Cartoon Network Films is an American film studio owned by Comcast through Universal Pictures, a division of its wholly owned subsidiary NBCUniversal and Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, which is itself a subsidiary of the Japanese multinational conglomerate, Sony. It was led by Brian A. Miller and Kristine Belson and was headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was originally founded on July 11, 2025 as a joint venture between Cartoon Network and Sony Pictures Entertainment. In 2028, Sony agreed to sell a 51% stake in the company to NBCUniversal (via its Universal Pictures unit); the sale was completed on December 20, 2028.

History

In 2025, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Cartoon Network set up a joint venture film studio known as Cartoon Network Films, a Vancouver-based film company where Kristine Belson, the president of Sony Pictures Animation, would produce films for Columbia Pictures.

The company had previously been reported to have Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, a Dexter's Laboratory theatrical film, an Ed, Edd n Eddy theatrical film, a CGI-animated Samurai Jack remake, OK K.O.!, Flapjack, a spin-off film of The Rowdyruff Boys, Ben 10, a CGI-animated film of The Boondocks, the third Powerpuff Girls movie, Over The Garden Wall, a film by Michael Dougherty titled Calling All Robots, a Camp Lazlo theatrical film, a Powerpuff Girls reboot film titled PPGmac, and a 2D hand-drawn animated film based on Burroughs' novel A Princess of Mars titled John Carter: Warlord of Mars in development.

On August 13, 2027, Cartoon Network Films released their first film, The Powerpuff Girls Movie Part II, a sequel to The Powerpuff Girls Movie and based on the TV series by Craig McCracken. It became a critical and financial success, earning $120.2 million in the domestic box office and $252.6 million worldwide, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

On March 3, 2028, the studio then released another film, Puffy, a film based on the TV series Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi by Sam Register. This film met positive reviews, and grossed $185.7 million worldwide.

On July 7, 2028, the studio released Dexter, a film based on the TV series Dexter's Laboratory by Genndy Tartakovsky. It became a critical and financial success, earning $78.2 million domestically and $152.8 million worldwide.

On August 2, 2028, Comcast officially announced that its NBCUniversal division intended on acquiring a 51% stake in Cartoon Network Films for at least $1.8 billion, with Universal Pictures gaining exclusive worldwide distribution rights to its library. The deal was officially closed on December 20, 2028; Brian A. Miller, the senior vice president and general manager of Cartoon Network Studios, would produce films for Universal Pictures.
