Chun-Li (春麗 or チュンリー Shunrei or Chunrī?, Simplified Chinese: 春丽) is a video game character from the Street Fighter series, originally debuting in Street Fighter II. The first playable female fighter in the series, she would be making her playable debut in the Super Smash Bros. franchise (Great Fray Smash Bros. in Japan) as a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Great Fray Smash Bros. Special in Japan) DLC Fighter.

Moveset

Her moveset is an amalgation of her various appearances. Most of the moveset references are taken from these: [1], [2] and [3]

Unlike her fellow Street Fighter characters, Chun-Li's attacks are based around Chinese martial arts, which gives her much more kick-based attacks rather than punches. Additionally, Chun-Li can wall jump, as she can in Street Fighter. However, she still follows the same basic "theme" that her predecessors have set in place for her, where her attacks change depending on whether the button is held or tapped, as well as certain moves changing depending on how far away she is from her opponent.

Gimmicks/Mechanics

Like her fellow Street Fighters (Ryu and Ken), Chun-Li shares some gimmicks/traits alongside them:

  • Chun-Li will always face her opponent during a one-on-one match.
  • A small flash will appear whenever Chun-Li does the input command version of one of her Special *Moves instead of the standard B input.

Sound effects from the Street Fighter II series are used when Chun-Li hits opponents, albeit heavily modified, instead of the typical knockback sounds. The intensity of the sound depends on the power of the move.

She also carries a unique, new trait with her, where certain aerial attacks change depending on whether or not she is jumping in an arc (referred to in the moveset as "diagonal").

Basic Moves

  • Neutral Combo:
    • Tapped: Hyakuretsukyaku - Chun-Li performs a backhand, followed by a chop and then finishes with a lunging punch. When continuously mashed, Chun-Li will unleash a flurry of kicks. The attack will continue for a short while if the button is continuously mashed afterwards.
    • Held - Chun-Li performs a spinning hook kick. Based on her standing heavy kick in Street Fighter II.
  • Side Tilt:
    • Tapped (close) - Chun-Li elbows forward.
    • Tapped (far) - Chun-Li kicks forward. Based on her standing light kick from Street Fighter II.
    • Held - Chun-Li punches forward. Based on her standing heavy punch from Street Fighter III.
  • Up Tilt:
    • Tapped - Chun-Li thrusts her foot upwards.
    • Held: Kakushu Raku Kyaku - Chun-Li will bring her foot down and kick forward, hitting two more times.
  • Down Tilt:
    • Tapped - Chun-Li performs a crouching shin kick. Based on her crouching light kick from Street Fighter II.
    • Held - Chun-Li performs a crouching forward punch. Based on her crouching heavy punch from Street Fighter II.
  • Dash Attack: Senjou Shu - Chun-Li slides across the floor on one foot while kicking with the other. Based on one of her moves in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

Smash Moves

  • Side Smash: Sou Hakkei - Chun-Li thrusts both of her hands forward, forcefully pushing the opponent.
  • Up Smash - Chun-Li powerfully thrusts her foot upwards. Based on her close heavy kick from Street Fighter Alpha 3.
  • Down Smash: Sen'enshu - Flips into a head stand while spinning her legs like helicopter blades, then slams her legs down in front of her. Based on the move of the same name from Street Fighter Alpha.

Aerial Moves

  • Neutral Air:
    • Regular - Chun-Li chops downwards while in the air. Based on her jumping punches from Street Fighter II.
    • Diagonal - Chun-Li punches downwards. Based on her diagonal jumping punches from Street Fighter II.
  • Forward Air:
    • Regular - Chun-Li kicks upwards. Based on her jumping light and medium kicks from Street Fighter II.
    • Diagonal: Performs a sex kick, which has a sweet-spot on it. Based on her diagonal jumping light and medium kicks from Street Fighter II.
  • Back Air:
    • Regular: Chun-Li performs a split kick. Based on her jumping heavy kick in Street Fighter III.
    • Diagonal: Chun-Li flips and performs a reverse stretch kick. Based on her diagonal jumping heavy kick from Street Fighter III.
  • Up Air - Chun-Li performs a flip kick. Based on her jumping heavy kick in Street Fighter II.
  • Down Air: Yosokyaku - Chun-Li stomps her leg downwards. If she lands on the opponent, both she and the opponent will bounce, and she can lead into the attack once more. However, she can only use the move up to three times while in the air; touching the ground will fully reset the number of uses.

Grab/Throw Moves

  • Grab - Chun-Li grabs the opponent with both hands.
  • Pummel - Chun-Li knees the opponent. Based on her close light kick from Street Fighter II.
  • Forward Throw - Chun-Li thrusts the opponent into the ground. Based on her front throw in Street Fighter II.
  • Back Throw - Chun-Li turns around and thrusts the opponent into the ground. Based on her back throw in Street Fighter II.
  • Up Throw - Chun-Li kicks the opponent downwards, before kicking them upwards into the air.
  • Down Throw - Chun-Li pins the opponent onto the ground and performs a knifehand strike.

