans of crictized the gargoyles in the annimated film, praised the way they were handled and appreciated how their humor was "less slapsticky" and they made them firmly in Quasimodo's imagination, while also praising the performances given by Bryan Cranston, Jason Alexander and Jon Stewart. Christy Carlson Romano as Esmeralda, Terence Stamp as The Archdeacon and Alan Rickman as Judge Frollo have become fan favorites.

Controversary[]

Despite the film's praise from fans and critics, Parents complained that it was too dark for Disney and critcized the song Hellfire, and believed Esmeralda was a bad role model for little girls, given that she killed Judge Frollo and how heroes shouldn't kill.