Special Moves

  • Neutral Special: Kikoken - Chun-Li fires off a small projectile that only reaches half the distance of Final Destination. Using the original input (holding back and then forward) increases the size and damage.
  • Side Special: Spinning Bird Kick - Chun-Li flips upside down and delivers a quintuple-hitting helicopter kick. Using the original input (holding down and then up) increases the damage, though, uniquely, the input only works with the B button (once done correctly).
  • Up Special: Tenshokyaku - Chun-Li performs a spinning kick upwards. Using the original input (holding down and then up) increases the distance, damage, and number of hits (going from three to five), though, uniquely, the input only works with the A button.
  • Down Special: Hazanshu - Chun-Li flips forward, slamming one of her legs into the ground. If used in the air, she will fall to the ground. Using the original input (half-circle backwards) increases the damage towards to the opponent.
  • Final Smashes:
    • Kikosho - If Chun-Li is not right next to an opponent, she will create a large ball of energy that hits multiple times to him/her/them with lots of damage (and just like in it's appearances prior to Marvel vs. Capcom 3, it is shielded). Afterwards, the opponents get knocked out.
    • Hoyokusen - If Chun-Li is right next to an opponent, she will trap them in a flurry of kicks (two sets of seven kicks), finishing off with a powerful kick.
    • Shichisei Senku Kyaku - If Chun-Li is in the air, regardless of whether or not she is next to an opponent, she will dash forward, kicking. If she hits an opponent, the screen will focus on her, before showing the kanji for the attack on screen (as Chun-Li calls it out) and the screen flashes, before returning to normal after doing so.

Entrance/On-Screen Appearance

Chun-Li walks onto the stage from a mist in the background, then gets into a fighting stance while saying "You ready for this?"

Taunts

  • Up: Chun-Li leans forward and says "Sorry!". Has a hitbox dealing 2% and is noticeably quick.
  • Side: Chun-Li leans forward and says "Your timing needs some work."
  • Down: Chun-Li crosses her arms and shouts "Come on! Get real."

Idle Animations

  • Chun-Li simply yawns, much like her taunt in Street Fighter III.
  • Chun-Li stretches up, much like one of her taunts in Street Fighter IV.

Victory Poses

  1. Chun-Li jumps for joy three times in the air, then gives a cute peace-sign gesture. While doing this she says, "You hesitated for a moment, didn’t you?"
  2. Chun-Li kicks multiple times, before placing her fist in her palm and bowing, saying "I'm the strongest woman in the world."
  3. Chun-Li punches, crouches, performs a sweeping kick, then flips, moving her hands and finally posing. She says, "My kicks were taught to me by my father. Don't take them lightly!"

Losing Pose

Chun-Li humbly claps for the winner.

Victory Theme

A remix of the victory theme from Street Fighter II, shared with Ryu and Ken.

Stages

Each Stage features lots of music that had the Street Fighter series appearing, whenever it can be from the mainline titles, the spin-offs (such as Final Fight and Saturday Night Slam Masters) or it's crossover appearances.

Crowded Downtown

This stage is a downtown market in Beijing that is similar to her stage from Street Fighter II and among the crowd is a bicycle-riding spectator and several chefs with food stands. The cyclist can be knocked off his bicycle if someone is knocked down near him during the fight, but he will get back up without injury and continue moving.

Festival at the Old Temple

Taking place nearby Sangdang-gu, South Korea and originating from Street Fighter IV (particularly with Super Street Fighter IV), the stage is where much of the Battles take place. The left side has a street that is blocked off by the spectators, while the right side has market stalls. The large vases in the middle of the stage can be broken.

Bustling Side Street

A stage originating from Street Fighter V in which is released for the PlayStation 4 and Computers via Steam, takes place in the middle of a Chinese city on a busy street sidewalk outside of a restaurant.

It was the first stage used when the game was originally revealed. It is also the first to use special knockout zones.

The left and right edges of the stage can cause special cinematic knockouts, if the final blow is landed at the corners. On the right side, the opponent can be thrown into a double-decker bus, which drives off with them inside during the victory sequence. On the left side, they can be thrown through the door into the restaurant.

If the left side zone is triggered on a non-deciding round, the match continues within the restaurant. If the next knockout happens on the left corner when inside the restaurant, the victim is thrown into the kitchen and a bowl of noodles lands on their head. Should another round begin afterwards, the opponent starts the round with the bowl on their head, which can be knocked off during the fight.

City of Chaos

Originating from the aforementioned Street Fighter V, the stage is set in New York, during the aftermath of one of the Black Moons' electromagnetic pulses, which cut off electricity to the city. Alex is in the background (when he is not selected by the player), fixing his car and observing the fight.

The left and right edges of the stage can cause special cinematic knockouts if the final blow is landed at the corners. On the left side, the character crashes through the "Hot Dog" sign and slams back-first into the railing, sending the hot dog piece up in the air. It then finally lands on their head. Should another round begin afterwards, the character will start the round with the hot dog piece on their head, which can be knocked off during the fight.

If the right side zone is triggered on a non-deciding round, the character crashes through the glass doors and into the bank, where the match will continue. If the next knockout happens on the right corner when inside the bank, the character gets tossed into the vault, where it closes and locks them inside.

Volcanic Rim

Originating from Street Fighter IV, the battles are set near an erupting volcano. Lava shoots up from the ground every time a Fighter performs a powerful move and if anyone gets knocked out, the volcano erupted with a loud boom.

Ring of Destiny

Also originating from Street Fighter V, the stage is in an illuminated stadium with giant statues and thousands of People cheering for the Fighters. In the center is a boxing ring with the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate/Great Fray Smash Bros. Special logo on the center. Outside the ring, various people (whether they are Humans or not) can be seen cheering for the Fighters.

Similar to her fellow Playable Street Fighter representatives, her Classic Mode involves her against opponents representing the franchise of her origin.
